I do the same with most of my registered software - but some people go into meltdown when they receive emails from a software company - blaming the sender rather than just using the options provided to stop the emails.

I've found it far simpler to create a folder in my Inbox and then create a message rule to direct emails from Ashampoo and others to that folder. I can then review the emails, or not, and they won't clutter the Inbox.

While some users complain about software that installs "extras" - usually the reason they find themselves in the situation was because they failed to remove the options during install. It goes without saying, that when installing new software on your PC, it is important that you don't rush, and pay attention to each screen and option that you include during the install.

Ashampoo is one company that offers to install a toolbar and make changes to the users web browser. While some users may actually find the toolbar useful - many more would rather keep their PCs config as light as possible.

During setup - there is a check box to turn off the Toolbar and to not change browser settings. That is it. A check box. Read the screens when running setup and clear that checkbox. Not a drama - just one click. Yes it can be inconvenient, and may require some practice.

Uncheck the toolbar checkbox (2nd highlighted from the top) the other 2 boxes should uncheck automatically.

Once you get the software running - Ashampoo programs usually have a "service channel" feature that not only checks for updates, but also lets you know about other offers or software that is available.

Some users also don't like this feature. To turn it off - find the "Service Channel" screen - could be straight off the main menu, or buried in the "Options" or "Settings" menu.

In terms of emails (spam). When you register (even for a free giveaway license) - Ashampoo stores ALL of your License keys in a free account (login using your email address and password - check your registration email).

* HOW TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM ASHAMPOO EMAILS

Visit http://ashampoo.com/ and you will see a top menu with "Products/Shop, Downloads, MyAshampoo, Support and Company".

Click on "MyAshampoo" - and login (MyAshampoo Login)

Click on Settings

There you will see some more checkboxes where you can subscribe or unsubscribe from any emails from Ashampoo.

Finally all of the emails that Ashampoo send out have an unsubscribe link - if you are receiving the emails and don't want to get them any more - click on the link included at the end of the email.

It is much better (for everyone concerned) if you unsubscribe rather than the "solution" I have heard some users do, when they allow Ashampoo to continue to send the emails, but the user sets up rules in their email client to block the emails (which is just dumb).

My own opinion though - I stop the emails - and occasionally login to the Ashampoo site - visit MyAshampoo page and check out the "Service Letters" to read about the current offers every few weeks there really are some great offers now and then. I'd never pay $50 or full price - if I can wait until a promotion comes along, and collect the same program for about $10 it is worth waiting.

Perhaps with all these options (even though it only takes 2 minutes to turn them off), I'm sure some users when providing their email address for the first time would appreciate an easier option - a single "do not contact me" checkbox. As the saying goes, "Less is More". If the software is good, the user knows how to find Ashampoo and will return when they are ready to upgrade or purchase other programs - but users who feel pestered or hassled, will stay away, and "warn" their friends to do the same.

It's generally not recommended to install many antivirus on a windows machine, since they often appear to grow roots and thus become very hard to remove cleanly. Ashampoo also has a reputation of requiring email registration and bombarding the account with spam. With that said, Norton had improved a lot over the last year. If you would like to use a more permanent freeware solution, Comodo and PC Tools both have all-in-one security suites.

I use Norton Security Suite (free for Comcast internet customers). It is Norton 360 without the 2 gb of storage online. It is a good program. Though when I couldn't pay my bill for over a month Norton worked for about a couple weeks. Then Norton disabled itself till I got Comcast back.

RE: License:
Well, there seems to be a lack of clarity?

I'll 2nd that, with the opinion that the whole thing seemed a bit poorly thought out -- I don't know if they started with 180 days & the GOTD team intervened on our behalf, &/or if someone doing the code for the updates simply muddled through to come up with something so they could go home. That you apparently need to update before activating or updates won't work is pretty poor in my book, but oh well...

My own 2 cents, FWIW of course...

1st question is what are you willing to put up with LeetZero? There are several free solutions, but for example you might only be able to update once a day or something, or with Microsoft's Security Essentials you do without a Firewall or several other features that were included in their pay product (before they pulled it off the market). Other AV packages might ask you to put up with a pretty heavy load on your PC/laptop, some are not intuitive at all, especially if you set the firewall Not to let everything pass. Some are prone to false positives, though their fans often seem to think that's evidence that they work. :-) Comparisons on this site might be helpful: http://www.av-test.org/en/tests/test-reports/ , & there's always shadowserver.org, with lots of real-time stats on what's stopping what malware how well.

Normally I'd include a caution on how difficult it can be to remove all traces of an AV installation -- it can go beyond just files & registry entries, e.g. CA once set the HKCR section of Windows' registry to protected!... I could add new apps/entries, but any update/upgrade would fail till I figured out what happened. But the Ashampoo app sits on top of Windows more-or-less, without all the effects you'll get with most AV software.

At any rate, I'll sum it up saying that if there's something better rated that you'll actually use, rather than set minimal security so you don't have to bother, get it -- I've seen most all of the big names [including Norton] on sale for as low as $0 after MIR. There are probably some comparisons out there, but I've never seen Emsi or Ashampoo AM rated alongside the competition -- I would think if they performed respectably they'd be handing copies out to every AV testing site possible.

Allow me to quibble a bit with your wording "is Ashampoo worth to install today over Norton?"

I have no comment on Ashampoo but if you decide to move away from Norton then run the program's uninstall routine, then run the Norton Removal Tool, then run the Ashampoo install routine. You should never install another product "over" a Norton product as Norton products have a well-deserved reputation for not uninstalling cleanly, which causes serious performance problems for your system. While the other products will theoretically uninstall Norton during their installation it's an extremely bad idea to allow them to do so.

Just read BuBBy's comment # 6

@5 – John R . Ashampoo AntiMalware includes 180 days (6 months) signature updates.

edit: (after installing the giveaway) It seems the signature updates are a little more generous than 6 months.

Free Signature Updates are available until 24-Feb-2018 (2381 days).
Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (
+16
)

Well, there seems to be a lack of clarity?

I didn't install this programme, don't want to mess up my installed Kaspersky suite, so I have no experience with this giveaway.
Maybe there will be a comment by the developer or GOTD ref. the license.

Ashampoo have been around for a long time and generally have a good standing. Some say their products aren't as good as they used to be, but that's just opinion. I'd go check the comparison sites to see where they stand, but if push comes to shove with only 30 days left on your Norton trial it would seem prudent to install the software offered today. It's a full years licence so you don't need to go chapping and changing every few months. Not all of those free demos are going to be good. At least with Ashampoo you're getting an established name. Go for it (IMO) - you can always delete it later if you're not happy then return to your round of demo's

Hello.

Right yesterday Norton reached 30 days of trial, having only 60 days left (60-day trial from a CD that came with my computer).

What's your opinion? Should I wait another 30 days and get another trial of an antivirus or get Ashampoo Internet Security since today's a giveaway of it? I am not really sure how much I'd trust Ashampoo, never really heard of them as an antivirus.

I'd like to see your suggestions, is Ashampoo worth to install today over Norton?

Hi folks I have just received the following message from Ashampoo.

Dear Ashampoo customer,

We are writing to you concerning an important issue. We regret to tell you that we also detected an unauthorized access to one of our server systems. We assume that the attackers were able to purloin data of customers. Sensitive data such as billing information etc. is not affected by this, because Ashampoo does not store this data.

We summarized all pieces of information concerning this incident for you and would like you to read the following website: http://www.ashampoo.com/datatheft

I Love their burning program(1 of the easiest to use). But I NEVER buy their programs. They are always offering them free when a new version comes out. So all you need to do is be patient.

Revo Uninstaller (like many other uninstallers) is good for attempting to remove programs that were installed before getting the uninstaller. That is, it searches for keywords in the registry, file system, etc to find leftover items not deleted by the developer's uninstall process. It can miss a lot of things.

Ashampoo Uninstaller (etc) is similar to Windows' System Restore, except more thorough and detailed: That is, it takes a snapshot of all the files and registry just before installing a program. Then, it takes another snapshot after installation to see what changes were made. It shows you these changes in an Explorer-like window, and lets you see and choose what to remove (in case you don't want to put everything back like it was before the installation). Also, this information is stored so you can view it again at a later time if something unexpected happens later on down the road. You'll have a record of the original install to compare to.

Both methods can run into problems uninstalling because of Windows' security settings. Windows often won't allow some files or registry entries to be deleted, for example. At least with the Ashampoo Uninstaller, you have a record of such files or registry entries, and could find a way to remove them if you wanted to bad enough by temporarily changing some security settings.

Nowadays, I usually use Sandboxie when installing new software (when possible). That's because it sandboxes and records the changes made in real-time. Thus, you can check it out without worry of damage, see what was done and remove everything instantly by deleting the sandbox. If you want to keep it, you can just make another (permanent) install knowing ahead of time what to expect.

For those programs that won't install properly under Sandboxie, I run an older (free) version of Total Uninstall, which is similar to Ashampoo Uninstall. It works fine under XP. I don't know if it works under Vista, etc..

Cleans just files out of your registry. It says it works with it here http://www.ashampoo.com/en/usd/prq/1003/System_Utilities/Ashampoo-UnInstaller-4

Terri honestly I don't think you need it. There are plenty of freebies available. Besides you can get an earlier version for free.

http://store.pcauthority.com.au/p12953-ashampoo_winoptimizer_6

Take your pick I think all versions are the same. I just yahooed it. Their uninstaller utility I don't think you need that either. Though it is up to you.

Does anyone know if the Uninstaller works with Windows 7? Revo Uninstaller's free version doesn't. Also what exactly does the WinOptimizer 7 do and why do I need it?

Thanks.

I saw that the other day. I spend too much money on games to have money for that. No, I just took my computer back to factory settings a couple weeks ago and I was dying to get the new Ashampoo Winoptimizer 7, but I think I'll pass because this time I am just going to run the basic utilities and what they give me in Norton Security Suite by Comcast which is actually Norton 360.

But maybe I will actually listen to people this time. Some people don't recommend you run registry cleaners or anything like that. Norton 360 has a registry cleaner, but I don't think it does a deep scan as their Norton Utilities finds more problems. I would actually get it if you could use it on more than one computer and you can't. Norton Utilities you can, but any Ashampoo program you can't. My father and I tried once and I noticed Ashampoo Winoptimzer an earlier version was running on his computer but it wouldn't clean the computer because I had it installed. As soon as I took it off it cleaned his computer.

Just had to use it last night. Not sure if I was hacked, Vista'd, or had a trojan, but I had to reinstall from the back up to get it working right again. It only took about half an hour, much faster than a reinstall, so that scores bonus points. I am very happy that you gave me the heads up on this, Moxxey. Thanks again!
