BBC Steps Twelve Week Language CoursesThe BBC also offers free language classes online. You sign up and they email the lessons to you. Here's the little description from the site:

Sign up for the Steps, Ma France and Mi Vida Loca Courses and we'll send you a weekly email offering encouragement and tips to help your language learning. And it's free of charge!

The aim is for you to complete a course in 12 weeks, followed by an 'end of course' assessment to see how well you've done. You'll even get a BBC certificate! You can choose from six different courses in four languages: French Steps, Ma France, Spanish Steps, Mi Vida Loca, German Steps and Italian Steps.

Stanford Engineering professors are offering three of the University's most popular computer science courses online for free.

The three courses, Machine Learning, Introduction to Artificial Intelligence, and Introduction to Databases start October 10, 2011 and go through December.
Registration is expected to start in September.
While online classes offer enormous learning opportunities and other benefits, college credits or a college degree aren't included. :)...

This isn't college classes or anything but this a wide range of information on this site especially computer related things. However, the real gem of this site is for all you parents or grandparents to young children. There are things such as reading and math that would be great for the younger ones.

Though this isn't college courses, I thought they should at least be mentioned. HP offers instructional "classes" (short videos) that help people better understand Operating Systems, computer programs, online browsing, and security to name a few. For the less tech savvy amongst us, this is an excellent pool of knowledge.

You're very welcome watcher, and thanks for the links you provided. I used to aspire to be a teacher, so all these websites are encouraging to me because I believe people should be able to get the education they want and need.

You're welcome everybody, I'm so excited that I've found all these sites. I really do advise everyone to check out the misc. links too, especially the second one, because there are some great sites that would have been WAY too many to post in one posting.

I originally posted a topic about a computer programming course that Harvard has offered free to the public, but was informed that the post was improperly posted to the wrong section (sorry sue! i wasn't sure where to put it!) I've decided to delete the old post and take her advice and carry on with the discussion here. While you cannot earn credits for working through these "courses," in some cases you can obtain credits if you're a registered university student. Carnegie Mellon's Open Learning Initiative (OLI), for instance, provides credits to Carnegie Mellon and to other university students when their instructors provide a "course admit code" for registration. Otherwise, individuals who aren't students can work through the modules — which range from biology to statistics — at no cost.
