I'm SURE that a Master listing of Freeware / Open-Source applications would be a terrific time-saver for many computer users, if it were possible to compile. That's uncanny Geek Girl, I almost posted a Commander Keen title last night as part of my platform day effort, but thought it was too good to be included with others (though it may have been the Duke Nukem one - I'm not sure .... I have so many games titles swimming around in my head at the moment. This project has really got my brain working on trying to remember all the games I bought back then in the early days of computer games - ahhhh the nostalgia, lol.

I have another game that's remarkably similar in title to that Commander Keen title, though it's another subject matter than baby sitters, lol - I thought it may be part of the same series, but they arn't connected in any way.

I was gob smacked when I first discovered the extent of abandonware. All the old games I bought are now free. One of my favorites (the name of which I wont mention because it's going to be the subject of a weekday games post in a couple of weeks {It also had 12 floppies and was just over 11Mb in size}) There's an amazing number of games available out there. I've found loads at Abandonia, and really look forwards to posting them here. I'm tempted to just post the whole lot and be done with it, but I think posting one or a few a day is a much better way to introduce the community to the wonders of freeware games. Monday's game will be an abandonware title.

Abandonware anyone? These are formally commercial games which have been abandoned by the companies that went out of business or are giving away. For example EA Games is giving away Command & Conquer Red Alert One free for download. (Some companies, such as Apogee, gave the first episode away and you only paid if you wanted the entire series...usually two more games.)

There are places like Abandonia that have a lot of good, old DOS games. Some you can run straight on XP. Some will need a DOS emulator called DOSBox. And yes DOSBox works on Vista Home Premium.

Thanks for the link gtoal. The first computer game I ever bought was a text based adventre called 'The Island of Artuan' bought in the mid 80's. It was stored on one of the first ever hard case floppy discs for a computer called the Einstein 84 which cost me the equivalent of $40 to buy.

The one great thing about software redundancy is that it all goes on the freeware list eventually, lol.

W2K...I sometimes wish I hadn't replaced it with XP.

I still have that version and I'd love to work with it again.But I don't know if it's possible to make a dual boot *after* you have XP installed.
There should be a trick to do this but I can't find the workaround anymore.

well, yeah, to most of that, but ghost doesn't care as I use ubcd 4.11 to boot freedos to run it.

I'll see what it does when I get to it.

terri's running (just fine) a test restore from a copied (and dvd saved) ghost image of a 4-gig drive with a basic-needs install including drivers, so I'll never need a win2k install disc for that machine again.

I'm gonna do that for all of 'em.

Does Ghost 2001 still work well with WINXP?
I always used Ghost in the past(prior to XP), but they kept launching new versions so I assumed it was not recommended anymore.(Or how to milk the customer?)

I guess EASEUS disk copy works a bit like Acronis True Image...(sector by sector copy)
