This is a terrific, simple little tool for people like me who don't have photoshop or anything advanced, but who would like to do some small editing jobs on photos or clip art. Brilliant!

It looked pretty useful, but it didn't work on my computer. It would say "File Renamer Deluxe has encounter a problem and has to close. We are sorry....." I debugged it and I get "ECall Methods must be package into system modules.

Luckily there are plenty of freeware alternatives. I was looking into getting a new file manager anyway.

I should have over 2hrs left to register but it comes up with an error message on install:
Activation module failed to connect to giveawayoftheday.com. Software activation is not possible at the moment. Please try again later or check your firewall settings.

I turned off my firewall and tried again...and still the error so it must be on your end. I tried for about 15min now. Guess I'll just give up on it now and go with one of the freeware alternatives.

To Comment #41, Messenger:

Your welcome for the mini-review.

And, to address your Tag problem, if you look at the file name near the bottom of the program window, you will see some will be red while others will stay black. If they turn red, that means that the tag(s) are different from the information you want to put into them.

For example, lets say you download a lot of songs by the same artist. You edit the tags and misspell the name of the artist in the tags. If you go to the tag editor in this program and type in the artist name correctly, the file name should turn red. That means there is something different and it will be changed if you click "Rename." Unfortunately, this cannot tell you EXACTLY what is in the tag. That is one of the flaws in this program.

Hope this helps.

#48, that was a most useless and ignorant thing to say. Further more, what in the world difference does it make to a person's IQ whether or not they live with their mother, or any other relative for that matter? People who live with their mother, or other relative do so for a reason. With the current economic situation, it isn't hard to see why family members would be sticking together, sharing expenses, rather than supporting several different households.

This board is for comments, opinions, and whatnot. People express their opinions on the software, and some tell about always-free software, that others may want to check out for a later date if they lose the one GOTD gave away. Also, the 'thumbs up/down' rating system has already been discussed; it is still in use and everyone does with it as they will/won't - *I* don't mess with it, myself.

To #61 re laplink download. This website asks for personal information and a password which is visible in plain sight to all and sundry who want to view it. No security sign "pops" up to let the user know that the information they fill out in their form (which is mandatory to download the file) isn't going to be freely available to the www network. It is a nice offer but Ashampoo, for example, had a secure site when they requested personal information/passwords/addresses, etc. One has to wonder about Laplink's generosity in providing a free program when doing so possibly risks having identities, etc., revealed and/or stolen?

Dear Sir,
This is in reply to a gentleman who is complaining about complainers.
The point of talking about free alternative is although GOTD offers it free on one time basis, there is no free upgrade or if the software gets corrupted, you have to buy it to reinstall it whereas with free software there is no such hazle. That is why some of the audience are suggesting alternative to this one time free offer. They are not complaining so much about the software, but the constraints that go with this free offer. So please try to understand others point of view.
Thanks and stop "complaining"!

It's not often I rename batches of files, so I'll skip todays giveaway.

Oh, btw, windows XP has an inbuilt batch renaming function, albeit very simple: Mark several files, right-click and select "rename". They will be sequentally numbered after the new name.

#9 and #33:

Why complaining about people who spend their time to tell others about freeware alternatives?
Yeah its FREE, we get it, and GAOTD does a fine job, cudos to them!

But we can not install todays another day. Which is just how it is, its fine, its a nice chance for software developers to show off their software and maybe make some money and / or get known.

Main reason I go here is to see the discussion and freeware links, for software i can install whenever i want. The other reason is to see if there is something interesting or useful in the giveaway.

Now its just to wait for the answer complaining about why I complain about some who complains about those who post freeware alternatives...:p

Gepetto88 (#49) - thanks for the program reference. Not what I need, but could still be useful. I believe the issue is the path length. I only want to back up My Documents, but I believe the software creates a folder structure on the backup drive that includes the full path on my computer (i.e., including "Documents and Settings...") as well as probably some backup-software generated prefix. So the file name can be well under 260 characters (or whatever the limit is) but the resulting path length is what causes the problem. Still, shorter file names will help. The problem is that I sometimes save web pages, and the default filename for those is the Title. Those Titles can be plenty long (just look at the top of this window: that's a moderate example).

Although I show 7 hours and 9 minutes left, the program will not download. I've always felt it was somewhat "testy" to list competing programs when the software producer had the kindliness and GOTA the availability of the offering; but I'm grateful for the other suggestions. I'll use one of those.

Same goes for metioned freeware.
But more often than not the net result is that at the end of the day I got some nice piece of software, and quite a bit of knowledge.
Thanks GOTD

I too was looking for this. Parkerig gave me a script that will do just that. You can get it here. It will require you to sign up for 7-day free trial to access the script. The scdript works great!

I hope you're not suggesting deleting the "Xenocode" folder thinking this is the only software that uses this. Some developers use this to protect their source code when using .Net Framework. It helps to protect the software's .NET assembly from reverse engineering, tampering, de-compilation and helps to optimize the binaries. With out it the software may not work in run time. The folder may have been created by another program before hand which might not work again without it depending if the developer sets it that way. Now if some in here reads what you comment and if they delete it you just set in motion a mess for someone’s other .Net Frame based program that might be using Xenocode.

I tried it in order to edit some of the ID tags on some MP3's I have. It didn't list all the categories that are on the ID tag (i.e. composer, copyright, etc.) so I still have to go in and manually remove those. It also changed the genre to just a number instead of the category I chose. I am going to try out the Mp3tag freeware to see if that is any better. This program also has crashed each time I've tried to shut it down by clicking the red X in the upper right corner. I guess it kinda shuts down since it doesn't show up in Task Manager, but there is still a screen visible on the desktop and it shows in the taskbar until I right click on it. Then it goes away.

I am using WinXP Pro on a Dell laptop.

I actually bought this program a few months ago and I've found that for my purposes, I've gotten value for my money. I would definitely recommend this program to others, and have already done so.

I'm running it on Vista Home Premium without problem. I use it to rename audiobook chapters to make them easier to load and find on my MP3 player, and to batch rename and tag edit music files. I know that there's freeware out there that does the same jobs, but frankly, I tried them and I liked File Renamer Deluxe the best - that's why I actually bought the software just a couple of days after trialling it. Its operation is straight-forward: add the files, choose the filter(s) you want, make the changes to the files, hit the rename button and you're done.

Thanks, GAOTD, for making this useful program available to others.

I use a file rename. It does a fairly good job of renaming files. Lousy for renaming directories. I use WINAMP. when loading music to WINAMP, it messes up and lots errors I need to correct manually. Will this product handle this? I don't know. I am going to try this anyway and compare to existing file renamer.

An APPRECIATION of GotD. First, how many sites or magazines will publish truly negative comments on a software package? I know from personal experience that at least one of the two biggest magazines doesn't. AND it allows commenters to suggest alternatives!

Second, GotD is probably a one- or two-person operation. It can't test each of the software packages it offers. It's too busy finding them and and handling the setup and office business. It probably puts up a screen saver when it is low on more substantial offerings.

So, THANK YOU GotD for both your offerings and the truly appreciated way you handle people's comments.

P.S. For those, including myself, please only suggest alternatives if you have personally used them and have been happy with them.

To n.18 : Is it the PATH that is too long for your Maxtor or the actual length of the FILENAMEs.

To determine which FILES (ie. excluding the path) exceed any specific length, you can use this freeware.

Oh, the humanity...

#1 said, "Looks a great renamer, but.. I think PFrank is really better and is freeware."

Now people are simply going by the screenshot and description, and not actually TRYING the software, and suggesting a freeware alternative they think is better? Amazing...

Useless comment review:

1. "Doesn't sound like something I'd use, not my thing..." Who cares? Why don't you get in your car, drive to a restaurant you would never eat at, ask to see the manager, and tell him you don't like the TYPE of food they serve there, even though you've never tried it?

2. "But @#&#&@ software is free..." Yes, and so is the software here. "But it won't be free tomorrow..." Doesn't matter. It is free right now. You aren't paying for it. Have you even TRIED it?

3. "Thumbs down, I don't like the category." So you give a thumbs down to software you have NEVER tried? How about 100 people give a thumbs down to your favorite software because it doesn't fit THEM? Selfish, aren't you?

It's a shame that this comment area has become a magnet for so many selfish, self-absorbed misfits. Maybe they should require that commenters first prove that they don't still live at home with their mothers, and that will eliminate a lot of the ignorant comments.

Not bad if you need or want a file renaming utility, or another one, or just something to add to your toolbox. Takes up about 10 meg on disc, adds the program folder plus in Vista, 1 folder in the User's AppData Local folder called "Xenocode", & 1 folder in the Roaming folder - the reason for telling you that is uninstall doesn't remove them.

A file renaming program can come in handy, there are loads of these programs available, and millions of PC users get along just fine without one. Loading pics from your camera for example, common sense would suggest that if the pics are from taking the kids to the zoo, you put them in a folder named "Trip To Zoo". ;-) If you want to sort them, use the free FreshView. If you've got mp3s you grabbed without tags or mis-named or whatever, this might be nice, but many (most?) music related apps have more than enough tag handling features already, & many music files are already named & tagged before you download them.

After trying several renaming progs,
for general renaming I'd recommend ReNamer mentioned by #2,#7;

for renaming (and taging) media files
TigoTago (http://tigotago.com)

free tag editor with spreadsheet-like interface which supports
MP3, AVI, WAV, WMA, WMV, ASF.
Missing information incl. correct track names can be found
by means of freedb, discogs and musicbrainz support,
then file names (based e.g. on Author, album, track name)
can be created from tags.
On The other hand, tags can be created from file names.
Very useful for mass-renaming/taging of multimedia files.

Wow... I've been looking for something like this since I upgraded to Vista and for reasons passing my own understanding I *haven't* been able to locate any of the plethra of freeware that appears to be out there. Thank you GAOTD!

As to the 'it's good but there's freeware out there that will do it.' argument; if you're getting *this* for free today, doesn't that make *this* freeware... today?

If your freeware program does better than this one (or any *other* GAOTD offering) fine *say* that but don't dis it *just* because 'there is a freeware program out there that already *does* that.' That's like saying, "Well yeah, they'll *give* you a car for free but why should I bother, I can *already* walk to work for free!"

Thanks for convincing me to try this out. I wasn’t sure if I needed something like this. At many times find myself adding pictures from online and my camera, music and videos files building up file after file not putting proper names to them. Then when you get to wanting to rename them, you end up till wee hours of the morning doing so. After trying it out I should have gotten something like this sooner.

The only draw back to this was the tagging for video and music files. It doesn’t show what is already in the tag or edit it if it did show.
Ex: You just can’t change the title in the tag without having to ad all the other info when the other info may not needed to be changed. You have to keep minimizing the program to go and open the file’s folder just to lay the mouse arrow over the file to bring up the tag info. Going back and forth to check what you need to change or add, or write it all down on paper before hand, would be so much faster to see the existing tag in the program.

Good program for just changing file names and if you create your own music or videos then the simple tag editing could be of some use, but not helpful enough for existing media files.
I still say thanks to GAOTD and Kristanix Software an offer to try something that does work on catching up on cleaning some unorganized files.

As far as today's offering goes, if you are like me who seldom need to rename many files at a time, then this is a pretty nice utility. It has a nice set of options to handle almost all of your needs. The one feature that I think most people will find useful, it is the Windows Explorer context menu (right-click) integration. If I had to sum it up in a single sentence, I would say that "File Renamer Deluxe is a basic, but versatile utility for renaming many files in a single operation."

To all the people posting links to FREEWARE alternatives -> "Thank you!"

I appreciate the goods that GOTD delivers every day. I usually know right away if the day's offering is going to be of any use to me. However, there are times that I see a program that does something that I had never thought of or thought that I would use. Having a list of freeware alternatives in ADDITION to the GOAD "freeware" gives me the chance to compare the program with its competition. If it is better, I got one heck of a deal. If it isn't, then I might have found another program that I might not have known existed. So long as the posts on the main page remain relevant, we all win...regardless of whether we decide to use the GOTD offering or one of the freeware/open source alternatives mentioned.

So now my freeware alternatives -> If you need to organize/rename a large collection of music files, I suggest "MP3 Tag" (http://www.mp3tag.de/en/) or "Media Monkey" (http://www.mediamonkey.com/). For a file renaming utility with a HUGE set of options for the advanced user, I suggest "Bulk Rename Utility" (http://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk/Main_Intro.php).

Thanks GOTD and all those that contribute to the success. See you again tomorrow.

Sorry to hear about all the issues with the Mator One Touch. My first one died within two weeks. They replaced it with a new one (not a refurb) and it's working great. Norton Ghost was the first program that identified it as "about to fail" when it would not complete a successful clone. This replacement must either be a good one or I just got lucky! Good luck to you guys having all thes problems. Maybe it's time to use your warrantee.

Mostly about MaxRestore, which I haven't tried to use, so don't know whether problem is serious or not. I need to test Restore, I guess.

I don't believe it! FRD told me it needed to install .NET Framework. When I told it no, it didn't install .NET Framework but, instead of aborting, FRD continued to install itself! (And, of course, it wouldn't run since there was no .NET Framework.)

Clue: When a potential user says, "No" to installing a required component, they are aborting the installation!
