If "Sometimes the mere fact of protecting private info is a crime in the eyes of your boss," what about having this software installed on the same computer? Duh!

Try using TrueCrypt to encrypt your files and Egoist to hide them. Just because a file is hidden doesn't mean it can't be recovered easily. Hidden files can be recovereed instantly by professional forensic software, and even some free/cheap consumer level apps. High encryption IS a sign of something to hide. Best to encrypt then conceal on removable drive, then delete the files from your system and wipe free space/file slack with BCwipe or Eraser to make them unrecoverable.

What positive purpose is accomplished by trashing, bashing, and insulting this site and the people who run it?

If you don't like what's offered here, nobody forces you to visit this site or download the GOTD.

If you know developers of quality software who would be willing to offer their products for free as a Giveaway of the Day, my guess is that if you had them contact GOTD admin and make arrangements, GOTD would likely offer their products too. From what I've observed, I think GOTD is limited by the willingness of developers to offer products as Giveaways and maybe instead of criticizing the offerings here, more would be accomplished by appealing to software developers of products you want to see offered here, asking them to contact GOTD and participate.

I downloaded this and installed it on my xp desktop after doublechecking its homepage to make sure this was a real app and not an April Fool's joke. Its name sure sounds appropriate for an April Fools joke!!!

The app correctly shows as registered.

There is very little help or explanation of how to use it, etc, even on its homepage.

It would be nice if it were possible for apps like this to be so that instead of having to use passwords that if forgotten, render your data inaccessible, if such a program could be set up on a USB stick so it was possible to open the private files by inserting the USB stick that had the program on it. Then nobody could open the files except the person in possession of that particular USB stick.

Regarding Model Analyzer, please make it available for download again because the reason I did NOT download it was due to reading in comments, of all the problems with registration that others had run into with it.

@Alex who seems to think Truecrypt screams ut that you are hiding something on your PC.
Erm...obviously he has never used it.
It comes as an exe file with a couple of other files, no need to install it so right away there is no evidence of the program anywhere on the PC.
You can keep it in a folder somewhere and rename the exe if you are that paranoid.
As for the files it creates for you to hide things in, they can be made to look and be like ANY FILETYPE at all! So how does this mean it screams out that you are hiding files??!!
Oh and I forgot one important thing, as Truecrypt can be completely portable, plus you do not need the program there once you have hidden data, so there would be absolutely NO WAY for even an expert to tell the hidden data is there.
Tell me, how on earth does that make it scream out!!??
For the people who get tired of hearing people say Truecrypt then I will tell you that I was the same until I gave it a try.
The reason everyone from Leo Laporte to me recommends it is simple: It REALLY IS the best you can get if you want to hide data from prying eyes.
I have not tried the program here today as I don't need it but I also had a look at the reviews etc and decided I would not be interested anyway.
Just clarifying the Truecrypt point!

At first I was excited by this program offer. I installed it and found out that I couldn't do anything I wanted to with it. I was hoping to be able to hide whole files or programs but the program would only let me import certain file types. I removed the program quickly. Thank you anyway! P.S Does anyone know of a free program that will hide all files?

If you're afraid of needing a reformat and thus losing your stuff, I suggest you burn the files to a CD and hide it somewhere, and use EA for storing a convenient local copy of the files.

I've played around with stuff like TrueCrypt, and I have trouble finding the stuff and digging it out again, perhaps because I have a number of external drives and the computer tends to assign various letters to USB drives depending on whim, I don't know.

@9 /Skye-hook

I think you make a good point (no unlocking code so no possible way to reinstall program and recover the hidden materials).

At least some programs can be restarted within a limited time frame if they are activated with a manually inserted registry code. There appears to be no way to recover hidden data using "Egoist Assistant" other than purchasing the program and reinstalling. Possibly, there is no guarantee even then.

To carry the above question a litle further, what guarantee do you have that if you reinstall the "Egoist Assistant" program that it will find previously hidden materials? It may not find previously hidden files or folders even if the same algorithm is followed time and time again.

This program comes complete with so many unknowns that the simple act of installing it on your computer to give it a trial run guarantees only one thing - the beginning of an adventure (and who is to say if it is beginning of a happy adventure or simply a frustrating one).

I would have to wonder if there is any safety mechanism that prevents overriding a legitimate file by a file being hidden through a name change. To carry an idea further, does the program contain any safety features at all?

In the case of, "Egoist Assistant", this is one time that I would not criticize someone making a comment about an offered program on GOTD without having tried the program first.

For starters I want to say I have not had much chance or desire to try this program. I use TrueCrypt personally and have for several years. Thank you GAOTD and Egoistassistant for the opportunity, however.

For the many commenters here both for and against TrueCrypt, et. al., please realize this does not really help trying to make one look better or worse than the other. They are different. Some may like the way one works better than the other. Some people are avid OpenSource fans, some avoid it like the plague. If you are mentioning the alternatives that is one thing, but don't try to say it is better because of this or that unless it is a feature comparison. Even then stating the difference does not require a judgement on which is better. Leave that to the reader.

For those asking, please read the websites if your answer is not here. TrueCrypt does offer true file hiding as well as encryption. And while hiding your files automatically means you are hiding illegal software or porn to some, believe it or not there are legitimate uses for it - such as files with sensitive data - or do you not consider SSN's, phone numbers, etc. sensitive?

To the rest of you, I am sorry for the off topic comment, but it seems to be getting worse, rather than better around here lately.

Is there a major flaw with the encryption capabilities built into W2K, XP Pro, or Vista Business & Ultimate?

The 'Home Edtions' may not have it but then they shouldn't be let out of the home to begin with. My Humble Opinion.

If anyone needs it - there is a help file in C:\Program Files\eAssistant

Will run from USB drive but data will still be saved to C:\Documents and Settings\YourUsername\Application Data\eAssistant on the computer you're using eAssistant on to at the time.

To the developer:

Would be a good idea to change the directory that "hidden" files are saved to (not just C:\Documents and Settings\YourUsername\Application Data\eAssistant).

The link to the eAssistant website under Help -> About is spelled incorrectly.

As already mentioned the option to change the application title (Data -> Options) does not seem to work.

Under Data -> New Data File the word graphics is spelled incorrectly.

The option to Delete ALL Data (Under Data) should probably have one more prompt to confirm that the user does indeed want to delete everything.

And finally - this is way too expensive for what it does, especially considering that there are an abundance of freeware alternatives to protect sensitive information.

Thanks GOTD,

Damian

I saw this on their website pages and decided to pass on this one.

Q. I forgot the password for my data. What should I do?
A. Unfortunately, there’s no way to restore data without knowing the password.

Their website ought to have some different ideas for this program's use other than just hiding porn.

re: their home page statement, "Sometimes the mere fact of protecting private info is a crime in the eyes of your boss, parents or a spouse." - I would suggest to anyone and everyone to keep your personal stuff off of your work computer. Of course those who travel with a company laptop may find this difficult but to them I would suggest getting a well respected online storage site and keep the bus./pers. separate as much as possible.

To #31: I think the idea is you would have made a backup of your files.

1) Backup files

2) Re-format/Reinstall OS
3) Restore files... and what happens to the hidden files? How do you retrieve them if you don't buy this software after the reinstall of your OS?

Many people do reinstall Windows regularly to keep things clean.

FWIW...
Egoist Assistant uses the concept: Hide in Plain Sight. Maybe it appeals to some folks because in theory if someone found an encrypted archive, that in itself is evidence that you have something to hide. TrueCrypt hides a portion of your storage device, redundantly (multi-layered) if you wish, but unless you use it on something like an USB stick (one without capacity written all over it), it can be somewhat obvious that a large portion of something like your hard drive is missing. With Egoist Assistant's method, that shouldn't be a problem. An alternative approach is steganography [ph], where you can encrypt & hide (bury) files inside other files (often images), & obviously another is to encrypt single files or zipped collections & simply rename the files to something like .dat or .dll. And/Or you can always combine methods -- depends on how paranoid you are, no offense intended because sometimes its justified.

Myself, I always have trouble remembering passwords, & find that encryption programs that let you use keyfiles make life much easier. On the downside, that's just much more convenient that writing a password down.

#29 JustinCase Great tips. I would hate to lose files, it would be better to get a small SD card and password protect it and just hide it with the files on it. 4-8 GB chunks should be large enough for even video, and is the safest I can think of.

It cannot delete one of the data file I created, no matter what. Tried to add a *.doc text file, the first time it fails, but succeeded the 2nd time. Added a folder with 2 pictures, but one one came out. Tried again adding 3 images, and on opening, came out 4 images, the 4th one being a duplicate. Software with almost no instructions on how to use, even going to their site. I would think twice before thinking of putting my files here because of its inconsistencies.

Please be very careful with software like this, and But test it thoroughly, with unimportant files, for a length of time, before putting your full trust in it.

I have tested a number of these, and some randomly lose track of what you actually have hidden and/or where it is. I.e. the index becomes corrupt or is somehow destroyed. So once you've trusted it to hide your most important files, if there is some minor, internal malfunction in the software, or your system, (even things like virus/malware checkers in some cases), your important files are gone for good, never to be seen again, by anyone. They were hidden, and now they are lost.

All programs like this should include a recovery utility you can keep somewhere out of the mainstream, or off-system, called something else, just in case it creates a crisis, so one can recover lost files. But unfortunately, very few of them do.

That's not to suggest this program isn't solid, and well written. Or that it is. But it's crucial to know how reliable it really is, in advance. I've learned the hard way, with other, very similar programs. I will try this too, but with great caution and extensive pre-testing.

As already pointed out here as well, if a system crash occurs, requiring a restore, expect very nasty things.

On the plus side, having this capability is exceptionally beneficial, as long as the program is known to be completely solid and reliable. I've yet to find one I have total faith in.

-JC

A fellow reader of GOTD has asked me to recommend an alternative to today's offer of AE. I have suggested that he use uncomplicated Free Hide Folder as it is very simple - yet is password protected, offers backup and can hide or show a "hidden" folder" more or less instantly.
Hope this may be of use to others.

Could this be because I only have windows xp sp2. I dont know?. I'm afraid I will have to uninstall this one. :(

Forgot to mention that when in Select resource type window, to save a folder (as opposed to save a file) you have to choose the Images album option (middle button).
The other options are: Video File and Text File.
Languages are English & Russian and AE offers Password Encryption.
Very simple to use.

@8: No: actually running a program requires it to be exposed to your system. Something like this or TrueCrypt must unencrypt the executable first before it can run, so you can't use this kind of stuff to hide their presence. The executable can also then be detected through various registry mechanisms, like "Recent Programs" kind of stuff which provides a trail. (Note that even portable applications are unable to truly "run without a trace" due to this)

This program is different than TrueCrypt in that it's meant for porn. It could be used for secret documents, but it's really meant for porn. The differences as a result are that this program allows encrypted files to be viewed without fully unencrypting the files or a volume by using an "internal player and image viewer". This is advantageous as it does allow viewing of those files "without a trace" because it's not being opened by a traditional document/image viewer, so no traces are left there or in their related parts of the registry.

It is also different in that files are never truly hidden or invisible: TrueCrypt puts everything into a single volume file so that individual files can't be determined or read, and also has volume hiding as well. This program seems to encrypt files individually and renames them into something mundane, like .dat or something innocuous.

Actually, now that I looked more closely at their ad copy, it may not actually encrypt files unless you really want to - it may just rename the files in order to hide them, and use an internal viewer to view them. Either way, the hiding mechanism is much different than TrueCrypt's methods.

If you're not convinced this was created for porn, see this bullet points from their site:

* You can install the program with any suitable name. The main idea is to choose a neutral name that won’t arouse any questions, probably something connected with your work.
* There are no provocative titles and captions such as "sex" or "porno" during showing content. So, trackers won’t detect any forbidden content.

Sorry, it's actually meant for porno, not porn. My mistake.

I think the software is at least worth a download because of their ridiculous ad copy:
There are 2 ways to keep your private info. First way - keep your data in a safe under lock and key, hire a couple of rifle men and erect a banner with the text "Protected by USN and USAF". It is a good way of saving your data. Moreover, nobody will have access to your private data. But there is one minus here: anybody will know that you have something to hide.
Second way is to hide your data, so that nobody will know that you have something to protect. Therefore, it will be impossible to steal something that “doesn’t exist”.

Honestly, if you were really interested in having access to your files and keeping them from prying eyes(read: wife and/or cops), a bootable USB key with a TrueCrypt volume on it would be a far better solution.

Egoist Assistant is not officially supported on Vista and I am running it on a Vista machine. So some of the problems that I mention may only be on Vista. XP users feel free to chime in if you do/don't experience the same issues.

The Good
* Nice tricky appearance.
* You can "hide" and "encrypt" your videos, images and text/document files.
* Plays videos in-house.
* Allows you to view your images in-house.
* Opens document files in-house.

The Bad
* Changing program name does not work.
* .DOC, .XLS, .PDF files are not run within the program.
* Little to no controls to go from image to image when viewing an image album.
* No "Help" section.
* No information on what type of "encryption" is done.
* The actual "data files" containers aren't really hidden at all.
* You are limited to only "hiding" video, image, or document/text files.
* Does not work with .DOCX or .XLSX.
* Does not work with PowerPoint files.
* Does not work with SWF or FLV videos.

Free Alternatives

GAOTD version is good for evaluation, and I do appreciate the GAOTD gifts highly, but I'd consider that point before becoming a regular user of the product.

I also have heard consistant recommendations for TrueCrypt and as Gedrean said, TrueCrypt has provided the solution to what Alex addressed by creating the provision for it to be run from a USB stick. You just gotta be a little more informed before making a strong factual sounding statement. Good thing there are so many well informed computer savvy folks who also have the GAOTD addiction. ;)

Small & neat, one does not need to have porn or criminal-orientated data on their puter to use a little program such as this.

EA is one way of protecting something quite simple and innocent such as your PIM or daily diary data. So if you wish to keep your data safe from prying eyes, then this is at least one neat option with its profile options.
I had difficulty at first getting it to register (XP Pro SP3) so I opted for the web page trial 30 day version to see how it worked - but this stated that it was limited.
The HELP file is basic but gives the user an outline of what the program can do - via Features, Main Window, how to create NEW Data File and Data Browsing.
Applying the usual GIVEAWAYOFTHEDAY code to it did not (at first) seem to activate registration properly (my test rig is about to be completly wiped clean anyway) but it did allow me to use and run through it's options.
It seems to do what it says it can do - as it managed to encrypt and hide 24mbs of PIM data (jpgs & text etc) plus a number of larger folders of mixed data.
Some of you may actually find it quite useful.

They normally ask $49.99 for this program and for people with data safety on their mind, it may seem worth it but at that price it faces stiff competition. More so from some free software out there.

If AE does not appeal, then perhaps Free Hide Folder, S-Tools, AxCrypt, Encrypt4ALL, WinSesame, TrueCrypt or even 7-zip etc may be of use to you.
Nonetheless it's thanks to GOTD & EA for today's free offer.

This isn't serious security software, it's more of a hide-from-your-boss application. For those who don't understand what this is or how to use it, go to the product website, which is linked at the top of every giveaway page.

While not Vista-compliant, this will install and run on Vista. It has a lengthy EULA which was written by a lawyer (or copied), but my impression of the program's concept and coding is that it's written by a beginner. While I like the concept better than a rootkit-type hider, this is cumbersome and buggy. It "hides" documents, images, and videos by storing them in a common location with other names, and attempting to make itself look like a harmless application. Exactly what file formats are supported is unclear, as it will attempt to hide more formats than it can actually display. The inability to hide arbitrary formats is a major minus. It overwrites previously-used names without prompting. Presumably, you would want to use a nondescript name, but the original name is lost, making it hard to know what you've got. There can be all sorts of problems attempting to open formats which it can save. If an open fails, you may have to restart Egoist Assistant to delete the file. For those who can't figure out how this displays files, they're in MDI child windows, the UI is active and allows the usual MDI manipulations.

There's no real security here; no description of the encryption algorithm used (which I didn't test), almost certainly no secure-delete of the original.

As for yesterday's Video Encoder offering, ffdshow is horrible, I'll probably try to uninstall it.

A couple of FYI items. There were a lot of comments yesterday from people wanting to downgrade from IE8 to IE7. I don't know why anyone would want to do that, IE8 is much better. UnMHT for Firefox continues to improve; lack of MHTML support used to be a major reason why I didn't use Firefox as my primary browser (IE8 generally loads pages faster on my PC). Windows Update provided an optional installation of various Windows Live programs (a free account will suffice for at least basic stuff), which you can also download from the Windows Live website. Skip the Windows Live Movie Maker beta, which is fortunately unchecked by default, as it's basically just a very limited new-UI preview. While lots of toolbars have had the ability to use web-stored favorites/bookmarks, the Windows Live toolbar will sync IE Favorites, presumably similar to tools for other browsers (but I hate having another toolbar, and I think the Windows Live toolbar is lame compared to Google's). Speaking of which, Microsoft has never fixed the URL and MHTML iFilters, nor has it fixed the problem of failing to mark files saved from a Protected Mode tab for Indexing. But it wouldn't be like anyone at Microsoft to actually use their own products.

Johnny #15 said "because your save location is hidden, you must remember the name because you will not be able to select it in the “open file” box.

Since EA lacks file explorer functions, navigating through your saved data is a pain at best. You have to constantly use the “open data” command to access the saved data menu, then click on the items one at a time to open it. The are no thumbnail view, no list, no nothing! Looking for a file is literally a needle in a hay stack (a VERY large hay stack)."

I'm interested in this for security, to hide personal / credit info from spying eyes, particularly online / physical theft. BUT my memory is appalling - I find files, emails, programs on my pc I have no recolection of ever even having heard of, let alone read or installed and used at some time. So is there no search program or facility that I could use that would display hidden files to me?
I like the idea of NOT announcing "Hidde/encrypted data HERE" but unless an authorised user can find /search his own files it does seem a major flaw with potentially disasterous consequences.

Instalation went smooth on my Vista. The program itself left me questioning just how to use it to my advantage. The biggest problem for me is that once I figured out how to use it I realized I would have to use my memory or make notes for myself, the later would win out on me thus making it completley useless - but - that's just me. Thanks anyway, but took this one off and looking forward to see what will be next.

Installation is smooth on WinXP SP3.

I believe what this program does is create an hidden subdirectory and put your files there. THAT'S IT!

The user interface is difficult to use and since there are no documentation, it took me several minutes to figure out what the program is for, what I am suppose to do and how to do it. I tried adding an image folder with 8 photos in it but EA only shows the 1st one. So basically, I think you can only add files to it one at a time. Further, because your save location is hidden, you must remember the name because you will not be able to select it in the "open file" box.

Since EA lacks file explorer functions, navigating through your saved data is a pain at best. You have to constantly use the "open data" command to access the saved data menu, then click on the items one at a time to open it. The are no thumbnail view, no list, no nothing! Looking for a file is literally a needle in a hay stack (a VERY large hay stack).

The concept itself is good, but the implementation is plain stupid.

i tried to use a few dummy images (just some random screen caps) i added 2 then saved it then tried to add the third in, it goes over and overrights the other 2 images, if you were trying to make a folder and have it updated and keep all your pictures of whatever, it deletes the old and puts in the other ones. also when i added in the 2 it was unclear of how to change between pictures.

overall i didnt like the product as truecrypt is encrypted and you can add and delete from the encrypted folder and view all pictures. It overall felt plain but not in a good way it was hard to understand how to do anything. Already uninstalled however GAOTD is always hit and miss and this was definitly a miss

10 thumbs down :(

From the site:
Your media, images and texts are stored as depersonalized data files.

This is exactly what Truecrypt and about a dozen other programs will do for you, for free, and with more exacting details publically available as to how they do it and what else they do.

This program's website does give more info than the typical GAOTD program's does, but unfortunately their product offers too little 'new' to be a great competitor to TC and others.

That being said, the fact that it allows install as a different name, and has a skinnable interface intended to hide its true purpose, does make it useful for those at work wishing to hide their true activities.

For security purposes though? Truecrypt can fit on a USB and works great from there.

Have a good one, y'all.

I think I like this program. But I have one question: If I've used this to hide alot of files, and later on I need to format my harddrive. Will I be able to install this and find my hidden files again?

The main idea is hide information. TrueCrypt is the great software but it bawls "I have protected data!!!" or "I have encrypted porno!!!" ;)

Without having a reg code, I'd never want to use it to hide anything important! If you lose this product due to reformat or whatever, you lose all you hid with it forever! And it doesn't sound like encrypts anything. Also, if you still HAVE this program in pc, I hope it has a password, or anyone can use the program & find what u hid. I did download it, but decided not to install due to the above. Some things ya just need the reg code for. Thanks anyway to the makers & GOTD! :)

So, just as Devil's advocate here. . . Were I to suspect someone (spouse, business partner) of using this type of software to conceal an affair, hidden assets, etc. Might I also use such a program to better conceal the presence of keyloggers and screen capture programs and the collected data from them?

#1 Daniel Seel. Did you even tried Egoist Assistant?

TrueCrypt is much better and open source with high encryption. Egoist doesn't appeal as much to me.

It's hard to tell from the poor discription but is this encryption software or is it an advanced means of "hiding files", with or without encryption?
