Thanks, Watcher13, that is all very helpful, and not talking down to me at all.(I've come to games only recently, having been uninterested in them before. But I've had more time of late, having health problems.)I am enjoying it, but have felt there were things I should have known about how to play more effectively, and improve enjoyment. All the posts answering mine have helped me to understand the game better, so thanks to you all.

Crescent, I hope you don't think I'm talking down to you. I expect your just looking for something that isn't there. In other words, you might be making it overly complicated, and trying too hard. Maybe you should create a new user and start over, not worrrying about surviving or high scores, but take it nice and easy. Take your time and read the hints. Look the board over for a second before you start matching. Look for the bonuses first, and try to work them off the board before you work all the puzzle pieces off. And you can always go back and replay a level if you miss the bonus, as the game suggests several times. I suspect you're just used to faster games. In Match 3, there's often ample time and you don't need to feel rushed. I'm not saying it's exactly zen like, you do have to concentrate and be aware of the time. But it doesn't require the quick decisions of a Tetris or shooter style game, or the level of staring at the screen of a hidden object game. If you just take your time and work somewhat systematically, you'll find yourself seeing all kinds of matches on the board, such as the 4s and 5s and occassional L shaped 5s (where moving one tile to the corner of a junction of two sets of 2 matched tiles gives you 5 matched tiles). Obviously that'll allow you to charge up the sun, in the case of this game, anyway. Try it that way, and I'll bet you'll enjoy it a lot more.

Like the padlocks. Look to unlock them early. If you look at them first thing, you'll almost always find at least one that has an adjacent tile of the same type and a 3rd tile nearby that can be moved into line, breaking the padlock. Or at least breaking one of the chains right away in the double locked ones. As to bonuses, if you're getting tight on time and most of the puzzle pieces are near the bottom, you can usually take a second and place a bomb and free all your blocked pieces without running out of time. Though charging up the Sun by looking for match 4s and more when your momentarily stuck can allow you to save a bomb for later. Get a feel for your boards, too. Later on, you'll find boards that have enough missing squares that it's very hard for 4s and 5s to form, so you might not want to waste too much time looking for them. If you have only one piece blocked by one tile, or two pieces blocked by the same kind of tile, and your running out of time, it might be the perfect time to spend a lightning bolt. Also, try to watch the shape of the board and avoid letting your puzzle pieces fall into tough areas, like the single file areas at the bottom of some boards, or behind locked tiles. Try to look for matches that will you let you swap your puzzle piece horizontally, out of the bad row.

Again, I'm not trying to talk down to you. On the contrary, I just get the feeling that your not enjoying it because your trying too hard. Just start over and take your time and let yourself sort of grow into the game and I think you'll enjoy it a lot more. I'm systematic, but not particular fast or observant, and I'm able to play these games competitively, though not necessarily well. In fact, I'm so limited as a gamer, I doubt I'll ever finish one. But I'm sure enjoying the try. Relax a little, and I'll bet you'll enjoy it a whole lot more.

Watcher13 :)

Thanks-I must have seen the hint for unlocking the padlock, but the only way it's been released so far is by using the sun bonus,or clicking on it with the lightning! I've not been succesful in trying to make a match of 3 with them, so I've obviously done something wrong.(I've got to stage 7 in Babylon, more by luck than strategy! )

The empty squares will be because some tiles are frozen, so no tiles can drop beneath them. There are some fields where you need to start at the top and unfreeze the tiles first (by matching once or more), otherwise you end up with a tiny game area. Some of the Rome ones are like that, if I remember rightly.

Sounds like you're making progress, though!

Sorry, Crescent, but they do give you the padlock tip. It's stage 3 of Babylon, though it could maybe be clearer. I assume you long ago figured out that you break them by making a match 3 with them. I believe the swap first shows up in Egypt. It's a blue circle with gold swirls inside that symbolize the swap. It's kind of infinity symbol like.

Thanks, both.Yes, the tips are turned on.I see how they are helpful, but I don't recall seeing anything about getting rid of the padlocks, and, I've reached a level where there are some empty squares. Are they just to make things harder ? I haven't had a swap bonus yet, I suppose. What does it look like ?

Crescent, you asked, it makes me wonder if you have your tips turned on. If you don't, as each bonus is introduced, the game will explain it to you. That's how they get out of having a big help section. A lot of people eyes glaze over trying to read lots of help pages, so developers have found introducing concepts gradually as tips generally works better. If you do have them turned, you may just not have gotten to the swap bonus, yet. I don't think there are any bonuses that aren't explained. If your tips are off and you're unaware of how to do it: menu>options, then click "show tips". It's pretty standard in most games. Also, in this game, after each level there's a tip under each scoreboard. Some are strategy suggestions. Can't vouch for them all, but they look pretty good. Think of them as food for thought.

For the swap, you click on the tile you want to get rid of and then on another one to replace it, and the two are exchanged. You would use the swap when you have two matching tiles and need a third. It's useful for moving the object pieces sideways later in the game. The thing to watch out for is not to set off unwanted cascades of tiles by mistake and ruin your strategy.
The bomb destroys the tiles in a particular section of the board; the lightning eliminates all the tiles of a particular kind, making it easier to create matches. The hourglass gives you more time.
Happy playing!

fifogigo - not sure. Timing issues can be notoriously difficult to track down. Some other games I have (older games) just run at erratic speeds on Dual Core Processors. Changing some settings (Processor Affinity - to only permit one core to be used, fixes the games in this case).

Perhaps we can get the developers to look at this topic - and with some of the issues explained - and some willing users who want to provide some useful feedback maybe we can help squash some bugs.

Without even needing to read through the log file - if your video card is only capable of DirectX 6 operations (in hardware) some games might make up with the shortfall by emulating the missing features in software. Maybe this game doesn't attempt any software emulation. So if the video card isn't at least DirectX 8.0 or higher with Video: 32 MB - the game will not run.

I have no problem running this program either, but I did notice that it makes a "log.htm" file in the "Application Data\TERMINAL Studio\The Rise of Atlantis" folder. Some of you who are knowledgeable enough might be able to read that and determine what is causing the error.

It has to be something with the system configuration. Installed and is running fine on my laptop, by my son's pc also goes blank right after the initial screen. We restarted pc, but to no avail. It simply won't start the game.
If anybody finds a fix, please post.

I just tried both download links for the game, and both work very well for me. I really do not know what to tell you now.

I suspect that a Mod will be along shortly, and have better suggestions for you. That's why they get the big bucks! :-)

I have winxp sp2. I've never had a problem before downloading games from here. I upgraded directx to 9.0. I tried the mirror link again to get it "real" message and it says The Compressed (zipped) folder is invalid or corrupted. Now what... and please use regular language cuz I'm not very computer-smart! LOL

Thanks again!!

Hello, ladies!

I installed it just to see if I got the same problem, but it works fine on my system. WinXP SP2. Maybe it's something to do with your system config? Neither one of you mentioned what you run on your computers... Might be a DirectX problem or something of that nature. Why not review what the system requirements are for the game, and at least eliminate any problem like that??
