Regarding compression, the compression used is Snappy, though GZip and QuickLZ may also be used. In addition to that, LZF and LZMA are also available, but are not referenced.

The backup jobs database and saved passwords are protected using AES, but don't count on it being secure because the program encrypts them with the default key and IV.

If you don't like the GUI, you can always make your own, or integrate the program into your own little utility. Reference Backup.Api.dll in your program using .NET 4.0 and you'll have access to the core backup/restore libraries.

@52: You get an auto-reply directly after sending us an email and the 'real' reply usually follows a few minutes or a few hours later (depending on the time). At the moment, all support requests are answered so you should have received your code already.

@20.Spencer - r u kidding? (Almost) NOTHING is (unintentionally) misspelled in my submission (yes, i missed the double "ii" - big deal - if my submission was an ad i think i would have caught it - especially since i would not use the wording it hid in) (u gonna gig me 4 the missing period?)

RE: "blaming the authors ... for bad spelling" ... i'm NOT (per se) - i'm pointing out - TO THEIR benefit IF THEY WILL READ WITH DISCRETION (unlike @19.Ronaldr_Perth and his ilk)). READ last sentence: Just a friendly reminder to consider your target group(s) and bring roses instead of plums…

I sent an email to their support team because the program says the emailed key code is invalid but all I got was an auto response email. Not impressed. It's been so long now since I sent it that I'm now angry and uninstalling it.

When I first ran backup, I tried to password protect but it would not let me proceed to next screen. So, I proceeded without a password. Now that I have created a backup, I cannot find the option to add password protection. What am I missing here?

Other than that, I like it so far.

On file formats: Backup file consists of a SQLite index with chunks of file after that. The SQLite index is AES encrypted, while the data is only Caeser encrypted. The key used to decrypt the database is base64 of the SHA256 hash of your entered password, and the Caeser key is the length of the SQLite password.

Every ngen image in order to MUST have the ngen service enabled NOT disabled….

edit: to compile of cause

then the service stops at next reboot

also if you disable ngen service any installation of other software that compiles MSIL down to native code during software installation will give you an installation error.

As ngen is well managed by the .net framework you don't need to mess with it. Keep it as is. It's all OK as it is.

@ 44 Stefan

NGEN needs a little more detail here that users know what it is.
So, I will do that.

NGEN is part of the .Net SDK (Software Development Kit) to create a native image of intermediate language code. So, what happens is that the .net exe is compiled to native code before JIT compilation instead during JIT and thus makes a .Net executable run like native code with a slight performance increase. Every ngen image in order to run MUST have the ngen service enabled NOT disabled....

hope that helps
cheers

Someone from AbelsSoft (Sven? Hi!) wrote in above saying this program backs up active files and can make a boot CD to recover from (to a new blank hard drive?).

Cool, if true.

But how do we access, say, a backed up MS Outlook PST in the backup set?

Also, the program does NOT offer to make a bootable backup CD -- how would I do this?

Answer: click [ Emergency Backup ] in the top right menu strip to download a CD image ... which promises to empower making 1:1 images from HD to CD.

So, does that mean I can only do 1:1 AFTER booting from the CD, or can I make a CD 1:1 backup image from Windows live within the program?

Answer: you MUST reboot from CD to make 1:1 backup HD to CD snapshot sets -- can't be done in background while using the computer.

Should I try and get back to you all?

Well, it downloaded, then failed to write a CD (wrong ISO writer found), so I exited the program to see if I could burn the ISO file myself ... and the program had erased it as if it were a dispensable temp file(!) ... so I'm re-downloading the ISO file AGAIN, argh!

Painful!

It would ne a neat utility feature, but hardly something I could recommend to customers: "... close everything, reboot from CD, then run a stack of blank CDs to copy the hard drive in 700 MB increments, hope it all works, then reboot to the hard drive, save the CDs, and remember to do it again whenever you change anything important, making the first stack of CDs an ob$elete wa$te of time and money ..."

Argh!

Note: I deleted my first backup (test to second hard drive directory), but the program thinks it still exists!

Svwen -- anybody -- I want:

(a) the backup to LOOK like the original file structure, visible and usable in Windows Explorer, and with anything such as in MS Word [ File > Open ...],

and

(b) to copy long file- and directory-names, and active files.

That's it.

Simple, no?

Apparently impossible!

PS -- Sven, I do LOVE so much of your other programming at http://www.abelssoft.net/ and I recommend it often and enthusiastically.

Here how it should look:

When installed Microsoft.Net Framework 4 client on XP then disable (!!!) the Microsoft.NET Framework NGEN 4.0 service (do this every time You have updated this Framework 4 client):

Start – Settings – Control panel – Administrative tools - Services

Right click it – choose OPTIONS – choose STOP – choose dropdown DISABLED – click apply – click OK.

If You do this after install and update of it XP won’t hang on the desktop after a restart. The service aren’t needed to run.

Stop it already with "EASY" anything -- this program is stupid in that it is not smart in that it is non-standard, it requires perhaps this program to restore rather than being able to use any other pre-existing way to inspect and use the backup, and there's no way to independently confirm and verify that a backup has been made, let alone any way to actually USE the backup if you ever get disconnected form this program.

FREE XCopy, XXCopy, and RoboCopy create 100% standard output that can be verified and USED immediately ANYWHERE ANYTIME.

However, each has compromises, such as dealing with long file names (over 256 characters including directory names), or copying active files, and they work from a command line (but can be scheduled or batch-filed to automate them), and other folks here and across the Internet can list other pros and cons of XCopy, XXCopy, and RoboCopy IF ANY NEW PROGRAMMER WANT TO KNOW WHERE TO START WITH A NEW BACKUP PROGRAM.

All we need is a program to reliably capture long filename / directory name combinations AND backup active files such as MS Outlook PST files and such.

Look, I LOVE Sven Abels, but really, NOT ANOTHER PROPRIETARY, NON-STANDARD so-called "BACKUP" PROGRAM, please ... I beg you!

I've been hearing about different types of back-ups and I am wondering which type is best? How does taking a snap shot of the drive safe anything? I haven't used back-up before since I never had the need, I always saved 'my documents' and other images and stuff on a CD. Then if something happened, I just did a restore on my system, reloaded any software from the installation disks, and then reloaded my saved CDs. But I recently received a scare when I lost my video drivers and didn't want to restore because I would then have lost the lovely GOTD programs that I got. Do some back-up programs condense the computer information that I could store on a CD or a Flash Drive? I have XP pro sp3 and have a 76.6 GB hard drive.

I researched backup early last year. I am a backup addict and used to spend a few hours per week with automated backup programs of all sorts. I even had arranged offsite storage of DVD discs with my neighbor. Then, through my research, I found backblaze.

In addition to the hours per week I also found that I spend more money than I realized for backup programs, supplies, drives and services etc. I was about to buy a blu ray drive when I did my research. I have never looked back.

Now 2 minutes a week, $50 a year (4.18 per month) instead of $90 average per year I am no longer a backup addict.

You owe it to your backup, money, time and patience to check out backblaze. I have already used it once and restored 100% of my data. Note: It does not backup your Operating System and that was a shock to me. But I realized that I always reloaded the OS every time I
bought a new disk drive anyhow. So that it not really needed.

Please study your options, as I did, and make up your own mind. Also, I do not own stock nor know anyone at backblaze so my opinions are my own with encumbrance. Anyone who buys anything else or wastes time and money without considering this option is nuts!

@ 34.

VC100_CRT_x86 is a Microsoft Visual Studio C Runtime package for 32 bit software. That means it is needed for Easy Backup to work. It's nothing to be worried about. Also Microsoft .Net Framework 4 is needed to run easy backup.

If you run Windows 7, installing these two components should not bare any risk if it is from Microsoft. If you run XP, you need Service Pack 3 or it will fail.

The same for VC100_CRT_x86

I have worked with backup software for years. This software, as well as a lot of others, tell you how great they are at backing up your system. They say little or nothing about restoring in the case of system failure.

If your system has 1 partition of 1 terabyte, as many systems are shipped, and have a HD failure, can you restore to the 500 Gig Drive that you have. I do not want to wait a week to get a new HD to get my system going.

If my motherboard fails, can I restore to a new computer? Most backup software does can not handle different storage drivers. It is very hard, maybe impossible, to do this manually.

Most software is great at making backups. Very few handle restore well in the real world. Some that work well - Old Norton Ghost - True Image - EaseUs ToDo 4.0 Free.

This one gets a thumbs down.

@33: You can choose between 2 options:
-You can reinstall Windows first and then use the Windows version to restore the files with all options
-You can use our recovery CD to restore a 1:1 image of the PC. The recovery CD is a boot CD so you can boot it without installing Windows first

@34: We cannot influence the .Net and VBC libraries as they are from Microsoft but please contact us at contact@abelssoft.net and we will try to help you with this.

Required installation of Microsoft Net4 Framework Extended.
Also installed VC100_CRT_x86.

Messed up my PC such that on next start up the whole PC went into [forever-hourglass-mode] hanging for a very long time.

Uninstalled this + Microsoft Net4 Framework Extended + VC100_CRT_x86. immediately after that.

What horrible rubbish.

Even if a subscriber to GAOTD does not download a day's offering, the topical discussion can quickly educate. Many thanks, folks!

Today’s giveaway is not a bad app at all, but needs some serious development, as rightly pointed out above by # 5, maybe because it's still on its early stages....who knows!!

Besides that, it doesn’t support WinPe Recovery Media, which is as far as I’m concerned a crucial feature every serious and professional backup & restore software should provide to its users.

So, as matters stand, I give it a THUMBS DOWN, simply because there are plenty of FREEWARE ALTERNATIVE out there much more powerful and comprehensive than this GAOTD!!

In fact, as FREE & far BETTER ALTERNATIVES, besides cool disk imaging software like MACRIUM REFLECT and/or DRIVE IMAGE XML, I recommend the following amazing programs:

* VOSI.biz Client Suite

This is an awesome software package bundling 3 great client applications into one:

- VOSI.biz File Explorer
- VOSI.biz Online Backup
- VOSI.biz Email Backup

With this stunning program, whenever you want to backup your system, you can once & for all throw any removable device (USB DRIVE, EXTERNAL HD, DVD/CD etc...) away, since it's able to do the following things in 2 mouse clicks:

- drag & drop large files and folders (max 8 GB per file) to download & upload them at fast speed using an extremely powerful compression data technology

- remotely access files & folders from anywhere through automatic one-way or even two-way real-time and scheduled folder synchronization (==> simply AMAZING FEATURE dudes!!)

- share files & encrypted folders with friends, colleagues or clients in remote locations

- automatically backup and restore your Business Data and an unlimited number of PCs online and offline via SSL data transfer and secure data encryption (scheduled and incremental backup options are also supported)

- drag & drop or automatically backup your Outlook Express & Windows Mail in real-time or scheduled times, as if your email messages were files

- backup & restore your emails ONE BY ONE, instead of the large and cumbersome "Outlook .pst files" as any other email backup software usually does, thus allowing you to automatically resume interrupted uploads & downloads as well as migrate your favourite emails from one PC to another (that's COOL, isn't it dudes??)

Why this startling SUITE is FREE of charges is something going far beyond human understanding....LOL!

Download:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Back-Up-and-Recovery/VOSI-biz-Client-Suite.shtml

For more information, please watch the following amazing DEMO VIDEOS showing you what each tool of this awesome suite can do for you free of charge:

http://www.vosi.biz/Downloads/DownloadFileExplorer.aspx

* Paragon Backup & Recovery 2012 Free Edition
http://www.paragon-software.com/home/br-free/download.html

* EaseUS Todo Backup Free Edition
http://www.todo-backup.com/products/home/free-backup-software.htm

* GFI BACKUP 2011
http://www.gfi.com/pages/backup-freeware.asp

Screenshots:
http://www.softpedia.com/progScreenshots/GFI-Backup-Home-Edition-Screenshot-129022.html

And for daily automatic backups of your most important files and folders, give this little FREE (portable) GEM a try:

http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Back-Up-and-Recovery/Daily-backups.shtml

Besides that, for backup purposes, you could also try the freeware “Comodo Time Machine”, which uses a different approach since it quickly restores your PC to an earlier point in time by taking a snapshot of your entire system (including the registry, critical operating system files and user created documents) literally with two mouse clicks:

http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Back-Up-and-Recovery/Comodo-Time-Machine.shtml

But what if your system suddenly didn’t boot in anymore and you forgot to back it up earlier??

Don't worry & be happy!!

http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Back-Up-and-Recovery/Paragon-Rescue-Kit-Express.shtml

So as usual, with the right TIPS & TOOLS, there is no need to pay anything, even for professional backup & restore software like the ones mentioned above!!

Enjoy & Prosper!!

Ciao

I keep wondering about how some of the obviously biased comments pass moderation...
(Way to go if you want more companies to stop participating in the giveawayoftheday project).

Anyways,Abelsoft Backup is fine program that gives you that little bit of extra security in case disaster strikes.

It comes with a linux boot cd that is not only able to create an image of your entire HD (and to restore it afterwards), but it also has more features such as a Firefox browser,a file and partition manager...etc)

The program could use a more colorful skin though. :)
I would welcome an option to create a winPE 'Abelssoft Restore' in future versions of the program.

Hi guys,

this is the Abelssoft support team. We'd like to thank you all for your feedback. For any urgent issues, questions or suggestions, please note that we'll provide free support via contact@abelssoft.net as well (also on the weekend).

We'd like ton give some feedback to some of the questions above:

@5:
-For accessing the handbook, please click non "Manual" on the upper right of the main window.

-Regarding nthe file location: When you use the wizard to create a new backiup job, then the wizard will guide you to "Save at...". On the bottom of this screen, you can change the location where the backup should be saved to. - When restoring the files, you can do the same thing. Abelssoft Backup remembers your folder strucxture so folders and subfolders will be restored as well.

-It's right that restoring files is slover than the backup of files. The reason is that we optimized the application for backups to keep this case as fast as possible. We did this because we believe that you usually do backups much more often than restoring a file. Therefore, we think it's better to make the backup fast, even if restoring takes a bit longer

@13: Yes: We support incremental backups. In the Wizard for new backup jobs, you can use the checkbox "Incremental Backup?" to specify weather or not an incremental backup should be used.

By the way: If you choose to use incremental backups, then we keep old versions of a file meaning that you can access all versions of a file from the backup

@14: Maybe you can send us a short mail at contact@abelssoft.net so that we can help you with this?

@11:
-Yes, we use VSS (Volume Shadow Copy). This allows us to backup files, even if they are locked. Abelssoftt Backup can even backup system files or things like the outlook data file.

-We use AES 256 encryption for high security.

-We do not use ZIP for compression. Instead, the compression is based on Googles snappy algorithm, which is much much faster allowing us to create backups with up to 250 MB/sec if the processor and the HDD are fast enough.

Best greetings,

your Abelssoft support team

I find a lot of comments on this site just as bad so many wingers , plus how can you listen to them as you need to try a package for more than 6 minutes , you need to use on a regular basis plus there is an old saying never look a gift horse in the mouth. Plus most of the comments are not well enough constructed for the person to make use of them for improving the package. I have received so much good and useful from this site and quite a few have paid to upgrade to new version .Any one that takes notice of comments like those of Adam Smith and Nothing is Free need to try and think for themselves Try for yourself , some software you will have use for and others you won’t

No 12 or Mr. Stockmann is right. People explore Windows !! There is much in Windows 7 and 8 that wasn't in xp or Vista and you will find that their is much less need of software for them (than previous versions).

Installed ok, but during my attempt to setup first back-up, I chose no password, but it keeps prompting me for a password. I connected a USB drive with multiple partitions and can't determine on which it will backup. Couldn't get past password. Uninstalling.

Any software that does backup of data is of course welcome, would like to know however, if it does differential and/or incremental backups.
Thank You.

I encounter one thing every time, when stumbling across software-addies to make the life of users "easier". That is, software companies assume the users are simply put "stupid" enough, not knowing the full feature-set of their operating system. Sadly enough, that's not far from the truth. In essence, users are going to buy such software, missing out what Windows has already built in right out of the box.
Other scenario is, take Germany for how consumer markets like the Media-Markt chain is fooling the customer in believe that Libre Office is worth 24 Euros off the shelve. That's not a joke. Yes, you can buy Libre Office in Germany for 24 Euros in a store similar to Best-Buy. That is what they call in Germany "Abzocke". For those of you not knowing, Libre Office is also OpenSource like OpenOffice.

Now, I'm not saying, that Easy Backup is bad or good. But as it is free, you probably won't get hurt if the software is clean. I noticed from a marketing aspect that it has to be a German company. How? Well, the Americans adopt the EASY into EZ for most things, and foreign companies are not yet eager enough to try new naming -conventions. But that's beside the point here.

One other thing to consider with German companies:
Beware of "Abzocke". I am in Germany at the moment and study the customer protection agencies here in Germany. Most things free in Germany can get you seriously right into deep trouble with a so called small-print trap. My advise for you when dealing with Germans is, not to give information that could bind you indefinitely to German contracts. Give a false name and a throwaway email just to be safe. I know what I'm talking here.

On a last note....
Learn Windows.
You will be surprised what goodies there are inside Windows.

Hi,

"download trail version"

Great I always need to have good backup when I am on the Appalachian Trail. In case the bears mess up the hard disk

===========================

The video mentioned compression, no notice if it is proprietary or .zip. No indication whether it is optional (on small backups I like to maintain the file types.) No mention of FTP. Does it use VSS (Volume Shadow Copy ?). No forum.

I sort of like Abelssoft, however the info here is sparse. The emphasis on "easy" concerns me a bit.

Steven

Thank you, this is exactly what I've been looking for. Installation and registration very quick and easy. Received serial number straight away.

Program is very easy to setup, nice clean simple interface, no complicated options. Once you have decided what you want to back up and how often you want to back it up you can forget about it. I'd score this 11 out of 10 :)

A welcome addition to accompany 'Aomei Partition Assistant Professional Edition' offered on Saturday in keeping my computer safe fron internal disasters. Having recently lost valuable photos and documents to a hard drive crash, I was able to recover some files but it took forever, the rest lost completely. It was a new hard drive only few weeks old so never got round to backing it up. This software will take care of backup instead of copying and pasting files, often duplicating same files when updating folders.

Software requires .net framework and e-mail address for key. That is not a bother since most decent software requires these.

Easy to install and very easy to use, although the software skin looks very amateurish like you see in freeware, it does the job and does it well. So THUMBS UP from me.

Create a table showing how this compares to Windows 7 built in backup

Windows 7 backup seems to do 99% of what this is offering already

Just what I wanted, a straightforward (I hope) and easy to use backup software, and even better, for free.

Shame that the popup messages aren't in English!

Despite it's simple interface, and lack of a global help file back up of individual folders is relatively quick; however when creating a back up of my image folder it doesn't allow me to be specific in where I can install the back up to . Also when restoring the images, instead of giving me the location of the saved folder it gives me a list of individual files, but these are not named from the original files.

I have to remember what the backup was called as it doesn't point directly to the saved back up. with only one back up made it was relatively easy to remember, especially as I'd only just created it.

Personally I think this program needs a lot more development. It's certainly got potential, but to me feels unfinished.

(by the way, restoring files takes much longer than backing up) .

There needs to be an easily accessible help file that covers all areas of the program and not as its presented at the moment. I like the way specific help information is presented that's related to the process at hand, but there should also be access to all of the help files at any time. It would be a good idea if the developer included links to video tutorials at least from their web site.

Another issue I found was that not all of the files I'd backed up could be restored. this does not bode well for this program. The problem seems to be with respect to file names being too long. there needs to be a warning given during back up that notifies the user that certain files have not been backed up properly due to the file names being too long.
