Very good software, much better than what windows 7 Home Premium offers, but you may wish to add more icons for the price your offering (still better than the freeware I've tried), otherwise this is great and I will definitely be using it! and recommending it.

Thank you ArticLine, and I don't need to but thanks once again GAOTD for all you do!

I did not have to "Like" the page; I am not sure how they could detect that anyway. I received my registration code in my email right away. Their codes are the world's longest, but their software works great. I already had Folder Marker and love it. I think this will be just as useful.

@9

Sorry please ELI5 - what is a file vs. a folder? I want FolderIco style capabilities. Thanks in advance.

michelle,#7, since this alters file icons, and has nothing to do with folders, i see no reason it shouldn't be compatible with folderico (the makers of file maker also make folder maker, and both work the same).

Download - no problem
Install - No Problem
Obtaining Registration Number - No problem
Changing a file - Problem - It doesn't work!

Using System 7. I tried a number of times and even rebooted computer. Still nothing. Just will not change the file in any way that I can see while using Windows Explorer.

wow, where are the usual commenters...i miss them! karl and giovanni both gone missing on the same day???

i downloaded this because i have their foldermarker program which i like and value a lot, and have had forever, therefore i trust them.

this file marker program works in the same way: being able to highlight various files for whatever reasons.

i got my registration code 'immediately'.

i do believe that this program has a lot of good potential...especially for those who like to keep organized. i feel bad that more people haven't commented and haven't given a thumbs up.

thank you.

Installed OK on XP, but on very first attempt to apply colour to a single MS Word file, it jumbled up all my desktop items, completely messing them up. Disappointed, as its older brother, Folder Marker Pro works fine. Uninstalled immediately.

downloaded and installed and registered, no problem on Win 7 home 64bit. Attempted to use on music files and photo files. All icons on desktop flashed for a few seconds, but no change to file icons. Uninstalled via reboot. waste of time.

Installed and registered without a problem - didn't leave a "like" on FB before I know if I like it or not. The the key code email was received quickly into my inbox. I was able to add icons to multiple files but two of them (.rtf files) were unable to be updated for some reason? But after updating the files icons, that icon was written onto all the icons in the program. I tried to do a rollback all changes thinking it would clear the program icons back to normal but it didn't work for me. I'm removing the program - seems buggy to me. Sorry because I really like special icons on file and folders.

Bum Reviews for this Useful Utility

There are several software titles, both paid and free, that change icons of FOLDERS. But I have not previously found a SAFE & STABLE software that EASILY & QUICKLY changes the icons of FILES.

I use custom icons to organize my folders. Of course, Windows allows one to do this, but the Windows' native process is very tedious. So, I purchased a product from yesterday's popular vendor, Teorex (InPaint), called FolderIco.

With FolderIco, I right-click on a FOLDER; and on the context menu, there is an item that quickly and easily allows me to change the FOLDER'S icon. (We have seen FolderIco on GOATD in the past.) HOWEVER, FolderIco does not change the icons for FILES.

Today's FileMarker.NET Pro does the same thing as FolderIco...except it changes the icons of FILES (not folders). That makes this software somewhat special....because it is the first icon changer FOR FILES that I found that isn't loaded with adware.

FileMarker installed nicely on both XP Pro SP3 x32 and W7 Pro SP1 x64.

I don't resent the developer's request for a Facebook Like, because a simple Like is a nice way to say thank you for a useful utility at no cost. I voluntarily Liked the Devo.

The ONLY NEGATIVE is the retail price of $35 for FolderMarker. The Developer is crazy if he seriously thinks people will pay that much for software that only changes icons of files. $9.95 to $14.95 is a more realistic price range.

@7 "Is File Marker Pro compatible with FolderIco [re: http://www.folderico.com/???"

It should be. Have used both Folder Marker Pro & FolderIco, installed on same computor. Don't recall any conflicts.

Does not work with .pdf files to me.

Also- if you change the icon of some file, and then copy the file to another computer without "File Marker Pro 1.0" installed- the file is with the old icon.

However thumbs up from me! Thanks!

@gpc111: No, this will not work. The tool can only change icons from files which will be open by windows (txt, doc etc.). By audio, film, photo, pdf or any other file which would be open by an external program (VLC in your example) it doesn´t change the icon.

#5 loto and #6 Karel D. You both seem to have the wrong idea about this giveaway. It's not intended to change the file type icon for all .doc files, for example. Think of it as a highlighter pen for marking individual files that are important.
Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work when you have the file types associated with non-standard programs. I use PDF-Xchange to open .pdf files rather than Adobe Acrobat and File Marker Pro (or FileMarker.NET, the developer uses both) didn't change the icons. The same happened with .doc files associated with Softmaker Office.

Does this programme disable the open and closed folder view? If it does then it solves the problem of differentiating folders with different content at the cost of making it difficult to see which folder is open,

Installed on Win7 system. Instead of marking a txt file all of the icons in the File Marker window were changed. This application has some bugs to be worked out.

I installed this on the latest version of Windows 8 and it registered fine but doesn't work at all. It did n't even include the right click context menu. I even rebooted. It's not working.

No fuzz - installed ok. And installed it is!
But - nothing happens to my files.
The app is not showing when I right-click, either...

To loto
- there is an additional mode for multiple files - look under Mode... single or multiple

Installed and registered without problems on a WIn 8.1 Pro 64 bit system.

A super safe registration code. On the heavy side. Try to enter by hand. Be sure to enter only the code itself, otherwise it will not register. No —begin— ! And disable the update check.

A (Russian Ukraina - ArcticLine Software) company without name and address,

We had had recently the Folder Marker Home 4.2 from this company.

If you have installed that, you can color the folder icon to green and with the today's software the files in the green folder to red and yellow or vice versa.

The program is mainly handled by the right click menu. You select a file, click and change the visible attributes.

The first try to mark a files as important ends with an error message :

C:\Users\GAOTD\NewFiles\FileMarkerPro10\Setup.exe
The files with ".exe" extension can't be customized.
Please select another file

Okay, no .exe files...

Ooops! The second try end with the same error message :

C:\Users\Office\Downloads\FileMarkerPro10\Setup.gcd
File type ".gcd" is not registered.
FileMarker.NET can't change icon of the unregistered file type.
Please select another file

Okay, no unregistered file types either...

The third attempt to mark the readme.txt file as important does not change the .txt mark. Surely an admission problem.

The task manager shows, that I have now 4 (FOUR!) FolderMarker.Net processes running. What a software! I killed the four running processes.

I tried to mark a .PDF with "yellow" -> fail!

Unfinished software - but they claim :

NO malware, NO spyware
virus FREE, 100% TESTED
It may be tested 100% for virus free, but not for functioning.

Uninstalled via reboot. I am not the Alpha Tester of ArcticLine software.

Downloaded and installed the program. But this can apply changes only on a single for multiple files, i was hoping selecting few files (namely dox) present in my D: would also effect other files present all over my HDD, but it doesn't do that way and choosing files and marking is a tiring work. I like the idea, but not too much.

Will uninstall this, but thank you GAOTD team who brought this kind of software everyday.

Try this :
File Marker (Portable)
You can use your own images to mark your files

http://sourceforge.net/projects/filemarkerporta/files/latest/download?source=files

BTW you don`t need to like anyone to get the serial for the GOTD nor the open source ...

Installed, works just fine, it does what it says.

Facebook like is NOT mandatory. They kindly ask you to. I didn't hit the link and I got the registration code. Afterwards I liked them on FB just because they didn't force me to. Just my way of sayng thanks.

Installed, (after a bit of fun - Antivirus detected something in the GOTD installer- AGAIN) had to disable AV, registered. Didn't hit the "like" for facebook, but did fill out name and live.com email address. Code arrived within a few seconds. Found it in the spam folder.

changed a couple of files, did what it claimed.

To register this software you are asked to visit this page...

http://filemarker.net/gaotd.php

There you are asked to "like" their Facebook page and supply your name and address. I'm not about to "like" their or any other publisher's Facebook page so I skipped this step. I supplied my name and first a Hotmail email address and then a Yahoo email address. Neither has received anything in either my inbox or spam folder. If Facebook is a requirement I will pass and vote this down with the largest thumb possible.

This looks to work the same way their Folder Marker program does except for files. I am interested in this because I have all of my media files associated with VLC player. It would be nice to have a quick and easy way to distinguish an MP3 from an MP4 or an FLV, etc.

I will just have to wait and see what others have found on this. Also will look forward to the alternatives. Thank you GOTD team for all that you do for us.
