re #74. I totally agree with you, I wish Ahraf would come back. His knowledge and insight are missed. Having tried this program on XP sp2 with no installation problems, I have decided to delete it and keep using DVD shrink (which as someone else said, IS NOT JUST for dealing with copy protected disks).

To answer your question, "What other program supports the SAME VIDEO formats?"

Most others support at LEAST the ones I mentioned.

Take a look at post #10.

For example DVD Flick - if you visit the website and go to its Feature Page you will see you have many more options available to you.

The other free products in Post #10 also have a better support for different video formats than the Extra program.

No doubt as you can see - to claim that "no other DVD creator supports such comprehensive video formats like Extra DVD Creator” is untrue.

It would be more accurate to say - “no other DVD creator supports such a limited choice of video formats like Extra DVD Creator”.

...apart from this one -> Screenshot
I have completely installed the product - and there is definitely no "Relevant Knowledge" on my PC.

If it still causes you so much distress - I suggest you try one of the other free products listed.

To be honest, the Plato program, although free - isn't my favorite in the list either.

#10...again (BuBBy)

"as subsequently mentioned by Ron - “Plato DVD Creator Pro” is bundled with “relevantknowledge marketscore” adware. However, you are given an Accept/Decline choice during install. Simply select to Decline the install of relevantknowledge - and you are good to go)."

Well, just for the hell of it I disabled Spy Sweeper and tried to install, then Avira Antivirus blocked the program, period. So, I tried to install again, and Zemana Antilogger popped up with a warning to allow or block. So, then I disabled Zemana Antilogger, and tried to install again...there is NO Accept/Decline choice during install.

To Bubby at #1

What other program supports the SAME VIDEO formats?
I am not talking about DVD disc formas like DVD+R, DVD-R etcetera as they are not VIDEO formats. I have plenty of DVD discs that you can't put in a DVD video player. :-)

On windows Vist ULTIMATE 32 bit I had to click on CLOSE on the
"Failed to register files" dialogue a few times.

It did eventually install but maybe I should have unzipped the ZIP download and run the SETUP with a RIGHT-CLICK to select
"RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR"?

It may have installed more smoothly then, who knows?

Since the question is "on topic" today, does anybody know of a FREE app that can create a DVD with menu that has the buttons etc. overlaying an actual media clip that keeps looping? That is, the menu appears on top of a looping audio-visual clip rather than a static graphic-only background.

thanks

I recommend DeVeDe over this program. DeVeDe will create a DVD from your video files (including You Tube FLV) and make it into a ISO from there you burn it (as a ISO) into a DVD using your existing burning program. Google it, it is free and there are Windows and Linux versions.

Thanks GOTD, but I'll pass this offering up.

TO : FRED 2 #48, and RENEGADE @ #57 re BUBBLY, ETC

I really sympathize with you over that annoying BUBBLY, and also Ize, Jsmith, Tony, Mike, Ashraf please come back, and Fulbar, making all those excellent, helpful informative, posts today, especially when we know, we always search for them first, and today's posts from Bubbly, saved me a lot of time.

As a novice, I am very envious like you, because everyone knows that without these experts to advise us, we would be lost, and GAOTD would be a lackluster site. However, as they teach me, I feel it is important to express my gratitude and appreciation to these people for their time and trouble, so a big thank you everyone from Bill3.

Perhaps tomorrow you might like to post your expression of thanks ?

#38, Lauri/copmom, there are numerous reasons why I don't use DVD's anymore (and I've burned many hundreds in the past). Mostly, I used them for recorded TV shows, and most of those are in high-definition now (as are many camcorders these days). While I could lose the resolution and convert them to SD, I much prefer to keep them in HD, which generally won't fit on even a dual-layer DVD as a data file (and those are extremely expensive). I could burn to Blu-Ray, but those are astonishingly overpriced (pre-recorded can be competitive with pre-recorded DVD's, but I don't collect much). For my own purposes, bare hard drives, used externally via an adapter, are the best option. Those are more expensive than a stack of DVD's of equivalent capacity, but don't have filesize limitations, are much faster, lighter and much more compact than a stack of DVD's, and certainly much quicker and easier to search and find shows/movies. USB flash drives are much higher capacity than DVD's, and much smaller. They're too expensive for archiving, but fine for transferring files. I use a Media Center PC for most of my viewing. Most of my relatives don't have Media Center PC's, but do have PC's which are adequate for viewing even high-definition video (the MPEG-2 streams can be extracted from DVR-MS files). My flash drive is formatted as NTFS. I haven't looked into the NTFS security issues with transferring files to other people's computers, but if it's a problem, I could always use a FAT32 partition, and split and later recombine large files. I'm not worried about losing access if my computer croaks, you can always boot with software which reads and writes to NTFS volumes but doesn't care about NTFS security (that's why I think NTFS security is just a major pain which doesn't actually provide any security). If I really had to burn a DVD, I'd use VideoReDo TVSuite, which I have a licensed copy of and can automatically convert high-definition DVR-MS to fully compliant DVD, automatically correcting any errors, which are common in recorded TV. I always use the beta versions (generally much newer and improved), available on their forums. Vista Media Center itself can do the conversion and burning as far as I know, but nothing corrects errors like VideoReDo, and it won't transcode SD material which it doesn't need to.

To the people who gave my comment #4 a thumbs-down, while it's true I posted that early without any sleep and didn't realize the guide was for the wrong product, #59, mike, verified that Extra DVD Creator does in fact support trimming, apparently as shown in the guide.

Extra DVD Creator does work, & it will put video (in a limited number of formats) in a DVD structure for you to play from your hard drive or burn... It has the option to burn the DVD itself, but I didn't try that so can't vouch for how well (or if) it works. I could see it being used to put a TV show you recorded onto a DVD without the commercials. Otherwise it could use work, especially if it ever wants to compete with other low cost DVD Authoring software.

Booting into XP to give it a look, you 1st import your video [with audio] files (it won't work with separate audio & video), then for each file you can optionally drag the boxes at each end of the player timeline to trim. You can import the same file more than once, trimming each copy, in that way cutting out things like commercials. Otherwise that really is about it -- you get no menus. Besides lacking the capability to use separate audio & video files, there are several other cons...

The most glaring ommission is you can't do widescreen DVDs -- the only choices are NTSC (North America) & PAL (just about everywhere else). When I tried it, using separate files (or copies) didn't result in a new chapter at the start of individual clips -- that's why I only gave one use for the program. While the quality of mpg2 encoding looked OK, you have no control over encoding, & the default bit rate is severely low for DVDs. Nor could the program tell when you gave it already DVD compliant video -- it re-encodes video no matter what. The encoding process itself is Very slow, compressing video to mpg2 at roughly 2X realtime -- 2X longer than average, & 4X longer than optimized software on the same PC. Instead of the standard AC3 audio, Easy DVD Creator uses MP3, which may not play on all players [some reportedly will not play mp3 when it's part of a Video DVD, only handling mp3 on a DATA CD]. Since open-source AC3 encoders are available, that' a particularly bad design choice.

Looking at the files that make up Easy DVD Creator, you have the NCT code libraries for the Windows' System32 folder, plus a new one for playback I haven't seen as part of earlier programs. [I've not had problems with these NCT*.dll files in XP or Vista personally] A copy of gdiplus.dll is included for the system32 folder, which I moved to the program's folder immediately -- several programs come with different versions of this file, & to avoid conflicts they either include it in a WinSxS sub-folder, or in the program folder itself. The DVD structure is provided by the open-source DVDAuthor, which is a *nix app. To get it to work in Windows they use cygwin code libraries (dll files) -- the version used is a bit old, & may be a problem for Vista & 7 users. The free DVDAuthor GUI for example should work in both Vista & win7 without even needing elevated privileges {i.e. Run As Admin].

#50: “Unfortunately there are a lot of folks on-line who grasp part of the picture, think themselves expert, & heap loads of misinformation on everyone else.”

What is unfortunate is there are a lot of folks on-line who think themselves so expert that they don’t even need to install the program and work with it for a while before commenting on what others have said.

#50: DVD Authoring software designed to be easy to use, with limited features are & probably will stay popular.

What's considered "limited features" to one may be considered advance to someone else.

The validity and strength of these comments, in my opinion can only be categorize as conjecture. Today’s GOTD provides adequate features for titles, transitions, effects, capture video, and convert to a wide variety of formats; And for some, that’s more than enough.

#42 Kelly: APOLOGIES! When I typed that I must've been living in a dream, never mind the past! Yes of course. . . I did mean PhotoStory 3 (Gawd, wot a lummox!)

I really don't want to take this message thread too far off-topic but as there must be thousands of Ps3 users out there still struggling along (see various forums) your post is a breath of fresh air.

And there are bound to many here who either use Ps3 or are genuinely interested in authoring DVD slideshows (and Ps3 is, as said earlier, the best of 'em all -- only ProShow Gold Producer is equal to it, at a cost of several $hundred, whilst as for every other commercial or free) DVD slideshow creation software. . . forget it.)

Is saving to MPEG 2 the ideal solution so many frustrated Ps3 users have been seeking in terms of creating good quality DVDs?? Again, sincere thanks: Tony

#29: "I will stick with DVD Shrink."

Nothing wrong with Shrink / Recode, but apples & oranges... Those work with already created DVDs -- this helps you create one from scratch.

* * *

#32: "Format conversion for DVD burning is actually one of the biggest headaches reported on the ‘Net,"

Respectfully... Not at all. :-)

If there's a problem, it's that there can be an awful lot involved with any sort of video, *if* you want to dig deep enough. Most people don't need more than a step-by-step guide. Unfortunately there are a lot of folks on-line who grasp part of the picture, think themselves expert, & heap loads of misinformation on everyone else. Check out videohelp.com or doom9.org in the future.

"So PhotoStory 2 users are stuck with a highly specialised .wmv codec that isn’t amenable to easy conversion and must, therefore, import PhotoStory 2 into MS’s MovieMaker so as to get a more straightforward .wmv output."

1st off I'd suggest looking at the free DVD Slideshow GUI for the future. 2nd, I'd suggest checking out AviSynth & it's support forums. AviSynth takes *ANY* video your PC can play, & *Feeds* it to other software. There are several free & low cost mpg2 encoders... some accept input directly from AviSynth, with others you might also need VFAPI. VFAPI creates a *fake* avi file that anything that accepts avi files will take. Either way the original wmv video you created is not altered by/in some intermediate step, but fed frame by frame to the encoder (it's called frame-serving), & happens just as fast as if your encoder accepted your original file.

* * *

#36: "What do you burn now? What has taken their place?"

While I can't speak for Fubar & his reasons, perhaps this will help... DVDs are (still) great if you've got regular video content you want to see on your TV. Playback requires a $30 player & your TV -- that's it. Some people like to use Home Theater PCs, or other hardware to store & play video (in DVD or other format), because it gives them more flexibility -- rather than having to physically load a DVD player wherever you want to watch a movie, you can basically select what you want to watch & hit play anywhere you're connected, even over the web. And of course Video DVDs can't do true HD. That said, there aren't a whole lot of non-DRM HD sources, Blu Ray players / discs cost many times as much, so I expect DVDs &/or DVD video to be around quite a while still.

* * *

#39: "Authoring programs are not readily availble as freeware,"

Visit videohelp.com & doom9.org and similar... There's plenty of DVD & related apps available free, including the DVDAuthor today's GOTD uses.

An external hard drive has taken place of burning CDs and DVDs. If you have one of these, you can pretty much save yourself money on backing items up onto CDs and DVDs.

Wasn't this offered before?

It installed fine on my computer, Vista 32bit. However, it is so limited. When I DLed it before, it didn't even have many of the features offered.

This program is great for novice and beginner users of computers. If you are looking for something that is more advanced, take a look at comment #10!

Imagine someone wanting the "Woot, First to comment" to remain here??

What about the:

"Wow, I was just looking for something like this and GOTD must have read my mind cos here it is"

As for todays software, I have to agree with the comments left already, I prefer DVD Shrink or Clone DVD (They are'nt JUST for copying protected DVD's).
Todays offering works but seems pretty slow the ones mentioned, When I un-installed it Shrink stopped worked so it obviously deleted a shared DLL file that Shrink needed.
Thankfully, Shrink is free all the time.

Easy DVD Creator is a minimal DVD authoring app, who's claim to fame would be their included conversion features. Since it's using DVDAuthor, you probably won't have any problems with the technical aspects of getting your DVD to play on most all players.

The best way to measure (rate) a DVD authoring app -- other than the obvious: does it work or not -- is by feature comparison... With commercial software, the more you pay the more features you get. BUT, the learning curve also gets steeper the higher up you go -- DVD Authoring software designed to be easy to use, with limited features are & probably will stay popular.

To help you judge, a *full* DVD authoring app will allow you complete freedom designing menu backgrounds including button placement, freedom designing button highlights including colors (highlights = the graphics shapes that show you which button is selected), scripting for DVD features, multiple audio & subtitle tracks, ability to set chapters at selected mpg2 I (key) frames, let you create all types of menus (title, chapter, subs, audio etc). More advanced programs will also let you create angles &/or branching (different versions of the same video, for example an uncut version), & some will let you create buttons that show up during video playback (BOV). Karaoke & Anime text or graphics overlays are both somewhat rare features, along with the capability to create real, pro-level, dual layer DVDs (where the break isn't at a chapter).

Alternatives: If you want to do pro & semi-pro work, and don't like a lot of hand-holding, check out DVDLab. If you would rather, or don't mind having your hand held, check out Sony's software. If you want to edit mpg2 without re-encoding, check out Womble's products. For just getting video on a DVD so it'll play back on your set-top box, the free version of Muxman can't be beat. For everything else, both free & not, see videohelp.com, including their forums where you can pick up a lot of insight.

DVDAuthor is an open-source cli (command line -- i.e. DOS prompt) DVD authoring program, with a few GUIs or Front Ends available. Extra DVD Creator is one of them, including some of Extra Software's conversion features, relying on the familiar NCT files destined for Windows System32 folder.

:
The point is: the Program Requirements box (just below the user rating) is not always complete (c.q. correct).
For instance, yesterday 'outlook' was a requirement, but it was not mentioned, only in the comments (like yours).

This means the Program Requirements box is not enough to know what is or is not possible. People therefore like to check things for them self, nothing wrong with that and quite understandable (even encouragable I might add).

A comment like #9 "DaveTheCompGuy" is therefore much appreciated, many of these comments help to orientate.

Like outlook should have been mentioned yesterday, perhapse Vista should have been mentioned today. We only know by trying. Now we now (#7, #9 etc.) that vista is not supported, a good thing to know right?

The requirements box only means to me that if something is mentioned it should be working with that! Something that isn't mentioned could work afterall. This has to be tried, ofcource within terms of probability (like, I won't try an Apple-platform).

Quote: "If the software isn’t for that platform, then it isn’t supported" is a little bit superficial to me, though concerning platform-requirements, it does matter when it comes to support as you stated: when mentioned it should be supported, but when not, support can not be claimed.

Sometimes I like working with unsupported software if it does work in despite of that.

You must be in the past, PHOTO STORY 3 is here and has been for somr time. I use it often and it will produce many different formats and MPEG 2 will burn to DVD I usualy make the show in the format needed for the job I am doing and then often put it into windows movie maker and add more features to the story. This also can be burned to DVD and many other formats. Photo story 3 is very good and well worth having.

TYhe offering today is only good for GOTD but not for us.

It downloaded and installed easily, my camera produces avi files so I imported one straight into this program and it played ok on it's own player and I could select, trim, if I wanted. I then got it to author to dvd files on my computer and this it did very efficiently. Of course from those vob files etc I can now burn my dvd.
All in all I am very satisfied with this authoring program and will be keeping it, thanks so much to the company.
Authoring programs are not readily availble as freeware, but you should grab this whilst available.

it would appear that most EXTRA products are utter FAILURES for most, including myself...i'm staying away from EXTRA...i mean, considering all the TROUBLE-FREE WORKING FREEWARE out there, why subject yourself to utter frustration?

#4 .. Fubar - What do you mean when you say: "to me, DVD’s are as obsolete as CD’s, I never burn them anymore." What do you burn now? What has taken their place? Am I missing something? Just curious..

Despite above registry messages the program went on to install on it's own AND ALLOWED SUCCESSFUL REGISTRATION on a Vista Ultimate 64bit system with Service Pack 3 installed. NB I simply went to Task Manager to ensure the offending messages were removed from the screen. Have a screen shots to prove this. The application appears to be fully functioning. Selecting the HELP tag takes you the Extra site where a label proclaims 'Windows Vista Compatible' alongside the DVD Creator Help text (screen shot available). Unlikely to test every aspect of the application for some time but do not see any reason why others shouldn't get some benefit from downloading Extra DVD Creator Version 6.48 today!
