Note: I haven't tried Data Crow yet. I've been using Libra - DVD, Book, Audio CD, Game library organizer software. Even bought a CueCat barcode reader to scan my books & Cd's into the database. It's a nice program, but there are some occasional glitches and the developers haven't been very responsive to their users problems since November 2007. I'm looking forward to tying this new program out.

W2K...I sometimes wish I hadn't replaced it with XP.

I still have that version and I'd love to work with it again. But I don't know if it's possible to make a dual boot *after* you have XP installed.
There should be a trick to do this but I can't find the workaround anymore.

Thanks for the nfo ,goodgotd!

:)

But I do still have an image of W2K ,but I guess then again I need a special entry to adjust the boot.ini file.

well, yeah, to most of that, but ghost doesn't care as I use ubcd 4.11 to boot freedos to run it.

I'll see what it does when I get to it.

terri's running (just fine) a test restore from a copied (and dvd saved) ghost image of a 4-gig drive with a basic-needs install including drivers, so I'll never need a win2k install disc for that machine again.

I'm gonna do that for all of 'em.

Hi

Does Ghost 2001 still work well with WINXP?
I always used Ghost in the past(prior to XP), but they kept launching new versions so I assumed it was not recommended anymore.(Or how to milk the customer?)

I guess EASEUS disk copy works a bit like Acronis True Image...(sector by sector copy)

andLinux- http://www.andlinux.org/index.php

andLinux is a complete Ubuntu Linux system running seamlessly in Windows 2000 based systems (2000, XP, 2003, Vista; 32-bit versions only). This project was started for Dynamism for the GP2X community, but its userbase far exceeds its original design. andLinux is free and will remain so, but donations are greatly needed.

andLinux uses coLinux as its core which is confusing for many people. coLinux is a port of the Linux kernel to Windows. Although this technology is a bit like running Linux in a virtual machine, coLinux differs itself by being more of a merger of Windows and the Linux kernel and not an emulated PC, making it more efficient. Xming is used as X server and PulseAudio as sound server.

andLinux is not just for development and runs almost all Linux applications without modification.

Requirements

    * OS: Windows 2000 / XP / 2003 / Vista (currently only the 32-bit versions are supported)
* Memory: at least 128 MB (192 MB or more is recommended)
Note that you should have enough memory left for Windows (at least 128 MB for Windows 2000 / XP / 2003; at least 512 MB for Windows Vista)!
* Hard disk space: 2.5 GB (XFCE version) / 4.5 GB (KDE version)
Note that you need an NTFS file system (which is default since Windows 2000) because you can't create files larger than 2 GB on FAT(32) file systems!
* A good internet connection (to be able to install further applications via apt-get / Synaptic)
* Some basic Linux skills to proceed once andLinux is installed

What you will get

You will get:

    * a fully functional Linux system, however without the usual desktop (you've already got one from Windows)
* a second panel (e.g. at the top of your Windows desktop) or a second start menu (in the system tray next to the clock), from which you can start Linux applications
* Linux applications and Windows applications can be used simultaneously and you can cut and paste text between them
* apt / Synaptic to install further applications

You will NOT get:

    * another desktop
* the bench of applications that usually ship with Linux distributions (you have to fetch whatever you want)
* a printer driver
* trouble with further drivers ;-)

Security warning: It is recommended to use andLinux only on single-user-PCs or in a trustworthy environment because the communication with the X-Server and the launcher is not secured, i.e., every user who can login to Windows can access andLinux.

fax software for fax modems

Stupid Fax V1.1.0.11

works with TAPI Fax modems to automatically print and save incoming fax calls. Incoming faxes are automatically routed and printed to the windows default printer. All incoming calls are logged with time, date and status information. All printed files are logged with time, date and print status information. Users can reprint historical faxes if needed. StupidFax was created to help users who just need a simple, reliable program to receive faxes. You'll find StupidFax really isn't so stupid when you need a program to just act as an incoming Fax Machine. Keywords: Free fax software easy TAPI modem

http://www.maxmax.com/aDownloads.htm

Budgie 1.6 (last freeware version)

Win98/NT/ME/2000/XP

This suite contains a contacts manager, word processing capabilities, a database manager, a spreadsheet utility, an e-mail manager, an image tool, a scheduling utility, a ZIP manager, and a fax manager. You can use it as a stand-alone or as an add-on to your existing Office software.

Because it's contained in one application or integrated via the plugin system, each module is integrated. Budgie is contacts-driven and you can use contacts data in all the main modules. You can interface your contacts data files with the user-created databases. If you reference a contact in the Schedule you can get a running history of what you did with that contact or the whole history of the company he/she works for.

The spreadsheet is closely integrated with whatever databases you create. Naturally the communications tools (email and fax) integrate with contacts, and the word processor can merge data from contacts files and user-created databases. The word processor has a special database mode through which you can create a hierarchical filing system for most documents in compressed form.

Moreover, you won't have trouble importing your data from other applications. The word processor has extensive file import and export converters so you can read and save in many formats. The spreadsheet reads Microsoft Excel files, files in text-delimited format and dBase files and saves in these formats as well as its own special format. Contacts natively reads QuickBooks export lists and has a simple-to-use importer for dBase files (which you can create in the spreadsheet from other formats, or export to from your existing software). You can use the spreadsheet to query your user-created databases and save the result in several formats. The Schedule and Contacts can synchronize with a Pocket PC.

PrintFolders offers three customizable output formats: HTML, plain-text and unformatted plain-text. All you need is to choose what to include into the list, how the list will look and where it will be placed.

Other features include: support for ID3 v1.x, v2.3.x and v2.4.x tags, the "Custom root" function for more convenient cataloguing of files to be burned onto a CD, ability to limit the number of subfolders ("Deepest subfolder level"), file filter for filtering what to include into the list, HTML output customization.

That reassuring tidbit only means it won't let you make a typo, so you can't have 2 = signs in a row, and hopefully checks and makes sure there's a directory where you say it is.

In DOS based systems this stuff was in autoexec.bat where you could get at it.

But...

It lets you change the TEMP and TMP variables, which point to the temporary directory, which is where the system puts temporary files, the gaotd and ggaotd installers put temp (.tmp) files, winrar, winzip and so on put... you get the picture.

General catch all. An example, using the default location for temp:

If you try to install, say, I love kittens! (253 MB) which you downloaded to someplace on the c: drive and start the install, the ggaotd wrapper unpacks it to the temp dir (now there's 506 MB used on c:), starts the game's installer, and if you choose to install it to c:, then you'll need at least another 253 megs (probably lots more) to get it done, or something over 760 megs.

If you downloaded to d:, and your temp directory is on e:, and installed onto c:, then D: and E: only need 253 megs free, and C: only needs the space the installed game takes up.

Default is usually c:\documents and settings\[username]\temp, which is a pain to get to when you wanna clean it out, and sucks space on the c: drive.

(under WinNT, 2000, XP, that is... Under the Win9x-ME series it's c:\windows\temp - as an aside, while desktop, sendto, and 'my documents' under NT OS's are in the documents and settings tree- split up depending on permissions, usernames and whim- Win9x puts 'my documents' at c:\my documents and stuffs the rest under c:\windows. <sigh> Microsoft.)

Make the directory first, Click on the little plus next to the temp and tmp entries, and remove the default and add your new one. I use f:\!getrid, personally.

It also lets you add directories to your path, which is a list of the places windows looks for a dll or exe or bat file if it isn't in the directory here the call for it was placed.

if unsure, bail- until you use the save button, it's safe.

it's a more 'manual' approach than this item (which I forgot to post here, idiot that I am, and windows darn well does grow!):

I haven't tried it yet (I moved mine the "hard way"), and for all my distaste for eaz fix- under freeware they have this:

http://www.eazsolution.com/en/download_foldermover.php

Software: Folder Mover
Type: Free
Size: 1.69Mb
OS: Win9x/ME/2000/XP
Version: v1.0

Why move System Folders to another drive or partition?

Most folks place their personal data in My Documents, in Outlook Emails or on Windows Desktop. Unfortunately, these files or folders are by default located on the C: drive, the same drive that contains the Windows operating system. Storing these two things together on the same drive is not a great idea for several reasons. Here are just few:

First, your personal data is very likely to be growing in size while Windows is not. In this era of multi mega pixel digital photos you are in real danger of filling up your C: drive. This progressively degrades Windows performance. Sooner or later you'll fill up the disk and have to make more space by deleting some of your personal files or get into the complex and problem- fraught exercise of increasing the size of your primary disk partition.... <more on the page>
