@57: That would not work. Drivers must normally be registered with the operating system. Some drivers need the information on which mode to run this (Kernel / System / User Mode). Also need some drivers safety information that must be entered in the registry. My good intentioned Tip: Do not install drivers manually, there is good reason the software is doing this correctly.

@ # 06 Besides drivers frequently being removed from sites, not everyone can afford the internet n many have limited internet n spend a lot of time looking for drivers or downloading stuff repeatedly.
Some people can't think outside of their tiny little world.

TO 56 & 57:

I am using the previous Driver Magician GOTD, and IT DOES BACKUP all the files needed to re-install drivers. For example, my Bluetooth device driver backup includes 4 files:
btwusb.cat
btwusb.sys
drvbck.pdb
oem26.inf
And I have successfully re-installed these drivers at least two times in the past year or so, and once was to a completely different machine.

I was going to praise Frenk @37
But just noticed Softtest @56

I would appreciate feedback from others on this matter.

Could I partly do what Frenk suggests -
Burn the contents of the Drivers folder to a CD.
Then later when I do a fresh install of XP I could go to Device manager, and for each needy bit of hardware, select install/update driver, and browse to the CD

Would that work ?

@37: What a nonsense! Backup driver files is not enough, i.e. the registry entries and inf/cat files are also needed. So please tell people no bullshit.

I have been using this software since version 3.32. Backup and restore work just fine for me. I have not tried the updater because I only update on an as needed basis, and I have not needed to.
I like that you can create an auto setup package so that drivers can be reinstalled without this program. I also like being able to make a backup of folders with the drivers in them. This way I can see exactly what drivers each device is using. This could help in troubleshooting later if I should have a problem with a device.
Thank you GOATD and GoldSolution Software.

I have the previous GOTD version; it is worthwhile and I never had a problem with the driver backup "expiring" like some said. I only used the "backup drivers to folders" so that the backups are not compressed or compiled into an .exe file, and so are ready to recover at any emergency - AND you can pick and choose which driver to reinstall yourself. AND I NEVER used the "check for driver updates" options. Like others said, why would you gamble on new hardware drivers, if your machine is working fine? Especially in this day when every update comes with new SPYWARE, sending your personal data off to timbuktoo behind your back. You need this software to make a backup of your drivers that are working now. This Driver Magician is an excellent GOTD.

I only use it for backup purposes and download drivers from the vendor's site, I'm not sure if Driver Magician fully supports 64-bit systems yet. When installing a new driver I first make a most recent backup with Driver Magician. If it so happens the new driver 'breaks' something, I just uninstall it and run the auto-setup package and viola. If it works, I make a new auto-setup package but I keep the old one just in case.
I keep five most recent auto-setup packages on my backup drive just in case I ever need them. They work even when Driver Magician isn't installed.
Thumbs up and thanks to GoldSolution Software and GOTD.

"An excellent free alternative is Double Driver:
http://www.boozet.org/dd.htm"

Double driver is an excellent tool but, it is not a replacement for this software as it does not identify unknown devices and does not scan for driver updates.

Secondly, the rule of thumb when it comes to drivers is if it isn't broke don't fix it. Drivers are the number one cause of BSODs.

As a computer tech I have several programs I use to locate and install drivers when building/refurbishing computers. However, a driver app that is not portable has no place in my toolbox. This software can only be used on the computer you install it on today. Chances are, however, the computer you are on now doesn't have missing drivers or unknown devices. Nevertheless, once you update your driver(s), should you so desire to take that risk, you will have no practical need for this software.

In addition, these programs tend to want to create start-up entries and continuously run in the background. Note that running a program in the background does NOT mean it doesn't use system resources.

To the developer. This software is what I call "Trickware". It scans for driver updates erroneously leading the user to believe the drivers need updating. Drivers do not need updating unless the device in question is giving problems resulting from the current driver whether it be a stability issue or something else. Moreover, without portability, this app is meaningless.

Installation went smooth after disabling Avast for 10 min!

Yet I have a question due to lack of understanding..
Is there a difference between win 7-64 and win 7-32 drivers?

I installed it on my win 7-64, and it installed as a 32 application, yet it was able to detect several out dated drivers on my 64 driver.

Shall I trust it and go for the update, or is there any precaution that I need to take care off before updating the installed drivers?

Drivers' Backup went like a charm!

Thank you

Okay, I downloaded and installed this morning with no problems, everything appears to work alright except the download speeds for the driver updates. One of the driver updates is only 97.8 MB and is downloading at just 6.3 kb/s on a 50MB broadband connection so a big thumbs down on that point, otherwise pretty good, but wouldn't buy it.

Also I use the free program Speccy to tell me what type of motherboard, CPU, memory, video card, network adapter, for their make and model, and then go to the manufactures site to get the latest drivers.

Good advice from Fred Langa at Windows Secrets, "A new release of the driver package may be intended to correct a bug or glitch within any one of the many products and versions the package supports. But the new driver version might have absolutely nothing to do with your specific setup. If you constantly chase the newest driver versions, you could be churning your system to no purpose. You risk introducing new bugs, instabilities, and other trouble for no good reason."

This is the kind of software the utility exists only if it is portable.
It should produce a executable file that reinstall all drivers automatically.
Besides that, 30 bucks is to much to a theoretical back up maker.

If you want to save your current drivers just do this:

C:\Windows\system32\drivers and copy to an USB drive

for win 7 64bit also include:

C:\Windows\system\drivers and copy to a USB drive

All done and you can copy it back when fresh re-install of your OS is finished.

I installed this couple of years ago and when I had to re-install the drivers last month do to computer crash, the drivers did not installed correctly, when I try to update online it ask me to purchase their software first and update to the current version in order to re-install.

Blackmailing the customers is the worst kind of business model to have.
I'm skipping this offer, it does not work and not many drivers will be saved when instructed to do so. Do an OS back up and that is all you need. Depending on this company for drivers, will not make you happy.

There is a good chance that your computer may be infected with a malware when downloading form unknown Chinese servers.

I'm having issues downloading the updated drivers - I use Comcast cable and it took over two hours to download a 40 meg updated driver file. When the download finally completed - the file was corrupt. Tried downloading a different file on a different computer (which was only 17 megs) - it took over an hour and was also corrupted.
I see that the file is coming from www.driverbulk.com - maybe it is a problem on their end or maybe they are overloaded today.
I am trying again to download the files and i will update GOTD when finished.

Double Driver has been mentioned several times already. It is a program that I like and use.

I have tried a few programs that want to go out on the web and fetch the "latest" drivers. None of the ones I have seen can do the job. The drivers that they find are frequently incomplete, or not suitable for my particular OS, or in some cases, older than the drivers they are seeking to replace!

And when that happens, I'm glad I backed up my original, working, drivers with Double Driver.

Installed this on the last offer. This vendore has a habit of reverting the software to "trial"... so don't expect this to run more than 60 days, unless you are skillful enough to save your initial registry entries.

You can search the web and find many instances of lost registration issues for DM. I wrote DM support and their reply was to wait until the next time it was offered here. Sounds like a scam to sell licenses by misrepresenting a trial install.

A useful program for me.
Installed fine on WindowsXP. It found 32 non-Microsoft drivers. When I selected Driver Backup - Search All Drivers it included the Microsoft drivers and found over 100 drivers. Some of them were from hardware no longer installed in my PC. Driver Magician has a Delete Driver function in Tools so I can remove the unwanted old drivers.
Drivers can be backed up several ways using Options including an auto-setup package as an exe file.

I haven't tried the Update Driver function yet because I want to do a system backup first as a safety measure.

As many have said, this has been offered at least twice and I've used it. Program is very good and reliable but, again as mentioned, after about three months, it stops working. I do not see the point of offering your software like this, other than to try and sell a license.

I'm not sure I want to do all the installing a third time.

To be fair, it will find and provide updates for audio, video, BIOS systems etc., which are the main ones you want. However, many computer manufacturers tweak drivers to suit their products and care is needed that you do not install a headache.

If it ain't broke..................

I'm reluctant to d/load because of the three month nonsense but I have not checked certain drivers for a while.

GAOTD: Can't you offer another provider's product for our comparison?

That would be great! :)

It's sometimes best not to update drivers, unless you're actually having a problem. Newer drivers don't always work with older software and hardware. And occasionally a bug in a new driver can cause problems. For this reason it can be a good idea to save older drivers. I have run into this issue on at least one occasion.

If I really need an update, I prefer to do it manually because it's way too easy to screw up Windows with automated tasks you don't know what they do exactly (where the updated drivers come from?).

I've never understood driver programs; they are usually advertised as FREE to download, ans then you pay for them; most programs self-update these days, so what is the purpose of having drivers backed up? If you lose something you are going to either use your image or do a new install, yes? I have needed drivers in the past, but cannot remember when a non-updated driver ever caused a problem.
I've been seeing more comments about the SIZE of these free offers and how long it takes to download them - sorry for you slowpokes out there, most of us in the States are DL'ing at screaming speeds; I'm at 20mbps and 90mb is nothing, and I think it is silly to complain about the size of anything FREE. DriverGrabber is excellent and works for me. This is version 2.0; another version (0.5) can be found at PenDriveApps or MajorGeeks.
You'll have to edit manually the .ini file to refine your backup. The default configuration don't ask any question so there's nothing to wonder about.

DriverGrabber + DoubleDriver = output somewhat different backups. With very little work, a perfect solution to help rebuild Windows disks (nlite, vlite, ...).

Thanks to GoldSolution Software + GOTD.
Uninstalled Ver3.65 given by GOTD on 3 Jan 2012.
Installed Ver3.68.

Drivers should not be "updated to the latest" if yours are functioning just fine. What if the new drivers (especially from dubious third parties) do not fit your old software?

Getting all kinds of drivers from Internet is dangerous. Can be with malware.

DriverMax is not a good idea. It seems to REQUIRE you to "share" ALL of the drivers in your PC into a common pool.

On the Driver Magician website:
Clone all drivers to an auto-setup package (.exe), so you can restore drivers without installing Driver Magician.
(You should have read that first.)

This is a great program for maintaining drivers across multiple computers, upgrades, etc. but for backup purposes, shouldn't you backup your entire computer?

DOUBLE DRIVER can only backup and restore your DRIVERS but it's not able to UPDATE any of them....so it cannot definitely be compared to this GAOTD as FREE Alternative!!

Despite negative and misleading comments like the one mentioned above, I found this software pretty GOOD & USEFUL and, for this reason, I highly recommend you downloading and installing it as soon as you can!!

THUMBS UP from me!

That being said, if you prefer relying on FREE solutions, the first thing to do in order to keep your PC in perfect shape (for FREE of course)is actually to update its INTEL drivers:

http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect
http://www.intel.com/support/oems.htm

Most important, besides Intel drivers, are also its VIDEO drivers:

http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/auto_detect.aspx
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Scan.aspx?lang=en-us

Then, for the other remaining DRIVERS, best thing to do is to visit your PC manufacturer website and then download all of the right drivers there, according to the model and OS of your PC!!!

For instance, ACER users can go here to update the drivers of their machine:

http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/drivers

Then to backup & restore all your updated DRIVERS, you can use the excellent freeware "DOUBLE DRIVER" already mentioned above:

http://www.boozet.org/dd.htm

Alternatively or better yet in addition to it, to update all of your drivers with one mouse click, you could also try the following pretty good FREE Third Party Software (all personally tested...don't worry Bubby...LOL!!), kissing your wallet goodbye!!!

As always with Giovanni you can take your pick....

* DRIVERMAX (==> Softpedia Editor Pick)
Can update, backup & restore all your Windows drivers for FREE!!!
However, the FREE edition allows you to update only 2 drivers a day, which is better than nothing of course!!

http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Miscellaneous/DriverMax.shtml

* Ma Config
http://www.my-config.com/

* Slim Drivers (==> Cool Cloud-Based Driver Management)
https://www.slimwareutilities.com/slimdrivers.php

* (Portable) Device Doctor
http://www.devicedoctor.com/

* Unknown Device Identifier 8.0
http://www.zhangduo.com/unknowndeviceidentifier.html

* Driver Identifier
http://www.driveridentifier.com/

* DriverPack Solution (Caution ==> Highly Addictive...LOL!!!)
http://drp.su/

* DriverView (==> Softpedia Editor Pick)

Enjoy!!

Thanks for the giveaway. Still, though, what's the point of downloading this software if we don't have a serial number for Driver Magician to use when we re-install the operating system?

I mean, backing up the drivers is of course extremely important but if we format our drive, we'll have to purchase this giveaway in order to restore the drivers.

Am I missing something here?

View which drivers are installed in your system and you can backup the drivers you choose, save and print the drivers list
Written by Elena Opris on November 18th, 2011

Double Driver is a system tool that you can use to detect, backup and restore the drivers of your computer. It is basically a security measure in case these files become corrupted, infected, or if they are accidentally removed.

This is a portable product, so that means there is no installation kit you can run. Simply extract the archive and run the program. It also means that you can store it on an external device and use it on any computer.

Here are some key features of "Double Driver":

· List, save, and print drivers details
· Backup drivers from current Windows
· Backup drivers from non-live/non-booting Windows
· Backup drivers to structured folders, compressed (zipped) folder, and self-extracting capability
· Restore drivers from previous backup
· Available in GUI and CLI application
· Portable (no installation required)

updated but doesn't know what good it do
as updates are not even on yearly basis...
why would one buy it when he needing it one time in three to four years but backup is helpful to those who formats their windows more than two times yearly(cough cough) but thanks to publishers and gotd for providing it to us .(if they can provide some additional discription on how our current drivers are performing and their known issues online and what will we get with update or rollback it would be nice... )
