ahmeyt05, you're likely aware that normally when you run in safe mode, there's a LOT less Windows and other extra stuff loaded and running in the background to consume memory. That would fit in with Whabbit's theory that it's a shortage of RAM. Archibald's self contained, so it doesn't require much in the way of Windows running for it to do it's thing. Such standalones are the most likely to run properly in Safe.

It might work with your overheating theory, too. The extra heat naturally generated by your CPU, just from having more to do in normal, might be aggravating your failing video card. The potentially much lower load in safe can, obviously, put significantly less strain on your CPU.

Somebody might know a way to modify Pirates to play in safe, but I wouldn't think so. In Safe, a program either has what it needs already loaded in Windows or it doesn't. Running in Safe it's just a bandaid, anyway. Sooner of later, you're gonna want to upgrade or replace what's necessary. Good luck.

Also, I wanted to know why it worked with safe mode. Because I was nearly sure that my problem was caused because of overheating at my video card. I got a Pirates of the Carribean Pinball game with which I'm having the odd graphics problem. It doesn't have safe mode shortcut. Is it possible to make it run with safe mode through editing properties menu? Maybe adding something like "-safemode" to the end of the line at the target box? Or is it not possible?

I got my hands on Archibald's Adventure v.1.03. The giveaway was 1.02. I ran it with safe mode. It worked well but didn't with the normal mode as it was the case with the giveaway. Did the 1.02 have a safe mode shortcut on Startup Folders?

I agree with HOSS; someone else mentioned having the same problem in the comments section on Sunday and they too only had 512Mb.

If you have lots of background programs running I would use MSConfig, or one of the many start menu managers we've been given over the last few years. In fact I think Tuesdays giveaway can manage the start up programs.

I was just playing some Duck Doom. What a wild game and fun too!

It is likely your RAM. The game needs 256mb to play and Windows XP needs at least that much or more to run at the same time, not to mention any thing you else you may have running in the background. Your 512mb may not be enough to run it all. You can try turning off any unneccessary programs to free up some RAM. I recently went to 1gb of RAM because of the same kinds of problems.

Tag ran V.SLOWLY for me, maybe 10 fps, I ended up opening the .ini file, and changing BOTH resolution settings to 640 x 480, and windowed to 1 (on), before it ran respectably.

Other than that, it's a good game.

I've posted two games today, the first one is an excellent 3D puzzle game that will hopefully give you a few hours of pleasure and the second one is basically a duck shoot. A retro style shooting gallery type of game only you only get to shoot ducks with the weapons you find in Doom. The game is rather simple, but is an ideal strss buster, lol.

Tag the Power of Paint: (60Mb)

You can thank pavid for this game. I’d totally forgotten I had this one. Pavid found it independently of me and PM'ed me last week about it. When I first found this game I was hooked for quite some time, but decided to save it for a rainy day. That was quite a few months ago now, so it’s high time it was posted as part of this project. Tag: The Power of Paint is a Student Showcase winner in the 2009 Independent Games Festival. I beleive it will be added to at some point in the future?

It's not often that a game with the sort of clever manipulation of the environment like Portal comes along. For those keen on their history, though, there is Narbacular Drop, which was created by the Portal team while attending Digipen and shares the same sort of gameplay. This article is not about Narbacular Drop (although a future one might be!), but rather Tag: The Power of Paint, a game that brings to mind all the excellent gameplay innovations that Narbacular Drop displayed. It is one-of-a-kind, and here's hoping that a company like Valve takes notice, especially after it was one of the IGF Student Showcase finalists.

First things are first: graphics and sound. Everything is rendered in stark cel-shaded colors, making it easy to distinguish elements of the environment. You won't strain your eyes here. Unfortunately, it seems that even on a high-end computer that there can be some lag, sending your paint off mark when shooting a continuous stream. As for sound, it's all very utilitarian, with noises such as boings and dings as well as a gentle soundtrack. Very minimalist, but it fits.

The gameplay of Tag revolves around the use of three different kinds of colors and how they can interact with each other. There is nominally a fourth color, white, which erases the other three colors, but for all intents it is an eraser in the shape of paint.

• Green is the color of bouncing and jumping. You can't jump in Tag, so you must rely on smart application of green paint to surfaces to bounce around to higher ground. You can do all sorts of neat things such as wall-jumping (applying the paint to two walls and bouncing up between them) or diagonal leaping (applying to a diagonal surface, touching it to launch you diagonally).

• Red is the color of speedy speedy zoom zoom kabang. In truest of traditions, red makes you go faster as long as you are touching it. You can be against a wall that is red or walking on red paint, but you have to be touching it somehow. You can do neat tricks like applying red to a ramp and then running at it, launching yourself across a gap without green paint.

• Blue is the color of sticking to things. This power of sticking is regardless of orientation, allowing you to walk on ceilings and walls with impunity. Just be aware that when going over an edge you will actually jump a little upon leaving the blue paint. You retain your momentum when the paint effect wears off, which causes this effect.

The paints can all be used in conjunction with each other, but not overlapping. For example, you can put a little bit of green paint down, then make a red line to the green paint, causing a large, gap-spanning jump. Another useful example is putting down blue paint next to a wall, putting red paint on the wall, and dashing forwards. It's unfortunate that the paint can't be mixed to provide combined effects, but it is a showcase of concepts, not a full game.

Tag is easily one of the most interesting games to come out of Digipen in a while. A cool concept, crisp graphics, and smart level design make it worth the hour it takes to play. The only downside? There's no level editor! What a shame. You can download the game from the official Digipen site. Enjoy your painting!

Duck Doom Deluxe is the overhaul upgrade to the surprisingly popular mega-mix Duck Doom, released in November 2004. Really, it's a stupid game, one that's sure to get old fast. But if this is your first time playing, more than likely, Duck Doom will be the most satisfying and unwittingly humourous retro gaming throwback you'll download this week. lol

CONTROLS:

Duck Doom Deluxe is controlled via the mouse and several keyboard keys.

Click the options on the main menu to start the game.

Use the mouse to aim at your targets and click the left button to fire.

Press the numbers 1 through 7 to change weapons, or click the number in the "Arms" display.

Press Esc. to pause the game, then press Y to exit, or N or Esc. again to unpause.

To quit the game, press Esc. at the title screen.

WEAPONS:

There are 7 weapons in Duck Doom Deluxe.
You start the game with the first 2, and earn a new weapon every 2-3 rounds,
depending on the difficulty level.

1 - The Fist
Use this when you run out of ammo, or you feel like showing those ducks your spite.
Note: you can't actually hit ducks with your fist.

2 - The Pistol
This trusty handgun will get the job done, at least on slower-moving ducks.

3 - The Shotgun
A favourite among Duck Doomers, the widespread shot will take 'em down, and make you feel good doing it. You can even shoot two ducks at once, if you're real lucky!

4 - The Super Shotgun
A double-barreled Shotgun. It's loud, and has a much wider spread shot, but takes longer to reload, and uses two shells at a time.

5 - The Chaingun
No duck can escape the down-piercing, feather-ruffling Chaingun. Just be sure to release the trigger and conserve your ammo.

6 - The Rocket Launcher
For when you want real satisfaction. Take aim and blow up those ducks beyond all recognition. Remember, rockets are slower than bullets, so aim in front of your target.

7 - The BFG-9000
The Big Fraggin' Gun is back and it knows no mercy. One shot will turn every duck in sight into Canard aux Entrailles. That's right, hits all ducks, never misses. But, you only get one shot per round.

I installed Archibald's Adventures. I got so weird game display, I don't know how to describe it. It's that bad. I can hear the sounds and play the game but graphics are really odd with odd colours and odd texture. Is there a way that I can show a screenshot of it? Also I reinstalled it. There was no uninstall option neither I could find it under Add/Remove Programs. So, I deleted from C:\ and reinstalled it to no avail. I saw several libraries stated in readme file of the game, is it possible that I'm missing necessary ones?
