Regarding compression, the compression used is Snappy, though GZip and QuickLZ may also be used. In addition to that, LZF and LZMA are also available, but are not referenced.

The backup jobs database and saved passwords are protected using AES, but don't count on it being secure because the program encrypts them with the default key and IV.

If you don't like the GUI, you can always make your own, or integrate the program into your own little utility. Reference Backup.Api.dll in your program using .NET 4.0 and you'll have access to the core backup/restore libraries.

I sent an email to their support team because the program says the emailed key code is invalid but all I got was an auto response email. Not impressed. It's been so long now since I sent it that I'm now angry and uninstalling it.

When I first ran backup, I tried to password protect but it would not let me proceed to next screen. So, I proceeded without a password. Now that I have created a backup, I cannot find the option to add password protection. What am I missing here?

Other than that, I like it so far.

On file formats: Backup file consists of a SQLite index with chunks of file after that. The SQLite index is AES encrypted, while the data is only Caeser encrypted. The key used to decrypt the database is base64 of the SHA256 hash of your entered password, and the Caeser key is the length of the SQLite password.

also if you disable ngen service any installation of other software that compiles MSIL down to native code during software installation will give you an installation error.

As ngen is well managed by the .net framework you don't need to mess with it. Keep it as is. It's all OK as it is.

NGEN needs a little more detail here that users know what it is.
So, I will do that.

NGEN is part of the .Net SDK (Software Development Kit) to create a native image of intermediate language code. So, what happens is that the .net exe is compiled to native code before JIT compilation instead during JIT and thus makes a .Net executable run like native code with a slight performance increase. Every ngen image in order to run MUST have the ngen service enabled NOT disabled....

Answer: you MUST reboot from CD to make 1:1 backup HD to CD snapshot sets -- can't be done in background while using the computer.

Should I try and get back to you all?

Well, it downloaded, then failed to write a CD (wrong ISO writer found), so I exited the program to see if I could burn the ISO file myself ... and the program had erased it as if it were a dispensable temp file(!) ... so I'm re-downloading the ISO file AGAIN, argh!

It would ne a neat utility feature, but hardly something I could recommend to customers: "... close everything, reboot from CD, then run a stack of blank CDs to copy the hard drive in 700 MB increments, hope it all works, then reboot to the hard drive, save the CDs, and remember to do it again whenever you change anything important, making the first stack of CDs an ob$elete wa$te of time and money ..."

Note: I deleted my first backup (test to second hard drive directory), but the program thinks it still exists!

Svwen -- anybody -- I want:

(a) the backup to LOOK like the original file structure, visible and usable in Windows Explorer, and with anything such as in MS Word [ File > Open ...],

and

(b) to copy long file- and directory-names, and active files.

That's it.

Stop it already with "EASY" anything -- this program is stupid in that it is not smart in that it is non-standard, it requires perhaps this program to restore rather than being able to use any other pre-existing way to inspect and use the backup, and there's no way to independently confirm and verify that a backup has been made, let alone any way to actually USE the backup if you ever get disconnected form this program.

FREE XCopy, XXCopy, and RoboCopy create 100% standard output that can be verified and USED immediately ANYWHERE ANYTIME.

However, each has compromises, such as dealing with long file names (over 256 characters including directory names), or copying active files, and they work from a command line (but can be scheduled or batch-filed to automate them), and other folks here and across the Internet can list other pros and cons of XCopy, XXCopy, and RoboCopy IF ANY NEW PROGRAMMER WANT TO KNOW WHERE TO START WITH A NEW BACKUP PROGRAM.

All we need is a program to reliably capture long filename / directory name combinations AND backup active files such as MS Outlook PST files and such.

Look, I LOVE Sven Abels, but really, NOT ANOTHER PROPRIETARY, NON-STANDARD so-called "BACKUP" PROGRAM, please ... I beg you!

Just having a CD does not answer either of my points. Try again.

I've been hearing about different types of back-ups and I am wondering which type is best? How does taking a snap shot of the drive safe anything? I haven't used back-up before since I never had the need, I always saved 'my documents' and other images and stuff on a CD. Then if something happened, I just did a restore on my system, reloaded any software from the installation disks, and then reloaded my saved CDs. But I recently received a scare when I lost my video drivers and didn't want to restore because I would then have lost the lovely GOTD programs that I got. Do some back-up programs condense the computer information that I could store on a CD or a Flash Drive? I have XP pro sp3 and have a 76.6 GB hard drive.

I researched backup early last year. I am a backup addict and used to spend a few hours per week with automated backup programs of all sorts. I even had arranged offsite storage of DVD discs with my neighbor. Then,through my research, I found backblaze.

In addition to the hours per week I also found that I spend more money than I realized for backup programs, supplies, drives and services etc. I was about to buy a blu ray drive when I did my research. I have never looked back.

Now 2 minutes a week, $50 a year (4.18 per month) instead of $90 average per year I am no longer a backup addict.

You owe it to your backup, money, time and patience to check out backblaze. I have already used it once and restored 100% of my data. Note: It does not backup your Operating System and that was a shock to me. But I realized that I always reloaded the OS every time I
bought a new disk drive anyhow. So that it not really needed.

Please study your options, as I did, and make up your own mind. Also, I do not own stock nor know anyone at backblaze so my opinions are my own with encumbrance. Anyone who buys anything else or wastes time and money without considering this option is nuts!

VC100_CRT_x86 is a Microsoft Visual Studio C Runtime package for 32 bit software. That means it is needed for Easy Backup to work. It's nothing to be worried about. Also Microsoft .Net Framework 4 is needed to run easy backup.

If you run Windows 7, installing these two components should not bare any risk if it is from Microsoft. If you run XP, you need Service Pack 3 or it will fail.

I have worked with backup software for years. This software, as well as a lot of others, tell you how great they are at backing up your system. They say little or nothing about restoring in the case of system failure.

If your system has 1 partition of 1 terabyte, as many systems are shipped, and have a HD failure, can you restore to the 500 Gig Drive that you have. I do not want to wait a week to get a new HD to get my system going.

If my motherboard fails, can I restore to a new computer? Most backup software does can not handle different storage drivers. It is very hard, maybe impossible, to do this manually.

Most software is great at making backups. Very few handle restore well in the real world. Some that work well - Old Norton Ghost - True Image - EaseUs ToDo 4.0 Free.

This one gets a thumbs down.

I've found Microsoft's freebie "SyncToy" to be very reliable and suit my needs.

Anyways,Abelsoft Backup is fine program that gives you that little bit of extra security in case disaster strikes.

It comes with a linux boot cd that is not only able to create an image of your entire HD (and to restore it afterwards), but it also has more features such as a Firefox browser,a file and partition manager...etc)

The program could use a more colorful skin though. :)
I would welcome an option to create a winPE 'Abelssoft Restore' in future versions of the program.

-Regarding nthe file location: When you use the wizard to create a new backiup job, then the wizard will guide you to "Save at...". Abelssoft Backup remembers your folder strucxture so folders and subfolders will be restored as well.

-It's right that restoring files is slover than the backup of files. The reason is that we optimized the application for backups to keep this case as fast as possible. We did this because we believe that you usually do backups much more often than restoring a file. Therefore, we think it's better to make the backup fast, even if restoring takes a bit longer

@13: Yes: We support incremental backups. In the Wizard for new backup jobs, you can use the checkbox "Incremental Backup?" to specify weather or not an incremental backup should be used.

By the way: If you choose to use incremental backups, then we keep old versions of a file meaning that you can access all versions of a file from the backup

Installed ok, but during my attempt to setup first back-up, I chose no password, but it keeps prompting me for a password. I connected a USB drive with multiple partitions and can't determine on which it will backup. Couldn't get past password. Uninstalling.

Any software that does backup of data is of course welcome, would like to know however, if it does differential and/or incremental backups.

I encounter one thing every time, when stumbling across software-addies to make the life of users "easier". That is, software companies assume the users are simply put "stupid" enough, not knowing the full feature-set of their operating system. Sadly enough, that's not far from the truth. In essence, users are going to buy such software, missing out what Windows has already built in right out of the box.
Other scenario is, take Germany for how consumer markets like the Media-Markt chain is fooling the customer in believe that Libre Office is worth 24 Euros off the shelve. That's not a joke. Yes, you can buy Libre Office in Germany for 24 Euros in a store similar to Best-Buy. That is what they call in Germany "Abzocke". For those of you not knowing, Libre Office is also OpenSource like OpenOffice.

Now, I'm not saying, that Easy Backup is bad or good. But as it is free, you probably won't get hurt if the software is clean. I noticed from a marketing aspect that it has to be a German company. How? Well, the Americans adopt the EASY into EZ for most things, and foreign companies are not yet eager enough to try new naming -conventions. But that's beside the point here.

One other thing to consider with German companies:
Beware of "Abzocke". I am in Germany at the moment and study the customer protection agencies here in Germany. Most things free in Germany can get you seriously right into deep trouble with a so called small-print trap. My advise for you when dealing with Germans is, not to give information that could bind you indefinitely to German contracts. Give a false name and a throwaway email just to be safe. I know what I'm talking here.

Program is very easy to setup, nice clean simple interface, no complicated options. Once you have decided what you want to back up and how often you want to back it up you can forget about it. I'd score this 11 out of 10 :)

A welcome addition to accompany 'Aomei Partition Assistant Professional Edition' offered on Saturday in keeping my computer safe fron internal disasters. Having recently lost valuable photos and documents to a hard drive crash, I was able to recover some files but it took forever, the rest lost completely. It was a new hard drive only few weeks old so never got round to backing it up. This software will take care of backup instead of copying and pasting files, often duplicating same files when updating folders.

Software requires .net framework and e-mail address for key. That is not a bother since most decent software requires these.

Easy to install and very easy to use, although the software skin looks very amateurish like you see in freeware, it does the job and does it well. So THUMBS UP from me.

Despite it's simple interface, and lack of a global help file back up of individual folders is relatively quick; however when creating a back up of my image folder it doesn't allow me to be specific in where I can install the back up to . Also when restoring the images, instead of giving me the location of the saved folder it gives me a list of individual files, but these are not named from the original files.

I have to remember what the backup was called as it doesn't point directly to the saved back up. with only one back up made it was relatively easy to remember, especially as I'd only just created it.

Personally I think this program needs a lot more development. It's certainly got potential, but to me feels unfinished.

(by the way, restoring files takes much longer than backing up) .

There needs to be an easily accessible help file that covers all areas of the program and not as its presented at the moment. I like the way specific help information is presented that's related to the process at hand, but there should also be access to all of the help files at any time. It would be a good idea if the developer included links to video tutorials at least from their web site.

Another issue I found was that not all of the files I'd backed up could be restored. this does not bode well for this program. The problem seems to be with respect to file names being too long. there needs to be a warning given during back up that notifies the user that certain files have not been backed up properly due to the file names being too long.
