Yep, it's that simple, I listed 25 games for the third anniversary weekend and have now also put them into separate posts, all labelled week 156. It's taken me a couple of weeks or so to do this. For indexing reasons when we (eventually!) get to update the synopsis (games index) they've been labelled to match the original post!

Going by normal week numbers it's now week 159 of the project, so my latest (and new post!) is labelled week 159! :)

Well imo, there could be two reasons. One is that there were a ton of games intended to be released on week 156 (the three year anniversary week) that carried over for a few weeks. Thus, we would be on week 159.

The other reason may just be a simple typo. However, I believe we've seen quite a bit of 156's for quite a while now so I would go with my first theory.

Are you still using Wire Notes Bubby?

No. Hasn't seen any updates or improvements since late 2007. Some time after that I discovered and started using CintaNotes for my random note taking. It is still being developed and quite a nice program - but it is text only (a lot of my notes come from web and pdf)

At the moment - I've purchased a number of different products that I have been using, trying to find which I like best and that I will use most. However I've found that while they each have some really nice features - they also have stuff I'm less keen on (ie. they are missing features I would like/want). I'm sure there is no golden bullet when it comes to discerning/fussy users.

Microsoft OneNote

CaptureSaver

AllMyNotes Organizer

Ultra Recall

PpcSoft iKnow

and the latest addition to the list -
Smereka TreeProjects

There are also a number of Firefox extensions such as Scrapbook, however it's main strength in being integrated to your web browser - is also it's weakness, when you aren't working in a browser (or another browser).

I'd love to see a full version of Personal Brain 6 (either Core or Pro versions) be offered on GOTD or one of the software discount sites such as http://bitsdujour.com/ - There is a free version available - then the price jumps (!) to Core ($150) and Pro ($250). I really want good file attachment and seaching capabilities (the free version is lacking here) - but I'm hoping that Smereka TreeProjects will come to my rescue.

So, no... I'm not using WireNotes anymore - Things had to change, because I just couldn't tolerate how simple my life was back then.

I had cause to revisit the wireplane website to see if I could download the latest version of their software wire changer, which i purchased shortly after it was given away here on the giveaway site back in 2008. It was a program that basically gave XP a similar desktop style to Vista with a side panel and loads of desk top gadgets. When I originally ordered the program I accidentally chose wire keys (another giveaway) and it wasn't until I tried to activate the demo of wire changer that I realized my mistake. So I wrote to the developer who immediately (within about 2 hours of me writing) sent me a key for Wire Changer and told me I could also keep the key for Wire Keys at no extra cost. Anyway, while visiting I noticed that one of their other products called Wire Note is free. I don't know whether it was free back then but just in case it wasn't I though i'd post the information here so that the community can check it out.

You can find the main page HERE

p.s. I searched the forums for any info on wire notes and came across this four year old post. Are you still using Wire Notes Bubby?

Why would you purchase a license for something you got from GOTD for free?

Unlike the Giveaway version of the software – A purchased license is usually entitled to.

1. Tech Support
2. Future Software upgrades & updates (bug fixes, improvements, new features)
3. Can install and reinstall the software as required. (not limited to installing during the 24hr giveaway)

Sometimes:

4. Additional discounts on other products from the same developer.

Yes in terms of software features, the Giveaway “free version” is the same as the “purchased version” – but as listed above there are other entitlements available only to users who purchase a license (as opposed to users running only the “free version” from GOTD).

Finally, by purchasing a license it is more likely the developer will continue to support and improve that software (and that is really what you want).

Like others, I downloaded and installed 'Auslogic's Speed Boost 5', advertised on GOTD, last week, and the version was a trial asking for full payment after the trial. I wrote to the company explaining I am a member of GOTD, and got the "unexpected response to the product" reply. My question to you is, why is the link still on the home page? There are enough complaints about this to remove it.
I will never download anything from them at all now, after this trick!

Purely FWIW, hoping that it might help others to *maybe* understand better, maybe modify their approach talking to companies like Auslogics...

Now NO offense intended towards anyone, but when you sell stuff, whether it's a retail operation or you work in a service industry, some percentage of customers try to lie &/or cheat &/or steal. It's very easy (almost too easy) then to think or assume people with a legitimate problem are trying to rip you off. If you read *some* [not all] of the posts over at fatwallet for example, some people really take this adversarial stance, where putting one over on a retailer is really celebrated as a big win. People & companies that sell stuff don't absorb added costs -- they're passed on to every customer or else they go out of business. It also effects seller's attitudes -- Auslogics may just be trying to blow off folks they assume are trying to rip them off... I'm NOT saying anyone's not on the up & up, but put yourself in their shoes, & imagine someone says: "Hey, my free key stopped working so please give me a new one". Right then, right there you have no idea whether they actually got a free key or not, whether they're trying to rip you off or not. It doesn't help when someone goes into attack mode -- everyone's heard the "squeaky wheel gets the grease", & people trying to rip you off use it more often than those with legit complaints/problems.

That said, & again in hopes it might be of some help, looking at my files/records for the BoostSpeed GOTD, it seems to use a more complex licensing/DRM scheme. It looks like the app uses the key in the GOTD Readme file & stores registry values based on both that key & something unique to the system, probably hardware but beyond that I don't know. Whatever it uses, values can change & the app stays registered -- my guess would be that like Windows, exceed a certain threshold of changes & the license deactivates. I hadn't kept BoostSpeed installed, but testing today the app both works & reports it's registered -- today (for me at least) there isn't a problem with the key expiring & there's not a problem with any on-line server. Apologies for being so vague with no specifics, at the same time hoping I was vague enough that this doesn't get deleted.

I know this is a bit off subject, BUT if you all are still looking for a good download accelerator/manager then I have one that I have been using for years. DAP (Download Accelerator Plus). (It is free (there is a paid upgrade available that claims to be much faster, but I have never paid for it or seen it in use)though offers some other software during installation, does have a few boxes to uncheck in installation (for SpeedBit browser bar I believe), and has some small advertising boxes while it downloads, BUT never has been any problem of any kind. Anyway, it does download much quicker than without and integrates into most any browser to help with the download. Also, it offers the choice of downloading without using the accelerator if you want/need to. It can be downloaded on download.com (cnet.com) for free. Again, when you install it read what comes up to be sure you don't miss one of the obvious boxes.

Just thought I would mentions it for those looking for one without worrying about 'trail time' etc.

Regards,

Exactly. :)
I think "a technical issue' 'due to extraordinary user activity ...so further activations became impossible' is a lame excuse for all the disappointment they caused.
Although the program seems to be similar/or even better than some other well know brand programs,a 15 days extended trial is not likely to attract the users that were left in the cold and to promote Auslogics BoostSpeed.
I don't know what their promo activation limits were, but in the past I noticed a program from another dev that had a limit of 30.000.

Perhaps developers who decide to be involved should be made aware that there could possibly be 10,000 or 20,000 users (or more) who might be interested in their product. If the giveaway ends up being more popular than the developer anticipated - a "technical issue" shouldn't be the reason that only the first users to download are entitled to it.

The same applies when developers decide to issue registration or serial numbers via their own system - and then discover in the first 20 minutes of the giveaway that they are completely overwhelmed and unable to cope with the load.

If there are dependencies on being able to activate the giveaway software on the developers side - they really should be prepared and capable to meet demand for the entire duration of the giveaway for all users.

The GOTD team should have a checklist that they provide to developers mentioning these potential issues. (I don't know if this is the case at the moment). To discover "technical issues" like running out of serial numbers halfway through a giveaway really makes GOTD look like they have just started the site last week and never anticipated these problems - but GOTD has been running for years, and yet easily avoided problems can be, with some planning. After all, these problems have happened several times before. Learn from your mistakes?

Developers should take it as a positive that so many users want to use their software, and hopefully a percentage of those users will subsequently purchase a full license (either when future upgrades are released, or the user wishes/needs to reinstall the program).

Turning away potential customers because of a "technical problem" on the developers side - isn't likely to instill much confidence in a user (for now or in the future). Most users don't understand the real reason why the program wouldn't install or activate - they just see that the program didn't work, and that is never the impression a developer wants to leave with a user after trying their software.

Darn-it Ah well, I may just purchase a licence as it's done a good job on my XP loaded computer. I won't use it on the Win 7 machine though as I'm happy with that one. I don't install much on the Win 7 loaded computer apart from my games, so there's no real need for it.

However it's odd that the one I installed on a third computer also says registered. I've just checked it again and it's definitely registered and I used the link that you showed in your image above as opposed to the actual giveaway. Either the registered version has been replaced with a non registered version after a specific period has elapsed or I can only think that we must have had the giveaway previously and I'd installed it to that computer. I gave it to my son (now 12 years old), so haven't kept track of all the old giveaways that were included on the computer. If that is the case I can only assume that the old reg key still works with the latest version. :)

If anyone can confirm using the link that Graylox showed in the image above and now have a registered version it will clear the confusion up. Afterall it was only supposed to be a temporary reprieve.

Sorry WR that I have to spoil your party.

I didn't install the Auslogics giveaway back then because I don't use such tools, so I can't say anything about the registration of the GOTD.
However I downloaded this "extended giveaway" now, just to test the registration.
This is NOT an extended giveaway, this is nothing more than a demo for 15 days.
When you click "Register" you get the order-form with the full price.
The uninstall procedure was highly annoying. First they warned/frightened me, my system would not have been fixed yet (I never scanned with or used the programme), then they wanted to know why I uninstall the tool and in the end their home-page opened and offered me a rebate of 50%.
The link "For Giveaway of the Day Users only" is nothing more than an advertising - and AdblockPlus killed it.
After the stunt Auslogics pulled with the registration and those letters to potential clients, this kind of advertising is rather .... (put in whatever you like)

Hi FGS,

As Graylox points out Auslogics have offered an extended giveaway. I installed the latest offer on a third computer and it worked fine and is registered (didn't have time on the day of the giveaway because by the time I'd sorted two computers the time was up......... :)

I originally installed the program about 10 minutes before the end of the giveaway on two computers (one XP Pro and one Win 7 Ultimate) and both are working fine. I clicked on Help/About today and both say 'registered'.

I am VERY pleased with this program and can only say thank you to Auslogics not only for giving this to the giveaway project for a day but also for extending the giveaway for an indeterminate time so that those who had problems activating it the first time around get another oppertunity.

You've got to remember we are getting these programs for free. I think Fly by Night is a little strong, but that's your perogative.

Hello,
Thank you for using Auslogics BoostSpeed. Sorry to say, but we’ve faced a technical issue - BoostSpeed protection system allows only a limited number of activations for each key. Unfortunately, the expected demand for BoostSpeed on GiveawayOfTheDay was much lower than real and activations limit for this promo license code was exceeded due to extraordinary user activity, so further activations became impossible. We apologize for such inconvenience.

Best regards,

Instead of this: ¨Unfortunately, the expected demand for BoostSpeed on GiveawayOfTheDay was much lower than real and activations limit for this promo license code was exceeded due to extraordinary user activity, so further activations became impossible.¨

They should be more than happy of the responce they got.

Sorry to say, but to me, these people acted as a genuine FLY BY NITE outfit.

Dunno why it says "For Giveaway of the Day users only".
It appeared to be a 15 (or was it 30) days trial on this side.
Well, I guess I'll survive. :)
