Walkerpbus. For example you are on a vacation and not able to check giveaway site for a day you cannot download and activate the software in that case you can look at the previous giveaway comments and look for a better software which is free and with more facilities.

Hi Woody, There are database programs readily availab;le for free if you search Google or another search engine. I posted a thread last week HERE that lists hundreds of decent freeware apps and I'm sure there were database programs included?

You can also find free database programs HERE, HERE and HERE.

The last link is four years old, showever some of the programs suggested will have been updated.

I do have a whole bunch of free databases stored on one of my external HDD's, but at the moment I'm unable to remember which of the discs it's on. What precious time I have awake is taken up fully with several projects and family at the moment. When I do find them, I'll list the programs here.

I'm sure there are some threads in this forum that deal with your question, unfortunately they aren't always tagged, so it can be hard to find them using the search function.

Hello woody19021, Kingsoft Office (today's giveaway) has a database component (similar to Microsoft) - you can verify this yourself if you download and use the program.

Personally I think all the fuss about spelling and grammar is a no brainer - so long as you can understand what is being said it shouldn't matter if there are spelling errors. Many of the giveaways we are getting are from non-English speaking countries, so I think the attempts that are made to create an English version is brilliant (despite errors). Some argue that the dev's should employ someone to translate. My brother in law runs a translation business out of Poznan in Poland and the charges are usually for the number of words you translate and it's not cheap, so being forced to do that may increase the price of the software. If the program works well, should we be so bothered about those insignificant errors. IMO a categorical NO

I find the off topic discussions just get in the way of the factual stuff that we and the developer wants to read. The developer may even consider not bothering with the giveaway project again if all they get is criticisms that aren’t even related to the working of the program.

The English bard Shakespeare spelled his name differently many times yet no one picks up on his spelling errors despite English being his native language.

As Mikiem mentions, many of the community members that complain of these errors also spell badly themselves.

Today there was again quite a few comments based on spelling & grammar error on the AthTek site -- there were also several comments blasting the dev because people couldn't find awards/reviews on the American version of the sites listed... international companies like PCMag do have separate, localized sites & AthTek did show up in Google searches for those localized sites.

On the one hand, if a company like AthTek wants to sell to US customers, those are complaints they'll have to decide how or if they want to deal with -- it's much better to know why some portion of the market doesn't like you than trying to guess.

And on the other hand it makes some folks, myself included sometimes want to scream... I see spelling & grammar errors all the time, very often in the same comments complaining about some company's poor grasp of English. Today was interesting because the developer's responding to complaints sparked it's own debate, on whether it was proper for a company to respond that way or not -- I imagine that if the poor dev is from another culture that must really have been confusing.

So my question is -- and I really don't know the answer -- is it better to speak out or keep quiet?

If the dev, whomever it is that day, doesn't hear what I consider maybe irrelevant comments, then maybe GOTD isn't being as useful as it could be. But OTOH if people don't speak out, does that drive others away from the site, which could have the same end effect of not being as useful as possible. I imagine it's a 2-way street -- if GOTD isn't helpful to software companies, they won't be helpful to GOTD.

Hi guys!

Recognized this day when visited your website that the Ticker system we use in gadgets as well inside own blogs doesn't let the viewer see if there's more giveaways going on besides the regular program that are announced and published.

Would be wonderful see all active giveaways in these tickers.
Much appreciated if it is possible to fix this in a near future :)

Best Regards
Thanks

With this Thursday's download page was a different version of Idea Informer, which enabled comments to be separated out into improvements, queries, bugs, and bouquets. Was this just a one off? It seemed like a useful way forward and I was sorry to see it disappear, apparently without trace..

Today the top two suggestions are asking for features that are already in the Odin Video vconverter software, indicating that visitors are voting based on what seems a sensible idea (with lots of votes already) rather than their own experience of the application. Is this likely to give the developer useful feedback or encourage others to offer their wares?

One of the advantages of the categorised Idea Informer would be its position at the top of the page. Today's only comment to make it past moderation so far is a query about formats for Windows mobile phones. This would be fine under questions in Idea Informer, wouldn't then be liable to lots of negative votes - and someone could have responded to it. For those who are having problems it would help not to have to hunt through a long list of comments to see if anyone else is having the same difficulty.

This would (you'd hope) reduce the number of less than useful comments on the 'main' section of the download page.

You could also consider letting users indicate under which category they think an Idea Informer comment should be - either to Moderators via response comments or 'simply' by the number of visitors who tag a statement as actually being a question of plain misleading.

Thanks anyway for all the freebies.

I can't see why GOTD doesn't publish the MD5 for downloads - along with some instructions (or a youtube video) to a free utility like http://www.georgejopling.co.uk/md5check/md5check.html (If you are unfamiliar with MD5 checks - there is an explanation on this webpage).

At least it could go some of the way to reducing the questions users post saying "there is a problem with the download". If they can verify that the problem is with what they received, and not with the file that is sitting on the GOTD servers.

If it helps, is of interest or whatever, saw a map the other day -- in a nutshell, in large portions of the US a surprisingly large % of downloads fail to complete... if I remember correctly somewhere around 80% success was tops, & it went sometimes rapidly downhill from there.

Hi Old Fella, if you did get a full download and still get a corrupted message try using another file archiver such as J-Zip or 7-Zip (both are free) I sometimes get the same problem when using winrar. Using one of the others has always sorted the proble.

Hi, Old fella, welcome to the forums.
I tested the zip file and didn't find any problem.
It seems your download was interrupted.
Clear your download cache and re-download, then extract the files to your desktop or any folder.
When you use a download-manager like Free Download Manager you can resume broken downloads.
.

Increase your download speed and resume broken downloads
FDM accelerates downloads by splitting files into sections and then downloading them simultaneously. As a result download speed increases up to 600%, or even more! FDM can also resume broken downloads so you needn`t start downloading from the beginning after casual interruption....
http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/

Hello Team :)

That is a wise decision, indeed.
It's not only better for your clients - users and developers - but for the reputation of the GOTD project too.

Thanks for the info!

graylox

PS: Is there any hope, that there is a cure for the ailing voting system too?

Hello everybody!

First of all let us thank you all for your concerns and suggestions regarding GOTD freeware library. We created that part of the project for you to be able to find free alternatives for the titles no more available as giveaways.

Unfortunately, further proper support of this section is impossible due to technical reasons. Thus the decision was made to close it permanently.

We are sorry for any inconvenience it may cause.

Best regards,
GOTD project team

Any idea why the Freeware Section is still in "Beta 2" (top of the page) after all this time? Seems it's been months.

I'll be asking the devs, too, but wanted to see what forum users knew.

As Bubby said, clearly Tipard and Aiseesoft are at the very least affiliated if not the same. This has been discussed before several times and this has become Aiseesoft's chosen tact. Please refer to here and direct any further comments on the already created thread so as to keep the forum nice and clean. For more on untrustworthy developers, see here.

Let's not forget this conversation on thumbs up and down.
