Yeah, I know, I was thinking more along the lines of copyright issues.. if they can't see your pictures, no one can claim (falsely) copyright infringement. Hopefully, anyway...

not sure yet whether to get a subscription to photobucket so that there wont be as many problems with bandwidth when i upload images; that is if picdepict has to close down due to possible changes in the American legislation.

Have you tried minus.com yet? Free accounts, 10gb storage, drag and drop uploading, amongst other things.

I'm not sure where it will fall, as far as legislation is concerned, but you can mark files and folders private without it affecting web posts. People can't search for your files if you disallow it. It's what I used for my TES: Arena and Daggerfall posts.

I though I'd update the Kayak post to include images. I may post images for the other games later. not sure yet whether to get a subscription to photobucket so that there wont be as many problems with bandwidth when i upload images; that is if picdepict has to close down due to possible changes in the American legislation.

Although Kayak Extreme is now 10 years old it’s still the only kayak game I know of and it still gives me a buzz when I play it. Unfortunately the game has problems running in Windows XP, Win 98, win 2000 and ME are fine. I also have had the game working in Vista and before I allowed any updates to XP it also worked.

[quote]Race against the clock in this fantastic simulation of the ultimate white-knuckle watersport.

Test your abilities in a range of environments - Alpine mountain streams, African rivers and the thunderous flows of Alaska. There's also a training course to get you started.

Complete stages to unlock new Kayaks and paddles. You'll need to master the water to complete all three difficulty levels.[quote]

[quote]Whitewater kayaking action, without the cold or risk of injury! This is an incredible kayaking simulation that has to be seen to be believed. Incredible white water effects and realistic kayaking physics are just the start. Pilot your choice of kayaks through four different environments as you race the clock to unlock the next track. Execute special tricks and turbo strokes to paddle. [quote]
Reference accesed HERE Nov 2011

Features:

•	4 different environment - Training, Alpine, Africa and Alaska

•	A really great water effects

•	3 difficulty levels

•	3 different rafting boat

•	When people open the new maps

There's only one aim in "Kayak Extreme": beat the required time on a course in order to proceed to the next course. There are four different environments to race on; a training run, an Alpine mountain stream, African rivers and the thunderous flows of Alaska.
In order to access the main part of the game, you have to complete the training course in 1 minute, or less.

Initially you have one Kayak type and one choice of paddle. The challenge begins with a countdown, after which it's just you and your kayak against the flow of water! The water looks amazing in game, with underwater currents and hidden rocks. Take the correct path to beat the training time limit of 60 seconds. I can tell you now, unless you’ve played this game before I doubt you’ll unlock the next level until you’ve tried several times. From what I can remember you have to enter two of the gates in reverse (distinguished by a diagonal line through the gate number), which until you’ve got the technique isn’t easy. You can of course skip a gate, but that will cost a time penalty which is mentioned later. Those lost seconds (if you miss a gate can mean the difference between scraping through or failing miserably.

You can return to the training route as often as you wish, even after completing the training successfully . After completing it once, your progress is recorded so that the next time you take the challenge you can race against your previous best time, visually, as a "ghost" of your former run will be retained for you to compete against.)

Every course consists of a set number of "gates" (Starting at #1), through which the kayak must pass in order to avoid a penalty. The number varies for each challenge, but the rules are the same - gates must be navigated in numerical, ascending order, #1, then #2, etc. There are two types of gate: Green & Red (identified by the horizontal coloured bars that run down their length). See the images below for more information.

To pass a Green gate successfully, the kayak should go through the gate facing forward. To pass a Red Gate, the kayak must first pass the gate, on either side, and then turn to re-enter the gate, so that the craft is facing back up towards the start.

If a gate is missed, then a five second penalty will be incurred when the Kayak reaches the subsequent gate. Hence if you miss gate #1, you'll get a penalty when you negotiate gate #2. If a reverse gate is missed, this penalty is increased to 15 seconds. There's nothing to prevent the player returning to a missed gate and negotiating it correctly, provided that they have passed no later gate before doing so. Time is of the essence, however, and often it's better just to take the penalty if it's going to cost you more than five seconds to return to the gate you missed.

The course is complete when the player crosses the finish line. Any penalties incurred will be added to your overall time for the route. If your time (with penalties) exceeds the target set for the challenge, then you fail the level and cannot proceed to the next course.

To begin with, the times required are quite easy, but become harder as you progress. There are three levels of difficulty, and therefore three decreasing amounts of time in which you must navigate the route. The positions of the gates also vary, to provide more of a challenge as your skill increases.

In addition to opening new courses, your successful completion of some levels will open up new Kayaks and paddles. The performance of each craft differs, and it's up to you to choose the kayak and paddle combination that suits you best. What works for you once, may not necessarily suit you again.

Kayak Extreme can be played with a keyboard or game pad. The nature of the game doesn't really suit Joysticks, so we've deliberately not included these devices as an option.

There are TWO sets of controls available - Control set A and Control set B

Control Set "A"

•	Hold down both left (1) and right (2) cursor buttons to move the Kayak forward - alternate oar strokes will occur provided both keys are held down.

•	Holding the right cursor (2) only, will stroke the left oar, thus turning the Kayak gradually right.

•	Holding down the left cursor (1) only will stroke the right oar, thus turning the Kayak gradually Left.

•	Using left Ctrl (3) with the left cursor key will turn the Kayak sharply left

•	Using right Ctrl (4) with the right cursor key will turn the Kayak sharply right

Control Set "B"

•	Hold down both left and right shift to move the Kayak forward - alternate oar strokes will occur provided both Shift keys are held down

•	Holding the right shift only, will stroke the left oar, thus turning the Kayak gradually right

•	Holding down the left shift only, will stroke the right oar, thus turning the Kayak gradually left.

Turbo mode and Special Tricks:

•	In either control mode, pressing the Space bar (7) activates Turbo Mode.

•	Using either control set, you can execute special tricks

•	Eskimo Roll - executed by pressing the 'A' or ';' keys (5). This move can help you through the back flowing rapids, and can be used to roll under obstacles blocking your path.

•	Pirouette - executed by pressing the 'Z' or '/' keys (6). Executing a pirouette speeds you through water flowing against you.

•	When engaging the "turbo", a power bar appears on the right of the screen as an indicator to the player of the remaining time for the stroke.

•	When this bar is exhausted, the effect of the turbo disappears. The power meter will then recharge itself, during which time it cannot be activated.

•	F8 = Invert paddle keys

•	ESC = Pause menu

•	With the game paused, the user has the choice of:

•	CONTINUE - Carry on with the current level

•	RESTART - Start the current level again

•	EXIT TO MAIN MENU - Quit the current level and return to Main Game menu.

NB: Users with Microsoft Natural Keyboards - Using control setup 2 you may find that the shift key fails to function as normal. We advise users with these devices to use control setup 1.

Gamepad

Please ensure your gamepad is correctly configured under Windows before starting the game:

•	Click on "START" on the Windows Desktop

•	Select "SETTINGS" from the menu that appears

•	Double-click on CONTROL PANEL

•	Double-click on GAME CONTROLLERS

•	There are two "tabs" to the panel that now appears: General & Advanced.

•	On the "General" tab, ensure that your device is reported and identified as working "ok".

•	To add your device, click on ADD and select the controller from the list that appears.

If your controller does not appear in the drop-down list then you need to install the drivers that came with your device in order for Windows to recognize it.
On the "Advanced" tab, ensure that your device occupies the first available slot (ID 1). To change the order of any device in this list, simply click on the "change" button and type a new ID number at the flashing cursor position.
Click on "OK" to finish and return to the Windows Desktop.
Once in the game, go to the controls section and change your default control setting (usually KEYBOARD) to Gamepad.

Download:

You can download the demo from the developers site. Initially it looks like you have to pay for the game, but if you follow the links it takes you to a the download page where a message has been posted saying that the developer has converted the game to freeware. You still need a licence code to register the game. To get a free licence you need to create a Small rockets account (free), then you can get a free code for the game (as well as several other games that include a speed boat racing game and a motor racing game. Of all the freebies the Kayak game is the best with the speed boat coming second. If you like retro racing games the others are also okay. You need to request licences for each game.

You can find the game page HERE and the download page HERE

Sorry, I was more intent on getting the basics posted over the weekend; I forgot to mention it was a DOS game that would need an emulator like DOSBox. I didn't even get the images posted till today. Thanks Idunno for clearing the problem up for roblou. I'm still not with it at the moment. :(

You'll find a decent tutorial on using the DOSBox in the game discussion forums, posted by Wizzard of Oz when we first started this project. You can find it HERE

Hi, Roblou.

'Bureau 13' is a game designed for DOS, not Windows. You can still run the game through a software emulator for DOS.

A Wiki about the Microsoft Disk Operating System (MS-DOS) is here:

I'll post images later today. Need to go lay down for a while. :)

-------------------------------------------------------------

Bureau 13

Bureau 13 was a GameTek production loosely based on the popular pen-and-paper roleplaying game of the same name. You play members of a highly classified government agency, whose mission is to identify, track and exterminate all forms of paranormal and supernatural phenomena. To accomplish this you must set up a team using your six Bureau 13 field operatives, each with his or her own unique skills and abilities.

When you first begin the game, you will watch a small video highlighting the mission. Take care to read everything carefully, as clues are hidden in the briefing. Then it is time to choose the two operatives you will use. You can choose between Isaac Richards (the hacker), Delilah Littlepanther (the mechanic), Father Jonathan Blank (the priest) and Jimmy Suttle (the thief). In addition to these "normal" agents, you have two supernatural ones as well: Alexander Keltin (the vampire) and Selma Gray (the witch). Different agents will have alternative solutions to some of the puzzles in the game, so there is more than one way to finish the game. However, there is always a solution to the problem close by. If you can't pick the lock or use the vampire to "mist" through the door in order to gain access to a building, you can simply break the door down. (Not very subtle, but it gets the job done).

Since you are members of a highly classified government agency, stealth is emphasized in the briefing. You should try to leave all things the way they were when you arrived, meaning you should always close all doors after you leave - or see your score drop. However, this is to me one of the most pointless and stupid things in the entire game. I understand the importance of leaving a scene undisturbed in order to make it look as if no-one was there, but...!

First of all, this is only limited to the closing of opened doors, drawers, windows, lockers and the like. You can't put down items you don't need anymore, so if you take a remote control you can't put it back to where you took it from. Also, you can break glass without seeing your score drop. (Won't someone miss their remote control? And what about a seemingly undisturbed scene having a recent break-in?) Another thing that would at least get my attention is Delilah Littlepanther. This very beautiful agent walks around in her underwear, and to top it off she is wearing a huge, experimental, mechanized battlesuit! If this is the agency's idea of travelling incognito, then it is a miracle to me how they have managed to stay secret for so long. I would have loved to see more actions available to the player. For instance my idea for the police station break-in would leave no apparent clues (at least not for as long as the sheriff is in the hospital). I would have locked the evidence room door, placed the key back in its drawer and closed it, turned the power on, closed the fusebox, exited the room, and closed all doors behind me. The only thing the game would allow me to do, however, was to close all doors. So when the policeman returns, he will find the power turned off - walk into the sheriff's office to turn it back on - notice that the shelves in the evidence room are empty (as the security monitor is in the sheriff's office) - notice that the key to the evidence room is missing - see that the evidence room door is unlocked... It would take him three seconds to launch a warrant for the two people who just happened to visit the station a minute before all this happened.

Although the game is based on an RPG, the game itself is more of an adventure/puzzle game. The story is very linear, and just like in every other adventure game you will walk around picking up every little thing that isn't nailed down (and some that are). All your agents have been outfitted with specially issued infinite pockets, so you will have no problem bringing all your precious possessions with you. This includes such items as a big waste-basket of metal (right front pocket) and a three-meter-tall tree (inner left pocket). The realism of the game sort of fades away at this point.

Another thing that could have been improved is the talking. Dialogues take a long time to finish, and you can't fast-forward during them. So you must have a great deal of patience in certain scenes. There are also a couple of glitches in the game that must be mentioned. From time to time, the game will notice items on the screen that are not there. The reason is simple; the items are now in my carry-all jacket, but to the game they are still on the screen - so-called ghost images. You will also notice that the graphics might get screwed up at times (like when you close the fuse-box in the delivery boy's dressing room, and it leaves a black blob in the wall where the door used to be), but the biggest bug will have to be Eddie Houston's coffee table: By examining it you will be told that it is in fact a two-lane highway leading east!

When it comes to the graphics in the game, they are very atmospheric and cinematic (except for the occasional glitches mentioned before). The animations are also very pleasing to the eye, and the music in the game enhances the feel. In fact, the music is so good that the original game CD featured an audio track as well. That way you could play the music on your stereo if you wanted. The most confusing aspect of the game (at least in the beginning) is the controls, but after a very short time it will be easy to navigate through the game. However, I must mention a few things in order to ease your suffering. To swap between the characters you must move the cursor to the top of the screen and right-click. This will take you into an agent menu which lists inventory, special skills and the agents themselves. Click on the left or right badge to swap between them. All the objects you can interact with will change the colour of your cursor, and by right-clicking you will browse through the available options like Open/Close, Move, Examine, Talk to and so on. There are also shortcuts on the keyboard for the most commonly used actions like (T)alk and (O)pen/close.

All in all, Bureau 13 is a very entertaining game. The puzzles are just difficult enough to make you think a little, and most of them have quite logical solutions. It is a game which I thought was really interesting and fun to play, and one that I would recommend to anyone who likes to play adventure games which make you use your brain. Just don't expect too much realism from it.

Final Fighter: (13.7Mb)

Final Fighter is a simple yet fun nobrainer. You take control of a tank and your mission is to kill all the other tanks. The game is basically Quake Arena with tanks. Final Fighter can be played in two modes; Singleplayer and Multiplayer. Singelplayer is fun, but it can't compete with the thrill of going online and battling against your own friends.

The game available for download is the beginners package. It contains 19 different tanks, but only 1 level. (You can download more levels and tank skins from the net).
As for controls, they are easy to learn. You move with the cursor keys, aim and fire with the mouse, and you select the different weapons by pressing the numerals.

Sometimes there's nothing like firing the ol tank up for a little fragging action. Course sometimes that's all you need, a tank, some friends or some bots if nobody is available to play and just a whole lot of fun in the process, that's Final Fighter in a sense, simple but lots of excitement.

Story you may ask? What story, this is just the type of game that needs no story! Well anyways, there really is no story to be serious, it's just you, a bunch of other tanks and your goal is to emerge as the one with the most frags (kills). Simple enough right? More or less this task is, collect different weapons and blow up the other tanks. You can set your score of how many kills you want to be set, how many bots and so on. You have 4 maps to choose from and each one presents a different challenge and some have some exclusive weapons to each of them.

Graphic wise this game does a fairly effective job, they look very nice, from the weapons firing off, to the different tanks themselves, a nice job overall I found. Requirements wise also is pretty low and yet they still look pretty good. Music wise the game also does a fine job with, each level has a different track and they fit with the game play going on, nice hard rock/techno feeling shouldn't be too annoying and I enjoyed it.

However, if there is one gripe I had it was the controls. Now it should take you a couple of rounds to really get used to them. Drive with the directional keys and aim and fire with the mouse key, so it should take you a couple rounds to get used to this. As well the enemy bots that you face off against aren't exactly going to make it easy, so this might be frustrating to keep getting killed right away, even when you respawn sometimes. Finally the cheesy announcer that is used to announce kills and such sounds almost like a Schwarzenegger impersonator, but it is somewhat amusing, for like 5 mins.
Overall, this was a fun play and I enjoyed it, maybe it's the mindless killing who knows. If you're looking for a game to just frag away your enemies or even your friends online you should check this one out, it's called Final Fighter, definitely pick it up.

Or I think it is. I don't recall or my search didn't bring up this site here.

http://www.myabandonware.com/

"My Abandonware was created by utopiaweb to replace the former oldware.net

Our goal is to give a fast access to a lot of abandonwares......

For each game, we offer all the information you are interested to know: the year of publication, its publisher (s), its developer (s), size (weight) in the game, language, a test or more tests (description of the game, notes graphics, sound advice tester), suggestions of other games of the same subject or the same category codes and tricks, its manual and of course the archive game that you can download for free and in full freedom!"

I look at it as an opportunity to preserve a slice of history.

X-Setup and it's authors will not be gone until the last copy falls. As long as we remember.

I can no longer create, but should that be a reason not to preserve?

I agree. The same applies to Abandonware titles available for free download. I take this announcement as a gesture of goodwill from the X-Setup developers towards their supporters.

That said, I Googled "x-setup +now free" and found that several Tech blogs had reported the story:
