Mike,(comment 46)That worked for me, I had hoped that was the solution
for you too. I was really frustrated. Just a guess, could it be a firewall issue?

Worked in windows 7.
In windows 8, it seems working but has bugs, eg. asks for registration on right clicks.
In this case there is a reason why it correctly does not state windows 8 compatible.

@ 35. It is possible your environment variable has been changed. This will cause permission issues. The variable is sometimes changed when .NetFramework 4 is installed via Windows updates.

Click Start > right click Computer > Properties. In the left pane click on the link "Advanced system settings". Click on the Advanced tab. At the bottom of the Window click on the "Environment Variables" button. In the bottom window scroll down to "Path and click on it then click the "Edit" button. In the new small window the variable path will be highlighted. Right click on it an choose copy. Now open a notepad and choose paste. Compare what you pasted to the below. If what you pasted is different then replace it with what is below.

Be advised the above instructions assumes Windows is installed on C:\ drive. If that is not the case simply input the proper drive letter.

C:\Windows\system32;C:\Windows;C:\Windows\System32\Wbem;C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\

@34 I've tried unzipping to downloads folder and to a folder on desktop. neither work on this laptop. I have a netbook too and I can get it work there unzipping to downloads folder. I've even transferred the unzipped folder from the netbook, to my laptop and still it says files are corrupt. Any other zipped file or exe I download is fine, it's only files from this site that don't like my laptop, and I just don't understand!!

Thanks for your help though

Does anyone know if by upgrading from the previous giveaway, it keeps my own Users icons that I've created or does it wipe them?

I personally can't see a big advantage to a program like this. WHY? It's all about organization. It sounds like a lot of people have one huge partition with all their folders in it.

I have my hard drive partitioned into 7 different catagories. Some of the partitions (which appear as separate drives) are, Misc(D), Cad(E), Cars(F), Photos(G) etc etc.

I then put shortcuts to my most used programs on the desktop. Or a short cut to the folders themselves.

Yes I have a LOT of desktop shortcuts. But I also have folders on the desktop containing program shortcuts to programs that are not used as often. i.e. a folder called "Data sheets" another "Giovanni" etc etc.

With over 550,000 files on my HD, having a good file manager is important to keeping track and arranging all the folders etc. I use PowerDesk.

It's all about organization.

To Janet #24,

I just wonder why so many Bug were fixed from the previous version, it make me think of how many new Bugs were introduced in the newer version.
Some of the old Bugs looks like had a fatal flow and are pretty heavy in functionality.
On the other hand, I use windows native icons for folders and it works nice without any external software.
Just right click on any folder, properties, customize and just change the icon to what ever you have in the list of icons, I have hundreds and hundreds available to chose from.
It works without any headache and wary about future bug fixes and no memory used or to slow the CPU.

Folder Marker Home 3.2 installed and registered without problems on Win 7 64-bit. Sadly, I still got a 32-bit version...

There are no reviews on their site so I did a little searching:
SoftPedia (v3.2.0.0 - 2011)
dotTech (v 3.1.0.0 - 2011)
CNet (v3 - 2009)
Overall rates pretty good aside from the price.

It works without problems, the context-menu is almost identical to FolderIco and the GUI is simple, albeit a little outdated in looks. I have FolderIco installed from a previous giveaway and although I'm happy with it, it had its shortcomings. Folder Marker Home overcomes those:
* Batch processing of subfolders. Nice...
* Custom user icons! Makes it so much easier than manually setting one.
* Flawless integration into XYplorer.
So thusfar it's better than FolderIco imho.
What's still missing is the ability to change drive icons. You can do this through the Properties window or autorun.inf but it's really not that hard to implement...

The included standard icons are old XP-style and might not be to everyone's liking but you can use your own icon files. Unfortunately they don't show up in the context menu and changing the defaults to more modern Vista/7 icons requires purchasing an additional icon pack.

The only criticism I have is its rather high price tag, especially for the 60-and-a-few icons pack. Considering XP is End-of-Life $25 should give us the Vista/7 icons as well, it's not 2006 anymore. For home users the icon pack is simply too hefty in price ($20) next to the $25 for the program, notwithstanding today's discount. Maybe additional themed icon packs for $10-$20 (depending on quality and the number of icons) would sell better I think.

Still, Folder Marker Home is a definite keeper for me. Thanks GOTD and ArcticLine Software.

@ASBY and everyone else: I can't attest for the free version of course but this registered version has its auto update feature enabled by default and you can turn it off. Open the GUI through 'More icons...' in the context menu and disable it under the 'Help' menu.

This is definitely for only some folk. Had it on a previous computer, loved it, lost it, and happy to see it again. My assistant and I love it; my techie husband simply said, "Not so much." Downloaded and installed on Windows 7 64 bit no problem. But I find I have to first activate Run as Administrator before I can get program to add icon to my folders on an external drive. Extra little step, but otherwise fine. And be careful not to accidentally activate 154 folders with a pink heart. :) Another few steps to change. But all part of the learning curve. And the help folder is easy to use.

Thank you! I've had my new computer for over a year and I have been waiting for this program. FolderIco is okay but this one lets me have 3 different shades of each color. I know some won't find it useful but I download free digital scrapbooking files on a daily basis. It's helpful to put color on the folders of my most frequently used sources.

I installed on Windows 7 and did not have to reboot. Someone said the feature is already available and you can find colored folders on the internet. My husband also likes this program but didn't want me to pay that price for it. But it's free today! And I don't have to waste my time looking on the internet for colored folders.

I have used this before and have never been bugged for updates. If you right click on a folder, choose Mark Folder > More Icons, it will take you into the program. Under Help, you can uncheck the auto upgrade feature.

I'm running Windows 7 and when I try to use the program I get an error message that says:

'Unable to write to C:\Users\xxx\folder.
Looks like you don't have write permission for this folder.
Try to run the program as administrator or contact your admin.'

Well I tried running as Admin and that didn't work either. And I am the 'admin' ... so I'm not sure what to try next? I love this program and have it on all my other computers (from purchases and prior GOD promo's) - it really helps me find folders quickly and I really need/want it to work on my new system. I originally installed a paid version of the PRO and received the same error - so I thought I would try this, but no luck.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I emailed the company directly last week but haven't heard anything yet.

Thanks!

Ah! I've been looking for a program to do this for some time! I've tried Folderico, and FolderICO (different apps), Folder Color Changer, and Colorize, all of which allow you to change the icons of folders via the context menu.

FolderICO was the best, but has not been able to keep up with the 64bit wave of application changes. It still works, but not like it used to.

However, this giveaway allows you to add your own icon libraries. First, put your custom .icl files in "C:\Program Files (x86)\icl\". Now, double click on the FolderMarker.exe program. In the "Action" menu, click on "Customize Folder Marker Menu". Now you can create your own menus of icons with subitems just the way you like.

I give this application a thumbs up because it is quite customizable. What I would wish for it is that I could do all the modifications using the ini files instead, but when I edit them, nothing seems to happen.

Thank you!

There are no applications in the entire world that will make everybody happy ... You either like something or you don't. I recommend it to all of my clients. And I recommend to you to at least give it a fair chance ... If you're the type of person that musta gotta have perfect well, sorry to tell you but, nothing is or ever will be perfect. #Packetron & Giovanni

The price does seem a little high considering the GUI hasn't been updated in years, and MORE importantly neither have the icons:- I'm pretty sure Windows Vista & 7 users will not want to revert to XP style folders. (Although the "Everyday" tab does have the updates, albeit, only eleven.)
I'm confident an update would be easy enough for the developer and would entice many more users and generate more income for him?.
Even I, on an XP machine having "Vista Transformation Pack" installed have the more aesthetically pleasing modern folder types. Maybe the developer could include "both types", now there's an idea for him !
Another improvement would be to be able to change system drive icons for the same price, as changing "ANY" icon can be done for free, this program would just make it all that little easier.

After what I see on their site, this soft looks like a clone of FolderIco 1.0 offered here one month ago by TeoreX (the developers of Inpaint, IResizer etc.). Or is FolderIco (more recent considering its version number) a clone of Folder Marker?

In any case, is it worth for those who downloaded FolderIco 1.0 to replace it with Folder Marker 3.2?

One thing missing IMHO in FolderIco is that it can’t batch process folders. Can Folder Marker do that? This would make the difference for me.

Thanks in advance for any information.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but this feature has been available in Windows for many years. I have used it in XP, Vista and 7. It's just that not many people bother to explore their Windows capabilities full, but Windows cannot be blamed for that!

For those, who like myself, work from their personal home computer this is a great little offer. My desktop screen is always loaded with new folders by the end of the work day due to the constant need for new temporary folders. This type of software makes it easy to locate a specific folder much faster and, let's face it, time is money.

Having said the above, I don't see a benefit significant enough to justify the price of this software. I would agree with a previous comment to reduce the price by half. If this software had the ability to encrypt and password protect a chosen folder the price would probably be fair. However, that is not the case.

I will stick with FolderIco free version as the options for paid versions are not of significant difference to justify the cost. JMO

New Version 3.2 of Folder Marker. Changes from last GAOTD v.3.1:

* Completely rewritten mechanism of building the Mark Folder popup menu. Now the menu pops up much faster than before and it can display more icons simultaneously.
+ Now it is more convenient to use the More Icons menu. The menu opens into the tab that was last used.
+ Interface is localized to Indonesian.
* The program is easier to register as you no longer need to restart Windows after the registration.
* Completely rewritten help system. The help system is easy to understand and more user-friendly.
- Bug fixed: After the registration the Buy Now item failed to disappear from the Mark Folder menu.
- Bug fixed: After adding new items the Mark Folder menu failed to display correctly.
- Bug fixed: The Customize Mark Folder Menu window took too long to open in Windows 7 and Vista.
- Bug fixed: On selecting Mark Folder -> More Icons, Windows Explorer used to hang until Folder Marker is closed.
- Bug fixed: Folder Marker used to hang if the user selected More Icons->Action->Refresh system icons.
- Bug fixed: The program showed an error message "... is not valid integer value" on start if a non-standard icon was used as a default folder icon.
- Bug fixed: The main window displayed incorrectly in the systems with increased font size.
Other minor bug fixes and improvements.

Doesn't work on Windows 8
Although the website doesn't say Windows 8 is supported, I liked the idea of this program and tried installing it on Win 8 Pro x64. Installation and registration went flawlessly. Unfortunately, the right-click context menu for customizing folders doesn't work at all. Uninstallation went smoothly, although I was instructed to reboot to complete the job, which was a little irritating. I suppose I could have tried installing as (and/or running the program as) administrator, but I will leave that escalation up to the next Windows 8 user who wants to try it.

Very handy and time saving app today, especially suitable for home working and for geeks like me with tons of messy folders stored in their PC. So THUMBS UP from me, even though this is just the HOME version instead of the more advanced PRO one (so it doesn't support network folder changes)!!

That being said.... 25 $? Hmm....a little bit overpriced, isn't it dudes? LOL!!

It's a shame, that windows users still need crutches like this one to still only get a fraction of what has been a standard Mac tool since the late 80s: to graphically indicate status or importance of folders (and on Mac also files).
This particular program (normally) demands money for a feature that should be included in windows and is easily available for free (see earlier postings).
Personally I converted some nice Mac icons years ago to .ico files, that I use via standard windows interface.
Do I sound like an it-snob? Maybe, but still: why pay for such a simple feature? :-)

Awesome program, been using it for years now. Bought it since the reward to the authors was deserved. A little regret it never evolved or improved (making it easier to personalize the right click menu for instance).
I could live without the nagging 'this is only a sample of blah blah blah...), though.
Cheers

I have version 3.1 from an earlier giveaway. I opted to install this one into the same folder and there was no problem. In my view, the install routine is very well written. It not only found the folder where my previous version was installed but it also found my start menu entry (I move these to locations that better suit my taste).

Two things I should point out is that at first it may not be apparent the program is installed. All you need to do is right click on any folder to see the Folder Marker options. Second, the installation will ask you to reboot your computer. This is only for first time installs so the program can place itself in the right click menu. If you already have an earlier version there is no need to reboot.

If you would like to read a review by Ashraf, check out this link...

file:///C:/Program%20Files/Folder%20Marker/ashraf.htm

This review is for version 3.0.1.0 but it will give you a good idea of what you are dealing with here. Overall I like this program and find it useful when dealing with many folders. It is easy to do your work when the folders stand out from one another at a glance.

Over the years this publisher has contributed to this site many times so it is always nice to see their offerings here. Thank you to the GOTD team and of course to ArcticLine Software.

I have Folder Maker Home 3.0 from gotd from 4-26-2010! Use it frequently! With thousands of stuff to download - it helps find files easier! I used to mark every file with a color, but became kind of a pain to identify files, so I find it easier just to mark most frequent opened files only! Makes it easier to find them among thousands of files rarely opened! The version I have seens acceptable, wuldn't download new version - unless somebody points out an added bonus of doing so!

Down Loaded and Installed just Fine on My Win 7 64,

Doesn't seem to be running to much on resources so that is Good

Does just what it says I right clicked on the folder went to the icon for folder Marker clicked on the color I wanted the folder to be and it changed it so that is good

The only thing I dont like is that it would not let me change Colors for a text Document

I don't Know about Any free ones but this one seems Good Enough For Me

I think I am really going to like this now I can find the files I need Fast,

Thank You GAOD & ArcticLine 8=)

I downloaded FolderIco from GOTD a few weeks ago and very happy with it. I downloaded a free offer of Folder Maker a few years ago. It nags a lot for updates and there was no way to turn the auto update off. After spending many hours organizing and color coding my folder it finally updated itself to a Pro version and demanded payment and that was the end of it. Some of my folder were back to default and some were not. I like the program and it was very nice. You can change the color of one folder or a group or use your own icons to mark a folder. But I pass based on bad experience with this company.
Still Thanks to GOTD team for the offer.

Within 10 minutes of this giveaway going online there have been 15 "suggestions", in all likelihood mostly if not all from the same person if the idiosyncratic use of the English language is anything to go by.

Not only that but the top-rated suggestion has received 89 votes. That's eighty-nine votes in 10 minutes.

Thanks for the offer but I have no use for the program. Not worth the $24.00 asking price. There is little info about the software.Good luck some may find it acceptable for them.
Thanks for the offer.Have uninstalled it.
