Hi, sarakzn, you wrote:

I did not receive any activate.exe file with my download. I therefore could not get the serial number to register on time. I am sure this happened once before.

Sorry, but that is impossible. Every user downloads the same .zip container.
There are no differences.
The software downloads come in a zip-file containing 3 files (Readme.txt, Activate.exe, Setup.exe) sometimes only 2 (Readme.txt, Setup.exe). The difference is due to the kind of registration the developer prefers. Inpaint had 3 files.
But every GOTD download of a certain day contains always the same files for all users. There is no discrimination like: users A,K,P,and W get the complete set and users B,C F, and sarakzn get a crippled download.

You have to extract the .zip-file to your desktop or any folder before you click the exe-files.
If you don't extract properly, you don't see all containing files and the installation might fail.
If you got a crippled zip file, it won't open at all, in this case you should redownload.

More luck next time.

Hi sarakzn -- I'm sorry to hear that you didn't receive the activate.exe file with your download. Since the giveaway has ended, I doubt there's anything that you can do now, unless one of the Moderators comments.

For future reference (and I've done this myself), delete the original download, and then re-download and unpack the zip. This will usually solve the problem . . .

Hi Sarakzn, welcome to the forums...

Per GOTD policy, you may download, install, and activate programs only within the designated 24-hour period, and not after that. If you have a great need for this program, then you can (1) wait until GOTD offers it again in the future, or (2) buy the program form the developer. Some of GOTD's policy verbage is below. Hope this helps.
____________________________________________________________________________________

Is GOTD a trial?
Every program we give away is not a trial. We provide you with full-functioning registered version of software titles.

There are two points you need to remember:

you have to install AND activate/register the product according to instructions given in the readme.txt file attached to every GOTD package.
it should be done while the giveaway offer for the software is still on (within 24 hours).
Still we do not provide you with the lifetime license in terms of the fact that our package can be used to install the program on giveaway date only. It means that you will not be able to re-install the program after PC crash or install the program on another PC after the giveaway day is over.

Problems and Solutions
Activation/Registration
My software claims to be in a trial mode. What should I do to make it registered version?

The procedure varies so we always enclose readme.txt file in all our packages. All the information on installation and activation can be found there.

I run Activate.exe file and GOTD says it was successfully activated, but the software is still in trial.

There could be several reasons:

If the software is already installed you have to close all program’s windows before running Activate.exe (don’t forget to check the notification area icons (bottom right of screen near the clock).
Make sure that you have extracted the files from the archive before installation.
When you run Activate.exe file it tries to reach our server. So check whether your firewall can block activation file.
If you are Windows Vista or 7 OS user you will probably need to run Activate.exe in the name of administrator on the PC (right click on Activate.exe and choose “Run as administrator”; the administrator’s rights needed).
I entered the code provided by GOTD, but it is not accepted and the program shows it is unregistered.

You need to check whether the code was copied fully or contains any extra spaces before or after. Don’t retype codes or names – use the clipboard copy and paste.

I downloaded, installed and registered the program on the giveaway date, but after time the version became trial. What’s wrong?

According to our terms and conditions the software gained from GOTD can not be updated or upgraded to newer version. Some programs still check for updates – once you agree to update you lose the registered version. Sometimes using a Registry Cleaner can erase program registration details.

But it said.... "activation was successful"

I believe the "activation was successful" webpage at the end of setup/activation is nothing more than a message that is displayed at the end of setup/activation (provided it finishes before the end of the "day").

It doesn't actually check that the software was successfully registered, or that you ran it with the correct privileges (It doesn't even check that you installed the software - try to cancel the setup on the first "cancel" button you see - and the webpage will tell you it was successfully activated).

The web page doesn't check your registry and read back the values that should have been written, to ensure that everything is as it should be.

Generally the message on the webpage that says "activation was successful" can be completely ignored. Just because that message comes up, really doesn't mean that the product will work. (I see lots of messages with users saying "I saw the message that xyz was successfully activated, but it still says it is unlicensed (or for 30 days only)".

The best way to tell if the software activated, is after following the instructions in the readme.txt file - just run the giveaway software. Check the usual things like "Registered to Giveawayoftheday", or "Licensed to ...".

Some programs do not actually have a "Registered to" or "Licensed to" message anywhere - all they do is remove the "Please Register" or the nag screens. It's a bit harder to tell in this case if you have never seen the software running in it's "unlicensed" or "shareware" form - (i.e. how do you compare it with something you haven't seen?)

Hi Nzn, welcome to the forums.
Please read the FAQ
to understand how GOTD works.

Every Giveaway has it's own installation and registration routine.
You have to unpack the .zip-file to your desktop or a folder and then read the readme file, in which you'll find how to register the programme.
The activation only makes sure, that this programme is installed in the allowed time.

Hi and welcome to the forums.
As I don't know what you have done, I can't tell you what is missing.

Unpack the .zip file to your desktop or to any folder.
Read and follow the readme file.
Run setup.
Don't run the programme or close it, be sure, that no icon for this tool shows in the notification area.
Activate.
When your OS is Vista, maybe you should run set-up, activation and the programme with the right-click-administrator.
If that doesn't help, delete the software, clean the caches and restart the procedure, this time run activation first and then set-up.

Good luck.

I installed & activated ANVIR task manager back when it was offered. The other day I ran it, and noticed that where it used to say why it gave a program a certain security rating, it instead said the trial period was over. So I went and checked the registration, and it already said giveawayoftheday and had a license number. But when I pressed OK instead of CANCEL it said it was too late to register it. I obviously didn't use this program often or I would have noticed this long ago.

I bet you are on Vista.

Run History Explorer.exe as Administrator. You will have to do this everytime.

I installed today's (1/15/09) giveaway History Explorer and used the Activate.exe to try to activate the product. It seemed to activate it just fine but when I went to use History Explore it comes up with a message that says: "Your License is not valid. Please visit http://www.exendo.org to purchase a valid license."

Is anyone else having this problem?
