Hi Widow of Turkey,

Sorry to hear of all the troubles you've had to suffer. I live in a cosseted world where the worst weather comes nowhere near as vicious as what you get on a yearly basis.

Another place to go for great arcade games of the snowy type is http://gametop.com , there’s at least 40+ free full version games that are usually sold elsewhere. The only price you pay is having your browser opened when you shut the game down. That is easily remedied by shutting it down, with no malware or viri installed.

As Idahl and RosnSC say, both those sites mentioned by them have masses of free games of all genres and sizes. You're bound to find something you like.

Take care

Regards

Stephen

Widow, bless your heart. We got your leftover storms up here and they still had the power to kill the lights and flood my basement. I know everyone here was worried about all you folks down south. You've got a great attitude and it is a real pleasure to see you here and posting.
Go here for small, free games to try:
I can bet that you will find something to play and like. Let us know what you prefer to play and we'll help you look around. There are lots of free games, and the people here know where they are hiding out!:)))

Widow...you can get scads of free games, of all different types - match-3's, hidden objects, platform games i.e. Snowys..., and more - to play at mostfun.com. I don't know the size of the downloads but there are probably a bunch that are small enough for dial-up. Like I said though, they are free to play when, and for how long, you want to play them. There are brief ads you have to watch at various times during before, during, and after game play, upon shutting it down, but they don't interrupt while you're playing - they are shown between levels.

Would one of you guys start a thread for little old ladies? The ones with time to kill and very few coumputer skills but who still would like to play a few free games? I liked Snowy's lunch rush but lost it when computer went belly up. I don't have much money so have very few resources to purchase games. I enjoy reading your reviews WR...even if I don't understand half of the computer lingo....Most of the games mentioned lately are above my poor little machine's resources...too much graphics I guess plus the size if the downloads are above what I can get on dialup....
I live in southern Louisiana USA...we have had terrible storms last few years and I live so far back in the woods....Dial up has a hard time getting out sometimes...lol... Just spent four weeks with no electric....lol...Let alone computer Tv Etc...ALL WELL THO.....we are well except for bug bites and sweaty nights!!!COLD showers do help tho///.....lol....God bless to all that prayed for us...Hope rest of the world Feels as blessed
Please post a few small games for us old people who cannot keep up with all the arrows and bombs and cyber links you kids post........thanks for listening

That sounds like a cool idea lol. I used to love playing America’s Army and thought how cool it was that they were part of the project.

I've not got into Diablo or WoW, much preferring FPS games over those styles of game; though I do have some similar games such as Hard to be a God. (That’s the only one I can think of at the moment lol) I'm still massively into Oblivion at the moment to the exclusion of all my other games (apart from a couple of arcade game called Peggle Nights and 4 Elements - I used to use arcade games as a break from my online play and other larger games, but since the accident they have figured a lot more simply because they are easier to play). I'm just about to order Bethesda’s new title called Fallout 3, which looks amazing, and what I've read of the game play is a big improvement on Oblivion (though there's no comparing them really). In the meantime I'm waiting for the latest Brothers in Arms title Road to Hell that I originally ordered last December. It was scheduled for release last March and has been knocked back several times.

So much for those 4 games I listed not having ads. Stinking Airforce ads. you know annoying people isn't the way to get people to join. I can see placing them at front and even when you close, but at save points is a little to much. Still its for free, so I can't complain to much.
I think a better way for them to go about it, is to do what the army did and create their own game. Heck they could even merge it with America's Army somehow by adding air support for the troops. They could call it America's Airforce.lol

I wasn't sure about placement. The layout is kind of confusing. When I found the first 4,I put them games discussion and then I noticed this one. Now that I've rested, it does make more sense to put the games in the discussion than here and leave this for software.

Had terrible headache that I couldn't shake? We had a cold front blow in a couple of days ago and its just been killing me. Are you a human barometer to?

I know what you mean about the games, but then your not trying the newest and your playing old technology, not that their bad. This computer I built specifically for gaming and you you just can't push it with the old games.
If I was smart I would play the demos first before buying them. I bought the Devil May Cry4 a few months ago and then Warhammer Online.Warhammer is ok, but not impressive. Devil may cry isn't bad, but don't waste your money.
Lich king comes out next month and that keep ,me going till Diablo 3 comes out. That is what I'm what for. They are killing me not putting a possible release date. Then there's Stargate World which looks like a blast.
Ahhh, so many games so little time.

I can vouch for Full Spectrum warrior because I bought it a few years ago when it had been reduced to a budget title. It's still a good squad based shooter even though the graphics are a little dated now (though not seriously).

I would have posted this in the game sdiscussion thread though as that's where most of the games are posted. I think this section is meant to be for applications; though I suppose it doesn't really matter.

Quest for Glory, Refuel Rampage and Jello Cars were on my list of weekday games, though I'll still post them in a few months time. :)

Thanks for the others, I'll check them out sometime soon. (There's so many free games I don't know why I pay for them anymore, lol (though I suppose I pay for the graphics)

This is extension of my 4 games for free post. I think this is where rabbit was wanting us to put them.

Anyway here ya'll go and enjoy.

I'm not sure if the downloader is needed for these. If it is, then there will be adds. They state if you buy a premium account then the ads go away and download capacity increases to 30gigs a month. The 4 from the other post shouldn't need the downloader.

I don't know how long this will last, but gameshadow is giving away Area 51,
Full Spectrum Warrior, The Suffering, Rise & Fall.

Hey Rabbit was the suffering a full game or a partial that we were playing. This one is showing as 1.3g, so it maybe the same one. I'll probably end up downloading it again, so I can get rid of the ad that pops up from time to time.

Dialup users plan over night downloads they are all over a gig.

They are getting hammered right now, its showing anywhere from 8 hours to day for Area 51, so make some time people. I have the fastest DSL offered and I'm getting those times.

http://www.gameshadow.com/doublefusion/index.asp

I'm glad to hear that about Crysis. I won't trust a game stop rep anymore. I will take your word on a game. The putting it out for 30 instead of 50 was a brilliant move.

You know if the rest of the companies would follow suit and start charging 30 for new games, they would make up the difference in sales.

Crysis has to be one of the most beautiful games I've ever played. I've still not finished the first one yet, but that's becuase I started playing all the custom made maps that are available. I also admin on a gaming site that specializes in Battlefield 2 and Crysis. The head honcho, Hayabusa, creates maps that some of the community beta test.

However Despite it's beauty, I do think it has some shortcomings. The main one is after playing it for a couple of missions, it all becomes very same-ish. I've actually found the recently released Mercenaries 2 a much more pleasurable game to play. (It's like a cross between Battlefield 2 and Grand Theft Auto). I've posted a link to some screenshots on the forums somewhere - oh yeah - found it:

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/3826

Crysis Warhead, the second title is half the price that the original cost last year when it was released, which is a definite must have if you're computer is up to scratch with the specifications. I've checked it out on the lowest graphics settings and the higest (though not DX10 because I uninstalled my copy of vista), and although there is a marked difference. The lower settings still give you a gorgeous looking game. I have to turn the antialiasing down to about 2 if I want it on maximum settings though because wen theres a big firefight with explosions added, the game starts to lag, and my system though not the fastest by any means isn't slow (3.2GHz dual core, with an NVidia 8800 GTS 680Mb graphics card, 4GbRAM {though only 3.6Gb are utilized with XP} and a Sound Blaster X-Fi Fatality card). I usually shut down most of the background programs when playing games. I keep meaning to set up a particular configuration, so that when starting up the computer, all those background programs are already switched off; but have forgotten how to do it now. I have start up programs such as Anvir, but you can do it with XP I think.

Anyway, It's way past my bed time and I've still not sorted my Emails out, or the childrens school stuff. :(

I jealous about the Crysis game. I ended up getting the devil may cry4 from a gamestop guys word that is one of the funnest games he's played. I jumped the gun going up there to buy Crysis, so I still had like two days till it was due out. I should have waited.

I never played the first one, but I thought Halo2 was frkn sweet. The day I got it. I played it to the end. It's a rare game to that catches ya like that. I figured Crysis was the same style, so why not get it. I will next month, guarateed. Gotta ticket to pay next week, so there went spending on me.

And the mmorg outbreak you mention, I had no idea till I did that search. The ones I played I just ran across, but wow, there are so many. I don't see how they can keep in business. Don't they get money from the advertisements vs people coming to site(over simplied version). They all couldn't have thousands of people at the same, could they?

As for posting on the link, no problem. Be glad to help and put them in the proper location.

All those links would be really cool over on the online games thread called Online Multiplayer Games Bonanza:

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/3926

I've been working on that thread on and off for a few weeks (though since posting the first installment I've been playing more than reading and writing). The only reason I suggest posting them in that thread is so that all the online games will be easier to find rather than having them spread all over the forums.

I recognized a few, but most are totally new to me. There seems to be a burgeoning market for these massive online games. Although all are free, most also have elements that have to be paid. Of course those are optional; but buying them definitely improves the game for you and in some cases helps you win over those that just play the game without purchasing anything. Still, for free these games can be great. There was nothing like this several years ago apart from America's Army and a few others; now there are countless numbers. Whenever I sign onto my filefront account there always seems to be a new one being released, and I'm a regular visitor to fileplanet as I download lots of mods for many of the games I play.

The only purely online game I’ve ever purchased is ‘Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar, (2007) but I’ve not actually installed it despite having bought it several months ago. It’s one of those that you have to pay a small server fee every month. (Though you get a month free thrown in when you buy the game). I’ve been meaning to try it out as one of my online friends has been playing it since its release, but have not had the time since spending more time here at GOTD and other sites that I admin or moderate for. I’ve been a ‘Lord of the Rings’ addict since reading ‘The Hobbit’ as a child, which is why I decided to purchase the online only game. I used to read the three LOTR volumes every year when I was a teenager and into my twenties, and still read it every five years or so); and I sometimes play the Lord of the Rings strategy game called ‘The Battle for Middle Earth’ which was released about 2 years ago.

Too be honest, I’ve got far too many games for my own good. It can be really hard choosing a game sometimes, and I find myself flitting from one game to the next until I come across one that I’ve not played for a while, but (as with Oblivion, which I’m playing at the moment) I’ll then play one for several days or more before moving on. (though I intend to continue playing Oblivion and Frontline Fuel of War for some time as wellas another couple of games I bought a few weeks ago (Mercenaries 2 and Crysis Warhead)

To be honest, I think I may actually have a problem lol. It’s almost like I need to buy these games to be happy, which sounds really sad. :(

Anyway. I’ve been waffling on various threads here on these forums since the kids went to bed nearly four hours ago. The third series of Heroes has just started earlier this evening, which I recorded, so I think I’ll go and watch that now before I turn in.

I’ve just bagged myself some venison and a wolf fur while playing Oblivion earlier, now I need to rest my character because he got bitten badly by a wolf, who unbenown to me had been stalking the deer that I was shooting at with my bow. (I actually managed to kill one deer with an iron arrow at about 100 metres, lol…… maybe I’ll mix up some potions to restore my health. :)

Yes, I'll be spending alot of time on this thread. They got some sweet looking games. Some of those on the abandonia link reminded me of the old comodore 64 games. I'll have to check later and see if they carry Zork.
Rabbit- I don't how you find time to play all these. It takes enough time just to find them, much less test them.
Are all of those ones free play now like Heroes of might and magic and oblivion?

I found a new game coming out soon, its going to free, but it'll be new scifi mmorg?
If you can get into the beta its free right now though.

I'll be posting lots of games for the DOS box if this project carries on after Christmas. (I've tested enough games to last until the end of the year - and am adding the odd one when I feel the urge to search for more) I'm amazed that all those games that cost me a small fortune back then are now totally free. The first computer game I ever bought (not including the games that were bundled with the computer was a text based adventure called The Island of Artuan. It had no more than about 10 drawn images throughout the whole game, the rest was just blocks of text. It cost me the equivalent of $40, which in the early 80's was a lot of money.

DOSBox is a DOS-emulator that uses the SDL-library which makes DOSBox very easy to port to different platforms. DOSBox has already been ported to many different platforms, such as Windows, BeOS, Linux, MacOS X...

DOSBox also emulates CPU:286/386 realmode/protected mode, Directory FileSystem/XMS/EMS, Tandy/Hercules/CGA/EGA/VGA/VESA graphics, a SoundBlaster/Gravis Ultra Sound card for excellent sound compatibility with older games...

You can "re-live" the good old days with the help of DOSBox, it can run plenty of the old classics that don't run on your new computer!

DOSBox is totally free of charge and OpenSource.

Today’s game is actually three games in one; Realms of Arcania I, II and III, an RPG series that was released in the early to mid nineties. You can see the gradual improvement in graphics over the several years that these three titles were released, and the size of the games also reflects this. The first game Blade of Destinyis only 3.48Mb in size, the second title Star Trail was 18.4Mb and the third and final game in the series called Shadows over Riva weighed in at a whopping 445Mb. The first two games are relatively easily downloaded and installed, however the third is a little more complicated, but well worth the effort. The third title is divided into three downloads (199Mb, 199Mb and 47.4Mb respectively. The tricky part is actually downloading them; (the three files for the third in the series) because the download host is ‘rapid share’ which can be rather slow at downloading if you don’t have a subscription account; also you generally have to wait a specific amount of time in between downloads. Still it’s free. Pick the right time of day to down load and you can get them almost immediately. I’m not going to describe all the controls or how to play these games, as that would take far too long. I’m sure part of the fun is learning how to play these games. You may be able to find some walkthroughs on the net if you wish to try a decent search engine. If you decide to play the games chronologically, you can actually transfer the character you play in the first title to the second an then to the third game; though don’t ask me ho because I’m having difficulty getting the first game to run properly. The game loads, but I keep freezing on the character generation chart. Oh yea, I haven’t figured out how to exit from the first game either so have had to go into task manager to stop the game. Still, when something that’s reasonably decent has small problems like that, I’m sure the majority of us will be forgiving. :)

I did have some problems with the first two games, for example once the first title; Blade of Destiny was installed it froze quite a lot, and the second one comes with a legal crack, but I didn’t figure out how to set things up in the short space of time I’ve allocated to writing up and searching for this game. (It’s the replacement for Penumbra, the game I posted on Saturday), so you may have to settle just for the last in the title. You will have to make a note of where you decide to unzip each of the games so that you can then create shortcuts, though the third title, Shadows over Riva already installs a desk top icon.

=========================================================================

Realms of Arcania 1 – Blade of Destiny:

Realms of Arkania: Blade of Destiny is a computer role playing game developed by Attic Entertainment Software. It was the first game based on the German pen & paper RPG system Das Schwarze Auge by Fantasy Productions. The original German version of the game (German title: Das Schwarze Auge: Die Schicksalsklinge) was released in 1992. Due to its success it was translated to English and released by Sir-Tech in 1993.

Gameplay:

Realms of Arkania: Blade of Destiny is a classical 3d party computer role-playing game that has up to six characters (plus an optional NPC that may be recruited) moving through 3d towns and dungeons. Travels between those 3d levels were simulated by showing a path on a regional 2d map. The game generally uses the same pseudo-3d-engine as Attic's 1991 game Spirit of Adventure, utilizing an increased resolution for the 3d part of the screen. The game also borrowed ideas from Eye of the Beholder (the inventory user interface) and Might and Magic III: Isles of Terra (the main screen user interface layout). The game did not feature NPC/monster sprites in the 3d view (a shortcoming that can be found in the entire Northlandtrilogy) that were already introduced by the first 3d computer role-playing game - Dungeon Master - in 1987. Instead of visualizing fights in the 3d view, the game switched to the isometric perspective for a unique turn-based strategical combat simulation.

Story:

An Orc chief has united all tribes of the orcs and plans to attack the lands of the humans. The player is hired by Hetman Tronde Torbensson, the leader of the Thorwalians, to find the sword Grimring (the Blade of Destiny) and prevent an orc invasion on Thorwal. However, Grimring has been lost since the death of its bearer, the Hetman Hyggelik the Great. In order to recover the sword, the player must find pieces of a treasure map which shows the location of the sword. Once the sword is recovered the player needs to defeat the orc chief and his minions. If the player does not succeed within about two ingame years, the orcs will attack and the player loses.

reference from wikipaedia

The game combines all the best characteristics of most RPG’s, like an extensive story line, first person view mode, cave exploring, scenery and (of course) freedom over your own actions. This game was an immediate hit when it was first released, forcing the producers to make a new English version almost over night! (The game was originally intended only for Germany). This delayed the sequel to the game, Star Trail, for a whole year.

The game is incredibly huge for the time it was made. A lot of work was put into creating the world, including history, geography, folklore, races and NPC’s (non-player characters).

The story is epic, as all RPG’s… You play the role of six different people; all looking for adventure and fame that arrives in the city of Thorwal. After a while, you are sent to the real quest of the game: hunt for the sword of legendary warlord Hetman Hyggelik. In order to find it, you will have to travel the world in search for pieces of a map, drawn by one of Hyggelik’s warriors. This map, naturally, shows the location of the sword.

This game partially relies on its manual. You will need the manual if you want to make your own characters (recommended), as it holds the minimum requirements in the attribute values of each type of hero.

The battle sequences, which are in an isometric view, remind me of the battle scenes in Darklands and the Gauntlet, which are even earlier games than this one. (I used to play Darklands for upwards of 36 hours at a time at weekends and spend most of my evenings after work playing the game, my then girlfriend nearly left me because of it, lol).

Realms of Arkania 2 – Star Traill

After the failed orc invasion on Thorwal, the orcs attacked another region. The player is recruited by an elf to recover an old artifact, the Salamander Stone, which could unite the elves and the dwarfs in battle against the orcs...

Star Trail is the second game of the series, and voted by many fans as the best of them all.

You start the game in a temple in Kvirasim dedicated to the goddess Peraine. Here you create the 6 heroes you play in the game. You can either choose to let the computer make your characters, load the sample characters or create your own. There is a total of 12 different classes you may play. Each one with its own different style and magic ability. This bit of the game can be difficult for new players, who might want to let the computer take care of the birth of the heroes. (But it is recommended that you spend some time creating your folks. You will need to use almost all the skills in the game, so remember to make a squad with a wide array of skills).

When you are done in the temple, the game begins! Immediately you will come in contact with two persons, who will tell you their tale and send you out on a hunt to find an ancient artefact: The Salamander Stone. From this point it is up to you. The game is filled with mini-quest for you to complete, and a vast map to explore. So the chance for you to get bored with this game is minimal. There is always something new to discover, even for advanced players.

The music in the game is excellent, and improves the gameplay by a great deal. Also the graphics are great for the time. It’s not 3D, but in my humble opinion it’s the second best.

Star Trail is an extremely difficult game. If you do not listen to warnings from people you meet, or travel too deep into orc-infested territory… You will either die, get captured or find a point of no return. So save often ;o)

The game relies a great deal on its manual, and playing the game without it will greatly increase the difficulty… but it’s not impossible. For this reason I am going to make a basic translation of my original German manual with the most important facts. I have also made a copy of the map, as it is a great help for getting around the world. (But, again, this is not essential). (<I was unable to find the manual. Maybe a search on the net will turn it up. I’m keen to get back to my game in Oblivion after a spell in on the Frontlines in Fuel of War, so have been a little slack in supporting today’s games fully.

To finish it all off, let me just say that if you like RPG’s you should download this game right now. You will not regret it. This is a legendary game, and even by today’s standards a great game!

Important!:

The crack is included in the download.

To play the game, install it to a different folder, and then copy the Crack file into the new folder. After running the crack the game will work. (Though I had problems running it)

Please note:

The use of the word crack is used loosely; it implies something illegal, but, the game is officially abandonware, and the crack is just a file that allows the DOS game to be played fully in a windows environment.

Video:

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGIk5v4yuEk

=========================================================================

Realms of Arkania 3:Shadows over Riva:

This is a little trickier to download than the first two games, but it’s worth the effort. You have to download a CD image, which comes in three parts. The download mirror is rapid share so if you haven’t an account you may have to wait some time in between downloading the three parts. You can even download a cover for the game if you wish to transfer the game to disc.

Installing the third game:

Once you’ve downloaded the three files click on the executable file called Realms of Arcania, that has DJ Old Games written on the icon. Make a note of where you install the game, so that when you unpack the two zip files you can unpack them to the same folder (it’s important that you do). Once they are all installed you’re ready to start up the game. It takes upwards of 30 seconds for the first screen to appear which looks like an old DOS screen. For those that have never seen a DOS screen; it’s black with white writing on it. It says amongst other stuff, “Press any key to Continue” - need I say more…… On doing this the game will load, going through several introductory screens before playing a video sequence which is worth watching just to get an idea as to what the game visuals are going to look like, (though the intro videos were always better than the actual game) – Still, I was quite surprised at the quality of the 3D world considering it’s well over a decade old. It’s nothing compared to the many RPG games around now, for example, the game I’m playing now (oblivion) has the most amazing 3D world, with places looking almost photographic. I’m playing that game not just for the game play which is exceptional, but for the beautiful graphics. If you’ve never owned an RPG though; this game should be well worth trying out.

Once the game screen appears you’ll see the characters that are part of your team. The boxes to the right are buttons for deleting characters, saving the game and exiting as well as a few others. I’ll leave it to you to discover all of this though.

The good news for those that don’t or can’t use both keyboard and mouse together, you can control the game with either /or. When leaving the game, it seems as slow to return to the desktop as it was to get the game to start up, but it does after about 30 seconds. It may even shut down with errors, but it has no effect upon your computer. With respect to playing the game, there is no manual, but the five game play videos will give you a good grounding in what you need to do to work your way through the menus and other aspects of game play. I’ve added the length of time each video lasts)

Video: (Takes ages to load) The dialogue panels that pop up are shown in German, and the voice-overs are also in German, but the versions you can download are either English or Czech (you can choose). It looks much better when actually playing it than from the You Tube videos.

=========================================================================

The following video shows the fourth in the series, which was unfortunately never released. It seriously reminds me of a brilliant RPG I bought recently with the same perspective called Hard to be a God, which was released towards the end of last year. I picked it up for $15. (See end of post for video)

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=1-_aQrjoFmE&NR=1

Though it looks like the game is being reborn – I just found the following video on the net, though this isn’t part of the freebie, lol:

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=tvbrgdyhqx0&feature=related

Here’s a couple more RPG’s that I highly recommend. They are all available at bargain basement prices now, though Oblivion is still probably quite expensive:

Two Worlds:

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=9Fsw3vvBkos&feature=related

Oblivion:

older games that you’ll probably pick up for around $5

Wizardry 8:

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=XBEiltcOqP0

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Eaot30UKfyQ

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=s3t_Qecnpac&feature=related

Heroes of Might and Magic:

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=KDMvtcyJOoo

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=eRhLzWiFTDM

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Za_lVdfNBA0

And a close cousin to the RPG is the Strategy game. I have number 2,3 and 4 of the ones portrayed in the list mentioned in the video below, and highly recommend them all, though personally I think the Command an Conquer series is over rated (I have two of those as well plus from the ones that are now abandonware – I’ll be posting details of those in a few weeks, though they have already been mentioned previously on the forums over the last year, and one only a few weeks ago – if you can’t remember and want to be surprised next month, don’t search, lol). The World in Conflict clip was shown from the closest viewpoint. It’s actually very hard to play the game in that viewpoint, generally it’s best played from a distance so that you can see all your units and the enemy ones as well.

Best Strategy games 2007:

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=fdpZw2aLWqc&feature=related

I’ve added all the above to give those that are new to gaming an idea as to how this genre as developed over the past decade. I realize that today’s free games are rather old looking when you compare them, but the game play is still as good now as it was then. The basic game play is similar to most of the recent RPG’s that are available.
