WOW! Thanks for all the help. I hadn't forgotten this post. Had 2 migraines and to top it off, the hubby's sugar(just found out he's diabetic in Mar.) keeps spiking for no reason...so been having to deal with that.

@That Wrascally Wabbit: Thanks for the offer. I may take you up on that when things settle around here.

@2-SHEDS: It wasn't text. I have just enough program knowledge to get myself in trouble. My programming technique is usually trial and error...mostly errors.

@Goody: I have Aptedit Pro. Since I was using my trial and error method....."Error! Error! That does not compute."

@GMMan, A+ Certified Tech (and Game Hacker): First of all, Congrats! And then, Thank You.I kept telling him the game was probably too old to do that. But he kept insisting to ask "my buddies" on GOTD. If it could be done, they would find away to guide me through it. I really didn't expect you to actually try to do it.. Thank you once again.

I really appreciate all the suggestions and help. Thanks.... all of you.

I've downloaded all four Magic Ball games and did a quick analysis. Here are the results:
Magic Ball 1's .dat files are standard ZIP files. They contain non-structured (plain mapping) level data.
Magic Ball 2's .pak files are encrypted, using one of the available ciphers from MCrypt. Decrypting is difficult because game EXE is obfuscated.
Magic Ball 3's .dat files are also obfuscated, using unknown encryption (potentially a function stripped from MCrypt). Similar to above, EXE is obfuscated.
Magic Ball 4's .dat files are standard ZIP files. However, the level data are in a different format than of the ones used in Magic Ball 1. Those data files are clearly marked as using the MB4 level format.

Verdict: Because all the level formats are different (the encrypted ones are presumed different), it'll take a lot of work to get them all to work with MB1. Also, because of different advances between the games, you'll have lots of trouble converting everything to work with any specific Magic Ball game.

There are way too many file formats using the .dat extension. Really, a .dat could be anything. It usually indicates a arbitrary binary file, but there are no rules what could be in a .dat file.

I can probably check it out for you if you give me some links to the different packages and maybe a key (if I can't bypass the DRM). I did it with Hyperballoid, so I probably can do it with Magic Ball, if it's not too heavily comfuscated (is that a word?). However, you'll have to wait till after Friday, after I've taken my CompTIA A+ exams (wish me luck).

(I hate IE. There's no spellchecking.)

Not an easy answer really. .dat files are different than regular file extensions. There's really no ONE program that can open or edit them. They can be text (ascii) or hexidecimal files. It's usually a trial and error thing with me but sometimes you can open them with "Microsoft Access" or "Open Office Base". If that doesn't work, try "Notepad" that comes with Windows or use NotePad++ like I do. This will work if the .dat is just text but then again it may have errors with symbols not recognized. If you have programming knowledge, you can use a hex editor if it's hexidecimal (but that doesn't fall into the "easy" part you asked for).

You can try opening the file by right clicking on the file and select "Open with", and then the file that created it (however; you can't always edit the file this way). Also many programs do a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) on the .dat before it loads, and an edited .dat file may not load for ya at all depending on the program that runs it. Like I said, not an easy answer for ya and it's usually a trial and error thing.

Good Luck to ya.

Hi Delenn, I have a game called X-Ray Ball that I purchased from alawar many years ago.
It was released around the same time as the first Magic Ball and is very similar. The blocks look the same and the levels are similar; though it has three different modes of play. I played it out many years ago and will probably never play it again, so you can have it if you wish.

PM me or email me and I'll sort it out for you. :)

See this is what I mean...I left info out...DUH!

What I need it for: The hubby constantly plays the game "Magic Ball". He has ALL the different ones but he only plays the first one. He is bored with it now and he really doesn't like the other games but he would like to take some of the levels from the other games and add it to the first one. Is there a way to do that in the .dat files?

Thanks!

Sorry I haven't been on much. Between the bouts with my migraines and it being summer...taking advantage of the heat, I just haven't been on much.

I need a program that will edit .dat files and right now, I just can't think straight. I, probably, have one ON my PC that I got from GOTD or it's right in front of my face but for the life of me, I just don't know.

So please....hit me with some links or names of programs I should have.

I don't think Alawar are actually the developers of Action Ball (I may be wrong) only the distributors, but I see what you are saying. I'm actually looking forwards to it's release as I've enjoyed playing the deluxe version plus the expansion pack which I bought about this time last year and which added new robots and power ups to the game, which is far from what the hyperballoid team did with their game.

I loved Hyperballoud when I first discovered it and eagerly bought the expansion packs as they were released. So I feel the same as you with respect to what they have done regarding the Hyperballoid Golden Pack.

However as I stopped buying level sets after the Merry Christmas set was released, mainly because I was a little disappointed at spending so much on the game with no new power ups or other upgrades added apart from the music pack, (which you still had to buy). I decided to buy the Golden pack as there were enough packs to compensate for the price.

I think we will have to wait and see with respect to Action Ball 2. I do think with the 2 added on it will be a totally different game. Usually when a game is just a re-hash you get the Deluxe added. I didn't buy the original Action Ball, so was delighted to buy Action Ball deluxe and get two games in one.

Sorry if I wasn't much use on this one.

I received a newsletter from Alawar saying they were releasing a "NEW" game in December, "Action Ball 2". I was a little burned about the "Hyperballoid Complete Edition" vs. "Hyperballoid Gold" sneaky creation and release, specially after I paid lots of $$ for expansion packs now included in the "Gold" release. I see on the Alawar site they are now selling Action Ball Delux, for which they offered expansion pack for sale, for 1/2 price. It makes me wonder if Action Ball 2 might be another Hyperballoid Gold type release. Anyone have any info....Steven, aka Whiterabbit...you have any inside info? Thanks all.

Thanks for that information. When I eventually get the game, I'll check that out. I didn't realise you could sit back and plan your moves. that makes the game even better. I hope they do do a rerun. :)

Thank you for sharing your enthusiasm for games with us. I enjoy reading your comments, even when they are long. I often pick up some interesting info, and have gotten several good games from reading them.

It seems you may be making the same mistake I made when I first tried it. I thought I had to rush...rush...rush to keep the monsters from filling up the screen. Only later did I realize that there is no time limit to it! You can sit back, and take all the time you wish. The monsters will wave while they're waiting on you, and the one's behind the doors will blink their eyes. They only move immediately after you do. This is what I like about this game. You can actually take some time to think ahead and plan your moves. It gradually gets harder and harder as more monsters show up each time after each level. At least, I think that's how it works. It would have been more fun if Alawar had added new bonuses like you say they intended to do.

I wasn't able to access the game giveaway page on the 18/19th November for some reason as I believe many others weren't either. I'm posting this because I do think it will be part of a re-run at some time in the future so I’ll be able to make a short post in the comments section for a change, lol. I may just keep doing this because I do think it’s about time I started using the forums. (then again I’ve said that before).

Anyway, heres the review I wrote yesterday:

This is now available for half price from Alawar (less than $10. The fact that there are only two comments about the actual game in the review section, going back to 2003, may speak volumes about the game. Despite that obvious negative poke at this game; the kids will probably love the game. We as a family didn’t particularly find the game entertaining enough the first time around, but then I was inundated by loads of games at the time (not via the game giveaway, but from going on a spending spree) so didn’t keep this one because we weren’t inspired at the time. However if and when the game is re-run please try the game before you decide not to bother, as I did spend more time playing it today and feel I was a little hasty the first time around.

The aim of the game is to place monsters of a particular color into groups of four or more. This can be done in lines of four, a square of four, an L shape and a T shape. There are a couple of bonus items such as bombs that can clear away unwanted monsters, and a joker that allows you to create a group of four from any color group of three which can then escape to the ‘Monsters House’ Alawar does say in the help menu that they were intending to add more bonus items/power ups into this game, but that was over four years ago and nothing has materialized.

Personally I find this sort of statement in a game that is being sold a little false; I’ve come across it before when developers promise something extra, for example; extra board sets for free in their advertisements, which never appear; {a quirky arkanoid called Arcon Toys springs to mind, see the end of the review for more details about that game and others}*

To move a monster to the appropriate place you must first click on the monster then the place you wish it to move to. You do have to ensure there is a clear path to the empty cell though. Once you have created a group of four as detailed above, the monsters are freed. You earn points for every monster that escapes to the Monsters house. The level ends when you attain a specific number of points. There is an indicator in the form of a water pipe to the left of the screen that tells you how near you are to the target score. You will finish the level when the water pipe is empty.

Empty cells slowly fill with monsters. You can see which cells will fill because you can see the monsters eyes, peeping through the letter box. You can also see the color of the monster; however until the monster actually opens the door you can place any color of monster in the house. You can create multiple points bonus’s by creating multiple shapes. See the help menu for a graphical explanation of this.

The game does speed up a as you progress through the levels and contrary to my original thoughts about this game; it isn’t such a bad game as I originally remembered it. Apart from the influx of games I was buying as mentioned above, it could also have been possible that the game giveaways at the time contained a lot of match three or more games, which always dampens my interest after a few of the same. I certainly continued playing it for a while today though, although because the game giveaway site wasn’t available for whatever reason, I downloaded the demo from Alawar and worked from that while writing this review. Unfortunately, when I paused the game, the time continued to tick away , so I didn’t get to progress very far (I didn’t actually realize that this was happening until I closed the game for a break and discovered I had only a few minutes left, despite only playing what seemed like several minutes. I discovered what today’s game was going to be by looking at the giveaway site, which thankfully was up and running.

At the beginning of each level you are shown a window called a help mate that tells you how many points you require to pass the level, the shape you have to make. Besides the main shape or figure as they are called, you are shown special shapes or patterns that are combinations of at least two different colors. In the early levels you were only allowed to make the one shape shown in the help mate plus the special pattern; it also showed you what colors of monsters would appear and what bonuses you could expect There were none in the first couple of levels. You didn’t really need them though because they were easy levels. :) or :( ,depending upon how hard you like your games to be, lol.

There is no save function in this game. If you decide to close the game down your score will be posted on the high score board (if you made enough points) and when you return you have to start from level one again. I only managed to play up to level five (after initially playing level one and shutting it down to find that returning didn’t take me to level 2), which had introduced the joker bonus point and a couple of the shapes I could utilize to empty houses.

Check out the screen captures by following the links below:

All on one page:

http://s109.photobucket.com/albums/n61/Whiterabbit_01/gaotd/Monster%20House/?start=all

As a slideshow:

http://s109.photobucket.com/albums/n61/Whiterabbit_01/gaotd/Monster%20House/?action=view&slideshow=true

The game speeds up very fast. Unfortunately, I ran out of time to check any further, so was unable to discover whether later levels allowed you to collect more than one shape at a time during a level. I actually quite enjoyed playing this game and would give it 6.5 put of 10. Although I realize the developers purposely made this particular game this game without a save function, I think it would still have been a positive aspect to the game if you had at least been given the option. This could have been accomplished by having an endless and an arcade mode, however I think having several game modes is a recent development. It’s certainly challenging the way it has been designed and gives you the opportunity to beat your own scores rather than just save the game for later and continue; which is still a great idea, but not always as exciting. There are no limits to the number of levels; that is, it is an endless game. Of course you need to be on your toes if you are to keep up with the speed of the game. At level five the 9x9 grid of houses seemed to fill with monsters very quickly, lol. So good luck to those who manage to reach levels in excess of a 100 (if that’s possible) Considering the nature of this game, I think it could be improved by adding an online high scores link as this would inspire some gamers to play for much longer and add a more competitive feel to the game. Also a two player game; I seem to remember most games had options for two or more players to play a level one after the other years ago. I know there are two player games still around, but not in the way they used to be presented? Alawar mentions that the games development was inspired by Monster Inc. the film by Disney.

To Alawar Games; thank you for allowing this game to be repeated and to the Game Giveaway team for providing this fantastic project.

=============================================================

*
I don’t regret buying that one (which cost me $15) and would recommend any arkanoid fan check it out. It’s reminiscent of the arkanoid Wave Ball Root Revision, with it’s weird moving board sets, and if you pick up a particular power up your perspective changes to the balls view, which is really weird.….it certainly adds a new dimension to the game and adds a difficulty that has meant despite having both game for quite a few years I’ve still not finished either despite the small number of levels Arcon Toys has. I can’t remember how many levels Wave Ball has though. Both are well worth checking out if you like arkanoid games. They are both very original and harder than your normal arkanoid game. Well Wave Ball certainly is, lol. Check out the demo’s from:

Arcon Toys:

http://www.5star-shareware.com/Windows/Games/Arkanoid/arcontoys.html

Wave Ball root Revision:

http://www.arkanoid.com/games/waveballrootrevision

ps
I originally bought this online about the same time I bought Arcon Toys, and shortly after bought one of those budget games packs from the local supermarket and found the same game was included with it. Both the 50 game pack and the single game cost me the same. As with previous offers, I’ll give away my copy I purchased online if you email me. It may take me several days to find the file and reg code as I’ve been doing a lot of updating over the past year and have so many DVD’s full of games and other programs that I’ve bought or downloaded as freeware or mod’s for games (e.g. I have hundreds of gigabytes of files for the Battlefield 2 game alone), that it will take time. But it’s yours for free as I can’t see the harm in passing one on when I’ve got two paid for copies. :)

Hi Musika and Merril. Bonnie here. I'll try to tell you how I fixed my Nuclear Ball today. It'll take me a while to get this right, so bear with me.

1. Last night I downloaded and installed the fix from
http://www.ursegames.com/games/nuclear-ball/nuclear-ball-setup.exe
into a new folder and did not overwrite the existing file.
2. I have no idea why I did this.
3. It started on the famous Level 29 and after killing the dreaded floating box, I played it as a "trial version" for the entire 60 minutes at which point it became unplayable.
4 :(
5. This morning, after some experimentation, I uninstalled the trial version.
6. My original game installed May 22 works like a charm and does not say Trial Version.
7. I have no idea why this worked.

I hope you are able to fix yours, Musika. It's a great game isn't it? I went to level 46 this morning and look forward to all 100 levels. I think it was awsome of the company to issue a fix to us. I'm going to send them an email now to thank them.

Thanks for the original link to the fix, Merril.

hmmm....
After I installed the new version I found out some level files are different, namely 6,21,29,36 and an extra 101.
(this means they did fix the problem I mentioned in level 36...)

I just finished the game. I don't know about level 36, all I can say I finished all 100 levels, although it seems I am the only one in this forum who succeeded in getting the game going again. If you didn't overwrite the GAOTD-game with the demo version, my instructions should work. I know they did for me.

It is possible they have since disabled the GOTD provided key. Perhaps they need to do another special build to fix this level also.

It this is something that hasn't really been tested - perhaps the full version should include a game that is fully playable.

If it is provided with 50 levels and only levels 1-15 are playable - I think it is only fair that the remaining levels should be accessible - otherwise the game really isn't a "full version". It is just half a game that doesn't expire.

I just got back to trying to straighten this game out. I clicked on the link above (in the post by rolliopogo). What I ended up with is a 60 min Demo version which, when I entered my code from the first day, states that it is "not correct. Try again." I didn't uninstall the game or anything, because it didn't say to anywhere. Any thoughts on how to straighten this out? Should I uninstall this and download from their site?

I used the download link BEFORE jtpjc posted the information on how to do it without having the registration key lost so I now only have a demo version.

Moderator - please see if URSE Games will allow this game to be posted again for one 24 hour download time on Game Giveaway. I really would like to get that program running again.

If there is some other way that I can find the old registration key on my computer to use with my new download please let me know.

The above tips didn't work for me. However, I got the GAOTD-version working again and now I am at level 30. I am still registered and there is no time limit. This is how to do it:

Download the demo version, as mentioned above.
Install it into a different directory than the original one.
Go into the new directory and copy the file \Media\Level\Arcade\29.dat.
Paste this file into the directory of the same name of your GAOTD-game. Obviously, you should overwrite the existing one.

Since the demo version overwrites the original copy of the GAOTD Nuclear Ball icon on your desktop, you should change the link to the original location of the game. Otherwise you will start the time limited demo.

Hope this helps.

First of all thanks to GAODD for the sofwares, I'm regular user of it.
After downloading and playing nuclear ball for some times I got stuck at level 29.One of the boxes will not drop and the game cannot continue.
Is this a glitch? anybody else had same problem?
