Just an FYI, fwiw...I had this, LOVE it! Lost it to a hard drive crash, waited for it to come back and got home from out of town a day late too late to download it :o(

Fixed Ribbons are a waste of screen real estate any designer should be ashamed to use. I usually like girly designs, but this one is just bad.

The same basic calendar engine is packaged differently to suit different target customers. Like different car bodies assembled over the same car engine. Reminds me of Ford Fiesta and Mazda 121.

The features are tweaked to suit accordingly. There is a Church calendar, a Dark calendar, a hair stylist calendar, pet sitting service, driving school calendar.

There may not be a depth in the software's ability.
An outdated and obsolete PIM like Sidekick from Starfish, has more functionality than this Dark Calendar.

A search on the Internet reveals a plethora of Freeware PIMs and calendars. Too many to name here. Some of these have surprisingly powerful features.
Some are to be installed in the desktop or notebook. Some are portable. In addition, on-line web based calendars are available Free from Google, Yahoo and Mozilla Firefox. They are complete and powerful.

There is one more potent rival. The mobile phone calendar.

Calendars are already built-in to most mobile phones, especially the smart phones. They usually can synchronise with the PC and the software to do so is given free with the mobile phone purchase.

Apple iPhone definitely has low priced (about $1 or $2) Apps written for calendar function. Some should be Free.

The main selling point of the various themed calendars such as Church calendar, a Dark calendar, a hair stylist calendar, pet sitting service, driving school calendar; lies in the "fun" factor and the slight customisation made towards a particular group/profession of users. This Dark calendar software is a "fun" theme offering. However the novelty may wear thin after a while.

I have to agree with others that the pumpkins stop it being a gothic look, but it is fun for Hallowe'en and it seems to do exactly what it says it will. I think I will use it beyond the holiday period because all my desktop settings are black *lol*

Having said that, a choice of skins would be nice and make it more widely appealing year round. Perhaps black with dripping blood, bats, cobwebs or some spooky gothic arches?

Can't get the email to work. It keeps showing an error message saying it was timed out. That was the only reason I cared about the program.
Also, the buttons to create and delete an event are greyed out. Double clicking on a time doesn't bring up the window to create an event. I have been able to create an event by clicking on the events list.

Ok - I downloaded and played with this program all morning. Here are my thoughts: It's a bit complicated at first, but once you find your way around it's fairly self-explanatory. I could NOT get the email reminder to work ( I tried everything I could think of ) And yes, why would you want Halloween only for a year calendar! I tried downloading the same version of the regular program and putting those files in the Dark Calendar folder (except the .exe file) - It actually worked on one of my computers, but not on another - even though I did the exact same thing ( very odd ) Anyway, will keep the one where I got the halloween skin off - but probably won't use it much since I can't get the email to work.

Many thumbs down are probably people who thumb it down due to it being a "dark calender" and thus "evil", like mr Dan McCormick said, don't thumb down on "feelings" thumb down based on experiance.
Using this since last year when it was offered as well and as calender software it does what it says and does so pretty good too. They might update their programs to be useable with livemail and gmail though. Outlook isn't even supported by M$ anymore

Dark Calendar is a nice calendar/organizer app with a [IMHO more fun than scary] Gothic theme. What it has is a lot of nice features -- what it doesn't have is a lot of connectivity... those with smartphones &/or tablets might wonder why someone would want an isolated app like this that will only run on their PC/laptop. Facebook fans would probably like some sort of Facebook integration. That said it will Import, Export, &/or Sync with Outlook, and you can also export to Excel, Text, HTML, & Xml, so there are ways to get your data back out other than copy/paste. Dark Calendar can also send e-mail reminders -- you set it up just like most e-mail clients. Sending Text messages to cells is also mentioned, but there aren't any separate SMS features -- the help file just has a reminder that you can often send text messages as email, e.g. Verizon uses the cell's phone number *at* vtext.com.

Installation isn't bad, but it's not portable either, with 5 new registry keys plus a new value for ASProtect. The "Dark Calendar" program folder holds 23 files, 4 folders, ~31 MB. The graphics are hard coded into the app's files rather than using an easily replaceable/modable skin. The database is Firebird [firebirdsql.com], & Dark Calendar uses the Microsoft C runtimes you have already installed [v. 8 & 9]. In a very resource limited XP Mode VM it used 67k RAM, & up to 15% CPU at idle, so it may not be something you want running in the background if you've got a lower powered system.

There's nothing wrong with a stand-alone organizer like today's GOTD, but sooner rather than later I think the devs at companies like Binary House are going to have to build in a whole lot more connectivity or find their market(s) just go away. Even [I guess you'd say] more stay-at-home people like myself are finding ourselves using things like the cloud, SMS, social networking etc. more & more in our daily lives. It can creep in gradually but it happens & is happening. Apps that take that stuff into account can offer features that more-or-less isolated apps just can't compete with.

I tried this and left lots of suggestions. Overall I think people should ignore the Dark Calendar theme, which I happen to like and focus on the functionality, which I think is poor, too much functionality is left out and what is there is hard to use. I am uninstalling it unfortunately.

I downloaded this and I do not see the reason for all the thumbs down. It has the event scheduler, plus you have a calender that you can forward for veiwing future months,I will be keeping this one. Thank you gotd and binary.

#7 Mohammed Sharif - I guess there is a reason... but we may not know... okay.

#14 Corek - Could be a false positive. But I assume that you haven´t tested it for us ? So, now we never know !

#20 reghacker - Repackaged isn´t seldom, but sometimes very clever made. Saving space is easy... just don´t install programs that is build in to windows.

There doesn't seem to be any criteria for giving a thumbs up or a thumbs down rating.

For those of you who rant about how many thumbs down a particular software recieves I would suggest that you just skip to the comments section

Some people will rate according to whether they are interested in the software or not; some will download and rate whether the software works as stated or not; and some will rate the given software against all other similar software that is already available

That's three separate groups of people (at least) using the same rating scale.

I would rather read the comments section where I can see what other have said or experienced with the program and then decide if I should download it myself.

Personally, I don't rate software unless I download it, yet there may be many reasons why I won't download a program, I just won't rate it unless I have.

If you have been rating software solely based on what other uses have said - STOP. Rate their comments instead. Only rate what you have downloaded and installed - or if you have used the software in the past share your thoughts with us, but if this is a different version don't rate it without using it because all of your complaints or praises may no longer be relevent.

I suggest more people make comments about the software than rate it because a rating doesn't give any real feedback or suggestions as to why the software got high or low marks.

I am not downloading today's giveaway because I don't want or need it.
I am not rating it either.

But with over 500 combined ratings for a program - there should be more than 20 comments about it.

Make your comments people! It will benefit us all. Thanks.

It's a calendar app. Just because it has, well the product page calls it Gothic but the pumpkins and such make it more Halloween than Gothic.

I think their marketing and art department need to learn the difference between Gothic (they probably never read the Bronte sisters) and Halloween. They are not the same thing.

Yes, it's repackaged.

DarkCalendar is simply put.....Org scheduler 6.6 with a Halloween theme.

Both Orgsedular and Chrysanth Journal use the Firebird SQL client so you can combine them all together.

Therefor you can copy the aliases.conf, orgpro.fdb and HelpDarkCalendar.chm to the C:\Program Files (x86)\Chrysanth\Journal directory saving you 12.5 MB in space savings.

Sometimes I wonder if those who click randomly the THUMB DOWN button have ever tried the software they rated as crap...LOL!

You are ruining this wonderful service guys with your idiotic behaviour....

Anyway....as far as I'm concerned this GAOTD is an excellent schedule management software with lots of cool features to "harness".

For instance, it includes importing contacts from Outlook or exporting them to Outlook, text, HTML, XML, Excel and PDF formats.

And with this tool you can use e-mail or even SMS to send appointments and reminders to your friends and/or colleagues, as well as design and print cool reports, not to mention that your sensitive data are also well protected through a strong encrypted password system.

So this program makes schedule management a breeze and giving it 85% THUMBS DOWN is, in my humble view, something defying human understanding...LOL!

If you don't need a program like this just DON'T RATE IT giving it a THUMBS DOWN!!

For the person asking if it integrates with other software. The program's webpage states it can import from outlook and export as well "The calendar is capable of importing tasks from Outlook and exporting them back, as well as saving the schedule in text, HTML, Excel and PDF formats" from the website link.

Their website http://www.darkcalendar.com/ is impressive for such a trivial product. Now, if you could change the theme, that would be useful. But I can't imagine putting up with this one for more than the 14 day trial period.

Hmmm... This is one of those rare programs that leave you behind with MIXED feelings.

The bad: skin is plain ugly :( I'm not a 13 year old boy...

The good: there are many calendar systems. This calendar system looks good and well-thought out. Most interesting is: send email reminders (you will need your own SMTP server for sending mail).

The unknown: SMS Reminders
From the Help file:
"Using the Dark Calendar and Short Message Service you can send short text messages to mobile phones. You can send messages to a recipients by e-mail: just type e-mail address like XXXXXXXXXXX@sms.operator.com where XXXXXXXXXXX - number you want to call to, а sms.operator.com - the address of a special operator gateway (very often coincides with the operator site). This information is usually available at the operator's site."

---> I don't know, but I don't think this is something many SMS operators will offer...? It smells like free SMS, and I know "they" don't even like the smell of it ; )

Will I install this program on my other computers? Yeah, I guess I will. But ONLY to maybe use it once a year. Which is really sad, for it's mainly due to it's ugly skin.

For freeware alternative with easy SMS integration (depending on country) is Google Calendar. Has everything plus is supported by many 3th party services...

I don't know (nor care) much about "offline" calendar systems. In the end, it's a good program.

No Thumb Up though ;p

Nice, easy to use and clear for my poor old eyes. And why can't you use it all year? When you've gone over to the dark side you can. Soooo I shall use it 24/7/365!! Thanks GAOTD for the varied software you offer!

#3 Evan - Yeah, you´re right about that... wont be the most fancy to use around Christmas, Easter or Valentines Day...

--------- Anyways... ---------

- the offered software is version 1.9 and not version 1.7 as written here at GAOTD...
- I found some bugs, so I turn it over to the experts...

Installed fine on Win7 x64.
It's a calendar program. Does pretty much what it says on the tin. It's not entirely well presented. It looks a little too packed up and choatic in the UI. Too pricey for what it is - so it's a good job it's free today. Thanks GOTD.
