sounds like you're counting.

in my experience the top-4 gotchas in moving apps (aside from updating the shortcut, and making sure the starting directory points right) are hardcoded paths saved in ini/config files in the program's directory branch, (some use the data directory- forte agent newsreader uses that approach) ini/config files in the 'documents and settings' snake's nest, installer additions to the path variable and finally ones in the registry.

Vous êtes très bienvenu, mon cher Mangoette.

The Dependency Walker has proved itself useful more than once in tracking down the source of a problem/glitch/conflict.
Sorry, can't help you with either version of COA since it's been years since I've attempted a program relocation with that thing. No longer have Norton to count on, either, so I'm in a pickle - wanting to move various things, and not even positively sure if renaming a sub-folder might gum up a GAOTD registry entry and lacking any confidence that my attempts to clone/image the C: drive will actually work when this HD finally bites the dust. Pretty aggravating.

At least I won't have to start from scratch, having saved zip/ex files and home page URLs for each and every one of the 19,482 s/w appls downloaded in the past year. (whether I've installed them yet or not) (applies to non-GAOTD, of course) Still, with every passing month, at least 675 are upgraded, meaning I'll need to download updates of pretty much all of 'em, but who's counting?

Les bons souhaits à vous et votre mari, Monsieur C.

GLAD to see you back WRabbit!
Missed your reviews last weekend. Hope it was an enjoyable trip :D

As a follow-up on moving programs, I did move several GOTD games without a problem, only had to re-do the shortcuts, as u said.

But when I moved the softs (within the *same* Program Files but to another folder), had a few problems, although they still work when I call them up.
==> All my Context Menu entries for those programs disappeared.
Is there an easy way to put them back?

I looked into AppMover that Samm posted. Looks good.
Most probably bc I'm I blind ... but didn't see a free version in there.
Not that it is that expensive either - but w 4 PCs, it's always x4!!
Does anybody know?

I need to move A LOT of softs btwn partitions on the same HD, on several PCs.
Anything that can facilitate this task would be greatly appreciated

Merci, Mangoette

Bonjour RM:
Thank You for the links to Dependency Walker, that seems to be interesting, have to study it further.
For COA32, boy ... can't seem to make heads or tails of that thing ...

Most giveaways (both applications and games) can be directly copied to a new disc without using any external programs, provided the root disc (where you installed windows to) still contains the original windows installation. The registration information for each program stored in the registry does not change when you move these programs though you will need to replace the shortcuts you have in your start menu and any others you may use.

That is an easy process.

i.e.:

To renew the start menu shortcut follow the path below:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Start Menu\Programs

Then create a new folder and rename it to whatever the program is that you have transferred. Create shortcuts (by right clicking and selecting create shortcut) for the programs executable and if you wish one for the uninstall program as well as any links to the programs web site (if there are any within the programs main folder); then copy these to the folder you’ve created. You can also copy the programs executable shortcut and place it in a utilities folder or place wherever you normally place the desktop shortcuts that are created when installing most applications and games. There is an alternative method of creating a shortcut directly to the desktop using the ‘send to’ command. Right click on the programs executable {which is usually represented by some colorful icon} select ‘send to’ and then scroll down to ‘Desktop (create shortcut)’ – this sends a shortcut directly to the desktop.

HOWEVER, not all programs can be transferred in this way, so I would create a back up of each program you are transferring until you’ve confirmed that the transferred program still works. If it doesn't; just replace the back up to where you originally removed it from. (usually C:\program files\) Please note that the back up cannot be used on another computer; only with the computer it was originally installed on and then, only if you are using the windows installation that you used when the program was installed.

b.t.w. it's nice to be back after a very busy vacation in Egypt. Thankfully, the only program I think I'll miss not having was the one from the other day called Desktop 3D and the game from the last weekend in July called Astro Avenger 2. (I'll probably buy that one)

COA is a good suggestion, but Using COA and COA Reminders should be read thoroughly before attempting a relocate at home.

FWIW, I never bothered to migrate that ancient COA32 over to my newer system as it's description omitted WinXP. It's still available as a zip file on a site dated 1999. Be nice to hear if it works if Rallen's PC runs WinXP. There's a simplified, newer version HERE. (comes with a warning that the installer won't work with WinXP SP2)

Probably best to test it with a sacrificial application one wouldn't miss first (hmmm, like today's giveaway?), just to see if COA works on his/her system, if a GAOTD prog can be moved successfully, and to get familiar with COA's steps before moving something important. As I foggily recall, you gotta be darned accurate in typing the new addie, and physically move the primary folder to the new location immediately after running the utility. Relocating applications is one of very few situations where I actually miss Norton.

Whaddya know, Dependency Walker just fell out of Johnny Appleseed's dufflebag. Might prove helpful during such relocations, too. Actually, it might be a good addition for anyone's toolkit.

Well that's a recommendation for PeoplePC support if ever I heard it.

Not that you care anymore? I would ask them if they have worked out that the problem is either GAOTD or Wikifortio - perhaps they might share their testing results so GAOTD or Wikifortio can fix the problem.

In reality, the "standard support response" they offer, is designed to confuse and frustrate the user. I will attempt to translate into language most would be more familiar with:

"the problem is with GAOTD or the Wikifortio website".

Translation: Go away user and leave us alone. It's not our problem. Go bother somebody else.

I suppose if they won't answer your questions, you might assume they have Intercepting Proxy Servers in place and no matter what you do at your end - you will never be able to connect without problems.

Contact your ISP support and ask them if they have any sort of proxy or cache setup for dial up users.

Sometimes I have heard of proxy's being setup "silently" on the ISP's side to cache content to speed up access. If your ISP is having your connection go through proxy/cache server maybe this could be breaking the activation. (and you wouldn't see anything different from your browser settings etc)

Okay, I have read every post I could find on how to "fix" this blasted problem, but NOTHING WORKS! I am running Windows XP Pro, have more than enough ram, and room on my HDD. (And I use Firefox.) I have NEVER had a problem with activation, but as of late (the past week or so,) every time I click the activation key, I get the "invalid key" pop-up. I made sure my firewalls were off, EVERYTHING you people suggested, but NOTHING works I tell you. It seems the activation doesn't like the fact I am on Dial-up, (something I CANNOT help, as my cable modem has died,) because, as I stated before, I have NEVER had this problem! Is there ANYTHING else I could do? (Besides getting my cable modem back, har-har.) Waiting an hour for ONE download at a time is getting ridiculous, and I'm getting frustrated missing out all the time. :(

YES my firewall is off, YES my anti-virus is off, NO I do not use proxies, YES I have cleared my browser cache AND temp files etc, etc, etc, ETC!

"I’m sure that posts do get deleted, changed, and even corrected all the time – without notifications, explanations, or personal or public apologies. The amount of time and effort that would be required to follow-up with each member whose post has been altered would very quickly overwhelm the staff and slow down the process to a virtual standstill. The suggestion is ludicrous!"

Don't forget that not everybody leaves a real email address.

Planecrazy

If I follow the postings in “your thread” correctly (and considering the fact that you hijacked it – it may as well be “your thread”), you are upset because you think BuBBy deleted a comment of yours from the front page (comments section) a couple of days ago. Is that the problem?

First
Posting a comment on this site in no way guarantees that it will appear, or remain, in print. That is entirely at the discretion of the administrators and may, at times, be delegated to one or more (unpaid) moderators. Thus your initial complaint is entirely without merit.

You and I, as members, have no way of knowing just how many posts get removed - all comments are "submitted for consideration" - there is nothing written or alluded to which indicates that all (or most) comments will appear on the site, or remain after posting – I’m sure that posts do get deleted, changed, and even corrected all the time – without notifications, explanations, or personal or public apologies. The amount of time and effort that would be required to follow-up with each member whose post has been altered would very quickly overwhelm the staff and slow down the process to a virtual standstill. The suggestion is ludicrous!

Second
You state:

"While it's certainly true that another moderator could have taken my comments down, I'm 99% certain that it was BuBBy, and I base the confidence in my educated guess on the fact that ... he as much as admitted in one his responses that he had edited or removed some other posts."

I don't understand what you mean by - BuBBy “admitted” in one of the responses that he had edited or removed some other posts - editing and removing posts is one of the tasks moderators routinely perform (as a service to the members).

The process of moderating (from what I have seen and/or experienced) may frequently, at any point in time, involve more than one person taking action upon a group of posts and therefore it cannot possibly be inferred (or lead to the logical conclusion) that anyone in particular is responsible for an action merely due to its close proximity in time or space to another. To assume so merely serves to illustrate further your lack of knowledge on this subject.

Third
You conclude:

"...not only was BuBBy the one who initiated the debate about what kinds of comments belonged where ..." based upon the inclusion in one of his posts, the statement:
Please comment only on the software here. If you have technical problems or suggestions on our project, please leave us a note in our forums.

If, as you state, you are a frequent visitor to the site, you surely should have noted that this instruction is included, every day (by the admins), just above the comment box so that all who wish to comment will see it.

To criticize BuBBy for trying to help everyone understand how the administrators wish the site to be run does nothing to support whatever point you are trying to make. It not only serves to further demonstrate the limited amount of effort you care to expend in understanding how the site functions, but also is a reflection of the accuracy with which you participate. And to follow up on another of your insightful remarks:

" I figured it out - if BuBBy REALLY wants to make it up to me I'll get one last shot at downloading this tomorrow - yeah, like that'll happen - I don't think I'm gonna hold my breath on it..."

further illustrates your lack of understanding of how this site functions. BuBBy does not decide what is offered or when, as he has explained several times in the past.

Fourth
When you complain:

"First of all, I do not even remotely qualify as a 'troll.'"

What makes you think BuBBy was talking about you?

For the benefit of those unfamiliar with the term, I reference:
http://www.conradaskland.com/blog/2007/02/definition-of-internet-troll/

"In Internet terminology, a troll is a person who enters an established community such as an online discussion forum and intentionally tries to cause disruption, often in the form of posting messages that are inflammatory, insulting, incorrect, inaccurate, absurd, or off-topic, with the intent of provoking a reaction from others. Trolls can also be existing members of such a community that rarely post and often contribute no useful information to the thread, but instead make argumentative posts in an attempt to discredit another person, more often than not based on what they thought was said rather than what was actually said by the other person, concentrating almost exclusively on facts irrelevant to the point of the conversation, with the intent of provoking a reaction from others."

Then again, if the shoe fits ...

Fifth
As clobermier so graciously noted:

"I know, because I have been on the site since it started, how much time and work Bubby puts into this place. I doubt he's paid for it, either. But I've watched him help so many people who were having software troubles… He could have just ignored me, but he didn't. And he has done things like that for scores of other visitors to this site."

BuBBy has given generously of both his time and energy to this site ensuring that members who ask for help receive it. He has always done so in a polite, constructive manner, giving step-by-step instructions, researching information, supplying links and doing whatever else he can to help anyone who needs it or to improve the site, in general.

And Runesage Magi added:

To come here and DEMAND an apology from a volunteer who may or may not have removed your precious posts while he's been devoting way too many hours each day cleaning up the dreck made by nincompoops pushes the envelope of civility. BubbyCo deserves some respect if not your expressed gratitude.
To continue this rant by repeating your DEMAND just makes you come off sounding over the top obsessed. Chill out, life's too short.

I totally concur with your perception, RM, of which party in this discussion has repeatedly crossed the line and which, at all times, conducted himself with poise and integrity.

Finally
As for the post that you accuse BuBBy of deleting - if you'd bothered to check, it is right there at #140. What probably happened was that your post number and position changed as a result of the moderation of other posts in the vicinity - and you never even bothered to check.

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/starburn-9-5/#comments

As you, yourself, stated previously: “… silence speaks volumes.” I suggest you permit it to.
I’m sure BuBBy isn’t the type to demand an apology.
