Doesn't work. Tried to convert a movie, gives an Sorry, unrecoverable error. Worked zero (0) percent of the time on the movie I tried (a store bought copy of Taken. Makes you waste your time cause it worked til about 60% complete. Happy converting my a**!

Sweet. Can't really complain about the specs, as this is free, and since when did bootlegging need to be PROFESSIONAL? This program works just fine, yeah it's kinda slow but it works and again, it was FREE.

Thumbs up from me. Seems to work as described, easy to use (although as has been mentioned there aren't many options), and the price is right! ;)

Thanks GAOTD - Freeware rippers are not as easy to come by as some other program types, and I appreciate being able to get this one free. I'm still hoping to find one that really clicks with me, and the offerings here are a bonus, a good chance to learn what I like and what I need.

To all the people that bitch and moan about what is offered, please remember that it's no small thing to convince companies to give away full versions - if you want something else how about contacting the company yourself and suggesting they offer it free here?

Another DVD Ripper it claims. Huh? I'm with #9, stay away from them. Star Burn so nearly killed my computer with their product.

#15 Advanced System Protector is another scam product. Get yourself Advanced System Care from IOBIT. Notice the name is almost the same.

#16. Yep, why not.

If you want to do the illegal thing...OMG did I say that...get yourself a copy of DVDFab6. 30days free trial but you can still use it afterwards for free. And I swear by this product. You just need one more product to convert it for DVD burning. But then I would be giving away trade secrets.

And yes it works with VISTA.

@#30 Junior, What that mess represents is technical information to track down *why* this program died on your computer. The data in that report might assist the programmers at Extra in correcting the problem, but most users however find those reports useless - mainly because those reports reference data unavailable to us, the meaning of the program's internals.

What can be found from what you copied is that when the program died, the program was attempting to use "ctvorbis.dll". The offset value is similar to a line number - it is where Windows noticed the problem.

I had tested Extra DVD Ripper Express and Extra DVD Ripper Profession, all worked great. They are two different products and the most obvious difference is that Extra DVD Ripper Profession can choose movie titles and Extra DVD Ripper Express no titles but run faster than pro version.
They have their own respective advantages:
Extra DVD Ripper Express, not only a ripper tool but also as a movie player. Compare with all the ripper tools which I used, it ripps the fastest.
Extra DVD Ripper Profession, small body but has strong function. It provides titles choose and professional message box. It really easy used and occupy a small space.

Thanks GAOTD once again. Also thanks Extra company which always provides so good products. Hope all of you would more and more better. Look forward to more great software from Extra company.

Following #7's advice about a possible scam I went to their site and looked at all the unlinked award references. Then I went to a number of these award sites and I couldn't even find any reference to any Extra product at all.

Make your own conclusion. lol

I went to their homepage to read up about the company and saw the list of awards, but none of the award icons have a link that lets you confirm they really got these awards. Also their tech support has a hotmail address. Come now, one would think a company with so many products and so many awards could at least afford an email address.

I am giving up on this one, XP Pro SP3 recently clean installed, installation went fine no problems at all. But when trying to copy it keeps crashing like its coming up with an error code & needs to shut down. I tried reinstalling same deal no go. Uninstalled it!

To the Extra Software team, guys i feel that some of its code needs a little more work. It just wont happen for me, this is the only program that has thrown up a red flag on my pc since my fresh install of XP.

Everything else is running fine so i can only conclude that Extra DVD ripper Pro still has a few bugs.

Thank you :)

Ripping of copyrighted material is not always illegal. It is now common practice to allow the purchaser of the copyrighted material to make what is usually referred to as one "archival" copy for your own use. The intent of this license is to allow you to replace your purchase in case you leave it on the dashboard, scratch it beyond repair, etc.

I don't say it is a bad program but the user interface makes me unsatisfied, it is a little bit weird and not familiar.
As a software developer I know creating an easy-to-use UI is not so easy but not impossible. Try to compare the program with other similar products on the market and try to "steal" the best things from them (e.g. step-by-step wizards) and try to avoid their mistakes. And finally, try to make quality product not just money. :)
I hope this information would be useful for the developers.

I decided to check the awards out for myself:

1. On 5cup.com I cannot find reference to Extra DVD Ripper on their "Most Popular" or "5Cup Picks".
Also the 5 cups are a rating not an award.

2. On Maxxdownload.com I cannot find reference to Extra DVD Ripper on their "Top Downloads" or "Featured" or "New programs.
Also the 5 stars are a rating not an award.

3. On ProgramURL.com I cannot find reference to Extra DVD Ripper on their "Top Downloads" or "Featured" or "New programs.
Also the 5 stars are a rating not an award.

4. On brothersoft.com I found an editor's award. http://www.brothersoft.com/extra-dvd-ripper-express-71451.html

On March 8, they already gave away Extra DVD Ripper Express combined with Extra DVD Copy. I use the Extra DVD copy and it works well. However, I have never used Extra DVD Ripper Express. I will not download the program offered today because I guess Extra DVD Ripper express is probably similar to this one just in case I ever need it. Also, so far, the reviews have not been very favorable which makes me not want to waste my time downloading this program if there is NO DVD copy program attached.

Extra DVD Ripper Pro uses ffmpeg, Xvid, & Lame to convert a DVD's mpg2 video & AC3 audio to profiles for iPod, Xvid AVI (listed as DivX), VCD SVCD (mpg1 & 2), PSP, 3GP, & Pocket PC. It's probably the easiest program of this type I've seen -- you select your source, either on a disc or in a folder on your hdd, click the settings button, & click the type of video from the choices on top. You can select the different titles on a DVD, and the audio & sub tracks to use. A drop down menu for Profile Settings lets you choose frame size & bitrate. Additional drop down menus *optionally* let you choose other frames sizes, fps, separate audio & video bit rates, Aspect Ratio, & Audio Sample, but you don't have to -- you can just go with your first choice under Profile Settings.

What you don't see are the more complicated settings & options you can run into when converting video, re-encoding it with Xvid. Depending on what you're after, that's either a big plus or a minus. There are plenty of apps that'll let you use Xvid [see videohelp.com & doom9.org], & most of the free ones have all sorts of options -- the question is whether you want to learn how to fiddle with all that or click on the fewest buttons possible.

To give a brief idea: From a more purest standpoint offering max control, you can use DGIndex on the title's VOB files, then Graphedit with PowerDVD filters to convert the AC3 to wav. The wav file would go into your audio editor for dithered conversion to 44.1 & encoding to MP3 or whatever. You'd make an avs script file for AviSynth to feed your original mpg2 via DGIndex's index file to Virtual Dub, where you'd add your audio, crop, resize, optionally filter, optionally set end points, & configure Xvid, which itself can get involved. Or you can use one of the many front ends available that do most of that for you, but, usually need you to configure everything for every step of the way.

When you consider all that, Extra DVD Ripper Pro can be pretty attractive, what with only a few mouse clicks needed... even more so if you're converting video to a small frame size where any quality difference is frankly pretty hard to see.

#15: "#11 Ripping, when used on any copyrights product other than your own, in the strictest term, I think are all illegal. If such, all Rippers will be out of business."

The only recent American ripper AFAIK was released by Real, & promptly pulled off the market as Hollywood took them to court. OTOH for years DVD players were made/sold without paying license fees due, simply because the manufacturers weren't/aren't located where they can be taken to court. I would guess the same could be said about Ripping software available -- I mean it's not like you can grab it off the shelf at the nearest electronics store.

Just a small note regarding the awards.

These awards are cool when your software gets them, and as a software vendor you want to publish them on your site because they do mean something to users who know the sites in question.

But some anti-phishing software solutions will mark your site a dangerous if you link to too many of these sites. It's simply not worth it. So the links are usually removed.

It's easy to check, though. Just look for the software at the site that gave the award and see if it's there.

Download: Fine, no problem as always.
Installation: On my XP SP3 updated PC, no problem at all.
Registration: No issues too.

Feature and usage: Unfortunately it does not deserve anything but thumbs down. Now this tool incorporates two features: Ripping+Converting. For ripping there is nothing which can beat DVD Decrypter+DVD43 or DVDFab HD Decrypter, all these are free. And for converting+ripping, there is nothing better than Handbrake. Again its a free tool with loads of features, no issues with any PMPs, the only thing that Handbrake does not do is ripping your DVD to HDD (VIDEO_TS folder), but for that you have the first three tools I mentioned.

Now for quality, the conversion quality is not good. There is no multipass. And there is hardly any feature available which can be termed as professional feature.

Just installed to test and now I have uninstalled it.

Not recommended.

Installs quickly, with no glitches (XP3). I chose this because it will rip to SVCD and VCD and did not see any free rippers that did this. Clean GUI and reasonably intuitive. It's a keeper; thanks GAOTD

One question: What's with all the DVD rippers lately?

Myself, I prefer to use either DVD Decrypter or SmartRipper with AutoGK or avi.NET. And the Xvid codec. Pretty good quality, though the files can get big sometimes.

I'm not affected by IE homepage jacks because I use Firefox. :-)

#9 Hijack you homepage? Well I did not experience this maybe because I have installed Advanced System Protector, also from GOTD.

#7 the Award listed did not work as link, yes, but so is #4 suggestion of the ripper that works perfectly with Windows 7, the Award below their page are not also clickable. Maybe, next time, when I see these awards, I have to try it to see if it is clickable.

#11 Ripping, when used on any copyrights product other than your own, in the strictest term, I think are all illegal. If such, all Rippers will be out of business.

We are overfed with Rippers by GOTD. Find it hard to swallow further any of these rippers.

MPEG Streamclip is good too, permanently free, with no limitations. (Doesn’t support Vista though)

"MPEG Streamclip is a powerful high-quality video converter, player, editor for MPEG, QuickTime, transport streams, iPod. And now it is a DivX editor and encoding machine, and even a movie downloader"

Google it or find more details and a download link from the developer website here:

This is a small program, with a small interface.
I downloaded, and installed with no problem. There are seven (7) options for the ripped files-from Setting button.
Not sure if this program can remove some latest protection features (it's too late to test now). There are some Korean writings; perhaps it's a product from Asia?

If I had this software, would you pay me to convert your DVD's?
Don't think so!
Are they saying its commercial software..if so it breaches this sites terms of use.
Commercial DVD ripping would I think be illegal!

Today's games include a whole bunch of unusual and intriguing indie games from a developer called Iteration games (14 games in total). I've also posted Thursday's games which include 2D and 3D breakout clones called Clash Ball and Smash Set; one of which has a levels editor, plus a well made pong clone called Squish Ball and a brilliant 3D action platformer called Atmosphir that also comes with an easy to use levels editor.
