Download music from 1000+ sites anytime and anywhere!

In times where thousands of files are located on a computer, sometimes it is very hard to maintain an observation. This very easy to use program helps you to detect duplicate files on your machine, on external hard drives, on CDs, DVDs, USB sticks and camera cards.

Since each user defines duplicate files different concerning file name, file size, attributes, last modification time and so on you can determine by yourself what the program should look for. It is also possible to compare unique CRC32 checksums of each file.

After the selection of any path or drive you like the program checks all files in all folders and subfolders and compares them with each other, so definitely no duplicate file will be forgotten.

When the search is done, you will see a list where the found duplicate files are categorized concerning their file size to make it even easier. Now you can select any of it and decide if you like to execute it, to delete it or to take a view to the folder where this file is located.

PocketAces wrote, "... The developers that provide software for evaluation at GAOTD are doing this in hopes of getting a real paying customer (Good Luck with that here!) – and not to provide software to those who can’t or won’t pay for anything ..."

But that seems contrary to the whole purpose of GOTD -- either they are giving something away, or they are not, either they are building a market and surviving their competition, or they are not.

I had the same problem as others. I tried two different, valid, email addresses and got back the same message as user #1.

Free giveaway? Really? I think we were scammed by this company.

This was a waste of time to download and install this app.

The above comments pretty much describe the value and effectiveness of the program but nobody mentioned the apparent ethics (or lack thereof.)

Comment #14 (by "Doom") should be a total red flag. It is obviously a ringer comment posted by the app author. (Whom, I might add, is not too bright - posting a comment in the same bastardized English as is on his web site. Did he really think we wouldn't notivce???)

The second big red flag is all of the "Awards" on his home page. Most of them just says that the SW is virus free. On others, the SW doesn't exist, it gets a five star rating but no one has reviewed it, or, at best, a rating without any details of a five year old product.

I'm a bit didappointed in GAOTD for not vetting this app better.

Could be useful, is it possible to include a way of showing file thumbnails?
Sometimes file names are not exactly the same, or when transferred the date changes etc.

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to mention that I agree with #20 - Peter Blaise with the fact that this is NOT the same version as the one on their website. Apparently the same version 5.00 but if you try to install that one, you get a message that the key (key given with this giveaway) is good for an older version of this software. Care to explain 1-abc?

Even though the giveaway is almost over, it's NOT too late to give an answer! PLUS, we, GOTD, have a forum in order to post comments and/or answers. In this case, an explanation would be appreciated.

Thanks GOTD for all your hard work.

Just two things:
@ #5 Mark Magill: You can minimize virtualy ALL open windows, by pressing Windows Key + M. Repeat, and ALL windows re-emerge :)

I totaly agree with #30 @promytius about English in the company's site.
I had a hard time understanding several products's descriptions. Phrases like, "decide by your own if you prefer...", instead of "decide yourself if you prefere...", or simply, "you decide...", are too wrong, even for us, non native English speakers. What I 'm saying is, you are losing customers, not only because people don't trust "bad English" sites, but also because program descriptions are too dificult to understand...

First of all, I would like to thank GOTD for this offer. Secondly, I'd like to thank Peter Blaise (comment 20) for his thorough review! That takes time to type up all of that. I should know as I have done the same thing before only to have it NOT be accepted by the moderator here and on GGOTD, which kinda makes you mad after spending all of that time doing it!
Third, I'd like to thank Giovanni (comment 15) for his alternatives list!

As for duplicates, the one I always use is CloneMaster
http://softbytelabs.com/us/cm/index.html
Although I must admit I'm still using an old v2.19 on my XP SP3 system and haven't tried the latest version (5.05)... LOL
By the way, CloneMaster does a binary comparison of all files, to those who know what that means...

And lastly, I recommend to everybody here to go to
http://mail.yahoo.com
and sign up for a free Yahoo email to use here for these giveaways (and recommend using ONLY for these GOTD giveaways!). That's what I finally did after getting tired of 10minutemail.com, etc. being rejected by the giveaway authors frequently! It didn't take long at all and I don't remember having to give much, if any, personal info to get an email address. And so far it has been a 100% success rate here...

Long live GOTD and GGOTD!

@ #32 FooSaa, stop being a idiot. The meaning is to use the email address that you use for everyday activity and not a "throwaway" email address. It is not that difficult to understand. It is stated pretty clearly in the licensing agreement. Comments such as yours are not clever but make you petty and childish.

The developers that provide software for evaluation at GAOTD are doing this in hopes of getting a real paying customer (Good Luck with that here!) - and not to provide software to those who can't or won't pay for anything.

I am from the US and many here seem to be offended by companies who come here to test their software and English is not their native language. There way too many rude comments about these companies - just stop it and grow up.

GAOTD hopefully welcomes all no matter what language you speak.

Well, just from reading the comments and especially the posts by
1-abc.net, I decided not to install this program. The words "SPAM" flash in front of my eyes after reading the company's comments about not allowing us to use a disposable email address. What difference does it make to them, unless they want to use the email address provided to send spam (and who knows what)???? Seems fishy and not at all professional.

I'm definitely bewildered...

Software websites need to make a good first impression if they hope to keep a clients interest and convey a sense of smooth functionality and professionalism.

I went to their website, using IE 8, and found this gray font on gray background mess that is almost impossible to read. And the left-side panel, showing their index of software, uses a tiny (even on my 22 inch monitor) light blue font that also disappears into the gray background. The result is a site that looks awful, is difficult to comprehend, hard to navigate, and certainly not "accessible".

It gave me a very negative first impression. In fact, if I weren't researching today's GAOTD offering, I would have left the vendor's site in mere seconds, as I'm sure many have before me.

It's like walking into a store where all the lights are off and everything is filthy.

I'm also befuddled about the awards attributed to this software. They have links to websites that give the software a 1-out-of-5 rating AND a 5 star award...?

My findings:

Softpedia: 2.3/5

Freenew: 2.5/5

I found those ratings, but I could not find an independent review of this product.

All-in-all, the unprofessional website, the inconclusiveness of the available research, plus the comments above from the other GAOTD'ers, tells me that this Giveaway will not be a takeaway for me.

Cheers.

From Post #24
@ #22 (DocSid):

Please visit our support website to see the license again, check especially paragraph 4. If you think that your e-mail address should not collide please send an e-mail to support@1-abc.net and we will help you as soon as possible.

Paragraph 4 from the EULA
4.
If you should obtain a free trial key or a free full version key from The Vendor website or if you register your full version online this procedure also includes a subscription to The Vendor's newsletter, if not discribed different on the website. It is required that you use your main and real e-mail address which is the address used for your daily messages. Registration with an e-mail address only created to receive a key but no newsletter to this main address or registration with an e-mail including words like 'spam', 'registration', 'regkey' or similar expressions helping you to avoid to get The Vendor's newsletter to this main address is not allowed and does not allow you to use The Software. You can unsubscribe from the newsletter in each issue. Except the data you enter by yourself and your IP address no more personal data is saved.

So, in other words, to receive your software "free" we have to agree to receive your newsletter at least one time after which we can cancel it and you will honor the cancellation of the newsletter and maybe never send us any unsolicited mail again. That sounds reasonable.

Can you explain in plain English what does below paragraph explains?

Like "e-mail address should not collide" means?

"If you think that your e-mail address should not collide please send an e-mail to support@1-abc.net and we will help you as soon as possible."

Do you have any blacklisted domains? Can you list them for us to use an alternative? We don't have all the time in the world to repeatedly check and raise a support ticket for a software which contains zillion free alternatives!

For the software registration and since it is a giveaway, it does not matter (it should not matter) what email address I give. Either my spam filtered email or a temporary mail address. Sorry for being arrogant, but i just don't understand correctly. I am sure fellow GAOTD users will agree with me too!

Marketing feedback: do not try to sell things with a language you do not speak and do not understand. EX: "with 1-abc.net Duplicate Finder you will never have to care about them anymore!"
If you spoke the language you would realize the critical difference between "worry" and "care."
I do not want to worry about my files;
but I will ALWAYS CARE for them; you just don't realize what you are saying, so get someone who understands the native meanings of words in the native language. What you said in effect, is "this program will make you forget about your files."
The Sun's out - I don't care about that anymore
Supper's ready - I don't care about that anymore.
See the critical difference you missed? You are actually trying to use a Negative message to sell your product - won't work. Try to find a native English speaking editor to review your copy.
It's like walking down the street with a bucket of apples and yelling, "You don't want these apples!"

The Good

1-abc.net Duplicate Finder is extremely easy to use and will not eat too much of the computer resources. Returned results are grouped according to their size and can be executed from the program with a single click.

The Bad

The list of options available is short and shallow and the software is not capable of checking the content of the files to look for a true exact match.

If not double checked you can end up deleting important files as the application can pick up many false positives during the scan.

Considering its functionality I would say the price is a bit steep.

The Truth

Sure there are similar applications that cost more, but they do a much thorough check of the detected files and you can be sure the results are true duplicates.

During our testing it failed to make finer detection by checking the content of the files, thus returning false positives that may matter in real life. However, you are free to try and test the application for yourselves and then decide upon buying it or not.

I'm duplicating my 'improvement' idea from above here, since the user interface [above] was acting wonky for me. my improvement suggestion:

make duplicate files into hard [NTFS] links, as has been done in unix since the beginning of time [almost]. That way, the file is always where you need it, can be manipulated, copied, deleted, whatever; and all other software referencing the file still works. The file is actually only erased from disk when the last [hard] link is 'deleted'. This capability is on your hard drives NOW - but no one uses it. pity.

Sorry but don`t trust duplicate file finders no matter who makes it. It`s impossible for any company to know the exact programs and configurations of each and every computer which is needed to determine which files are duplicate junk files or legitimate files.
Also will not give out my real email address to any more software venders as its almost impossible to keep up with the spam that I am already receiving. there is no legitimate reason that a company needs your email address and as far as I am concerned GAOTD should not allow this type of registration process, a software key can easily be included with the readme file and most big named software vendors do it that way.

ok, i just checked it and ... well, not impressed at all, there are out there many 100% free apps of this kind better! ;)
with installation/registration/running/... no problem, but still no thumb up, i don't give thumb up for such things but only for more serious ones, like functionality, interfaces/GUIs..., ease of use ... blah
so, i chosen to scan for files (duplicates of course) bigger than 5 MB but seems that scan still for all ... O.o or maybe not scan for others though, but just show 'em all (the others) as 0 found? not sure ...
i don't like that you can only set a min. or max. size and not both, let's say duplicates with size >X but <Y ...
could be used even more types of filters (what in other free apps are) and to combine them easier, i don't like to go all the time in Options to set filters or other options, i would liked em to be rather in the main interface ...
like though that you can save results (at least that option should been once you pay for the app, not now, i mean in general, that is a comercial app)
overall? no thumb down, neither down ... but, however is no way worth 20$! :P max. 10 if not even less with all those free and yet better alternatives ...
and with this ocassion, cuz unfortunately i rarely can post a comment here (seems comments are stopped way earlier than 24 hrs end, and i usually download and test apps kinda late) :( few other "off-topic" words:
-don't understand problem(s) of those complaining about Givani's posts! i LOVE 'em! :P also complaining about those who criticize an app or another .. wth? i, even if not agree with most part of them, still have no problem with that, maybe even like that; wth guys? we should be enough smart to choose what is good and what not! :P or ultimately you just could ignore them :P seeing others comments saved me enough times enough time what i'd lost installing bad apps
-also, don't understand also those problems and complains related to registration of apps (when is needed emal especially) and apps not running and/or giving weird errors, if i remember right i never ever had any problem registering an app by email! not even got the email too late (excepting a single case if i rememb. right)
sry but i think that is about your email client or provider respectively for registration problems, as for apps bad functioning or at all, about YOUR windows installation! there rather are the problems; here, again, if i remember right i never had any problem with any app from GAOTD (excepting small obvious ones) but not, still, big ones OS related problems (possible, not very sure, again, only a single case)
-and last thing for now, saw some guys complaining about that 24 hrs limit to install the apps, well, i have not this problem, i can understand developers and GAOTD team not according more, BUT, i still have a small question ... how/when are emails sent? for those who subscribed to GAOTD byt email, cos i noticed that i receive the email 2 hrs after the giveaway of a day starts :P :( they are sent to all users at once? or? any possibility as i get my email faster/sooner? bellow the 2 hrs difference? preferable as soon as possible after thegiveaway starts; right, many could think that i simply could just visit the site before to receive the email .. ok, but sometime i forget, or just neglect too early and later again, forget, ... blah but my Inbox i check regularly and very often, seeing the email from Giveawaysoftheday i no more can forget ... :))

A VERY nice day for all! users and GAOTD team! ty for all you work! :)
(PS: scuse my bad english please :P :) )

MY REVIEW OF GOTD 1-ABC.NET DUPLICATE FINDER, THE "GOTD" VERSION OF THE SOFTWARE:

This is a different version that the one on the manufacturer's web site -- so what exactly are they actually giving away?

Since it's NOT the public version, we don't get updates and patches or the ability to reinstall after crash ... we get 1-day install, with no updates, versus the public version that gets 30-days free reinstall and updates, and the paid version that gets forever reinstall and updates.

It seems to only compare files in one directory tree, it seems unable to compare two otherwise unrelated directories of our choice (say, two CDs, or "My Documents" compared to a backup of "My Documents"), nor can it compare across partitions or drives or over a network ... BUT, click the top menu bar and find [ Functions ] / [ Add Another Folder To Search ], and there it is -- the ability to compare separate folders, including Network shares -- why hide this?

While on the menu, I see [ Upgrade to 1-ABC,net Cleaning Box ], which leads to a $40 program that includes: "... Duplicate Finder - Find identical files on your computer or on external drives! ..." ... I just downloaded the demo and it does not offer any additional sophistication or control.

It seems incredibly slow -- over an hour ago, I pointed it to my 80 GB "backup" directory that has 300,000 files, and it still has not responded with results (this computer: XP, 2400 MHz x 2, 4 GB). It shows a "thermometer" progress bar that looks to be about 5% done after more than an hour. What do you think, kill it and uninstall?

Wait a minute, I clicked on the "Checking for duplicates ..." window and suddenly it re-started scanning as if it had been paused, and started quickly(!) moving the progress bar -- does this GO INACTIVE, GO TO SLEEP if we toggle to another screen? How would I EVER have gotten a result if I had not clicked on the window and accidentally woken it up in my effort to KILL IT?!?

So, it wasted an hour of my time by just sitting there waiting, NOT running, and NOT telling me it had paused?!?

Seriously?

Wow, now the results are there (after an hour wasted time) ... and they are in a little tiny window?!?

I have 207 duplicates to decide on (actually pretty clean!), and I have a miserly little 572 x 133 pixel window to view them ALL through?!?

Seriously?

Why does it not allow me to resize the window to take advantage of my gargantuan screen so I can tell what's there?

I right-clicked on ONE file in a group of many duplicates, it offered to delete that ONE file, I accepted, then ALL OTHER RESULTS DISAPPEARED, and I so now have to re-search all over again to make a decision on the next file IN THAT DUPLICATE GROUP, not even moving to the next file group?

Seriously?

Uninstall it goes!

Seriously!

It seems unable to use the benefits of the Microsoft Windows Vista and 7 "alias" symbolic links and junction points to permit redirecting duplicate executables to one single file instance -- that would be a GREAT feature, to actually build an executable farm under, say, C:\Program Files\Executables\*.* and put in ONE copy of any duplicated executable, and turn all others into aliases ... but hard drive space is cheap, and programmers like different versions of executables, and programmers like their own executables to be in their own relative directory tree, so give up removing active duplicates.

COMPETITIVE SOFTWARE:

One example: http://www.iobit.com/advancedsystemcarepro.html IOBit ASC Advanced System Care for $20 includes, among DOZENS of tools, a terrific "cloned files scanner" (for a multiple drives OR one folder tree) that KEEPS a constant database during other ASC scans (for malware, and such) of the entire drive, and so it's "duplicate search results" appears to INSTANTLY pop up a list, allowing you to decide on each file pair (or group), what to do, what to toggle on and off, what to delete iteratively or en mass, and so on.

ASC is a WHOLE SUITE of smart, sophisticated utilities for $20, 1-abc.net Duplicate Finder is ONE unsophisticated tool for $20.

And as mentioned, there are FREE alternatives that are equal or even more sophisticated. I believe I have one that shows progress live so I can start acting on intermediate results without waiting for other results.

And, again, the "giveaway of the day" is NOT the public program, does NOT include updates, patches, or reinstall capability.

==========

Process to get Activation Key was easy and smoothly registered.
Tested it.
You need to go into Menu > Functions to Add another folder to search.
It will then find duplicates in the two folders.

Pretty decent app today, but it's nothing special in my view.

Developers of software like this one should offer outstanding features which cannot be found in freeware alternatives, otherwise it doesn't make sense charge 20 bucks for an app like this GAOTD.

not sure about every single software of them however i think that this is a good company! this i never had it before not even downloaded and tested it now but i know for sure something, i cann't wait for a giveaway of their program 1-abc.net Right-Click Configurator! saw somewhere some screenshots of it (maybe even right on their website?) and i liked it!
about this one? maybe later ... but i doubt though, ie i mean i usually ... don't use duplicate finders, but well, everything has its time/beginning! :))

Installed easy enough on XP sp3. Too many options and features missing, but here are some;-

No ability to search accross partitions, drives.
No side by side thumbnails to compare 'duplicated' images.
No filter to search particular file types.
No filter to search and compare images that are identical but slight variation in size for eg images with watermarks added/removed, or re-saved JPGs.
No file size information on duplicate files found, just files grouped by size eg '100kb to 250kb'. This is of no practical use.
Sorry. Thanks for the offer but not for me this time.

To test it I copied a folder with about 20 files, but it didn't find any duplicates (only file size and checksum checked).

Even if it had found dups, the list is much too small, the window can not be resized.

Watch out about deleting supposed duplicate files. Often they can be the same size but have different contents. If deleted, some can severely crimp your installed programs and even Windows. Not worth the risk with 'saving a few meg' then having the pain of reinstalling apps or the OS.

I use DupKiller: http://www.dupkiller.net/index_en.html, which is always Freeware, and has a lot more options then this program. I can also make a full, byte-by-byte compare of those files that have same size. You can compare from start or end-of-file. You can require a 100% match, or any other percentage. Those groups that have less than 100% match are flagged with color. Matches are grouped, and presented on a lost. Here you can choose that files from certain catalogs will be auto-selected, while files in other catalogs will not be selected when in the duplicate list. This is useful if you got a library, and lots of new files to be added. Den you auto-select duplicates found among the new files, and keep the duplicate partner that is already in the library. DupKiller has an extension that looks for partial match in file names. This is very useful for music files, where the track name would be the match key, but it can be before or after artist name, album name, track number, etc.

Vista 32bit. Downloaded, Installed, Registered just fine. I was not really pleased with the double mail situation for getting key for registering. But, since already on their mailing list from other GAOTD, figured, why not?

Very fast search but came incorrect with duplicates because the options were set too specific. Tried variants and still not really worked because sizes or names not EXACTLY the same as required. No fuzzy logic searches in the options.

Program has many options for finding duplicates. However, none of them including across drives or directories/folders. Makes this sort of useless in my book.

However, thanks GAOTD and 1-abc.net for the try.

Download and registration went fine, although I don't really like the several-step process. Program installed on Vista Home Premium, accepted registration code (which arrived promptly) without incident and appears to work as designed so far.

One big annoyance is that you can not minimize the application! If it's running, it's smack in the middle of the screen and the only option was to cancel the search, which was only occasionally responsive. The program is processor-intense (which I expected) and somewhat slow (also expected, considering the task) and I don't mind that, but at least let me minimize it out of the way.
