Actually, I quite like Sky Bubbles Deluxe. I just wish they would put up a game that I didn't have. Boo Hoo, lol. Sky bubbles deluxe was given away about a year ago. It's a match three game where you have to match pastel colored balls togeher. You also have to free souls that are trapped inside the balls. Accomplishing each round gives you points which you can spend upgrading your bonuses, which include destructive bonuses that destroy lines and rows of balls , or increase the time you get to finish a level. There are quite a lot of power ups. It reminds me of Treasures of Montezuma (but not as good) with respect to the way things get harder and harder to complete a level. I always get stuck around level 12 becaue I always run out of time before catching the required number of souls (similar to collecting the gems in Treasures of Montezuma. The gaphics aren't as good, but then it's a lot older than Treasures.

It's definitely a must have if you haven't already got it. :)

Thnks for the update Suzzyqz

This is a neat little freebie and manager. I have received several free games from Alawar in addition to the ones I already own. There are sometimes network issues but if you are patient they generally are resolved over time. The Carl the Caveman free game has only just been offered so should be available for another 3 weeks if you are experiencing problems downloading.

I checked and there does seem to be a problem with the download at the moment. I tried to download it and it was stuck on 1.15% downloaded, for over an hour before I gave up. I'll write a message in the Alawar testers forum about it; hopefully they will get it fixed as soon as possible. I'll post a message when it's working (unless someone lese does)

Oops, sorry, about the lack of a link, I did actually go to Alawar’s page to get the download link, but forgot to post it. As I've said many times previously (I think), due to the morphine I have to take, my short term memory is appalling at times. This just so happens to have been one of those times, lol.

Thanks Suki for posting the link. Yeah you're right; the change over from one game to the next has been rather inconsistent, but they are getting better. :)

Hi Copmom; you won’t see the game advertised as free on the Alawar website. You have to have the game box installed to be able to see what’s free.

I will stand by what I said above (or think I said) and say that the game box is well worth the bother. It's none invasive and it gives you easy access to all of your Alawar games. For those who’ve been with the project for over a year and have not had to reformat, you will probably have quite a lot of Alawar games. If you fancy trying a demo of a particular game it's much easier to download. Personally I've not been much into game managers; and is one reason why I've not really got into distributor/developers such as Big Fish Games because to get a game from them you HAVE to use their game manager, whereas with the Alawar Game box, it’s entirely voluntary. I think the free ‘monthly’ game is a thank you for using the box. . Anyway, after using Alawar’s box I've changed my mind about these managers. If you can get free stuff just for using such an innocuous program then it's well worth it in my opinion. :) You can add any non Alawar game to the playing list, but it has to be done manually via the other games tab.

Since I posted about the free space shooter, there have been several games given away over at Alawar. They give away a different free game approximately every month. I thought rather tan p[ost in the Crusaders of Space thread I'd create a more appropriate thread for this monthly giveaway:

You do need to have downloaded Alawars Gamebox, which is a games manager, much like you get with the AstroGemini Screensaver manager. Well worth thhe bother in my opinion, especially if you can't justify purchasing many arcade games. You can download the gamebox via the following link, or if you already have the gamebox installed click on the free game tab.

This months free game is Carl the Caveman. It has only just been changed over from one of the Snowy puzzle games, so you can expect it to be available until mid July

p.s. thanks to Tommy1 for the heads up

The thread needs locking and when a new came becomes available someone could post details in the forums. :) Thanks for the info on Carl the caeman. I'd only checked the gamebox the other day and it was still Snowy.

I've not finished Treasures of Montezuma yet either. I was stuck on level forty something for ages, then did some minor upgrades to one of my computers, which has become my main gaming computer, and somehow lost my progress, so have had to start over again. Now I'm stuck on level thirty four, lol

I'd add number 8 to the above list

8) Funkiball. I'd forgotten how cool this game was. With a great story and some excellent board styles, unusual power ups and decent graphics, this game definitely deserves to be in a top ten list.

So.... here's the rest of my top ten (which changes a little as my moods change. Ricochet Infinity encompasses all of the Ricochet series.

9) Arklight (This is a cross between a breakout and a space shooter. I wasn't sure whether to include it in this list at first, but technically it is a breakout game. Though the sequel Arklight 2 is an asteroids clone.

10) Arcamania 2 (I loved the first one as well - It was given away last year - but received quite a bad press - which I reckon was because of the games difficulty, though some hated the sound effect also for the pass-worded saves were a little too retro for many. Arcamania 2 is frustratingly hard to beat. I 've never got further than about level 5 or 6, but I keep coming back for more. (I've had it for several years)

Some others that jump into my top ten occasionally are Z-Ball, Ultranium 5, Arkanoid the Virtual Isles (another previous giveaway), Magic Ball 3, Ball 7, Break In another frustratingly hard 360 degrees breakout game, Clash, Chaks Temple, Nuclear Ball (or any one of the Urse games such as Cow Ball or Inca ball), Super DX Ball Deluxe, Fizzball, Little Gods, and Takarin, a very unusual breakout from the guy who made Takamaru (Takako is his wifes first name). There’s probably lots more but I’ve not reinstalled a lot of my arkanoids since rebuilding my computers last September.

Alawar have posted two new games that may be of interest to arcade game lovers, especially those that love match three and arkanoid games. The first one is the sequel to Treasures of Montezuma called The Curse of Montezuma. There are similarities to the original such as the sand box at the bottom of the board and a cartoon style introduction; but the actual game looks a lot different to the original. I loved Treasures of Montezuma, but so far I'm not sure about this new one. I’ll have to transfer the demo to one of my other computers so that I can carry on where I left off (hopefully) and to see if it's worth buying though at the moment I don’t think I’ll be buying it :(

Curse of Montezuma download link:

http://www.alawar.com/game/curse-of-montezuma/

As for the second game called Bonampak; it belongs to my favorite genre, the Arkanoids. It’s advertised as being ‘made’ with fans of Hyperballoid and Magic Ball in mind! I’d agree with the former, but there are no similarities to Magic ball apart the obvious (to destroy bricks)

Bonampak download link:

http://www.alawar.com/game/bonampak/

I’ve bought every arkanoid that’s been released over the last few years (to my knowledge anyway), but I doubt I’ll be buying this one. Yeah, it’s got beautiful graphics just like Hyperballoid has; in fact I’d say the graphics for this game are better than Hyperballoid, but only just. It looks like you’re looking at the game through a hand lens as the bricks look much larger than the original Hyperballoid.

The game play is similar to it’s predecessor with respect to un-inspiring power ups and slow ball speeds, (even when set on hard). Also the bat physics aren't the best. There's no option to get rid of the last few bricks and I became so bored of trying to get the last brick when playing level 1, I ended up losing all my lives. I definitely wont be buying this arkanoid; which is a first for me since getting back into arkanoids following my accident nearly three years ago. I think I’ll return instead to one of my favorite arkanoids (that I’ve played over and over). The following are my all time favorite arkanoids (from amongst a couple of hundred from my arkanoid collection):

1)	Acky’s XP Breakout (The graphics are dated but the game play is underrated)
2)	Ricochet Infinity (Great game but IMO overrated)
3) Incrediball: The Seven Sapphires (The best 3D arkanoid for game play (IMO), though the graphics are a ‘little’ dated)
4)	Beat Ball 2 (You can get Beat ball 1.5 for free - see below for link)
5)	Reaxxion
6)	Breakquest (Every level set looks very different, with different brick types and a great power ups manager which allows you to pick and choose your power ups – theres loads of ball shapes and bat shapes as well)
7)	Breakball 2 Gold (This has several modes that extends the game play - I’ve had this game for several years and still not completed every mode/level)

You can get the first Beatball for free; either from the link below or from the arkanoids link at the bottom of this post, though I think the version number from that link is v1.0 as opposed to v1.5. there's also a link to Beatball in the freeware library:

Beatball v 1.5: (I didn't realize it had been updated)

http://shareme.com/details/beat-ball.html

And for those who haven’t checked out the arkanoid post in the forums you’ll find loads of excellent freeware, abandonware, browser and commercial (but being given away free) arkanoid/breakout games. I recommend the freeware breakout Poing (follow the link below for a link to this game) which has an unusual slant on breakouts and together with Breakball has great ball physics (try spinning the ball and see what happens)

Check out Garage games as they have some innovative stuff such as Chain Reaction, a really funny puzzler, which comes with a games editor. They also sell the torque game engine for creating your own games.

http://www.garagegames.com/products/browse/

Marble blast gold is a decent game, and also has a fanbase and there is an editor included. You can download a couple of hundred fan made levels. If you buy the game you can unlock all the levels by clicking the bottom right of each level. We spent weeks trying to progress through the levels linearily, but got stuck on one particular one in the medium difficulty stage, so deciced to use the bypass, and were glad we did. I've not played it for ages and have just discvovered that there are even mods being made for the game now. You can find out all about those and where to download all the free levels via the Marbleblast forums:

I too am puzzled by whats happening with Alawar. Previously they were offering two free games a month with the Gamebox, then this moved to one and now there is no mention on their website of a free monthly game. Mine is not due till the end of the month and the Gamebox still displays the page for a free game. We will have to wait and see I guess as to what happens in the future. I own five of their games from them and am sure that will have no bearing on proceedings.

I must agree with both Sukibabe and Stephen Whiterabbit that there does appear to be too many similar games from all the big gaming portals including Bigfish. What ever happened to Creativity and Innovation? I too have been doing the rounds of the major portals and am disappointed with the sameness and lack of something different. There are too many hidden object and time management games for my liking, how about some variety?

I will check out both Arabella the Fairy on Iwin and and Gish for something unusual. I understand that Gish is similar to Gumboy which is available on MostFun. I am pleased that others feel the same way, thought it was just me.

Bye for now.

I think you'll love Gish; it's really quirky. There's loads of add ons from the fan site as there's an editor that comes with the game (not easy to use, but if you persevere levels can be made.

If you ever get around to reading the forums ovr at Chronic logic, you may see a post of mine where I said I was going to re write the editors help me file, but I've been otherwise engaged ever since, though I did start (and hope to finish it someday)the help me

It's typical of the big game houses releasing a glut of particular games. You don't see anything of a particulr genre for ages, ten someone released a particularily good one and the market becomes flooded within monhs; I wonder what the next fad genre will be?

I'm always looking for unusual games, so will try out the ones you mentioned above when I have the time. At the moment I have to write several mission reviews for a particular Crysis mod that I'm affiliated with, and have been trying to sort out a problem with screen captures as the game doesn't have a screen capture facility and my screen capture device wont capture when the game is active. I actually used my digi camera to take images but they are not as good as screen capture images as the colors are all desaturated. (I may use photoshops to improve them though, lol) I'm also trying to play several games that I've purchased recently (I tend to buy in bulk, then have difficulty deciding what I want to play. I'm expecting two more over the next week (Assassins Creed and Rainbow 6 Vegas 2) both of which I pre-ordered awhile ago.

I do hope there's another run on arkanoids soon as I've been playing the last decent ones (Ricochet Infinity, Reaxxion, Hyperballoid 2 and Action Ball 2 to deat since they were released).

Boom Voyage is a nice looking 3D arkanoid, though I do prefer action ball as it's more challenging. I bought boom ball when it was first released a year or so ago, but only played the first 20 levels before getting bored as I found it too easy, though sometimes thats exactly what I want. :)

Yes, Alawar seems to be getting a little stale in the game department too!

I emailed Fish with some suggestions for betas I had done(because the were getting a little off too), within a week, they released 2 of my 3 suggestions!
The betas we have been getting at RA are already released, lol, better late than never!

The last one Oberon sent me was I.Q.: Identity Quest, which was good, but not exciting, Fish released that one March 29th.

I wish they all would get off the "Hidden Object" bandwagon and get something Fresh!

I played a demo from iWin called "Arabella the Fairy"(that was at the beginning of the year), and ended up buying it from them around St. Paddy's Day, because they had a 40% off sale. The game kind of reminded me of the first "Legend of Zelda game", but instead of Link with a Sword, it's Arabella with a wand! It's based on a maze(the name sounds girlish)that is quite confusing to get thru, and has lots of interesting pitfalls(like the floor all of a sudden disappears beneath you, your dead), the arrows on the floor that propel you forward(not careful, your dead)to an uncertain fate! I have been playing it and I'm still lost in that maze, lol, I get lost and end up in a level I had played before!
I also bought Dragon Stone, it is starting to get tougher, I can tell because I'm dieing in that one too now!
Since the lack of Daily games hear, I have been playing allot of demos, Ice Princess from Big Fish was interesting! You have to move this prince(who is encased in a block of ice) around a path, to get thru the level. Object, to get to the Princess of course! This wasn't as easy as I first thought! The block is 2 squares long(when the prince is lying down) and one square(when the prince is standing up), this makes for a good challenge, again, not to die!!!!!!
I saw your post under "Nuclear Ball", read your reviews at Reflexive, played thru both the demos and tried Boom Voyage, then went to Fish and downloaded another demo of Boom Voyage and played it again(they didn't have Nuclear Ball), I like the Alien space ships that help end the level, lol! I'm in a funk, so that's when the Arkanoids help! Those games are the best stress relievers around!!!!!!!!
Going to Google Gish now!

Hi Suki, I've had the same problem with alawar regarding replying to queries etc. I was surprised to hear about the charge for the game box; that came right out of the blue, though if they do start giving a free game away every month (which hasn't been the case up to now) it's probably worth it.

I haven't beta tested anything for a month now and rarely visit the site, though I've always tried to keep abreast as they were really good to me after sending me a christmas present last year (Christmas 2006) It was supposed to be free postage, but because the person who packaged up the stuff I got from them didn't put gift on the import duty sticker I was charged about $20 by the post office. They gave me a free game to compensate, lol.

I do think they need to expand their games though as the ones they have do seem a little tame. There's no unusual ones like Gish, Wik and the fable of souls, barrel mania or gumboy

WOW

I downloaded the Beta to my Desktop and Laptop, like I said on March 23rd, both are still there!
Mine still has the free game tab, but the game is still listed as the afore mentioned game, says, I already own it!
I never directly purchased an Alawar game, but have several from Fish, which the Box recognizes as demos, but are full version. I never paid attention much to the newsletters I get from them, and probably deleted most.
Whabbit, new one for Sherlock Holmes to investigate!!!!!! I know you have dealt allot with Alawar!
They accept my feedback, but just post it! Rather odd for a company that wants to promote a product, most others are free(ie....ya get it whether you like it or not), but they are taking a different approach with the $19.95 fee??????
Don't know what they are up to, but is confusing! My beta of the box, and the first thing when the beta of the box I downloaded(and I printed it out from their site) said I was entitled to a free game a month, no stings attached!
They also do not respond to my suggestions(even though they have my Email address)directly!
This is truly a Puzzle!!!!!!
