After messing with trying to install for a couple of days with negative results I tried the suggestion "use Control V" rather than the context menu.
It worked....... much to my surprise!
YMMV

Shock!
I came back to tell anyone that's still trying to install this app that much to my surprise a previous suggestion to "use Control V" to paste in the User Name and Serial number instead of using the Context Menu actually worked on my machine.
If you haven't dumped the download in frustration you might give it another shot! The dialog box for the serial number, etc., wouldn't take a Copy/Paste with the mouse nor would it accept any typing. When I used Control V and the serial number dropped into place in the box I cursed!
The idea seems idiotic to me but it worked.
YMMV

I concur #258, did a real test on a Vista Home Premium 32bit, image to ext USB, create a boot up recovery CD, use built-in partition restore to factory default (hence, everything is gone, 3 years stuff, boy, the computer run much faster, this take some courage to do if you don't trust it ). Boot up with CD and USB HDD connected, choose simple restore wizard, couple click and off it go, 60GB all restored including the hidden proprietary restore partition. Beautiful.

wish I can test x64 in action.
it's a keeper.

I installed this on three separate machines. All three were running just perfect before hand. One machine I had to bring up in safe mode and remove the software. It's fine now. The second machine is in the process of doing the same. The third machine is running fine with it. The ironic part is that all three machines have the identical hardware from their motherboard to processor to memory to hard drives. The only difference is the cases.

# 164: Brian:

Yod don't need to worry. After making your backup, you just have to burn a Rescue disk (CD/DVD). Just use the in built Paragon Recovery Media Builder.

Afterwards - try to boot from the CD/DVD and browse to find your backup-file.

This is not a comment by me !! I also have a XP SP3-system, but I had no problem installing, registering, running or anything else.

during installation process it says if using firewall ports 3260 and 3261 should be open. What happens if I don't open them? Are they supposed to be kept open even after the installation process? I am using Vista with the factory-shipped integrated Norton Internet Security installed, so that is the firewall. How do I open the ports?

I was unable to install the program and no matter what serial # combinations of caps vs non caps, the letter "o" for a zero I used, the program would not install and always came up with an invalid serial# message.

I tried a second registering a second time and got a different serial # just in case the first one was bogus and it too came up with an "invalid serial number" message.

Although free and apparently fully functional, I'm extremely disappointed at Paragon for running a offer that resulted in being unable to install because of bogus serial #'s. I just see this as unprofessional and operating in bad faith to the public

> 1. Can this be used to backup an image of a laptop disk,
> then restore it to a new, larger disk in the laptop?
> Should it be backed up to an external USB hard disk, or
> would it have to be done to DVDs?
Yes, it's possible, can use either external disk or DVDs, up to you.

> 2. Will it backup and restore Linux partitions?
Yes, but if you had GRUB loader installed, you will need to re-configure it after restore.

> This program has password protection of archives and smewhere
> the word encryption is mentioned. COuld somebody tell me what
> encryption algorithms are used?
Paragon products use a modified GOST-28147-89 encryption algorithm. The password size is limited to 256 symbols.

> I downloaded the software and have tried to register it
> with the supplied user name and serial number. The install
> procedure rejects the serial number regardless of how many
> times I’ve tried to key it in, observing upper and lower
> case as indicated (the cut and paste approach doesn’t
> seem to be accepted).

You were sent product key and serial number, please copy-paste them. The most common problem is that people try to enter their name instead of product key or that extra space character is copied. Just be careful and it will install just fine.

> I’ve never used GOTD before. Are these software programs full versions or trial versions?
This one is not trial, but it has some limitations in comparison with commercial version: it's 32 bit only, and no WinPE CD (though you can create default Recovery CD, so it's fully functional software).
