What's not to love about Evernote? It's very handy, totally free and no nags! Yeah, there's a paid version but who really needs the extra functionality of the paid version anyway? I've been using the free version for some months and it's become a tool I don't care to live without. I say thanks and two thumbs up!

You may want to go to the forums on Ever Note, they have templates and even a free template exe program to alter your templates.

This is the first time I've ever downloaded a freebie and I LOVE it. I did have to be persistent in downloading it, but it was well worth the effort! I am shopping for my grandkids and all I do is copy and paste and I'm able to comparison shop. No handwritten notes. It takes me right back to the website where the product is. Thank you so much!!!

Hello,
To Hinata post #180 - Yes, that happened to me too!
Also see Gisele's post #107.
Nobody has addressed the issue, but for me, when I closed down and rebooted, the URL's came back as normal.

Can't explain why they disappeared & then came back, but as long as they stay put, I'm ok w it ...
Hope it helps,
M.

Hello,
To Sg #163 Yes, I'm still reading, was hoping someone would be nice enough to explain it.
Thank you VERY MUCH for your answer! Very kind :)

I d/l it to the PC & Laptops, just in case...
The fact that Evernote has proprietary s/w could indeed be a problem.
Not being able to read one's own notes unless we have the s/w on every PC is a bother, bc 5x$50. is much toooo much!
Being free and accessible everywhere is the big advantage of GNotebook & GDocs.

Well, at least now I know what is the difference.
Thank you again, Sg
M.

Hi Folks,

Sure, eventually you and your friends who happily use a product may eventually buy it. When you have a crash. Or more likely when you buy a new computer, or when there is a significant upgrade. So what ? If I happily have used a program for a year, and it has proven itself day in and day out, I will be happy to, at that point, become a registered user. (Although I may look for discount buy mechanisms).

Great GAOTD, today. However the complications in registration were tricky, even now it was very hard to tell whether an install was giving me a trial version or the full version. The fact that I do not have a personal registration number does not inspire confidence. Maybe you can rerun this in a month or two, or a week or two, with a better installer.

One problem mentioned elsewhere on the normal free versions of Evernote is a double-nag screen, instituted recently. (Many find this a dealbreaker, others don't care at all.) Otherwise I gather their free version is far better than the crippleware of many packages. Synchronization features are nice to have.

As for the regular freeware alternatives, some leaders seem to be:

Evernote Free
Keynote (excellent, but no new development expected)

http://www.neomem.org/
Neomem - open source

http://www.mytreedb.com/treedbnotes_free.html
TreeDbNotes (like Evernote, free version is strong)

Codelib Net, NoteLens are other notable mentions above.

And EasyNoter Lite was interesting, with more of a PIM-sense.

Shalom,
Steven

As Goldfinger said, the first time is happenstance, the second coincidence, and the third enemy action. My first post "got lost", but appeared on a retry. A secong post "got lost". This is my third one - and I wonder whether evidence will mount for enemy action.

Early (pre v2) versions of EN are brilliant. Then something went wrong (take over? new shark in the fish-tank?). Just look at how many people have had problems installing EN. How it OVERWRITES existing EN databases without asking, and jams up if you deny it that pleasure.

But most of all review #149 - this is what this is all about. These "giveaways" are loss-leaders. Or a bit like handing out free (insert your addictive drug of choice). You get commited (all your data is now in EN)/hooked and then sooner or later your PC goes belly up, or maybe you just get a new computer - and then - to get the same functionality - you will have to buy EN. What they are doing is building up a host of future customers by the back door.

Am I alone in thinking all this is just a little bit questionable?

Note to moderator: if you don't post this then it pretty much proves you are up to no good! If you do post it it will at least show you are open and even-handed in the comments you allow.

this is actually one of the best GAOTD lately :) Thanks for the efforts and keep on offering us such good quality software.

I have experienced issues until GAOTD updated the exe file, but once that was solved I imediately started to use it and it works fine!

I am just upset that it is not integrated with all my software :)

Keep up the good work!

Terrific product, but way too much code bloat. 55MB?? Was not even going to consider this until I saw the multitude of positive comments.
Thank you to all who took the time to install, actually try it, and then give honest comments without unnecessary derision.

*** LOOKY HERE ***
You can verify that the version is fully registered (see http://www.evernote.com/support/faq/ )...
- Go to Help, About.
- Look closeley at the popup window at the top.
- It will say "EverNote(R)" at the top, followed by the version #, 2.2.0.384.
- If neither of the words " (Free) " or " (Trial) " appear next to the Registered Trademark symbol, your version is fully registered.

Thanks, GAOTD and EverNote

I did what the instructions said to do, and got this 'Extract the installation file 'EverNote_Setup.exe' and run it to install and activate the software.' when I clicked onto the Setup folder. Had the same trouble installing it as some of the other posters had.
As some of you advised/instructed I went into My Computer, and found the Evernote file which I clicked onto, and got the program installed. This is the first time I have had trouble installing a program, other than the very first time (which was MY fault because I didn't read all the instructions first, which is what I always do any other time).

#59 if you are still reading, concerning Google Notebook, which I used also. Evernote's databases appear to only be readable by Evernote so you probably can't read your notes on another computer where Evernote isn't installed (I guess unless you get the portable version). Evernote stores its database on your computer, not on the internet like Google does. They both have their own advantages. I was using Google religiously before evernote but I really wanted something that would store info directly on my computer and this app is so easily searchable. And even though I have DSL, for me sometimes it is still a hassle using Google Notebook to read and organize my collections of notes (though collecting them is just as easy with Google Notebook). Maybe, in future versions, Evernote will have some type of online service that syncs with the user's computer.

Sometimes the ratings aren't accurate. Such as today, a few of the times when I clicked the rating button, it added or subtracted more than one point. I don't pay attention to the ratings anyway because I am going to make a comment or question regardless of whether everyone thinks it's helpful or not, and usually not everyone will think it's helpful but someone will either think it is helpful or be kind enough to answer your question (even if it's a dupe, it can be easy to miss info already given and--I have seen 2 or more of the same question posted very close together before most likely bc GAOTD has taken too long in moderating/censoring the posts )

#138 Cindi
There is a backup\restore feature under the file menu but that only backs up the database not the registration key. But, as some others have pointed out, there is a free version that has almost all of the features of the paid version.

#124
Thanks for the link to the thumbnails showing whether it was registered or not. I was unsure, especially as I was using the free version and uninstalled it before I installed the GAOTD offering.

#125
It doesn't look as if they offer an extension for Opera that will apply a button or a contextual menu for use directly within the application, but you can use the Universal Clipper and it works just as well. The universal Clipper loads into your taskbar along with Evernote and its icon is a circle with a check mark inside of it. You can either add a selection with it or use it to take a screenshot.

Thank you for your answer.
Hummm... what are "Stickie Pics"? Googled it, can't figure it out...

I'm old and a "newbie", half the time I can't understand what posters are talking about, but I keep trying!

I see nobody answered #74 question about the GNotebook.
Sorry it bothered so many people (-8), I'm just trying to learn folks, but it's not easy - sometimes one does not even know how to properly ask the question. No need to vote it down.
Thank you.

Download curiosities along with 118 and 128.

As I already have ritePen in a file named "Evernote" in my program files, I instructed it to download into a file named "C:\Program Files\EvernoteNotePad. I found the "read me" file there along with a large file named "Setup" (no.exe attached). I couldn't open this to see sub-folders, opening it or telling it to run only hooked me up again to the website I told me it was activated. Going back, I found a file labelled "C:\Evernote" listed upon expanding "My Computer". In this folder is one file named "Evernote_Setup". I clicked on that and it appeared to finish installation complete with a Macromedia Flash presentation on how it works.

Hope this may be helpful to someone.

Replying to my own post, #149...

Activate not connecting problem fixed!

I searched the internet for the error message. I found out this problem can be caused from Internet Explorer being set to offline mode.

I used Internet Explorer recently because I was trying to check into these types of programs. I normally use Opera.

Sure enough, it had become set to offline mode.

Note that I downloaded EverNote through Opera and the system still cared about IE being set to offline mode.

Also thanks to the other people who posted the various installation tips and links to other software.

I found some of the comments VERY useful...special thanks to the person who noted that the files should unzip to C:\Program Files\Evernote instead of C:\Evernote

My installation and activation went smoothly. I got the usual popup successful activation GOTD page after installing. I'm pretty sure I have the full version. I tried out the ink and shape recognition features (those that are only available in EverNote Plus version) and they worked fine.

If you go to Help>About EverNote it will show you what version you have. I have the full version. Click the link for examples....

I always find it easier to download with freshdownload which is

I have WinXP and everything installed fine. Now I have to try
out the potentials of Evernote!

Please note that after downloading and unzipping the Evernote.zip,
you will have to run C:\Evernote\EverNote_Setup.exe to install.
When it is successfully installed, you will see the Evernote icon
on your desktop.

#3 and #137.. you probably got so many negative comments because you did not provide useful info about the software. Then you asked a question that has been answered many times on previous offerings or that you could have answered for yourself if you just went to the EverNote site.

But to answer your question on what happens if your computer crashes with the Giveaway software? Well in most cases it means you will just have to purchase a license. (assuming you keep backups so you still have your data.) In the case of EverNote, there is an always free version that has almost all the functionality of the full version. So even if you crash, even if you don't want to purchase Evernote, you could just use this free version.

I haven't been able to try it because I can't get the activation module to connect to the Giveaway site.

Hello,

For people using computers that display a disk drive in My Computer for each of their USB ports (like my Compaq), there appears to be an issue when EverNote 2.2.0.384 is started up for the 2nd time onwards.

It seems to be harmless, but annoying to have to deal with by clicking "Ignore" every time.

This is the error message that appears:

WINDOWS - NO DISK

Exception Processing Message c0000013 Parameters 75b6bf9c 75b6bf9c
75b6bf9c

Apparently other EverNote users are registering their complaints:

http://forum.evernote.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=5071

This is not happening on my other computer I installed it earlier (which does not show these extra "phantom" disk drives in My Computer).

Googling for this error shows that EverNote is not the only application affected (ignore the "it's a virus!" posts):

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22exception+processing+message+c0000013+parameters+75b6bf9c%22

Hope we GAOTD folks might get the fix when it comes available...

I used the free version several months ago and it worked as advertised. According to the developer, the only differences between the free version and the paid version (today's offering) are these:

- Synchronization of notes across multiple computers via USB
- Advanced text and image recognition
- Search through printed and handwritten text found within images
- Correction of freely drawn shapes

If you like the way EverNote does things, then this is a very worthwhile download. Personally, I didn't like its "innovative design" way of handling things, but that's just me. I do know many people who swear by it and some of them have even bought the paid version.
