#18 and #20
It is easy for this giveaway to produce a better sound than the default GM.DLS since this uses it's own Sound Font collection and can use any custom sound font of even higher quality.
Many default sound systems on PC's no longer use hardware wavetable MIDI cards but because processor and chipset performance is so high it's normal to just use MS software DirectMusic compatable wavetable emulator. It sounds OK, certainly better than the old FM synth's of years gone by. But custom or professional soundfonts can easily exceed the quality of the GM.DLS sample set. I do agree that the piano in this giveaways soundfont is better than the piano in the MS supplied GM.DLS set.

This is the first GOTD software I would actually use - I am always looking for a quality MIDI to WAV renderer. Unfortunatelly, I have to second Ron's (#23) comment - since it is just the trial version (yes, after reading and following the readme), it is pretty much worthless for me.

To those who would suggest TiMidity - I am less than satisfied with the quality of its output. The best I have found so far is Audio Compositor. Unfortunatelly, it's author has disappeared from the net and it is not possible to buy the software anymore :-(

Hey, um #72? I really think you shouldnt spew about something your are oblivious to. I converted a few midi files using the software, and I found the SAME results as #14. And yes, I have a good sound card (Creative SOUND BLASTER X-Fi Fatal1ty). But, nice try there buddy. If you were really attempting to make yourself look like a total ***edited***, you succeeded.

good conversion from midi to mp3.
actualy i prefered the sound of the final mp3 to the sound of the original midi files on the sound card of the computer i installed it on...

as for all those who want to convert mp3 to midi or who state that there is no software to do that, the current status is that there is software that does it, but apparently not everyone is aware of what is involved.
when you convert a midi to mp3, you basicly have an inctructions manual on what to play, when you attempt to convert an mp3 to midi, you start out with a sound wave, which as to be analised to determine what instrument resembles the closest to what is being played (and there can be lots of instruments being played at once on an mp3) so this basicly resumes to software with pattern recognition.
the current status of pattern recognition is still not perfect.
we humans are still the best pattern recognisers, so all software that "attempts" to convert mp3 to midi does so with serious limitations.
but, it is funny to see your best mp3 song come out of a midi file.
especialy when the mp3 file is not just instrumental :)

so, for those that want they mp3 in midi format, forget about it, as its currently imperfect technology.
