Ok, it seems that a lot of newer users are visiting here. (Which is good, I guess this site is getting some publicity and attracting a lot of new visitors.) But having noticed that, maybe some helpful background information might be useful here:

RSSFeeds are NEWS Headlines.

RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication"

"Syndication" is when reporters at one place write news articles and then send them out to a lot of other places for --> publication. Like the API or Reuters sends their articles out to all the newspapers.

There are TWO sides to it. 1. The people who are generating the news articles (reporters) and 2. The people who want to READ the articles (READERS).

There are programs for READING the RSS News Feeds. THIS IS NOT ONE OF THEM. This program is for CREATING the newsfeeds. In other words, this program is for the "REPORTER". It's for people who own a web site already and have content posted on their website, and who want to send links to their pages out to all kinds of other sites like Digg and del.icio.us and Google and to their readers. This Giveaway today is for webmasters. To publish the news, Not to Read the news.

If you just want to READ the news, the company that makes This program here ALSO makes a news READER program too. SO you can go to their site and get that program. Or, you could use the reader from www.rssreader.com (free) or some people like one called "feed demon" (not free). You decide.

The REASON why a webmaster would WANT to use this RSS feed *creator* is because they can get publicity and visitors to come to their site. And if they have information that they feel is important, they can get it published out there all over the net, on Google, Yahoo, Bloglines, Digg, del.icio.us, boingboing, and also keep their site interesting, and keep the visitors coming.

The REASON why a user would WANT to use an RSS READER program rather than just going to sites, is because it would take HOURS and be extremely tedious to type in and go visit hundreds of individual news websites and then be clicking around trying to find subjects that you are interested in. Waiting for the pages to load, having popup ads come up. Waiting for pictures and graphics and all kinds of unwanted things. With an RSS reader, you can just get the subject line (headlines) and if you are interested THEN you click it to visit the site.

Also, instead of having to poke through all kinds of subjects that you don't care about, lets say you don't like POLITICS, all the front pages of news sites are going to have that 1st. Maybe you like techie stuff and Science instead. You can set your rss READER program to collect ONLY news about computer gadgets and astronomy. Or whatever it is you like. It's like a personalized newspaper, just for you. You can set it to just get the news headlines from the sites you like. And you can have them alert you as soon as it happens like a little 'tickertape' flashing marquis, like the scroller you see at the bottom of some TV news stations.

Even this Giveaway of the Day website uses RSS. Scroll up to the top of this page and go look at the sidebar on the right side where it says: "Subscribe to Our Feeds" This GiveAwayoftheDay website is sending out a list of each new software program that they are offering every day. This gets the word out, people like you can see it, and if you are interested, then you can come here and download it. :)

So whether you are a webmaster, or just a reader, RSS is pretty useful.

#35 (zipzap) - Because if you're following a lot of sites, you may not want to read the content after seeing the title of the post (You may already know that it isn't something you're interested in.). Also, RSS feeds are a lot slimmer (less data, that is) so they load much faster, which makes it easier to load a lot of them. Also, you're not restricted by the site's lack of a good search engine (only your feed reader's), or it's lack of speed (one RSS feed would load (more or less) at the same speed as one page on that site, so if it's going really slow, you can still access the main content), or it's lack of filtering (Many RSS readers can filter out posts by various criteria such as the category of the posting.). And finally, it's a lot easier to go through post by post in an RSS/news reader than it is on a site (or MULTIPLE sites for that matter!).

Really, it's a matter of convenience.

I think I understand what RSS is more-or-less, but I don't see the point of it. What's the advantage of using a special client to read "headlines" of other websites? Why not just go to those websites to read them?

Please help me understand this.

#30 What programs did you use to teach yourself web design. I have a couple of friends who want me to design a web site. A simple one. One sells home baked goods. One runs a sober living house. He just started. I'm a retired secretary/puppeteer. I'm fairly competent with computers software and hardware, but didn't know what an RSS feed was either. Please give me some freeware or affordable program options for website construction and hosting. Thank you, GOTD team and community.

The current program with RSS feeds will probably have me spending more time on my computer than I already do. Anybody have any suggestions of favorite feeds?

Have you all heard of www.Craigslist.org (you have to select your own state and city for info relevant to your area).

ARJAN, are you using a Texas Instruments calculator for school instruction??

Try temporarily turning off that calculator school software while you reg these programs.

That might help you. :)

I am completely self-taught at web site design, so I always appreciate the opportunity to learn something new *for free*! I've no idea how to use this, or even what it is exactly, but, at a glance, the instructions look relatively simple and straightforward, so I'm sure I will find someway to incorporate it into my little community news and history site. Perhaps a *This Day in Tennessee History* feed? Thanks, Gotd, for helping me continue to learn.

Comment by PissedOff — January 18, 2007 @ 6:09 am"

Make sure when you copy & paste the code that you didn't get perhaps a little character at the front or on the end of it. Sometimes that can happen when one swipes something with ones mouse to select it. Or could be a return/linefeed on the end. Those are invisible so sometimes it can sneak in there and you don't realize it.

Mine went Successfully.

#5 SERAFIN WROTE: "Well, in my opinion: useless programm! Hope that other will need it.
Comment by Serafin — January 18, 2007 @ 4:22 am "

Maybe you could say *WHY* you thought it was useless. Did you find something WRONG with the program? Like a bug, or error, or did it not function?

Or is it just that you don't have a website and don't publish newsfeeds so it's just that you don't need it. Like Michael Jordan needs a comb.

If you post that the program is 'useless' it sounds like you don't like it or it didn't work or something. Maybe you could post a little more and help everyone learn why you thought so.

#23 JOE WROTE: what’s an RSS feed?
Comment by Joe — January 18, 2007 @ 10:17 am

"What's an RSS FEED?
An XML format for sharing content among different Web sites such as news items.

How does it work?
A Web site can allow other sites to publish some of its content by creating an RSS document and registers the document with an RSS publisher. A web publisher can post a link to the rss feed so users can read the distributed content on his/her site."

That text above is right in the program. If you download it, that's the 1st thing that comes up. :)

Or in my words--> RSS feeds are NEWS headlines.

So when do the good titles that were bragged about a while back start showing up? I could write this app in a few hours.

About all I've seen here are cheesy apps no-one has ever heard of. Get something known, like ACDSee, WinRAR, or other titles people have actually heard of and used.

@10 the reg key is displayed before installation.

Copy it to note pad and make sure they're the same.

I just downloaded from the authors site the version for reg key.

I installed that and then under help entered key from tool bar.

Works fine.

Nice to see key before installation, hope thats a new thing as I don't like my registry edited by a third party.

Hope thats to stay please!

Thanks for a useful tool GoTD team. Nice one. Thanks also for the Email re someone using my name, possibly another Stephen, lol. Anyway following the apology below I'll try to keep my comments strictly to the point.

Hey anonymous; re the other day....sorry...I am angry at the world at the mo...someone drove into the back of me at speed while I was cycling to work. Now I'm disabled, due to four vertebra being destroyed. I'm still fighting for compensation as the insurance companies know this is going to cost them; and my whole world has changed because of the accident. I'll try to be my normal laid back self from now on, which shouldn't be hard because I have to take morphine daily. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, so sorry..

Stephen
