Helps you get back all kinds of lost or deleted data on Android devices.

ExifCleaner is a program which allows you to remove individual Exif tags or to strip Exif data entirely. This protects your privacy, helps you to hide unneeded, undesirable or sometimes sensitive information - about the image, photographer and location. Did you know that every digital photo produced with a camera contains it?

ExifCleaner doesn't alter actual image data - all operations are lossless for picture. Cleaning metainformation only saves disk space and server bandwidth, reduces download times, it's expecially evident on small-sized or large number of images.

Exif cleaner can also be useful for photo professionals, to get rid of the XMP, IPTC (including the whole Photoshop IRB section) as well as Exif metatada in photomontage works.

Program can work in a batch mode and can also be integrated into the Windows Explorer shell for quick access to its major functions.

You can also download portable version of ExifCleaner here (File size: 1.33 MB).

Case sensitivity in registration is such an obvious solution, but so easy to overlook!

Ok, just confirmed it does *not* need an internet connection to register, so copy/past the name and reg code in (copy the *whole* # with dashes and past into the first window in the form- worked for me) but beyond that all I can think of is permissions.

I have to give this a thumbs up because it has better fine control over which exact fields it will remove than any that I have so far tried (but there are a couple I still have on the list)- if you take the time to set it up. Funny thing, the non-portable version displayed the thumbnail right the first time.

Also, a warning- if you remove too much exif info, those plug-the-card-in print kiosks won't even 'see' the photo- found that one out the hard way. so quick clean will have a negative effect on easy prints.

I caution anyone that submits photos to professional organizations for publication against using this. I know AP checks this information and can cause quite an uproar if what you write about the photo differs from what the exif information says - such as date taken. Always have your camera set to the correct date as well. This software would be useful for personal photo galleries where you may want to have smaller file sizes to upload, but don't use it in a portfolio.

Hi, I had the same registration loop problem, until I found out that the license code is case sensitive - you simply have to enter the license code in capital letters, then it works alright. Good luck!
ps: Same user name and (case sensitive) key works with the portable version that can be downloaded from the superutils website.

Who have problems with registration: just contact the developer until this offer is actual. They are providing a good support, despite this is a giveaway. I think, you may consider contributing some ideas or suggestions for the next release of EXIF Cleaner in return.

I've been having the same problem with the program on Windows XP using Firefox. I register with the code and get prompted to restart but it never activates to a registered copy.

P.S. The other problem with this incomplete registration issue is that during the "trial period" it only allows you to process 7 photos at a time.

I have installed the software on my computer and when I opened it, it asked me to register it (indicating that otherwise, this would be a 30-day trial only). I entered the name as requested and registration code provided. I was then told that to complete registration, I would need to restart the ExifCleaner program. I did so, and was prompted to go through the entire registration program again. This seems to be an endless loop. GiveawayOfTheDay is not about 30-day trials, but about fully functional copies of software. I would appreciate a response addressing this problem before the offer expires. (I am in compliance with the criteria outlined in the last part of Comment 6, so this is not the issue.)

It works fine for me. It did exactly what I wanted - removed the garbage that I didn't even intend to create. It's great when you wish to upload an image into a gallery to not clutter the gallery page with the extra information.

I checked the Irfanview mention (my default graphics viewer) and noticed that it's method of removing the data over-writes the original file. If you're not sure it is what you want, this may not be a good idea! This product, by default, creates a "cleaned" copy and does not recommend you set the over-write as the option.

when I chose download from "Download or learn more" a different program downloaded - Advanced System Care 3. I wasn't paying attention and began installing it until it asked to create a system restore point!
Ensure you download today's program using the "Download ExifCleaner now" link - it works correctly.

A minor bug a tag "white balance" (this software preserves this, almost at custom tags to remove)
And do not work with TIFF files. Pro photographers need to strip exif from tiffs becouse do not use .jpg in workflow
But it is a good and fast software. I keep to use with jpgs (and waithing a update to correct minor wb bug)
Thanks

Hi all!!

Today's giveaway is GOOOD as it does what it claims effectively and efficiently!!

So THUMBS UP for me although can't see how many people here may find it useful (probably NO ONE...LOL!).

As freeware alternative, besides FAST STONE PHOTO RESIZER, I also suggest IRFANVIEW and a pretty unknowm tool called "STRIPPER":

sorry, must have missed the lossless part for some reason on first pass at the website, I was looking for a FAQ. got the screenshots, though.

I set up the portable version and for some reason on choosing a file from my Canon Powershot A720IS I get an 'invalid image data' error text where the thumbnail should be displayed, though scrolling down and double-clicking on the 'thumbnail present, double-click to display' entry pops it up just fine in a separate window.

after cleaning some of the metadata, *then* it displays the thumbnail just fine where the error text was. strange. win200sp4.

Installed and ran fine in Vista64.

I had never really looked into these tags as until recently all my Photos were of private stock. I was surprised to see all the info contained.

As somebody who is starting to share sample textures on-line I think this is a nice, quick way to blank out any info you don't want included.

In Vista Ultimate 64.
It installed but would not strip away the data. The files came out the same size. Then looking back at the strip file. The data was the same as the original. It did not clean any thing.

#6, Brad Spenser, Ashraf doesn't review the version which we get, GOTD gives him advance notice and he downloads whatever trial version is available on the developer's website. That's why he also can't comment on registration issues. I thought his review of SoftChronizer was particularly poor and inept, but I've said things about those types of utilities in the past, and it would take me forever to cover all of the issues, features, alternatives, etc.

#8, goodgotd, metadata is separate from the compressed image data.

I'll probably never use ExifCleaner, but one thing that really bugs me about it is that the UI doesn't remember UI preferences. By default, the panes and columns are very poorly sized, particularly on high-resolution displays. You can rearrange everything so that you can actually read things (sure, you can view the tooltip windows, but that's one-at-a-time), but the next time you open ExifCleaner, it's back to defaults.

Nobody ever seems to know about or comment on built-in features of Windows. At least on Vista and higher, Explorer's Details pane will display a few EXIF properties/values. Don't forget, among the possible properties that the Details pane will show, how much gets displayed depends upon the size of the pane, which you can manually set, or right-click and set, and it also depends upon the size of the Explorer window. Vista will batch-edit values, just select multiple pictures. More EXIF properties (but still a few) are available in the file Properties. Apart from various menus and context menus, Alt-Enter in Explorer will bring up Properties. As usual, apart from using the mouse, Ctrl-Tab and Shift-Ctrl-Tab selects tabs in the Properties window. Move your mouse down the Value column in the Details tab, and values which you can change will be shown, just like in the Details pane in Explorer. Again, batch-edit is possible (use standard Windows multi-select features). If you need full EXIF support, BuBBy covered the major freeware in post #1. Zoner Photo Studio, a previous giveaway, supports a number of EXIF features, including GPS and batch processing, and has some ability to fix corrupted EXIF markers.

Just a couple of things which I will say related to duplicate file finders, people mentioned shortcuts, symbolic links, and hard links. There are all sorts of implications to using those, which I won't cover here. A couple of handy tools, should you have a firm understanding of links and junctions and their implications, are Link Shell Extension and Junction Link Magic. Even those websites don't cover all of the implications.

I agree that for it's nice to be able to strip only part of the EXIF data, but not being able to edit same is a downcheck.

also, I find no information on whether this tool does it's job without losing image data in recompression- MetaEditor (below) claims lossless resave *and* can strip EXIF, IPTC, GPS, XMP if desired.

here are some other free metadata tools for images:

EXIF editors:
http://www.kiwiczech.net/index.php
EXIFeditor 2.2.2994.3886 (win98+ and .NET 2.0+)
and
MetaEditor 3.1.7.0 (winxp+ and .NET 3.0+, more features)

EXIF remover:
http://evilmaster.net/index.php?page=tools
EXiFStripper 1.0

also note that graphic editors may (probablty many) have an option whether or not to retain the EXIF data, as well as whether or not to rebuild the thumbnail in edited jpeg files, so check the options. XNView sure does.

many file rename programs can use EXIF data as well as IDv1/2 info in mp3 files to rename.

Xelkos, yes, it only does what it says: erasing of photographic metadata (Exif and others) only.

Mr. Ashraf, why you did not review the latest 1.2 version? It exposes some additional options (removing of IPTC & Adobe XMP), as well as they (SuperUtils) announced the fix of shell context menu.

2 all who prefer the portable edition (as me): You must ensure, that the application/current Windows user account has sufficient rights for writing to the config file ExifClnr.ini located in the same directory where the main executable is. Or you can simply run the application under admin account. If you do not, the application will fail at registering.

Review:

Smooth download, installation, activation, registration on Win 7 (32-bit) OS. Easy-to-understand, easy-to-navigate GUI. Program is feature-rich and offers many exif edit/designation settings - too many to list here. Program is also easy to operate, and allows for a "quick cleaning" option, without needing to choose any detailed "exif" options. Program also displays photos in "thumbnail view" on the right-hand pane, as well as the picture's exif/metadata information - including tag, name, value. The only downside (thus far) is the lack of a "Help File" within program, so if user is not familiar with how to do "exif" operations, it will be hard to learn the process.

Summary: - Program does what it claims, and is very easy to use. Two thumbs up for today's Giveaway. Thanks, GOTD and SuperUtils.

Freeware Option:

FastStone Image Viewer - CNET User Rating 4.5/5

The Good
* Straightforward and easy to use.
* Can strip the EXIF of multiple images at once.
* Users are given the option to clean whole EXIF data, just specific tags, or to clean all EXIF data except specific tags.
* Users are given the option to replace original files, or create new renamed files.
* Supports drag + drop.
* Has a portable version.

The Bad
* The right-click context menu entry doesn't register properly (at least in Windows 7).
* The ability to edit/batch edit the EXIF data of image files would be a really nice "plus" to the program.

Free Alternatives
IrfanView

What is "Exif"?

Stands for "Exchangeable Image File Format".

Practically all digital photo cameras include additional information (metadata) with pictures or audio captured with the camera.

For photos this type of information can be Items like "ExposureTime", "ISOSpeedRatings", "ShutterSpeedValue" and "ImageUniqueID".

There are also a stack of Exif GPS tags - for newer cameras that support GPS (ie. Satellite Tracking) to pinpoint where the photo was taken - which will work with sites like Google Earth.

For a list of Exif Tags - visit Here

Also check http://www.exif.org/ for
* Sample Images & the related exif data (for different camera models)
* The Exif specifications

I've included some additional Freeware - to help photographers make the organisation and management of their photos a little bit easier. I have added whether the software can edit Exif data or if the program only supports view access.
