Hi kilgor 1. Try cleaning out your temporary folders and internet cache (right click on your internet browser and select internet properties. You can delete everthing from that window.

I cannot figure why you are getting the error. I your computer up to date with respect to drivers. Have you defragmented your drive recewntly, and have you done a disc clean up recently? If the answe rto any of these is no, then I'd try rectifying those then try again.

Also see if you can run the second racing game. There's no AI, so no cars to race against. but you can still play the game doing time trials. Though the purpose of the download would be to see if it runs or comes up with the same error as Driving Speed. I hope this helps.

Regards

Whiterabbit,
I'm glad you're doing this but I have a problem with some of your games.
Island Wars: there is no way to control the gamers biplane. I was only able to find instructions for getting out of the game.

Driving Speed: Error - Unable to execute file in the temporary directory. Setup aborted. Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified.

I downloaded this from both of the strings you posted and got the same error on both.

If you or anyone else have information on how to fix this, please advise here.

Thank you,
kilgor 1

Okay; personally I don't regard such games as single player (though I suppose technically they are) I'd soon get bored of just trying to beat my times if there wasn't other cars to race with. But that's just a personal thing.

It's a race against the clock,single tracks getting more difficult as you progress.Reach a good speed and get access to next level. Another game which does have an arcade mode (6 car races)is
"Rally Trophy" by JoWood studios,not free but an be found cheaply online.Both these games kept me amused for hours when I had to stop working.I usually just trawl the gaming sites looking for playable demo's,and pick up any of the games I enjoy as cheap as I can.

Hi Delenn13, yes, there's a proper singleplayer mode where you race against other cars.

Hi Deserthead, when you say theres a single player campaign. Do you mean that you can race against other cars without having to go multiplayer? I know that you can build tracks and race on your own, but I didn't know there as an AI built in so that you can race against other cars in singleplayer? I'll have to re-install it and check, but I'm sure I throughly checked the first time I installed it.

OK Like usual I am lost...the meds make me crazy.

So...is the Driving Speed game a single player also? I need to know because our ISP has a bandwidth cap so playing on the internet or over a LAN etc is out of the question. The hubby loves these sort of games. I am just not sure about the terminology sometimes as to what things are..LOL

WR, thank you for making these threads. If you have to miss a day or 2 do not feel bad as you have given us a lot of games as it is. I haven't downloaded a lot of them but I have them in my BM's(giggle, giggle). I am learning so much about games thanks to you. And as far as you harvesting emails addys..the thought never crossed my mind.

Thanks for the feed back, it's much appreciated. I know the game is limited with respect to having only 2 race tracks, but when you compare the game to the one that was given away a couple of weeks ago over on the game giveaway project - called Race of the Lost Roads" - Driving Speed is far better, and more realistic that the game giveaway (at least in my opinion). It's rare to find such a game for free. Of course you could try Trackmania Nations, but I'm sure there's no single player element to it. Well there isn't with the copy I got free with one of my graphics cards; though the bought versions of Trackmania may have a single player element.

Apart from those games such as the Need for Speed series and others of that ilk, this game has actually got very good graphics. The cars are modeled very realistically, though there are no damage meshes included. If you like seeing your cars get smashed up when they crash (adds more realism in my opinion) then try Crashdays and Flatout Ultimate Carnage. I bought both from the bargain bins of the game shop I buy from, and am amazed at how realistic the environments are that you race through. I'm certain the original flat out and it's sequel Flatout 2 are also available for around $10 now. Check out the images of ultimate carnage and crash days:

Other games I would recommend are Colin McRae’s rally game called “Dirt” It has some amazing environments, which though not as destructible as the ones in Flatout; are nevertheless, very realistic. I’ve only touched the surface of car and racing games. after recently getting back into them (thanks to a good friend who gave me the registration for the online game 'live for speed') so cannot review most of them. (I have the ones already mentioned plus, the last two need for speed games, Carbon and “Pro Street” Live for Speed, Race 07, GTR2, plus some older ones such as Midtown Madness 1 and 2, which despite being several years old now, have a great feeling about them. You can wander around places like San Francisco and London, avoiding police after running red lights etc, just sight seeing, or partaking in races of different types. You can even go underground in places like the London map. you just have to find one of the underground stations first. I also like to play the Big’ Mutha’ Truckers games, (1 & 2) I’ve not got the 16 Wheels of Steel games yet, but intend to when the opportunity arises. :) There’s a couple that have recently been released that I’ve forgotten the names of I think it’s something like Grid, which I think I’ll buy as well.

If anyone has a favorite car racing game that I’ve not mentioned above, I’d love to hear about them here in this thread. I’m always on the look out for decent racing games. I have some Motocross and bike racing games, but nothing recent. I’ve just given away the most recent one I had called Motoracer 3. :)

I’ve only had a few takers with respect to the racing games I offered free a couple of weeks ago. I’ll repeat the ones I still have to give away:

Doomsday Racers (2006)
Taxi Racer London 2 (2000)
Colin McRae Rally  (1998)
Screamer 4x4 (2000)
Super Taxi Driver (?)
Motocross Mania (2000)
London Racer (?)

And one for the young ‘uns one called Big Action Garage (4 to 7 year olds)

All the above are the original CD/DVD versions of the game. There’s no obligation whatsoever if you decide you want one then let me know. Get in touch with the admin’s via your PM; so that you can Email me your address and I’ll send the game onto you at no cost to yourself. I may not send the actual case though so as to save on the postage costs, but I will send the case sleeve and the original disc. b.t.w. - I’m not a business looking to harvest peoples addresses, lol.

Whiterabbit-ul
just a quick note to thank you for all you have been doing lately. I appreciate the games that you have posted and the reviews that you write to let us know about the games.
I have checked out a few of them and really enjoy them when I have the time to play them. What I really appreciate is the variety of games that you have found, personally I am waiting to see what match 3 game that you may find. My better half really likes them as do I. Well I have wasted enough of your time;so again thanks for all that you do for the rest of us.I don't usually post on the forums too much,afraid of looking dumb I guess.But I just have to say thanks.

Driving Speed:  (122Mb)

Sorry for the slightly late posting. I’m working on another large post detailing all (or many of) the online games that you can play for free. There are a lot more than I realized, so it’s taking a lot longer to write up. (Watch this space, lol)

Today’s game is a racing game. It’s quite a large download, at 122Mb, but the quality of the graphics make up for most of the file size. It’s certainly much better than the racing game we were given a few weeks ago via the game giveaway project, and the benefits of this game is it’s free all the time; also you can play against your friends if you wish via a LAN or online. The only down side to the game is that there are only two race tracks at the moment, but there is the possibility that future updates will include new tracks. The two that you get are circuits through towns as opposed to race tracks. As you start the game up you can see a map of each map, which includes quite a lot of information and detail. The following is the introduction to the game:

Driving Speed 2 is a free high quality racing game simulation for your PC. Choose from four high powered V8 muscle cars and race against up to 11 computer controlled opponents on two touring car circuits. This game has photo-realistic graphics, realistic car physics and performance, high quality sound and AI. Play against your friends over a LAN or internet with 8 player Multiplayer. Send your fastest lap records to the online world rankings where you can see your times against players from all around the world.

System Requirements
* Windows 98/ME/2000/XP/Vista
* 1GHz CPU or higher
* 256MB RAM
* 228MB Hard Drive Space
* Graphics Card with Pixel Shader Support
* DirectX 9 Drivers

Please note well: When installing this game you will be asked if you wish a free crawler tool bar installed. I would advice that you uncheck this box before proceeding further. I cannot take responsibility for you not un-checking the box, nor reading all instructions

.

CNET Review:

Driving Speed 2 also includes an optional Crawler search engine toolbar enhancement for your Internet Explorer and Firefox browser. New version includes enhanced graphics engine and improved support for Xbox 360 controllers.

There's also another driving game that i think is multiplayer only, but as it's only just over 100Mb in size, it may be woth checking out. Thse games sometimes have a singleplayer option. The game is actually sponsored by Mercedes

Suggestion for software giveaway:

Can we have some more programs from Wondershare? I'm thinking of particularly the Quiz Creator program they have. I've tried out the trial program and it's very good.

Cleanse Uninstaller was very good, thanks tons!

At the moment there are already two such threads that are "sticky'ed" in the "General Discussion" section of these forums.

If you go HERE (The General Discussion Section) and look at the first few threads listed at the top of the page, you will see one freeware thread for applications, and one freeware thread for games.

As some of the suggestions were copied from other forums - and the freeware status of other program suggestions might change over time - please make a comment (or send me a PM) and I will check the programs / links again and update the list if it requires changing.

I may also edit people posts if they become "chatty" and not strictly on subject. Remember these threads are a reference for many of us, the "thank you's" and "does anyone know a program" type of questions can be asked elsewhere. (I'm just saying so people don't get offended if some posts are trimmed or removed from these threads).

I hope this discussion does not degenerate into lists of links. As Bubby said: "Taking it one step further - rather than just listing the program titles and a download link, getting people to actually explain WHY they think it is so good compared to other apps." And don't forget to include the software's name, as also noted. Better still - don't do it here. Can someone get such a thread/forum started?

I like this idea A LOT. I have found some gems by reading the comments on some GAOTD offerings and checking out links to alternate software mentioned. Many of your commenters are knowledgeable and generous with their finds. I had decided just yesterday that it would be worthwhile to go back over the comments for software offered before I found GAOTD, for this very reason - and I will, when I find the time!

I hope you can get this started and organized as suggested. I would visit often and try to contribute.

Part of the problem with the freeware section is that it's not easy for freeware authors to get their software on it. You submit the info for your PAD file and then it's never added to the database.

Fix that and you'll have more freeware to offer.

I have a great little time management/productivity/anti-procrastination/RSI prevention tool that I have been trying to get added since you started that freeware section. I have had no success so far.

Maybe I should try to submit a screensaver instead?

I like the format used at Betanews.

http://fileforum.betanews.com/

The products are grouped into categories - but each program has it's own page with people posting feedback/discussion (and religious wars) underneath. In fact a freeware only version of fileforum but with a "related products" (other programs like this) list would be brilliant.

Thanks for the replies and support, guys.

I agree with your suggestions. Categorized, with description, brief critique (pros + cons) and a user rating system is what I had in mind. If GAOTD take up the general idea, I hope they will get back to us and discuss setup suggestions/options.

Basic concept would be to submit links to software/sites we have some experience with, and know to be reputable. Build the forum on community help and trust (Don't want the less savvy loading their machines up with evil bots).

Do you think it would be a good idea to keep the link threads free from general chat, making them easier to navigate? We could have separate help and chat sections if need be - Or is there a better way?

Anyhow, keep the thoughts coming while admin think it over.

Cheers.

"Members freeware discoveries" - sounds like a great idea. Some might even become the new quality benchmark for screensavers and arkanoid games. ;P

Taking it one step further - rather than just listing the program titles and a download link, getting people to actually explain WHY they think it is so good compared to other apps.

That way people can decide on which program best suits their needs based on the experience of people who have used it and in consideration of the programs strengths and weaknesses.

I find knowing what a program does particularly well helps me match it with my requirements - my favorite might be different to everyone elses, if the most important thing is printing support and other people might want support for the ability to run from a USB key.

A pro's and con's list with a description for each program helps in the selection of the right program for the individuals needs.

What sort of support can we get from GOTD for this?

I TOTALLY agree, -Good Idea!
I also think w/in that category they should setup separate threads for different types of SW like 1]'Creative apps.'for art/photo, 2] Utilities for Windows,..etc;...

I have foud some Excellent 'Free' SW through suggestions from others on this site
but ur right they have been spread out.-It would be great to have them all in one place,
otherwise u might never know of them.
--------------------------------------------

***I also think GAOTD should have their own Forum Tread -[that is Closed to members]-
where GAOTD can post news/info/responses directly to their members.***
