the occasional exceptions are the giveaways like a-squared anti-malware where they give away a 6 month or 1 year subscriptions where the giveaway code allows you to open an account on the vendor's website. the free account has to be created in the giveaway window, but for the time the account is valid generally reinstall is fine.

however, the gaotd zip file and the software-wrapper setup.exe or activate.exe inside is useless as soon as the giveaway window closes. no sense in saving them aside from compulsive historical mania. and even I only save the little ones.

backing up and restoring your system as protection against misfortune is sensible and (sensibly) not objected to, as that's simply continuing to use the original installation- but reinstalls are in general not an option.

only a few vendors allow updates without reverting to trial versions, so back up first- and the safest bet (aside from the remote-account exceptions above) is to lock out the update options as soon as installed.

discussions of ways around, under, or through the limitations are forbidden according to the forum rules, second sticky from the bottom, number 7.

All software must be downloaded, installed and activated within the 24 hour period although sometimes they give us 48 hours. Once it is installed and activated, it is yours to keep for as long as you want. The software can not be replaced if it is lost.

As I am new to this forum I wonder if some kind person could advise me in respect of the following.
Unless I am using a program every day I like to store it in its installation exe. file in a folder in My Documents.
Then when I want to use it I simply double click the file, install it and use it.
With regard to the Give Away programs on this site, can they be stored in this way or can they not be used after the expiry date; and also, if it becomes necessary to reinstall Windows after a crash are all the files from this site lost even if they are backed up?

Thanks Tony
