Sites Of The Month - Great Sites To Check Out In November

Common Sense Media
http://commonsensemedia.org - Common Sense Media is an organization that recognizes how prevalent media is—enough to become "the other parent" in kids' lives. Their website addresses the situation by providing information and reviews about movies, games, websites, TV, books, and music. You can search by age (2-17) or by media, and there are special sections for parents and educators. Check out community discussions on topics like Internet safety, digital citizenship, and safe social networking.

The Blind Side
http://theblindsidemovie.com - Looking for a touching movie to share with family this holiday season? The Blind Side is a film based on the true story of a homeless African-American high school student taken in by a wealthy white family. As the student faces the challenges of studying in a new environment and participating on the school football team, the family supports him and moves through challenges of their own. The site features trailers and a synopsis of the movie.

Taste of Home
http://tasteofhome.com - Here's a site that features the recipes you love—those handed down over generations and shared with family and friends. These are practical recipes because they come from regular cooks, not gourmet chefs. You'll find familiar ingredients, clear instructions, and colorful photos. Search for recipes for the holidays, or by ingredient or course. And don't forget to check out the videos on how to make a pie crust, poached eggs, quick and easy chili, and more!

SMARxT Disposal
http://smarxtdisposal.net - It might surprise you to learn that improper disposal of medications can have harmful effects on humans, wildlife, and waterways. SMARxT Disposal is a partnership between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and two pharmaceutical associations. Their site describes the problems that can occur with traditional methods of medication disposal, and offers details about how to dispose of medications properly. Watch the informative video and check out the FAQs to learn more.

Personal Travel Assistant
http://yapta.com - Your Amazing Personal Travel Assistant (YAPTA) is ready to help you find and track flight and hotel prices, and explore travel deals. The free service not only watches fare prices for you, but also continues to follow them after you buy a ticket. This means you'll always get the lowest fares possible, and may be able to claim a travel credit based on a little-known airline policy. Use the easy interface to enter your travel preferences and start tracking prices.

Thanks, Webmaster. I never would have guessed that one. I had never entered a First or Last name, so there was only one option on the drop-down menu. And it didn't occur to me that anyone would want to use their "real" First or Last Name as a username (I know, I'm just too literal for my own good sometimes!)

So far, already one person has asked me how on earth did I change my username, so I'll write it down.

So, click on your name at the top of the page (you know, Welcome, Name (click on name))
So push edit, and in the First Name, or Last Name bar, enter the new username of your choice!

Now push "Update Profile". Now push "Edit again". Under, "*Display name as:" push your new name!

That's it! I hope this helps whoever wanted to know this!

Did you know that iWin has an Ad-Supported Edition of Mortimer Beckett and the Time Paradox? It's game #58 and is tagged as being "Free, Hidden object, Purchase Only Games". I'm not sure how to interpret that description, but you can find the game here:
http://www.iwin.com/games/mortimer-beckett-and-the-time-paradox
I don't depend on my computer for Mission Critical operations, so I've updated the iWin Games Manager to version 2.82 and downloaded 2 free games — without giving out an email address. Though my PC is faring well, you might care to examine an anti-rootkit utility called IceSword.

I tried them already a while ago and my antivirus I was using at the time went off. I don't trust them. I use gamehouse. They have a free game everyday (but I don't download the free game of the day because lately it has been nothing I was interested in). But I don't care for iwin either.

I personally wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. I had loads of problems after downloading one of iWins fee games. It took me weeks to clear the registry of its influence.

Though there are games sold via other distributors that originate from iWin and after checking them with suitable security sofware were as clean as a whistle. :) I just don't trust their freebies anymore.

What's an MD5 Sum? An MD5 sum is a cryptographic hash used to verify the integrity of files. So, when you download a file, you can check what the publisher says the MD5 sum is and compare it to the MD5 sum of the file you have.

I used to use IWin many years ago but I dropped it because I started receiving emails from many different places (some unsavoury) that after much time I was able to trace back to membership in IWin. More specifically, the ads were grabbing my email address and sending me unsolicited email. I made the big mistake of trying to cancel the emails by using the unsubscribe links which actually resulted in more email. Eventually, I changed email addresses because I was unable to stop the torrent of spam that rained down on me. I can't say that IWin was malicious but coupled with my own stupidity it sure seemed that way. I suppose that with proper security safeguards that exist today this might not have happened. Nonetheless, from my perspective when you game with IWin, ULose!

Iwin requires the use of a game manager to play their games. You don't get many if any choices in the install.

When I tried it, it didn't seem to work as a freebie. I got upset with their attitude and removed everything. The only iwin games I have, I got from elsewhere!

The free games are ad-supported and are free. The download installs a manager for iwin games (which I like because it has a tab to go to the free full game downloads).
I don't know about other people, but I haven't had a problem with them.
I did install their toolbar, but I keep it disabled unless I'm looking for something (keeps it out of my way)

Is it possible, that you are on GOTD's email list and your email account informs you about the incoming message? Or your RSS feed reader? Or twitter? Or Facebook?
Twitter and especially Facebook can be really annoying with notifications when you haven't found the right buttons to opt-out.
Don't know the actual reason, and I don't use my mobile phone anymore, just trying to help thinking - LOL

Starting from just a couple of weeks ago (I've been registered for over a year) I've started getting text msgs on my mobile phone telling me of each day's GOTD giveaway, but I don't require these as I have daily browser reminders anyway.

I'm not aware of having changed my profile recently and I just can't find anywhere within my profile to turn these msgs off or where I have given my phone number; can someone please tell me where the settings are located?

Thanks in advance and apologies if it's so obvious if it's staring me in the face.

Try using an earlier version of the driver. You should be able to roll back to an earlier version via the system properties window, just click on the hardware tab. (in XP go to control panel and select Performance and Maintainance, then click on System, this brings up the system properties window. From the hardware tab select Device Manager then Display adapters. Click on the appropriate hardware device for example the name of your graphics card. This brings up another window. Click on the Driver tab. From here you can roll back to a previous version of the didplay driver.

Sometimes the latest drivers are not always the best.

So, upon buying and installing Galactic civilizations (I decided not to download the demo, because it was only 99 cents), I found that it starts up the process, but never appears. I never get an error message, it just looks like the program doesn't do anything. I have reinstalled it, and tried every compatibility setting. This has happened to me before with free games that I was going to try, but I didn't even try to make them work, because they were free. I have an Intel graphics card with the latest driver. Any ideas?

You find the "right-click-admin" in the context menu:
right click on the setup or activate.exe and search "Run as administrator" or something like that in Italian (I have a German system, but I think it'll look similar in every language; you will find it).
Some programmes need these higher rights, there is no rule of thumb, sometimes I have to install, activate and start the programme with the right-click-admin, other programmes are happy with just one right-click.
Did anybody say that computers are logical beings? :)

Hi, apetta,
you are not new to GOTD, is this the first time you can't activate?
If yes, what did you change in your routine?
I see, you have already read all the tricks and possible factors, I'm afraid there is no perfect solution for this problem. Every system is unique. In any case the things about "proxy" are important! You should try to find out if you have a proxi.
Then check your firewall and your security software and make a rule for GOTD, though I would never disable the security.
Did you enable the "right-click-administrator"? Sometimes it's not enough just to be administrator.
For problems with Paragon programmes there can be another solution, as we have seen with previously supplied Paragon giveaways, go to the Paragon site:
