The Toughest Road Surface Of Them All

A piece of road walks into a bar and declares to all its occupants: "I'm the hardest bit of bitumen in the whole of this town!"

The piano player stops and the bar goes deadly silent. After a brief pause, all eyes drop, the pianist returns to playing and the piece of road saunters up to the bar and orders a beer.

At that precise moment, in walks a piece of freeway which says: "I'm the hardest bit of bitumen in the whole country and I'll take you on!"

The tension mounts, other drinkers scatter and take cover. The two braggarts stood, staring at each other, for what seemed like an eternity.

Once again, the door opens and, into the middle of the stand-off, walks a strange-looking piece of coloured bitumen with a blue stripe. Suddenly, the stand-off is forgotten! The now-sheepish braggarts turn their backs to the door, sit down at the bar and stare quietly into their drinks.

The bartender sidles up to them and asks what the problem is. "Shhhh!", says the freeway, "Watch what you say, that guy's a real cycle path."

I just found this on the Make Use Of site, credited to utdallas.edu.

Error Messages From Japan:

Here are 16 actual error messages seen on the computer screens in Japan, where they are written in Haiku.
Aren't these better than, "your computer has performed an illegal operation"?

.......................................................
The Web site you seek cannot be located, but countless more exist.
-------------------------------------------------
Chaos reigns within. Reflect, repent, and reboot. Order shall return.
-------------------------------------------------
Program aborting: Close all that you have worked on. You ask far too much.
-------------------------------------------------
Windows NT crashed. I am the Blue Screen of Death. No one hears your screams.
-------------------------------------------------
Yesterday it worked. Today it is not working. Windows is like that.
-------------------------------------------------
Your file was so big. It might be very useful. But now it is gone.
-------------------------------------------------
Stay the patient course. Of little worth is your ire. The network is down.
-------------------------------------------------
A crash reduces your expensive computer to a simple stone.
-------------------------------------------------
Three things are certain: Death, taxes and lost data. Guess which has occurred.
-------------------------------------------------

I really wish I could see some of these error messages, I'd at least get a laugh while gnashing my teeth and groaning in despair, lol.

Sense of Freshness...

A new supermarket opened. It has an automatic water mister to keep the produce fresh. Just before it goes on, you hear the sound of distant thunder and the smell of fresh rain. When you pass the milk cases, you hear cows mooing and you experience the scent of fresh mown hay. In the meat department there is the aroma of charcoal grilled steaks with onions. When you approach the egg case, you hear hens cluck and cackle, and the air is filled with the pleasing aroma of bacon and eggs frying. The bread department features the tantalizing smell of fresh baked bread and cookies.

I don't buy toilet paper there any more.

Many of you have seen it - it's one of those, "you should see it before you die" things. However, especially for our non-American friends, I'm going to post a link to the famous Tim Conway elephant story outtake from the Carol Burnett Show. This is the whole one, too, often only the second part is shown. A little background. The show was edited together from two rehearsals. Anything flubbed in both rehearsals made in on to the final tape. Two rehearsals also helped if the show was going way over time in the first one, stuff could be cut out of the second.

And Conway was notorius for adding ad-libs and physical bits that the others weren't prepared for to try and get them to crack up. He was particularly good at doing it to Harvey Korman. This is during a "The Family" sketch with Carol, Vicki, and Dick Van Dyke playing something like Trivial Pursuit. Tim, playing dim-witted Micky, launches into a couple of preposterous stories after one of the questions is about elephants. Even Tim starts cracking about how he's tearing up the other three. But Vicki Lawrence turns the tables and gets the last word, which is why it's an outtake.

I'm SURE that a Master listing of Freeware / Open-Source applications would be a terrific time-saver for many computer users, if it were possible to compile. Here's my addition (which I THINK hasn't been mentioned yet). http://www.cnet.com has an annual survey for selecting the best Web 2.0 Internet applications. The survey relies on votes sent it by users worldwide. The 2009 results are posted here.
------------
Finalists:

Hope this hasn't been posted here before...too cute not to share....

"DADDY! HOW WAS I BORN?" Junior asks his dad,
His dad, who is a software engineer sighs and replies,
"Ah, my son, I guess one day you would have to find out anyway!"
"Well, your Mom and I first got together in a chat room on YAHOO.
Then I set up a date via e-mail with your mom and we met at a cyber-cafe.
We sneaked into a secluded room, where your mother agreed to a download from my hard drive.
As soon as I was ready to upload, we discovered that neither one of us had used a firewall, but it was too late to hit the delete button."
"Six weeks later your mom sent me an instant message saying that her operating system was showing signs of unauthorized program activity from a self extracting file which had implanted itself in her BIOS.
Then nine months later a little Pop-Up appeared and said:

'You've Got Male'!

Personally I like screensavers, good screensavers anyway.
I like to turn them on to watch when I feel like chilling out and have never set one up to start when my PC is idle (As if THAT happens)
BUT.
I won't download them from Gaotd because all of the screensavers I have tried on here so far have been full of junk.

The point I'm making is, screensaver = Nice.
Stupid program installed to organise? time? run? waste space? = Waste of resources and space.

Now if after activating all that was left was a .scr file and nice happy pictures I'd take every one of them.

Does any other screensaver hater have this problem or am I alone here?

While I personally do not download the screen savers, I can see that they do bring a measure of happiness to some peoples lives. Who am I to deny someone a little happiness. I am grateful for all the hard work that the team puts into this site. About once every two or three weeks I find a program that I find interesting and download it. Those are the programs that bring me happiness. While the team at GOTD cannot make everyone happy all the time, they do a pretty good job of making as many people happy as possible. Oh, and Spiritwolf, I used to use one from SETI to help crunch numbers looking for a signal from outer space. I lost it in a reformat a couple of years ago and just never reinstalled it.

I'm sure almost all users who run screensavers do so for aesthetic and entertainment reasons and not to save electricity, to cool their room, to prevent possible damage to their display.

I think the intention of screensavers ceased to be "technically useful" ever since Berkeley Systems launched "After Dark" and the Flying Toasters on the Mac back in 1989. Since then any "technical usefulness" is surely an accident that nobody really cares about.

In an interview with Patrick Beard, one of the architects who worked on "After Dark", Patrick says,

With the advent of LCD displays, screen savers are now purely eye candy.

It is interesting to read all of The After Dark Interviews - for some insight into the development of the first screensavers (as we now think of them).

Oh.. and have a Flying Toaster Screensaver ;)

I think I've been misunderstood, though I'm hardly the first to make this point. I have no problem with either using a screensaver of turning the monitor off. I'm just saying there's a certain logical elegance to using power management to make your monitor go dark if you're aware from your machine for too long. It's as good a protection from burn-in than either of the other methods. I'm not pushing it. I'm just saying that with power management or the option of hitting the power switch, screensavers have become a purely aesthetic choice. Which is fine. I've got no problem with your computer having something attractive running which makes you feel better. Actually, sounds like as useful a purpose for a computer as any. It's just that screensavers no longer serve a "technically" useful purpose.

Personally, I find the posting of Screensavers don't save screens and save the planet - turn your screen off, to be repetitive and tiresome.

When a paint program gets offered I don't see people arguing on the merits of graphic programs over using a real paint brush.

People are asked to comment on the giveaway software. Many of the users who comment have not even downloaded or looked at the software. Many comments are along the lines of "I don't like screensavers and I never use them - and neither should you. GOTD should never give away this type of software, it should be banned." (usually rants like this are of no help to anyone and I will delete them).

I believe everyone is entitled to make up their own mind and comments can only speak on behalf of the person posting them (ie. don't speak as "the elected representative of all the other users").

As for screen burn in - if anything is going to cause burn in - it is the negative image of the start button on the task bar - which is usually displayed 100% of the time - I have seen this - also on a Business PC - and was only visible by turning off the LCD monitor and looking very closely in direct sunlight. The user was completely unaware of it until having it pointed out to them.

Upon further research I have probably seen what they call “LCD Image Persistence”, according to this at least: http://compreviews.about.com/od/monitors/a/LCDBurnIn.htm
I might add that this was seen on a business PC with a regular standard LCD 17’’ flat panel screen that is on almost 24/7. So the likelihood of this occurring on a home computer is very unlikely to happen.
Probably have been a bit off topic here, but thought it necessary to clear up any confusion I may have caused.
This in my opinion is good reason to use a screensaver of some sorts, or at least turning off the monitor when not needed. So GOTD keep em commin', you rock!

pbbbbbear,
I would have thought no, too, from what I've heard, but if you've seen it, then I'm inclined to believe you. Plasma's might be prone too it, but I assume you were talking about an LCD monitor, not a plasma TV. The thing is, though, screensavers get such a bad wrap partly because there's a much simpler solution even if burn-in is the potential problem. Just using your power management and having your monitor go into standby, and therefore dark, saves power and internal mileage on both your monitor and your computer. Screensavers are from back in the days when power management was either unavailable or crude and glitchy. Sometimes it took more than a few seconds for monitors and/or machines to come back out of standby. It's pretty quick now. I saw one argument in the comments section from a very smart technician who said he used screensavers to improve his productivity because the desktop came up immediately, instead of having to wait a few seconds. Really? Those few extra seconds hurt your productivity to the point where it made a significant difference in your wallot? It wasn't coffee breaks, cigarette breaks, shooting the breeze, or whatever? Besides, I don't want to become THAT much of a workerbot. If it were me, I'd contemplate a new career.

The point is: there may be valid personal aesthetic reasons to use a screensaver, but in 999 cases out of 1,000 (really, not even that many), there's no valid technical reason. Especially not for a home user. But, for personal enjoyment - sounds good to me. Forgive me, however, if I don't partake.

Huh, my post was deleted. Now I can see why there aren't any other sides to this discussion, seems to me screensaver fans rule this place. Then I won't bother, but it's still plain rude to just delete (report) my post, even though I didn't really break any of the rules. I'm disappointed in this place.
