Maybe a darts player or someone who plays pool, billiards or snooker may benefit from the additional height supplied by shoe or shoe lifts but any sports exactly where mobility is needed would surely be risking too much

Had same problem as comment 42, but did not find out until today - a day too late. Oh well never mind, it was free, I suppose.

Program did confirm as activated yesterday. Probably just erratic with Win7 64bit.

Thanks for an hour's fun anyway.

Comment # 43 - BuBBy- You are correct,I figured it out on my own in time to install on my neighbor's,and my Win7 32 bit....and I think the run as admin might have had something to do with it...activated and installed,All is Well !!! Thanks for the timely reply !!!!!!

@vanierstein - it is likely you were already running the program when you ran activate. The program won't check if it is activated until you restart it again.

Try closing the program (or just restart windows) and all should be ok.

well, waited till all had their say, and since I like Ubericon and those flaming icon screensavers I got here in the psst, I grabbed it and installed ok on win 7 with 64-bit laptop. I reg and activ fine then rt click to run aa admin and all that happened is windows explorer stopped and started - stopped and started over and over till I closed program and uninstalled. sorry - looked fun.

I installed it on Win7 Ultimate 32 bit. It makes the icons blink, but I can't get the program to open by double-clicking, nor right-click, nor from the program menu. Is it supposed to open and have settings?
What a friggen waste of time. Seriously, I don't know why the hell I even bothered with this.

I like the bouncing icon rollover- my eyes ain't what they used to be and the wiggling makes it easier to pick out the icon I'm looking for. I also appreciate being able to go pictureless. I didn't have any problem installing it on XP. Almost as much fun as Gatling.

Thank you for offering this toy again!

I have used it since it was first offered several years ago and have NEVER had any problems with it.

I used this on WinXP and now on Win7 X64.

This is simply a toy. No more, no less. If you are using your PC for work, or serious stuff, you probably won't be interested. However, for a novice or beginner user, it will probably help you understand the computer better. (Or, maybe not!) ;}

Windows Vista Ultimate SP2 64 bit.

Downloaded and installed with no problems.
That's all it did. Tried several different layouts with no success.
Doesn't seem to work very well.

Thanks GAOTD Team

I don't know that I would give $20 for what this app does (maybe $10), but I'm extremely happy getting it for free!! It installed easily and without problems on my Windows XP and does what it says it'll do!! It is running in my task manager at 4,000kb, which my pc has no issue with. Two things I really like are that you can put your icons where ever you want on your desktop and easily lock them into place. Even after a restart, they're still there. Another is that I like to look at my wallpaper, not icons, so I always have to go into the Windows settings and change it it to hide or show icons. With this program you can have the icons hidden until you hover over them with your mouse!! Awesome!!!. Yes, I'm definitely a happy camper!! Maybe there are programs out there which are cheaper, but the way I see it, this was free today!! :-)

I installed it on a desktop which runs Windows 7 x64 and it works fine so far. It's just what it says it is: a toy.

The only thing I don't get is that the website includes this as a feature:
Place Desktop Notes,

Would you like to stick some notes on your desktop?

With Desktop Icon Toy, you could add a note for any icons. It will be displayed when you hover the mouse over the icon.

You could also embed the HTML tags into the note to enrich its appearance.

As far as I can tell, this refers to changing the icon tool tip as opposed to actual note sticking like sticky notes. They should probably just refer to it as the ability to revise and format icon tool tips.

A bit overpriced maybe, but clever little app, will be keeping this one. Maybe would pay $5 to $10 myself...

I bought this program a long while ago; over 3 1/2 years, since I was under XP and at a previous job. Obviously tonnes of YMMV in anything that's a 'toy', c'mon! I can say that it was well worth the money to do the arranging as I needed to be amused, and bounce back to my ordered icons in a spaced out format that conforms to my background whenever I wanted, without hassle.

The only problem I had with this program in the day was that when I changed OS, I could not find my registration email, and there was no other way to reauthorize my paid-for version. The company never responded to any mails I sent.

So i'm glad to get it back for free, and test it out under Win 7x64. Now, to go make a recommendation or two. :)

Correction to my previous post. After you've installed, you have to RIGHT click the launch program shortcut AND "Run as administrator" for it to run without crashing explorer

@ Chi Dog and Luca(and the others) that are asking what else but saving the layout, the clocks are analog clocks and actually function. @ Mahgong(and the others) who say it's just sitting in your sys tray, unless you right click on the icon in the sys tray, it won't do anything. After you RIGHT click and "Run as administrator" to install. You have to RIGHT click the launch program shortcut, THEN you need to RIGHT click the icon in the sys tray and set whatever layout you wish to use.

Not into auto arranging icons into a clock or triangle or all around the edges or any fancy shape.
Not into animated icons.
Not into changing colour of text of icons. White text on blue box background is acceptable.
Not into changing icon size because I have so many that they are already at minimum legible size.
Not into removing text from icons. Text is useful to quickly determine the icon's purpose when one has so many on the desktop.
Not into making all icons suddenly disappear. What on earth for? So you can see your wall paper? Strange.
I have other freewares that can place a note on the desktop if I want to. Rarely need to.

That leaves (for me only - YMMV) the one and only useful function of Desktop Icon Toy:
Save the layout of icons on desktop so that if it ever gets rearranged by a rogue software that was tested, the layout can be recalled.

I have been doing this for years with a very good freeware that only takes 65.5kb for the exe file and 71.5kb for the dll file. That is Kilobyte not Megabyte. The excellent freeware only needs to be invoked when the desktop icon layout needs to be saved and again when it needs to be restored. It does not need to be running all the time.

Oh, for God's sake...all this ranting about what "use" this program is for... It has "TOY" in it's title. That's all it is, people. It's a toy. It's made to tinker with. Why do so many reviewers seem to always want some super, uncomparable utility for FREE every day? Grow up and quick whining! Join the real world. Sometimes you just get what you pay for and how much are you paying for this today? 'Nuf said!

Installed and running on 32-bit Vista with no problems. Having not used any sort of icon utility before aside from RocketDock, this is pretty neat. I like how I can resize my icons and the preset patterns are pretty cool. I only wish there were more. Thanks GAOTD!

I like the ability to hide my icons and also to maintain their position.
But in the end I reverted to my personal favorite Iconoid.

Yes, it's a very unusual app. The novelty has worn off in an hour. it doesn't launch correctly on Windows 64-bit OS.

If you're strictly using the English version, you can delete the following files and folders:

help_de.html
help_es.html
license.txt
license_de.txt

and the language folder

Today's giveaway is the full version, you just need to save the setup.exe file for re-install at any time.

Honestly, I have failed to realize the real purpose of this program. Even for fun lovers, this will not really excite. Developers should add some meat to the program so that icons can be turned attractive. From me today... no. I'm uninstalling...

Think I'll try to survive without this one.

Well, i've used this program for several years and i like. It's a low memory consumer and for me the most important is that it saves the positions of your icons in your desktop. In this way, aways a program or a drive mess up my desktop, i use Desktop Icon to return the original position. The program has many others options to have fun with your icons, but i don't care about that.

The only real thing this program does, is saving desktop layout.

You can do this the Microsoft way easily (NT4 -> Windows 7). Read more here: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/save-and-restore-desktop-icon-layout-in-windows-vista/

For the rest this program lets your desktop icons dance (why?), hides icon texts on your desktop (again, why?) and has a lot of other options which you won't really need.

Only really good of this program is that it auto-detects a resolution change and then will automatically restore desktop layout. That's nice.

All in all: I won't auto-start this program. Why? This software is like candy: and we all know candy leads to problems :P I'll keep my manual restore layout trick ; )

Greetz

Thank you iDeskSoft...but your software is one of the more unusual offerings ever on GOTD. I never imagined so much can be done with desktop icons. But I must concur with Comment #2 that Stardocks Fences is a better way to organize and manage icons. But, again, thank you for the unique experience.

Downloaded and installed. However, it's a little buggy on Win7 Premium x64. You have to run the program itself as admin for it to work correctly, otherwise it won't really do much of anything but give you a debug window. If you do use the Run as admin, it will work. I like the program, I just wish it worked a little better for the more recent versions of Windows and had more layouts. Over all, 7/10

Very useful software, the biggest annoyance is when suddenly all your icons mess up for unknown reason. I used it for several years. But just as I got way too many icons on my desktop I changed it for 'Fences' by Stardock that puts the icons in separate scrollable 'envelops' by group.

Install was quick and easy, but once the program was turned on, it didn't seem to like my computer.
Anytime I would hover over an icon, windows explorer would crash. I'm not sure what the issue is - but this program is not compatible with my computer I suppose.
I'm running a normal Windows 7, Home Premium.
Cheers -
