It seems that there are many methods to extract music from dvd, I have came across one from youtube:

Take for example the DVD from 1962's "The Music Man"...

..the scene with the song 'Shapoopie' IS longer/better
than the original Warner Bros soundtrack on CD -

Granted you'll hear some sound effects surrounding/within
the selected songs in films, but I truly enjoy just listening
to the stereo music on a file, not having to insert a DVD to
watch the scenes

I watched very carefully for a way to disable the auto home page reset as I installed this - I did not see any way to not have my home page reset. Thankfully Spybot S&D caught it and let me refuse the change.

Thank you for the program, since I have recently been listening to videos on my iPod as I work or walk, and now the battery can last much longer without having to run the video as well as the audio. Please, however, let people opt out of the home page change. Thank you.

And I'm not talking about the GOTD bookmarks/favorites dialog at the end of installing all GOTD apps. This is done by Extra's part of the install.

Browser tampering without asking is lame!

(p.s., I've listened to the soundtrack of Aliens and 13th Warrior on long drives, late at night to keep me awake!)

Wow, I've never before given a negative comment. This is my first, with caveats: Maybe it only pertains to my configuration; maybe it's user error.

1. Application shut down (disappeared) during the first minute of trying to convert "The Sound of Music." I heard the DVD drive working for about 30 seconds, then poof! Maybe it's a DRM problem? Maybe it didn't like that I blanked out the "Author" box?

2. Help is, well, approximate.
2a. There's a question mark "?" that has rollover text "Get local help," but it goes out to the internet (dvdcopyrip.com).
2b. There's a dollar sign "?" that has no rollover text and goes to the same page.
2c. When you drill down on the page to "Step by Step Guide," you get the directions for the latest version, with a different GUI.

3. Select WAV and it displays MP3 settings. What will happen? Guess I'll just try it ...

4. How to start? Newer version has "Load..." button per website directions. No such button on 6.07. Click, click, Ah, it's the "+" button...

That's it, it whirs, it ends. OK, might be my fault, DRM's fault, my computer's fault. But just too many chinks in the armor, not counting hijacking the IE home page.

I won't give it a thumbs down as I can't say it won't be useful to someone else (Ashraf got it to work converting to MP3.) But gah, I hope GiveawayOfTheDay can get its money back on this one, if it's really as crappy as it seems to be to me: more Alpha than Beta quality. They actually sold this version?!

I can't imagine the uninstall works properly either. Shoulda set a restore point.

the developer ought to be decent enough of a human being now, to tell us HOW DO I GET MY IE TO LET ME CHANGE MY HOMEPAGE BACK TO WHERE I WANT IT TO BE? This malware changed my homepage and GREYED OUT ALL THE CONTROLS SO I CANNOT CHANGE IT BACK TO WHERE I WANT IT. This is wrong, it's malicious and if there's a shred of decency in this developer, they will tell me how to undo the damage this app has done.

Not only that, this damn thing fixed it so that all the options to change my homepage back are all greyed out!!!!!!

This is worse than a lot of browser hijacker programs do, sabotaging my IE options so I cannot change my homepage back to where I want it....its MY COMPUTER AND I SHOULD BE ABLE TO CHOOSE MY OWN HOMEPAGE, not have it sabotaged by a hijacker this way...sad, Extra was a software company I thought was reasonably reputable, but now it goes in a list of software sources of malicious behaviors that I keep for when I'm on security forums.

I keep my toolbar at the top of my desktop because I have weather information running at the bottom and I get so sick of all this software that opens at the top of the desktop with part of its interface hidden under my toolbar!

I either have to stop everything and shrink the toolbar to access the program's main controls amd then put toolbar back again or else kill the program through task manager.

This app also tries to hijack your homepage to their own software page, which is a malicious behavior and the main reason why I gave this app a thumbs down....why would any reputable software developer include a homepage hijacker in their programs???

All I can say is that if you were lucky enough to get the giveaway of Wondershare DVD ripper platinum, use that instead. This program was so crappy I've already unistalled it and used the Wondershare instead. Every attempt at ripping a 5.1 audio dvd gave me very distorted results. Worked perfectly with the Wondershare and sounded great in my car.

Rude, trashy attempt at a homepage jack. This software company has been added to my "never try anything else by them again" category.
The problem is that this is not the only company offering software here that does this. Star Burn also tries it. Their added to that same list. Really GOTD, this is not nice at all. You should know about this & give your visitors a fair warning at least. See ya, Extra Software, Inc!

This is a simple program. Not too extravagant, pretty straight forward.

The thing i like about it is that it can read VOB files from movies you might have backed up.

Clean interface, you will be ripping audio from movies in less than a minute. I will be installing on several PC's.

Very nice, TY GOTD.

The only use I could imagine for this software is ripping audio from music DVD videos and concerts.
Extracting audio from DVD movie can be useful, but if you want just the songs from that movie, it's easier to find them on some P2P site.

#33: "...There are plenty of rippers out there, some free ones, which will rip the video files to a folder for you."

Generally what you'll get is a duplicate of the DVD on your hdd, hopefully minus any DRM.

"Then, it’s your job to find the audio file in a video file.

Normally select the largest set of similarly numbered VOB files -- you can Often drag a VOB file into a player like PowerDVD to audition it. Several apps will demux the video &/or audio &/or subs from the VOB file set -- check out PGCDemux -- but you'll have to audition or figure out which track you want if as usual there are a few.

"I would think that you would have to rip the whole audio track first..."

AC3 files are more or less complete affairs, so you could either record playback of a portion, or else strip out the entire file. Because they're based on packets, there are a few apps that will do cut edits, insert/remove opening silences etc, but generally they're converted to wav & then (after optional editing) encoded to MP3. [The wav conversion may happen behind the scenes so you don't see it]

"Audacity will do the audio extraction anyway, you could do that in one operation."

In my experience Audacity will *appear* to open AC3 files, but you get just a short portion of what looks like garbage. You can use Graphedit & whatever playback decoders & write the results to file -- BeSweet was probably the 1st free-ware decoder -- ffmpeg includes AC3 decoding now, & is present in today's GOTD as well as eac3to. Most audio &/or video editing apps refuse to handle AC3 because of DRM concerns, plus it's a distribution format, not intended for re-use or editing.

Extra DVD to Audio MP3 Ripper as the name implies, turns a DVD's audio tracks into MP3s. It does this using apparently older versions of ffmpeg & Lame, both in the program's 16 MB folder. If there's a problem, it concerns the nature of the 5.1 AC3 audio normally used on DVDs...

Many (most?) DVDs use the same basic mix used in the theaters where the movie was originally shown. This mixing info is included in the AC3 itself. Normally players will compensate, & may offer several mixing (& downmixing) options, so you don't have too much surround & too little dialog volume, along with a very large dynamic range [from extremely quiet, almost whispers to very, very loud FX or music]. Many people find that they need to use software that compresses the audio's dynamic range [this is not compression to make it smaller, but to reduce the difference between loud & quiet], increases the volume of the dialog [often the center channel], & otherwise blends everything into a stereo mix that may optionally include the old Dolby Surround data (if you have equipment that can use it).

You can find out more, along with software at videohelp.com & doom9.org. The original method uses Graphedit (free from Microsoft) along with PowerDVD's mixing filters & effects. Popular alternatives include various ft ends for BeSweet & eac3to, often along with apps like PGCDemux to strip the AC3 audio out of the DVD. IMHO converting just the DVD audio isn't nearly as popular as converting the entire DVD, so there isn't very much direct competition to today's GOTD. Otherwise many of the prior GOTD rippers include an audio MP3 choice in their profiles.

Things I like:
- Straightforward and easy interface

Things I didn't like:
- the combo boxes are too dark, very difficult to read the options
- the program is intended to save mp3 files but there are very few mp3 related options (e.g. choosing CBR/VBR/ABR encoding, choosing between stereo/joint-stereo modes)
- the mp3 encoder is LAME 3.97 beta (LAME 3.97 and 3.98 release vesions have already been released).
- there's no offline help

Forgot to add that the developer might want to consider compressing their executable (dvd2mp3.exe). Using UPX I was able to successfully compress it from 4.55mb to 472 KB. I was not successful trying to shrink the dll files as the programme stopped operating correctly (I didn't check all compression levels however).

Anyway could save a little installation space ;-)

To #24

When installing the setup dialogue says that it's version 6.07 but it is in fact the same as the download from the developers website which is version 6.5 (when actually running the programme it says it's 6.5 at the top of the main window) - I tried them both and all installation files are the same exact size with the exception of the unins000.dat file.

I'm not sure why they changed the text of the setup dialogue other than to perhaps track warez downloads?

My Testing.

On my laptop - WinXP SP2 all critical hotfixes, 1.6 Cetrino 512mb RAM (yes 512mb - shocking!)

Extra DVD to Audio MP3 Ripper is noticably slower than Wondershare DVD Ripper given away here just last week. A 4 minute section of audio took just 2 minutes using Wondershare and almost 4 minutes using Extra DVD to Audio MP3 Ripper.

I found CPU usage to be high averaging 70% during the RIP/Convert for the 4 minute audio segment (I monitor using Process Explorer and set the priority class to Normal rather than this softwares default which is Below Normal - I also monitored at Below Normal and did not notice any significant difference).

RAM usage seemed to run around 125mb (again while Ripping/Converting).

mp3 output quality is good as it uses the Lame 3.97 codec (as does Wondershare also).

Unfortunately mp3 encoding is limited to constant bitrates (no VBR support - Wondershare shares this limitation as well). My work around would be to rip as a WAV and then use an alternative encoder.

I don't like not being able to maximise the main window and as already pointed out the background of the text fields is too dark.

With the Wondershare ripper you can right click the check/uncheck all chapters via dropdown menu but Extra DVD to Audio requires manual selection of each one...

I think more developement is needed as well as additional options if this were to wow me at all, but even if additions and fine tuning were implemented it's very pricey for what it does.

Just my dime,

Regards and thanks GAOTD!

#21--I wish I had the hearing I used to have! I used to be able to hear the bottom end of a bat's sonar. Even with hearing protection, working in manufacturing has taken its toll. I can still hear OK, but nothing like before. MP3s sound OK to me. I doubt I would have liked them before. Some of the newer CDs have compressed the dynamic range of their content and many are wanting to go back to the vinyl albums for that reason. But many with good hearing don't notice that dynamic range compression.

For those who mentioned the hijacking of the home page: I agree. It does. It shouldn't. The developer should change this. Why in the world would I want a software's web site to be my home page??? Why not instead simply open the page so I can read about their software?

And while I doubt that anyone would want to make their web site their home page, they could offer an opt-in check box (an opt-out would be rude in my opinion) to allow the software to make it my home page.

I don't use Internet Explorer for much, but I did think it was rude and poor marketing for this developer to do this. It puts it in the realm of spyware and junkware. Please, if the developer is reading this, make this one change. What I didn't like is that it changed my original home page that I used to get to my computer manufacturer's web site and I had to find the history list, go to that page, then make it my home page again. Not convenient at all.

For those who mentioned that you need another program to rip the video files first, I haven't tested this yet, but you are probably right, unless this can decrypt the encryption on commercial DVDs. There are plenty of rippers out there, some free ones, which will rip the video files to a folder for you. Then, it's your job to find the audio file in a video file. I would think that you would have to rip the whole audio track first with this program to create an MP3 file then use a program like Audacity to cut the part out that you want to keep. But if, as someone else claimed, Audacity will do the audio extraction anyway, you could do that in one operation.

NOTE TO DEVELOPER!!! PLEASE NOTE THAT CHANGING THE HOME PAGE OF ANY BROWSER WITHOUT EXPRESS CONSENT OF THE USER IS CONSIDERED RUDE AND PUTS YOUR SOFTWARE IN THE CATEGORY OF JUNKWARE AND SPYWARE. PLEASE ADD AN OPT-IN CHECK BOX IF YOU REALLY THINK THAT SOMEONE OUT THERE WILL WANT YOUR WEB SITE TO BE THEIR HOME PAGE!!! (Opt-out is also considered to be rude by most of us since it takes advantage of those who have reading problems and might stick them with your home page overwriting an important one for them.)

Well I was going to give it a try until I read where it hijacks your home page. Although it is simple enough to get it back, and with my firefox it couldnt happen anyway. BUT, knowing that to start with I will not download or install it because in my opinion, any software that thinks it is so great, or for whatever reason hijacks your home page should be as illeagle for them to do as us stealing software, music and videos. That includes putting in those useless search toolbars and other crap.

#6 -- There is some music that is ONLY on a DVD soundtrack and that isn't available for purchase. The movie K-9 had a song called Iko Iko performed by Amy Holland. None of her albums have the song on it, and the movie soundtrack isn't available. I have the song now thanks to a trial version of a DVD to MP3 ripper. That's ONE reason someone might use this tool.
