(How not to do a Backup)
"If these clients of Distribute.IT had no other backup other than what was at Distribute.IT, they would then have to rebuild their site - from scratch," he said.
"From the Distribute.IT blog post, it appears that they have lost all of the content for these web sites and any associated backups that Distribute.IT kept."
I think I'm in shock ... I have lost everything .... I couldnt possibly replicate all those years of work again ... my whole lifes work is gone down the drain," wrote one.
Customers hit the Whirlpool forums to complain that Distribute.IT had not adequately responded with information about the break-in and that the hack "has probably killed my business".

Just had to use it last night. Not sure if I was hacked, Vista'd, or had a trojan, but I had to reinstall from the back up to get it working right again. It only took about half an hour, much faster than a reinstall, so that scores bonus points. I am very happy that you gave me the heads up on this, Moxxey. Thanks again!

If you are quick, Moxxey posted a link (http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/6891) to get Paragon Back-up and Recovery 10 compact for free (until Jan 19). They also have a free version on their website, but I like to have the full version whenever possible. You can back-up to an additional/external HD or split it into a bunch of DVDs. It also can compress the back-up, but it sounds like you will still need additional storage. Just remember to check the MBR box when making your back-up. Also, with this program you can create your bootable CD. It uses WinPE and is pretty easy to work with. I hope this helps.

Ok I have 200 gig C: drive, it has 1 partition D: for restore function which is 8 gb.
the rest is C: with 178 total space . I have used 168 Gb of that space.
now I want to back up the c drive , mainly the system files or windows, and the apps I have installed.
so what is the best free software to make a image file to external HD.?
or what is the best way to back up my main drive?
I would need to compress it? or would I need 168 gb of hd space on ext drive to bck this up?
I want to back it up and then add another partition to it, so that windows will be on 1st partition, tehn rest for storage, and still keep the d drive for restore as is 8 gb or maybe change that to 10 gb.
also what would be a good amount for the windows partition 1?
I have recently got the partition software, but need to back up before I attempt to add a partition.
also I have no back up now except for the restore on D drive, so I would like to have a backup, and am also curious how would you use a backup if say windows did crash where it wouldnt come on or boot at all? I dont have a windows disk ,I use XP professional ed and I have tried to make rescue disks [thru windows] , but always get a error at end of process.
so I need some type of rescue disk for my system too.
never had any problems for 5 years, but would like to be ready if something did happen to system.
If I could do the back up, and then have smaller c drive with just windows on it I could then make a smaller image of just that for bkup which is sort of the goal.
so any advice is welcome.

Like Games, Music Converting, Photo Programs (counted 52 in Photo folder!) Spyware folder, Converting & Burning CD's, Unused Desktop, etc. etc. Easier to find if they're sorted by category.

I got Paragon Drive backup v.8.0 "special edition" on 5/10/08, as well as Paragon Drive copy, and Hard Disk Manager on 5/13. And then I went and bought Drive Copy 8.5 just recently. Now to find time to do all the back up and copy!! Am just waiting to get my new machine (here Tuesday), so I can use this!
Wonder if the v9.0 would conflict with the previous ones, or do I have to uninstall them first?

@ BillW50

I have seen Windows lose recent parts of the registry before...I never figured out what causes it.

Yes... so you keep saying.

If that theory was correct - I should be able to reinstall - and enter the code again.

Entering the code during install = no internet connectivity required. Titan says code=100% OK.

Restart Titan= "Requires to Activate Code" - Wants to connect to Titan Servers over the Internet - Tried to Validate Code - Error Message - "That code has been cancelled due to overuse" (or similar).

Nothing to do with the registry - everything to do with the code being canceled server side by Titan developers the minute the giveaway was over.

Still I'm not complaining... I'm over it now.

I have seen Windows lose recent parts of the registry before. And you would never know it except it takes out recent activations too. I never figured out what causes it. But I suppose a Windows Update might be it or at least one of them.

Titan did things slightly different.

1. GOTD - Activate - get the xxxx-xxx-xx-xxxx type code
2. Install Titan.
3. Run Titan and enter the code.
4. Titan displays a message saying "code accepted - thank you - blah blah blah"
5. Look at clock - OMG is that the time? I'm off to bed.
6. Next day - Windows update - you need to reboot your computer.
7. Reboot.
8. Run Titan Backup.
9. Message - "Whoa hang on buddy - gotta validate that code with the Titan Servers"
10. Message - "Sorry, we have shut down that code. You are outta luck, mate".

That's it in a nutshell.

Moral - Ignore the message saying "Thanks for the code. It's Legit. You are good to go". Do a reboot and restart, just in case they decide to slip in a second "code check".

I didn't uninstall the older version before installing the last one and it is still working.

I installed the new one on the same directory as the old one and I re-registered it using the new license number provided and the same registration name I used in the first installation.

I haven't had any problems. In fact I just did a simple backup test to make sure it was working so I don't know why yours are not working. Did you not re-register it?

Mine still works. Although I deleted the older one before I installed the more recent version. I have found throughout the past year with some GAOTD software offerings, this practice seems to work out the best. If I really want to keep the old one, I'll rename the old program folder and then install the more recent version in a new folder.

LOL. That is 100% Exactly what happened to me - right down to the Windows Update.

(I had only setup the program, to be able to help other people if they had any issues with the install - nobody did so I didn't need to go any further. I only discovered the 2nd activation (with the developer) when I began to investigate removing the program - and the icon in the system tray).

I'll see what I can do.

I downloaded Titan Backup a few months ago when it was offered. When I saw it again a couple days ago, I assumed it was an update. I downloaded it ago and installed it. Doing so changed the serial.

Today, I rebooted my computer due to a windows update. Upon restarting, Titan Backup attempted to activate the new serial but I received a message stating the new serial was blocked due to "excessive usage".

Titan backup no longer works.

For anyone else who redownloaded this, be aware the program will stop working when you reboot your system.

Now what...

Just so you don't waste too much time trying to get the key, that key was only valid while the giveaway was running.

The giveaway key can no longer be used to install the product.
