What is GOTD?

GOTD is the official abbreviation for Giveaway Of The Day.

Shouldn't there be an "A" in there too?

No. The correct word is "Giveaway". It is a single word. There are many interesting typos, like GOATD, GOTAD GAOTD, or GATD. But the correct abbreviation is GOTD. If you can't manage this, we generally get the idea of what you meant to say. With practice most people eventually get it correct. :)

Commenting about the negative comments number. I just discovered that if I +ed someone, they would lose a plus (+), but if I -ed someone they would lose 2 pluses (+).

So maybe the thought of people being trigger happy is actually the GOTD online software running amuck!

So GOTD please fix the numbering system. I certainly don’t want to take away for a person that I wish to support. Therefore, until this problem is fixed I shall not + or - anyone at all!! :-(

The reason why you can vote + and see 5 +'s or even a - is simply because voting is going on all the time while the page is loaded (in the background) but the votes only update when you reload or vote. While a user might see +5 in the voting - because others are also voting - it might actually be +3 at the instant when you click to vote +. Instead of seeing +6 you see +4 which is actually the up to the second correct total. It is possible there could be dozens of votes every second while you are reading the page - which is why the "last loaded" vote seems to be incorrect when the page is reloaded or you place a vote.

I hope that explains the voting a little better.

It has been put off for long enough. I intend to maintain this topic as best I can with answers to questions that I get asked "Frequently" (whatever that might be).

Future questions can be sent via PM and if appropriate will be addressed in this topic.

Thanks for bringing this back to the front page Quantum. I think i'll make it a sticky as theres so much here. oop's, it already is, lol

I wish I had the time to create a synopsis similar to the ones that G@rgoyle has done for the games and browser games, but I know she took quite some time to prepare them. maybe i'll work on it slowly then post it next year, lol.

I'm SURE that a Master listing of Freeware / Open-Source applications would be a terrific time-saver for many computer users, if it were possible to compile. Here's my addition (which I THINK hasn't been mentioned yet). http://www.cnet.com has an annual survey for selecting the best Web 2.0 Internet applications. The survey relies on votes sent it by users worldwide. The 2009 results are posted here.

Thanks for posting all these links to knowledge, wizzard... I never had the opportunity or direction offered me to even imagine I could attend college when I was young. My daughter is living that dream for me (kind of the "loving watching your kids get what you never had" scenario... and she is excelling leaps and bounds beyond that dream!) yet I've always done exceptionally well in endeavor I've attempted. Perhaps now is the time for me to seek more in-depth knowledge, and I'll certainly peruse your gateways here! Yeah, you can teach an ol' dog new tricks. Arf-arf! *&:-D

Though this isn't college courses, I thought they should at least be mentioned. HP offers instructional "classes" (short videos) that help people better understand Operating Systems, computer programs, online browsing, and security to name a few. For the less tech savvy amongst us, this is an excellent pool of knowledge.

Wizzard, I may just check out one or two of those links, myself, as soon as I get a big enough break from sewing...lol. I'm still plugging away at a formal gown I am making, that has to be completed by May 1. My oldest son, who is in the Army, just finangled a way for me to take some foreign language courses, so I just might be learning Spanish, here before too long. With all the Mexicans living around us, that would come in pretty handy! :)

Hi, wizz, sorry that I come so late again!
This is for me the best, most valuable, post I have read in these forums! I have looked for such a course a long time. Now you found and shared it. Thanks again! It is free and perhaps even more crucial to me, I can do the lessons in my own pace. In my own very slooooow tempo...
Have downloaded it and loaded my mp3 player with it - GREAT
graylox

PS:
Meanwhile there are some other links to explore, thanks guys, I will have a look at them too.

I originally posted a topic about a computer programming course that Harvard has offered free to the public, but was informed that the post was improperly posted to the wrong section (sorry sue! i wasn't sure where to put it!) I've decided to delete the old post and take her advice and carry on with the discussion here. I will provide all the links we gathered from the original post and hopefully continue the discussion here.

While you cannot earn credits for working through these "courses," in some cases you can obtain credits if you're a registered university student. Carnegie Mellon's Open Learning Initiative (OLI), for instance, provides credits to Carnegie Mellon and to other university students when their instructors provide a "course admit code" for registration. Otherwise, individuals who aren't students can work through the modules — which range from biology to statistics — at no cost.

sounds like you're counting.

in my experience the top-4 gotchas in moving apps (aside from updating the shortcut, and making sure the starting directory points right) are hardcoded paths saved in ini/config files in the program's directory branch, (some use the data directory- forte agent newsreader uses that approach) ini/config files in the 'documents and settings' snake's nest, installer additions to the path variable and finally ones in the registry.

Vous êtes très bienvenu, mon cher Mangoette.

The Dependency Walker has proved itself useful more than once in tracking down the source of a problem/glitch/conflict.
Sorry, can't help you with either version of COA since it's been years since I've attempted a program relocation with that thing. No longer have Norton to count on, either, so I'm in a pickle - wanting to move various things, and not even positively sure if renaming a sub-folder might gum up a GAOTD registry entry and lacking any confidence that my attempts to clone/image the C: drive will actually work when this HD finally bites the dust. Pretty aggravating.

At least I won't have to start from scratch, having saved zip/ex files and home page URLs for each and every one of the 19,482 s/w appls downloaded in the past year. (whether I've installed them yet or not) (applies to non-GAOTD, of course) Still, with every passing month, at least 675 are upgraded, meaning I'll need to download updates of pretty much all of 'em, but who's counting?

Les bons souhaits à vous et votre mari, Monsieur C.

GLAD to see you back WRabbit!
Missed your reviews last weekend. Hope it was an enjoyable trip :D

As a follow-up on moving programs, I did move several GOTD games without a problem, only had to re-do the shortcuts, as u said.

But when I moved the softs (within the *same* Program Files but to another folder), had a few problems, although they still work when I call them up.
==> All my Context Menu entries for those programs disappeared.
Is there an easy way to put them back?

I looked into AppMover that Samm posted. Looks good.
Most probably bc I'm I blind ... but didn't see a free version in there.
Not that it is that expensive either - but w 4 PCs, it's always x4!!
Does anybody know?

I need to move A LOT of softs btwn partitions on the same HD, on several PCs.
Anything that can facilitate this task would be greatly appreciated

Merci, Mangoette

Bonjour RM:
Thank You for the links to Dependency Walker, that seems to be interesting, have to study it further.
For COA32, boy ... can't seem to make heads or tails of that thing ...
