First listed very briefly by Idunnobutiwastold a year ago Here, with just a fan art picture and game home page link! Great for the additional info, thanks gxgoogoo! :)

The game has a very novel and excellent game concept, and is eminently playable as it is; while under-going ongoing development. Looking forward very much to when it is fully finished!

The dirt track arena is bordered by an unfenced precipice, and there may also be a gaping hole in the centre of the arena. It sure is great fun trying to bash other player's cars off the edge or down the centre hole, all the while trying to avoid them doing the same to you and your car!

KarBOOM
KarBOOM 0.1.4 Thumbnail

KarBOOM is a car-crashing game with a multiplayer focus. The idea is simple: stay inside the dirt ring. Variety is added with mutators and game modes to change the rules of play, bots, online multiplayer and shoulder-to-shoulder multiplayer. The simple controls mean up to 4 players can play on one keyboard. Gamepad support means up to 8 players can play on one computer. Add bots or go online for up to 14 cars smashing each other around the place!

So far, all of KarBOOM's features are free. Check out the downloads page to find KarBOOM is a small free download that requires no installation. Offline play and all its features can be played as much as you want with no need to create an online account.
So what do I need an online account for?

A standard online account is free and lets you use the forum. KarBOOM is still in its infancy, and I could really use your feedback so I know what features need improving, what bugs there are, and what cool stuff should be added to the game!

A premium account is an upgraded version of the standard account, and it lets you play KarBOOM online against other players. I also plan on adding a few extra features available only to premium accounts (like an online profile, letting you share replays and custom levels when the replay and level editors are finished!).

Normally, upgrade your standard account by logging into KarBOOM.net and clicking buy in the navigation bar and paying me some money through Paypal. At least, that was the original plan. KarBOOM's final distribution model hasn't been finalised yet -- it's a work in progress, just like the game. Don't worry, though! For now it's just free! All created accounts are upgraded automatically (for now), and the whole game can be downloaded for free (for now) -- clicking on the Buy button will ask you to log in, and if you log in it will just thank you for upgrading.

Why are you giving out free upgrades?

Who wants to pay for an upgrade if there aren't enough users online to play against? To get things off the ground, all standard accounts created are automatically upgraded for free until further notice. The current public version is rather limited in online features, so future updates will have some new features to make it easier to host online games and to find an active game that suits your tastes.

Get in early and play KarBOOM! Get involved in the official forums and help me make KarBOOM reach its full potential. Check the announcements forum to keep up with the latest updates.
Why are you including this information about upgrading if, for now, it's meaningless?

I'm making changes as I go. This website could use a re-write, but for now I'm just trying to keep it current.
So what's in store for KarBOOM?

I regularly get requests from KarBOOM users, and there've been all sorts of requests I wouldn't have thought to add normally.

These requests have helped me compile a to-do list. While its contents are subject to change, here are the biggest changes that are planned:

Level editor: A level editor is planned for KarBOOM 0.3 (the latest version is KarBOOM 0.2.4) KarBOOM's future, and is currently in development. Its development has spawned some other changes that will be in the next update: There are different surface types (dirt, tar, ice), obstacles (ramps and barriers), and hazards (pits and grass). Levels use very little data, so players can easily share levels with each other and load custom levels for online games. This is a big feature, hence the change in version number from '0.2.x' to '0.3.x'.

Save and share replays: Replay mode will get new features in the near future, making it more interactive. This includes features like rewind, slow-motion, and scrubbing. Later on users will be able to save and load replays. When the level editor is complete, replays will include level information -- this means if you are watching someone else's replay and you like the level in which it is played, you will be able to save that level for your own games later on.

Race mode: It is a car game, after all. While the details are not finalised, the idea of a race mode making it into KarBOOM has been very popular indeed.

http://karboom.net/

KarBOOM is a bitesize freeware treat about some lovely little cars indulging in a spot of sumo wrestling on a high plateau above a bottomless drop. It supports internet and local multiplayer, the latter a ridiculous attempt in trying to fit four desperate hands on one keyboard, each sweating to control the adorable wind up bumper cars as they fight their way through a bevvy of game mutators that work much in the same way as Unreal Tournament handles things.

KarBOOM 0.3 Progress update 2 – Indie DB

In development since late 2010 and seeing regular updates driven by community feedback, it’s an easy spot of fun. The driving model skips merrily between “Oh yeah, I got this” to “Oh god I’m totally out of control please stop I want to get off”, usually whenever the Boost mutator is in effect.

KarBOOM is eminently customisable, allowing you to fiddle with all manner of victory conditions, bots and mutators. It just barely works at times, the merry chaos in the latest update supporting up to 48 cars in the same arena, in as much as that madness is actually playable (it’s not).

Follow the fun over at the official page.

G-Sector - 3D arena shooter (25.1Mb)

G-Sector is a brilliant and fantastic single player 3D arena shooter that plays extremely well and has excellent 3D graphics. It's really very exciting to play! There's a great review too at the download location. You fly a jet skateboard through futuristic locations with similarly mounted opponents and it's a mega-blast and real dynamite to play!

I’m astonished not to find this listed before on the free games project as although an older game, it is fully 3D and can be run in some screen modes in Win 7. Don’t be put off by the old-style installer, make no mistake, this is a superb single player 3D deathmatch game which has you riding a futuristic skateboard facing similarly mounted opponents. There are various arenas and futuristic cities to play in that are displayed very well.

You aim and steer with the mouse, using the left-button to fire and the right button to jump. You move using the ‘arrow’ keys and the Spacebar performs trick (and high!) jumps. ‘1 to 8’ keys to select weapons. You can gain extra speed and momentum by sliding down ramps. The aim is to eliminate all of the opponents in each arena. You get more challenging arenas and more difficult opponents for each stage you complete. You get 3 lives per game.

You’ll need to set the compatibility properties to XP in Vista or Win 7, and may not be able to use the Windowed mode, though the full-screen modes work perfectly fine. Attempting to use the windowed mode on my Win 7 machine caused the mouse to freeze until I opened Task Manager to end the game process. As I say, the Full-screen modes all work properly allowing the game to be played in Win 7. The windowed mode should run in XP itself without any problem.

It’s an awesome and amazing game that’s fantastic fun to play once you get used to the controls; I found them to come very naturally and be very easy to learn and use in the 3D arenas.

You won’t find much better gameplay with any modern game and the graphics are excellent given that it’s been around for a considerable number of years now! When this game first came out, it compared very favourably with full-price commercial titles and helped start the wonderful trend of some freeware games being of commercial quality!

This is absolutely the ‘tops’ for a free game and a very complete must-have for your games collection! Stunningly stupendous - and a really serious 'blast' to play! They don't come much better than this!

General Conflict (75.5Mb)

Like a 2-4 multi-player game that’s easy to learn, and highly, as in extremely addictively replayable? General Conflict is just such a game and has elements of Bomberman combined with the chaos of games like Super Smash Bros. Basically, you bomb platforms until there’s precious little left to stand on. Of course if you can blast all the other players into oblivion too in the process, so much the better! Before they bomb one (or many!) on you!

Last one surviving wins that round. So anticipation precedes survival amid total chaos if there are three other players each bombing platforms too as well as trying to bomb each other and you. It’s slightly less chaotic if it’s just you against another player, but not too noticeably so!

Players move around the platforms battlefield to collect bombs, which they can then throw forward or drop behind them. Exploding bombs destroy a layer of the tile they’re on and blast players away from them. If you fall in the water, your player dies. Players can attempt to climb back onto a tile from the edge by rapidly pressing a button, but this becomes harder after taking more hits from bombs. You do have a couple of lives and the ability to spawn where you want!

There’s also a team mode, as well as playing free-for-all. There are twelve levels in total as well as the two different game modes. It is hoped to add to these in future, by the game’s authors.

At the moment it doesn’t include on-line multiplayer access, but again should be added to the game fairly shortly. Once added, it will make the game truly exceptional!

The game plays in XP, Vista and Win 7, and in MacOSX. A pdf file explains the controls. A minimum of 2 'Xbox 360 controllers for Windows' are needed before you can play.

It’s a shame though that there aren’t keyboard controls as two Xbox 360 controllers for Windows will set you back about £24 (or US $33) or more, if you haven't these already.

The graphics are dazzling and outstanding, with sound to match, and gameplay is an absolute blast! (excuse pun!)

The game is hectic and totally unpredictable - and tremendous fun to play for sure! I doubt if you’ll have had as much fun in a long while!

Hi StevieD,

Check out the games synopsis which is on the forums front page as a sticky and also the Schmup's thread that you'll find in the games discussion forums (you can get to it indirectly via the free games synopsis). I'm busy right now so don't have time to find the link, but will later if you haven't replied.

I'm sure there are a few R-Type freebies amongst all the games we've posted over the last year. (S-Type for example, plus I’ve listed all the space arientated games you can download from XTC Abandonware. You’ll probably require DOSBox for a lot of them to work, but not all. I used to love R-Type and played it so much my hands used to hurt.

You can get R-type for free now. There are several sites you can download it from. The following is a decent one, though you will get a window popping up that asks for donations. the download is free:

These games are all spaceship shooters with interesting and unique features so they are all worth checking out. All the games are on the same page so the link to the download are at the bottom of this post.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ref-Lect Ball

Ref-Lect Ball is a spaceship shooter with an interesting twist. You have 1 minute to shoot as many enemies as possible to get the highest score. Luckily enemies don't shoot you. Unfortunately, any of your shots that hit the enemy gets reflected back which you have to avoid.

Controls:
Move - Arrow keys
Shoot - Z
Pause - P
Exit - Esc

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gradle Unison

Gradle Unison is some kind of abstract bullet avoidance game. Your ship can only move by teleporting and you are trying to avoid an endless barrage of bullets that are fired at you. Each time you teleport you also create a shockwave at the location you teleport to which destroys bullets and increases your score. The size of the shockwave depends on the distance you travel from the previous location, so traveling a further distance creates a larger shockwave.

Controls:
Teleport/Create Shockwave - Left Click or Z
Pause - P
Exit - Esc

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Z-Lock

Here is a suprisingly good game with an interesting concept. The idea is that the more enemies lock on to you the more powerful you become. Of course they are probably shooting at you so you have to move away from the lock-on but then you become less powerful. You can also use the X key to focus all enemy lock-on targets on your ship. This simutaneously makes you super powerful but also causing all enemies to shoot you at your current location (it also has to cool down after use). This game has mutiple levels and six different game modes.

Normal-mode: You can shoot a weak shot even when not locked on by the enemy.
Concept-mode: You can't shoot when not locked on, the Z key automatically functions as the X key, and your gun can overheat.
Original-mode: You can't shoot when not locked on.
Hidden-mode: Enemy bullets gradually disappear (they can still hit you when invisible).
Score attack: Try to get a high score in 3 minutes.
Time attack: Try to get the lowest time to obtain 1 million points.

Controls:
Move - Arrow keys or WASD
Shoot - Z or /
Capture Lock-on - X or \
Pause - P
Exit - Esc

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Area 2048

Area 2048 is a spaceship arena shooter. Kill all enemies in an area to reach the next area. Every 10 levels is a boss fight. You have a special attack bar that can fill up to four levels. When you press the X key you activate a special attack that fires a massive number of bullets at once. There are three different difficulty settings.

Controls:
Move - Arrow keys
Shoot - Z
Special - X
Pause - P
Exit - Esc

Niloy, start with upgrading your display drivers.
First, go to http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html

Pick your OS - Probably 32bit XP or Vista (you didn't say which) - then "Integrated/Motherboard" - then "Radeon Xpress 200M" - that will take you to the driver download page.

You may also need to download OpenGl which is freely available. Just google it and you'll get plenty of hits.

http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Utilities/Required_Files/OpenGL_Download.html

make sure your pop up blocker is enables. You can get drivers specific to whatever graphics card or on board chip (to find out what you have use the method Bubby has mentioned above)

http://www.driver-downloads.com/open-gl-driver.htm

If the second link is confusing, just post back as there are loads of guys who are pretty knowlegeable on this.

I had the same problem with a game recently, so just downloaded what appeared to be the latest software and it fixed the problem.

As always before installing this type of software create a restore point just in case something untowards happens. (perish the thought)

What video card is installed in your PC? (If you have no idea how to tell - Click on Start -> Run then type 'DXDIAG' (without the quotes) and press enter.

This will run the "DirectX Diagnostic Tool" - after it loads - you can click on the "Display" tab - then look for the "Device" box. The "Name" and "Chip Type" should tell you what Video card/chip is installed in your PC.

The Two main manufacturers of 3D Video cards are ATI and nVidia. There are other types though.
