Oh, duh, I also wanted to ask how one applies the cheat codes. I keep reading that you do it at the start-up screen, but I've tried it several times at each screen before the game actually begins. Am I supposed to hold down CTRL or something as I type?

Thanks. This is a great forum. The hack to increase lives was helpful.

I'm playing the game on Windows XP and, for some reason, it keeps taking me back to Day 43 whenever I exit. It keeps telling me that it's saving the game. I'd gotten up to Day 55 or something the first time it reset to 43. Then I worked up to 50, and it happened again.

Weird thing is, it doesn't happen every time. I'd shut down and restarted the game several times between 43 and the higher days. But then, bam, it goes back to 43 at some point.

Anyone having a similar issue?

"I pulled up my Atlantis Quest, and yes, the 'w' does work"

Copmom, is that from GOTD, and from when...the first time given away? I lost that one in a reformat. I might have accidentally screwed up the one just recently given, as I was trying to transfer my files from mostfun...all the tools/bonuses I've accumulated. I probably deleted the wrong thing, and now my 'w' trick doesn't work...*sigh*. Well...I still have the double-ad mostfun one I can have fun with...and use the 'w' trick on, on 8-12...(chuckle).

"Ta daaaaaa! I finally conquered it!!"

Level 80 of Around the World in 80 days, Copmom? (Evil chuckle)...wait until you get on level 81...(evil chuckle, again). LOL

Delilah, it's just a level/stage in the Atlantis Quest game. I was seeing Atlantis Quest 1 and 2, and was wondering when 2 had come out. After checking on the 'net, I realized what it is, which is what I told you.

Sue, it sounds like you've got it handled. If it ain't broke, etc...

If you do decide to edit .map files on the GOTD version, you may need to start your game over at the beginning. But I'm guessing you don't have a lot of bonuses and such to lose on that one. BTW, the time is calibrated in units, theoretically 200 units = 1 minute. But I suspect there may be another parameter affecting the time, because in the .map files for Greece, the time parameter keeps decreasing as you go up the levels, and that's not how I remember the game playing. And I'm sure my actual times (as reported by the game at the end of each level) were more than the values in the .map files would indicate. And that's without using any time bonuses, of course. But, like I said, this game is diabolical!

Copmom, what's "Atlantis Quest 1"?

Delilah, I tried the 'w' on the GOTD one, too, and it didn't work. I believe we got that game before, from here, and it worked then.

Graylox, I Googled for AQ cheats; found one....just one, and it was the same .MAP files one Delilah mentioned, that (I'm supposing) gives you more time per level altered. That would come in reallll handy for level 8-12, considering how difficult it is, and the 'w' cheat doesn't work...on the GOTD version, anyway. I'm pretty tempted to just keep on playing the mostfun one; got a lot of accumulated tools/bonuses, and that 'w' cheat for level 8-12...heh heh.

I have the GOTD version of Atlantis Quest, and the W cheat still doesn't work for me. A few variations, tho: tweaking files in this game does seem to have some unintended consequences, like I've never experienced in any other game, and I did have to edit the Options.txt file to change the screen settings to get it to even run (that was suggested in post #66 this most recent time the game was given away).

One unintended consequence: lowering the number of points it takes to get another life (CONST_BonusLifeScore in Options.txt is set at 35000, and I changed it to 25000) when I was halfway through the game actually LOWERED the number of lives I had! And no, the game wasn't running when I made the change. But then I created a new user (doesn't look like you can do it, but you can), and started over, and I'm getting new lives every 25,000 points like I should.

As far as time goes, I know how to edit all those individual *.map files in the Levels folder, but it just seems too much like work. I mean, there's probably about 100 of them. But if I do change them, I'll definitely back up the whole directory first. I'm not usually that careful, but this game is diabolical!

Thanks everyone, for your sharing.

James and Delilah, if you got your Atlantis Quest game from MyPlayCity, the 'w' cheat won't work. I settled for it through mostfun.com, with its double ad-ding practice, over MPC for that reason. Imagine my delight to see it as a giveaway, again...(grin).

Delilah, the 'w' cheat works with any level, and doesn't need to be CAP'd. Just hit that button...after you've given the level a good try or two...or three, and gotten the bonus tool(s)...and you've won the level. ;)

I couldn't get the "w" key to do anything for me either.

"Atlantis Quest" is so frustrating I decided I had to find a way to cheat just so I could keep playing it.

On my computer, it stores game information in "Game.dat" in the "PlayerData" folder (within the installed folder). It's a binary file instead of a text file. So, instead of trying to figure out how to edit the file, I just decided to make a copy of it and save it somewhere else.

Then, whenever you lose a life, you can exit the game and replace the Game.dat file with the older one. Thus, you can keep replaying the level this way until you finally beat it without giving up a life. In fact, you could save this file under a new name after every level so you could go back to any level later if you wanted to.

Okay, Sue, what is the W/L cheat? Atlantis Quest only? Hitting the W key makes you win a level, regardless of your actual status? I tried it on a lower level, and couldn't get it to work (I'm somewhere in Rome/Italy now, which is farther than I've ever gotten before). Or does it have to be a shift-W? And does it matter where in the level do you do it?

Yeah, I haven't found any files to tweak in Atlantis Quest, either. Darn.

Copmom, I have played Atlantis Quest through, I don't know how many times, but only finished it, 'legitimately', two times. All other times, on that last level, I hit the 'w' button, and 'win' the game; after getting all the bonuses, and giving the game my best shot, that is. (grin)

James, I couldn't figure out any files tweaking in Atlantis Quest, as with other games, i.e. Around the World in 80 Days. I really had trouble with AQ, especially on the very last level, but lucked up one day when someone posted the W/L cheat. I used it once on some hard-to-beat level during the game, but after that, just on the very last level, as I told Copmom.

I know the answer to this one because I just recently had to do it myself!

It's in a file called "GameInfo.xml". On my XP machine, it's located in...

Documents and Settings\(either "All Users" or your user name)\Application Data\Playrix Entertainment\Around the World.

You can edit it with Notepad. Change ...lives="?" ...to your choice and save. (Make a backup first, just in case something goes wrong.)

I wanted to make sure i could still play games that wouldn't work on win 7, (which is where the XP image comes in) but as yet only a few of the thousads that I have wont work. If you're not bothered about the XP image and your not into the little extras Win 7 Home Basic is fine. I like the extas to much though so am willing to part with more cash.

WR,

Which version of Win 7 did you go with? Seems like Home Premium is fine for most gamers. I am getting ready to build a new machine and was planning to go with Home Premium. My current machine has XP Pro and I am considering putting Win 7 Pro on the new machine although I don't know if I really need any of the extra features. I guess it does boil down to whether you need the additional capabilities.

The fitings for MoBo's remains much the same, so you shouldn't have a problem fitting a new MoBo, though the swith mechanism for turning off the computer may be different. Now connections for the on off go directly to the motherboard, wheras they used to go directly to the power supply. It will be obvious if they are the latter.

Thanks for that info, WR. My computer's casing is still in great condition. No reason, that I know of/can thnk of why I can't upgrade it myself, really...:). Using the old computer to practice on; if I am going to crack/break something while installing it, I can't hurt the old one any more than it already is...(chuckle).

That's a good idea (using the old computer to practice), though do be aware that some of the MoBo sockets used back than for graphics cards and other add-on cards have changed, though the principle is the same. Power supplies are much easier to install now, with connections standardized. cpu sockets have also changed, but the principle is the same. fastening the heatsink onto the Mobo is the bit I always hate as i'm always scared i'm going to crack the Mobo as you need to apply quite a lot of pressure if you don't get the pivot points correctly when clipping it to the MoBo.

There are loads of online tutorials that show you pictorially what you need to do and you'll also find you tube videos:

The following is a good example. You'll see a whole load of them to the right of the page when you open up the link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8vZbW7ZNpE

It's definitely worth upgrading your computers yourself. The money saved could enable you to upgrade to even better specs. :)

Yeah, graylox, we did get a smidgeon OT. We were discussing the screensaver that you get with Around the World in 80 Days; not really OT, there....hee hee. The only real OT was my mentioning getting a new computer. *Now then*...let's see if I am getting this straight. YOu want me to ask my family to get not one new computer, but *two* of them...lol. Seriously, I know you are just kidding....you are just kidding, right...<BG> ? Oh, and btw, when I get my new computer, I'm going to get one of those TV sets you can use as a monitor, also. Make it do double duty...heh heh heh.

WR, I might just take a bit more time to get used to Win 7. It's mostly the documents area I'm having trouble with. I need one of those picture tutorial books Best Buy used to carry that made all that stuff so simple, as child's play. I got one way back when we got our first computer (with Win ME on it). That book was as much pictures as it was text, if not more, but I 'got it' with that book...lol.

Ahh...replacing those computer components. My son asked me what I was planning to do with my now-deceased Gateway computer that we bought way back in 2000, and just quit late last year. I told him I am going to do some 'playing with it', using it to learn how to remove/replace components, i.e. the ones we've mentioned, here. I figure if I do it that way, if one of our good computers needs something replaced, I can do it myself. Sheesh...I've never taken a computer/laptop to a shop to be fixed; did it myself...lol. I would have gotten a couple of them repaired much sooner/faster if I had, but didn't want to spend that money. Glad I held out, because it only cost me a few dollars to fix the laptop, and nothing but sheer luck and extra software I had on hand to fix my desktop (the one I'm typing this on).

Okay, still off topic, but in answer to RosnSC

After finally installing my copies of Win 7 I'd never go back to XP. I've so far found the new OS very stable. It's also improved the running of several high end games, for example I used to get a lot of lag in a game called Red Faction Guerrilla when a building was being destroyed (the game has amazing destruction physics)and a fire fight with several EDF (Earth Defence Force) soldiers was in process. The frame rate would literally drop to 1 or 2 frames per several seconds. I couldn't max out my graphics on games like Grand Theft Auto IV or Fallout 3 despite having a high end graphics card (well, now on the lower end of the high end cards {NVidia GTX275 with 865Mb RAM}), whereas since installing Win 7 I am able to do both and the first game no longer lags. (Oh yeah, I did add more RAM as well, but my RAM was already more than enough when I ran XP {that is it was well above the recommended requirements}) So far I've not had any BSOD's and no error messages. Everything is Hunky Dory. Win 7 is the best Windows build I've ever used since using windows back in the late 80's (IMO)

If you still want to run a copy of XP you can get a free virtual XP download from Microsoft if you have either Win 7 Pro or Win 7 Ultimate. Though you rarely get those versions on pre-loaded computers (from what I've seem when looking at off the shelf purchased computers) - they always seem to have Win 7 Home Basic or Win 7 Home Premium for some reason.

Honestly, replacing any of those components is easy, though changing your cpu can be a little tricky if the old cpu is stuck to the heat sink and you require the old heat sink for the new cpu. The heat sink compound that's used to create a good contact between the cpu and heat sink is hard to remove, but you can buy stuff to remve it easily (I think it's acetone/nail varnish remover or some other solvent). If you purchase a cpu with heat sink included, you wont have that problem unless your old heat sin is a better one. I usually never use the heat sinks that come with the cpu or purchase the black box editions so that i can choose my own heat sinks. Fans are the simplest to change. The power supply can be a little more trick, but only because you have to plug the power leads into all the components you have which if you aren't used to it can seem a little confusing. Thankfully there are only four or five specialized power couplers at the end of the leads such as the ones for the old IDE HDD's or the ones for the newer ATA HDD's, one for the Motherboard (MoBo) plus others for fans (though you usually have 2 or three fan sockets on the MoBo. There may also be ones for the graphics cards as most newer graphics cards need an external power supply other than the one thts taken directly from the PCI-E socket.

It's definitely worth doing tyourself or getting an experienced friend to do it rather than take it to a shop as then you may as well buy a new computer.

I wish I lived nearby as I could have done it for you. (Though you'd have had to bring the computer to me as I don't travel well). :)
