Finally Tuesdays games are here…. I apologise for the lateness, but as I’ve said to a few community members that I’ve finally fulfilled promises too, better late than never. There’s a good range of genres to be found in my selection for today. A cool point and click adventure, a bug orientated racing game, an interesting clone of the DOS based puzzle Gear works (which is windows not DOS) and finally a great arkanoid taster.

I’ll have some more games for you tomorrow, though technically they are actually today’s games. reverseOrder will also be posting his games tomorrow, so you’ll have a double bonus to look forwards to as you have today with wizard posting a great game from Vertigo games as well. (thanks Wizz). I’ve neglected to include my screen shots. I need to create a couple more photobucket accounts as they only allow so much bandwidth each month. I hate the images disappearing as it looks so shoddy, so need to create a few more. Which means I need to create some more emails as you can only use an Email once when creating a free account. You’ll see images appearing over the next several hours and hopefully by the time I post today’s games in the morning (or around lunch time, I’ll have all the images uploaded. It’s added a lot of extra work adding images, but I do think it helps to give you a better idea as to what to expect. I realize some of you have capped download limits out there so I’d hate for you to be downloading too many games that you decide aren’t your thing. It’s hard to give a global description to any game as we all have our preferences, and sometimes I may describe a game as fantastic, but in reality it’s only fantastic to me, lol. :) anyway, here’s today’s selection. Please do leave a comment if you decide to download, if only to say what you though of the game. Thank you in advance.

I've uploaded too many images to post below so though it would be cool to post a link to all the images. i've placed them all in the same folder, but labelled them, so you can see which images belong to which games. THIS link takes you to a page with all the images on. you can click on individual pictures to see a larger resolution image, though photobucket only allow up to 800 x 600 resolution images with the free account; however the size is adequate for the purposes of this post. You can also see all the images as a slideshow HERE, where you can see all the images in the highest resolution automatically. There is a slider to the top right of the grid page (where you can see all the images), which enlarges all the thumbnails to a respectably sized small image. :)

A point & Click Adventure developed by Dreamagination. Mistyann PM’ed me several days ago recommending this great little point and click adventure which was developed as freeware by Dreamagination. I noted that they have had bandwidth problems in the past when there’s been a run of downloads from their own download link, so, if you have problems downloading from the first lik provided below, use the second one which is unlikely to go down. However use the developers link first as I’m sure they would like to know the number of downloads that are made.

When a plastic surgeon is found murdered in his office the police are quick to apprehend a prime suspect. It is a textbook case – except the suspect didn’t do it. There is more to the deceased doctor than meets the eye. Much more.

The aim of the adventure is to lead private investigator Alan Baxter to the truth as an ever-increasing mystery unravels before his eyes. Follow clues to exciting locales such as Los Angeles, Las Vegas and New York. Feel the vibrant style of the 1960s era and meet a fascinating variety of characters. 'Enjoy' a story that will keep you guessing until the end.

The game was inspired by the artworks of Josh Agle; this project tries to revive the buzzing and stylish lifestyle of the early 1960s. It was developed using the Wintermute Engine

The Gear That Works: (1.2Mb)

This is a Gearworks clone (see links to the original abandonware version below) Basically you have to connect the red cog to the green cog so that all the other cogs turn and you win the level. The game is virtually the same as Gearworks except the graphics are much improved and the levels are different. The levels get progressively harder (as you would expect in a puzzle game). This is an ideal game to play in short bursts; for example, during a coffe break at work, or if you’re like me, as a break from one of the big boys like Call of Duty or Crysis. :)

The following description was written by The Game Hippo reference <a href=" http://www.thegamehippo.com/game.php?Game=5828473">HERE. You can also get the latest version of the game from their site by following the reference link above.

The Gear That Works is a simple logic based puzzle game involving three different sized cogwheels, a start point, an end point, and no questions asked. The aim of the game is to connect the starting cog to the ending cog in such a way so that both of them are spinning. This can be made difficult due to gaps in the play board, spinning cogs placed in hard to reach places, and my favorite: accidental jams (placing cogs in such a way that they stop each other).

You can place cogs anywhere you like on the board and you're given three cog removals every five levels. Removals are handy, so only use them if you jam up your chain. The fact that you can place cogs anywhere and that you get a point deduction for every cog that isn't spinning when you finish the level adds a unique strategy aspect to the game.

If you're given a cog that isn't useful, you have two options: either place it out of the way or latch it onto a cog in a way that it won't hinder the rest of the chain. If you place it out of the way, then that cog won't be part of the chain and therefore won't be spinning when you finish the level, resulting in a point deduction. On the other hand, latching the cog onto the chain may end up ruining future moves if you choose a wrong spot.

As a side note, the music is about as simple and catchy as it gets. It got to the point where I left the window open just to hear it. I'm sure the majority will find it annoying, but I rather liked it.

In short, The Gear That Works is an addictive and simple puzzle game that's sure to waste some time during your coffee break.

Rival Ball: (3.89Mb)

Rival Ball is in the style of the classic old school arkanoid games, with decent graphics.

Destroy all the blocks on the level to pass through to the next. There are many bonus’s that will appear when some of the blocks are destroyed. These include guns, speedup, slow down, skull and bones, and all the other common pickups in arkanoid games. It’s only a short game with 8 sets of 3 levels each. I though it worth tagging onto todays free games. It’s more an intro to the larger game This is a free sequel to DX Ball 2. There is a commercial version of Rival bBall which I purchased (around 4 years ago)before finding this free version.

I loved DX Ball 2 (all the level packs that used to cost extra are now free if you own the full version game of DX Ball 2) and its sequel is equally as good to play. (I don’t regret buying it, though I paid a lot more money that what’s being asked for now) The commercial version has loads more levels and extra level packs (costs around $5 each and can be found HERE). There’s actually more levels in the demo version of the commercial version (32 in the demo compared to 24 in the freeware version), so it may be worth checking that out if you liked the freeware version. :)

Hi Wiz,

I didn't know whether you'd got my message about posting this game today as I had to turn my main computer off after replying to your request to post it this week. (I wanted to set Serious sam up for Cal on his own computer). He's played it virtually all afternoon and evening since getting home from school apart from a short break during homework time and his evening meal. Glad you did see it as it makes up for me not posting my games today 'yet'. I've been asleep for virtually all day (and yesterday); making up for the marathon stay out of bed weekend that I had (I didn't go to bed from Friday morning till Monday evening. I'll be posting the games I was supposed to post yesterday later this evening and will post my Wednesday games tomorrow morning around lunch time. Sorry I've been so late this week. The longish break I've had has made me lazy, lol. I promise I have some excellent games for you though. :)

Thank you to David Galindo of Vertigo games or this excellent freeware game. good luck in the competition - may the best games win. :)

Thanks for taking the time to correspond to David wizz and for sorting out the mention in his game for those who contrbuted. with all that you have going on this fall, you're a star for taking the time out to devote so much time to this project. It's very much appreciated by me and I reckon a lot of community members as well.

Sorry, Wizz. It only flagged the "prog.exe" for me..twice. And like I said, it did try to install something for "Startup".

Yes, Maude, it is better to be safe than sorry.

I am gonna run a few proggies tonight and see if anything pops up, especially after what Lady Grey said.

Well, Glyph had quite a lot of work for Kaspersky, 190 lines only in the "Activity Filter", but at the same time there were lots of items even in other logs - but they are not clearly named.
The first attempt to install the game was stopped by Kaspersky, I had to change the rules first.
Wiz, I PMed you the log file. Just for your information.

Ok so I have something slightly different in store for everyone today. David Galindo, Vertigo Games, and I have been e-mailing each other off and on for some months now and I checked my inbox today and had a special request from him. David would like for the GOTD community to know that Vertigo has a new game out called Kablooey! Kablooey is a freeware game that he currently has running in the finals for 2beegames's 2nd competition. His hopes are that everyone will enjoy the game so much that they will vote for his game to win. Now that the background is done....

Kablooey is really an excellent game with a rather unique concept. The backstory is that the mayor has done a really bad job of cleaning up the city like he promised the President he would. The President is visiting in a few days and you need to bust your butt to clean up! This is where you're probably thinking "OK, I'm gonna pick up some trash, maybe bust up some criminals..." That's where David throws you a curve ball. You see the entire city from a side view with little hands popped up here and there. Your job is to select two hands to join them to logically produce an end result. For example...you would join the fresh donuts with the hot coffee. The kicker is, that there are a bunch of hands and only 60 seconds to do it in. Really frantic clicking going on here lol. I enjoy the game, but I fear others may be put off by the extreme quickness of the game. You get two "hours" to advance through some goals, if you don't complete them, your day is done and you've lost. Trust me it sounds hard, but it really is harder if you don't have a game plan. I'd give it a go. Just a head's up there is a nag screen at the end of the game asking you to vote for the game. Even if you're passing on today's game, it could be a real easy way to thank Vertigo for all the great games they've given us for free...including Spirits of Metropolis given to us by GGOTD.

Download:
http://www.vertigogaming.net/game/kablooey

Vote!:
http://www.2beegames.com/

OneNita - you're right, the newest Avast definitions don't block Glyph for me anymore, either! Thanks for the tip.

wizzard_of_ozz - you're right, too! I should have remembered that since I have my receipt/unlock code, I would be able to download later.

delenn13 - I can't speak to A2, but Avast wasn't flagging a hidden file. It specifically alerted to the presence of the Win32 virus which, as I said in my first post, it has done to 2 other game files in the past, and both of those were false positives, also. Still, better safe than sorry, even at the cost of the occasional false positive.

Aha I've found Face's problem. Without the prog.exe file in place, I get their error word for word. Did your A-V flag the file and you quarantined?

Delenn, Uninstall.exe is not a hidden file. Why would it flag that file if it's not hidden? It did flag the hidden prog.exe file. Virustotal.com lists the file as being malicious in 53.66% of the A-V programs used to test it. Sounds a bit too mixed to me. I think for the sake of "better safe than sorry," I'll uninstall this one or at least try quarantining the file and seeing if it had any effect on the game.

Did you type in the unlock code or COPY it from your receipt email? These things are so tricky that you should always use the copy/paste method. Be VERY careful not to get anything in front of or behind the actual code.

First, Thanks everyone for the links and the info. I'm having a problem that no one has mentioned yet.

I downloaded and installed 'Glyph' with no problem, but am having trouble unlocking it. I entered the Activation Code and got:

"Unable to find part of the game filename error (-15)."

I hit OK, since I had installed to my 'Games' folder and thought (hoped?) it would work itself out. Then I got:

"Unexpected unlock key error (-22). System is not configured correctly."

Again, I hit OK and got - Nowhere!

I tried their "Need Help?" which I did - but found nothing useful except the opportunity to send it to Customer Support - which I did, but then wondered if perhaps you guys could help faster/better (and, you know, with more love!)

So the bottom line is - I still need help and hope there's some out there...

It, in reality, is NOT a false positive. You set A2 to detect "Hidden Files/Programs"(I did also) and it did it's job. It detected the Hidden exe in the bin folder. It is up to your discretion as to allow it or not. And that is probably what Avast did also. I use Avira and it didn't detect it.(Which scares me.)

It also tries to set up something in Startup(per Startup Monitor) but I denied it. Sorry I didn't notice what it was as I got interrupted in the setup by the hubby and I just clicked "Deny".

Cheap doesn't always mean bad. The Ghost Recon games are $5, and they aren't bad at all. I think it has more to do with age and overall popularity of the game.

Thanks wiz,

It was late last night I was being lazy, thought I'd ask instead of googling.
With your info and a little searching, there was a sale that ended on the 23rd. I guess it has been extended for steam. It still shows it on D2d, but if you click to buy it, it changes to 19.99.

I really didnt care about it. The one I wanted to try was Rome, but if it is that cheap it must suck. Then again, combat wings: battle for britain, is that cheap and rabbit likes it. It has nice looking graphics too.

I have Avast and it did not block Glyph. It downloaded and registered smoothly. I downloaded at 8:20am EST on 11/25/09. They may have changed something by now.

txnnok, what you are referring to is just simply a new way to find the best games in those price ranges. Doesn't necessarily mean that they are on sale. The Star Wars Galaxies is on sale right now. I browse by the homepage. If you scroll towards the bottom, you'll see a list of games that you can sort by new release, top sellers, coming soon, and SPECIALS. I check the specials tab every few days for what's currently on sale. For those that would rather link directly to the homepage than follow txnnok's links and click on home:

Speaking of 5 dollar games, hey rabbit or wizard, IS that new steam thing about 5 and 10 dollar games for good or just temp. Some of the games have slashes through them or besides the weekend game, Star Wars Galaxies was 19.99 u.s. now 9.99u.s.

Just wondering if this price is going to go back after a period of time. I was thinking there was another, but I guess that was it.

Browse for the Top Games Under $10/£7/10€ or Top Games Under $5/£4/5€ and find the day's top-sellers.

That's true about no longer being available Maud, but once you have the registration code they provide on the checkout before you download, you'll own a copy. You could always come back and download later once they've sorted the false-positive.

Merri - Thanks, I will do as you did. I have been thinking about switching from Avast to Microsoft Security Essentials, about which I have heard good things, before my Avast registration needs to be renewed shortly. But doing what you did will allow me to download Glyph without needing to get the other done first as well.

Dragonlair - Thanks for the info. I did report the false positive without actually sending the file since, as you said, I don't have it. Avast flagged the download during its course, and there is a button to click on the alert which brings up a window where you can enter info about the download that you think is being flagged incorrectly. It may be something they check out only if they get a lot of such reports; I don't know. On the previous game files they flagged which were already on my PC, I was able to send them the files and they did, after a few weeks, change their definitions so those files were no longer flagged, but an offer like this one would no longer be available by the time that had occurred.

Steams Midweek madness – Plants & Zombies for only £3.49 (~$5): This is a brilliant tower defence game with a difference. I return to this game regularly and find it always seems to offer something different. The game has a lot of re-playability as each time you play it you can set your defences differently. As you progress through the game the levels get harder but you also get access to more power ups.

THE GAME:

An all-new action-strategy game from PopCap, makers of Bejeweled and Peggle!
Zombies are invading your home, and the only defense is your arsenal of plants! Armed with an alien nursery-worth of zombie-zapping plants like peashooters and cherry bombs, you'll need to think fast and plant faster to stop dozens of types of zombies dead in their tracks. Obstacles like a setting sun, creeping fog and a swimming pool add to the challenge, and with five game modes to dig into, the fun never dies!
