Two great free clock programs:

free World Time - very old, tiny footprint, also timer, stopwatch, and date tracking: http://www.pawprint.net/wt/

Vector Clock
http://www.crossgl.com/vcl_overview.htm
a fully scalable desktop alarm clock that can be placed anywhere on your screen, rotated with total freedom, resized to any scale and set in 3D perspective view without losing any quality. Plus, it doesn't require installation and it's FREE.

Hi all,

Haven't bothered to read all the comments, but have downloaded and installed this software with no problem on XP.

Biggest gripe I have is my OS is Thai based, so when the thing downloaded and set-up, there were many things in Thai, and annoying problem I have with many programs, unless it's a program that is well thought out and offers only an "ENGLISH" version, over-stepping the person's OS who is downloading the software.

Would be nice software if they offered this option. I've scoured through everything on the program and see nothing to change this glitch. My "Month" appears at the top of the screen as gobbledygoop, so I'll be uninstalling this software very, very soon.

I have noticed a trend over the years on this site, weekends seem to bring out the children who don't bother to download and comment negatively simply because it doesn't do what they want ion their tiny small limited worlds.

As I and a few others have said if you bothered or even can read, there are a lot of people engaged in business around the world who would find having this on their desk top very useful and MORE convenient than I-Google, me for one.

I resent your arrogance in suggesting I am of no value and I am not important for using it. AND there are a lot of countries in the world that CAN NOT get I-GOOGLE. News Flash, the world dos not end outside of North America, in fact, this is where it begins.

If you try it and find a problem or have suggestion re the software, comment, but if it just isn't what you want, go back to your porn movie or cartoon and wait for another ripper to be offered.
Or use the "Forum" to have your brief 15 minutes of fame.

To #4 Juila, you are missing a basic point of TIME, CITIES don't exist on their own, they do so in a time zone, so if the small village your friend lives in isn't on the list, then the nearest city in the same time zone will be, there are over 32 cities listed, [I think] which covers most of the globe, I know, I tried it.
Think about it, how many small cities, villages, hamlets and back out of the way little places are there in the world?
Do you really need a list of 1000, plus "Places?"

One more addition to my wish list, a way to adjust the transparency so it runs even more in the background.

Sorry for the rant, I will start with a negative vote of my own, but I am tired of having an orchestrated series of negative comments that obviously haven't even bothered to try it or read the HELP files...

During the past year I've tried 6 or 7 freeware options and I didn't like nor keep any of them. For me this is an easy to use and convenient program that I'll use every day. From a quick glance at the map or from the balloon pop up I can get the information I need at that moment. (Right click on the map for 'Settings'). Also, positioning the cursor over any part of the world map shows the time for that specific area. The world map image is best viewed at the largest setting.

Suggestions:

1) On my older CRT monitor the world map image is too dark so it's difficult to see some of the continent outlines, even with night/day shading turned off. I would assume that there are a percentage of users with the same problem so a lighter or brighter map or a way to adjust the brightness/contrast would make the world map image better in my opinion.

2) Showing Country borders where possible would make the map more interesting and easier to find specific locations with the mouse cursor, also making it somewhat of a geographical learning tool. Adding a zoom feature to that in order to show smaller country borders would add some fascination.

As is, it is a very convenient and useful software. Thank you GAOTD and Crave Worldwide

If you are getting the Bad Gateway error - just try again and again and again. I sometimes have to retry five or six times but finally it always does work. :)

P.S.: Great! I'm getting a Bad Gateway error now when clicking the submit button...

I should mention the freeware I've been using for a long time now, called Earth Clock, that is very similar to today's giveaway (so similar I wonder if today's giveaway is a "spin-off" of this older freeware.

to no. 58, right click the tray icon, resulting menu has a settings option. window size options are there, but limited.

anyhow, tried it, win7 x64, installed fine. do i need it - no. uninstalled it after a few minutes. cannot add my own local city to the list. the 'add city' feature only allows you to add a city to the map from the fixed list. the map graphic shows a very sharply delineated and non-gradient twilight band at the terminator. no way to zoom in on the UK or anywhere else.

For me this software is almost perfect except for one thing.

I talk to people all over the world by IM and I need to know who I can expect to reach at any given time. They are all in different cities and I need to see who is where and what time it is there. I have used FoxClocks (a FireFox add-in) to show a plain list of contacts and their local time, but having a graphical view like this would really be great.

I would really like the ability to customize the display info for each city so I could place a person's name or other info with the city. I also need to be able to add new cities.

I would think other people could use this ability also to track their own information in a global view.

It would be better if this program was "$5.00" instead of "$20.00"... I mean wtf, simple features only and THAT much!? There are tons of other really good software out there... actually, to say the truth, Win Vista and 7 has a similar feature too... I don't see why I should pay that much just to check out what's the time in other countries. :)

Hello all GAOTD regulars.
I would like to give this program a try, but first, could someone who has used it please tell me if it can be resized when being used as a desktop wallpaper?
I have a large 26 inch monitor running at 1920x1200, so obviously this programs world map wallpaper would have to be resized up to 1920x1200 as well.
Thanks in advance. :-)

For peeps with the sidebar, there is a gadget called Digital World Clock. It allows more then one instance, so can be used multiple times, for multiple timezones. Hovering over the clock will give you the date there too. You can name the clock for the city, as long as you know the GMT or you can select from a major city list.

I like having something on the sidebar myself. It allows for a quick and simple glance.

Installed on XP (sp2), click on icon - after a few seconds activity, nothing...

No sign of it anywhere (screen or memory).
Maybe Kaspersky found something in your programme that it doesn't like and blocks it from loading - but no sign of it in K's records.

Installed easily on Win7 64bit. Looks interesting, but I can't find any sort of menu or options. I can't change the size, add to the few cities preset on there, select any of the added features (cloud cover, make desktop background, etc), or any of those useful things! If someone could help me find those options, that would be greatly appreciated.

Installed easily on Win7 64bit. Program looks interesting, but I cannot find any menu or other source of settings or options. When I open the world clock, it shows a set map with only a few cities. I cannot find any way to make it bigger, add more cities, make it my desktop background, view the cloud coverage...any of those special features! If I can't find an options menu or something I will probably have to delete it. Can anyone help? Thanks!

Tested installs on - Win7 32-bit, Win7 64-bit, WinXP
Install issues - none
Memory/CPU Usage - very small

Positives
- It is FREE at GAOTD today!
- It is a world clock in one view.
- Comes with some “extra” features such as a calendar, international dialing codes, and the ability to show global cloud coverage. (Why?)

Negatives
- Some have already been mentioned, but this program isn't very useful.
- No "real" customization other than adding cities and changing window size.

Summary
If you need a World Clock then this might be a choice for you, but there are other alternatives. As a free application today it is a novelity, but it was uninstalled on my machine about 20 minutes after I installed. Just don't have a real need.

Thank you to the developer and GAOTD for the offer.

Easy installation and registration on Vista 32 HP.

Four features Ashraf (post #1) didn't mention that I especially appreciate:

1) Not at all resource intensive.
2) The world map can be used as desktop wallpaper but doesn't need to be.
3) Minimizes to the systray and is visible with just a mouseover, thus taking up next-to-nothing by way of real estate.
4) Automatically includes UTC in addition to whatever cities you choose to add.

As an aside, I can't for a minute understand why Ashraf's post had so many minus points when I first came to the page (it was something like -57) and MrQ's post so many plus points. Contrary to MrQ's opinion, I believe that this would have a very wide target audience that would want an easily accessible clock like this without having to go to another page. Only thing I can think of is that the "time trolls" don't have much else to do today.

Thanks a lot, GOTD and Crave. This might come in very handy for those of us who know people in many countries and time zones.

Setup note: Run Setup.exe and then launch the program. The Successfully Activated window pops up, showing the user name and registration code. Then you have to right-click the globe icon in the system notification area to register. Enter the user name and license key in the boxes.

On both my XP Pro (SP3) and Vista Home Premium (SP2) laptops, when I clicked Register the application froze, and did not seem to register any further clicks or keystrokes. I used Task Manager to terminate the program. But no worries -- when I launched the program again, it was OK and registered.

So don't worry if the program does not respond after you register. Terminate it and launch it again, and it should be OK.

I hope this is helpful.

Here are some screenshots of Utech World Time / AnyTime Earth Clock. Here's the Control Center with the interactive map and searchable locations. The full list, shown, lists each location twice--city first, and country first. It has many more locations than Crave World Clock. Of course, it can be maximized (lower quality JPEG). Here are the Report options and some of the Clock options. The time-zone maps and daylight-saving time specifications are checked for updates on startup, and updated if the user requests it.

I don't use Utech World Time. I prefer EarthDesk because of its high-quality "animated" wallpaper, and I use clocks which support multiple monitors. EarthDesk has a number of options, such as per-display settings. I use Equirectangular projection on one display, and Globe on the other. I find it necessary to leave the "Use Local Daylight Saving Time" option unchecked (clear) for correct sunrise and sunset (terminator) alignment.

Keep getting "Bad Gateway" error so if this come up multiple times, sorry.

As stated it is easy to download, install and sets up automatically using the GAOTD code.
In my case, maybe all, it opened straight to system tray which fooled me, I reinstalled it several times thinking it wasn't working!

Ashraf, well, yeah , there are a few cities missing, but you did say the country list was extensive, it is, but as a test I loaded on a heap of cities, just for fun and found that the map became unreadable as some times were superimposed over others, so more may not be better in this case.
I also tried Qlock some time back but took it out, I think the reason was the free version was very limited and I think, [my memory is hazy] Crave is more user friendly and useful for me.

I suppose it DOES have uses limited to those who need to know the time in other countries, but I think you could probably level that as a criticism of ANY software, for example most of the rippers etc offered here are of no use to me so does that mean they too are only suitable for a limited target audience?

Besides i could add travellers, hotel workers, airline staff and international ticketing professionals as well as people with friends, family or lovers in other parts of the world.
For my part, as an international business based in China it is a useful tool, i usually refer to Google to check the time for some of my clients but as a desk top this is more convenient.

My wish list would include some sort of "handle" to spin the globe to a point I need, same as Google maps can be rotated.
But, it is a keeper, Thanks GAOTD and the Crave Team.

Nice, thanks.
Installed on WinXP-PRO-SP3, works without a hitch as described.

Would be MUCH nicer and MUCH more useful if it could be a replacement to the Windows tray clock and had the features of the free and probably very best Windows Tray clock TclockEX, which is totally configurable, shows time day and date (can be on 2 lines to save space too!) and even has an embeded memory usage line. How about implementing that?
Check out TclockEX and I think you'll be convinced.
BTW, am often getting with this site only: "Bad gateway 502 (or 503)"
Why is that?

This was one I considered when I needed an intl clock on my desktop. At$20 it was expensive and took up a lot of real estate and was not a quick read of "when the time is XX:yy here what time is it in Odessa, or Manila, or Karkov?" for scheduling international meetings and voice conferences.

Though very pretty, today's GAOTD is not practical for business.

I found Qlock (at free or 15$ versions) quite useful with a very low desktop footprint and easy to see. It has a host of cities and the ability to add cities not included, like Farmingdale, Batangus, Omsk. Barnaul etc.

This is a nice international clock. I like knowing what time it is in the city of people I "talk" with in chat rooms and forums. This clock makes that easy at a glance.
The one year calendar is a big plus.
I like keyboard control. Hot keys are a great addition to this program.
Showing cloud cover for weather world wide is an interesting feature.

Here is what would make this ideal for me:
Multiple alarms
Ability to minimize the clock to a small time bar
Make that time bar solid or transparent (optional)
Add selectable chimes on the hour, quarter and half hour
Be able to synchronize the clock to a time standard

Too limited an audience, I think. On the rare occasion I have need, I love the freeware Magic Calendar (http://www.stokepoges.plus.com/calendar.htm) Not only does it have a HUGE database of locations (230 countries and umpteen cities) for their clocks, but it is chock full of Julian and Religious Calendars and naming systems, Country holidays and observances, 23 calculators and converters, ranging from factorial, to Scientific to Statistical, Sunrise/sunset for any of the database locations/ sun and moon phases, On this date, date and time math, On this Date in History, Reminders, and On and On and On....

I think I'll pass today. Better luck next time...

I did not download this.
Fail to see how this could be useful if you have an internet connection.
There are a host of online world clocks that take up no disk space:

http://www.worldtimezone.com/
http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/
http://24timezones.com/
http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/

Now if you dont have an internet connection you could use this download, but how would you download it or even know about it?

Thanks but no thanks GAOTD

I wonder why would people give negative marks to Ashraf's review. Looks like a concerted work by group of people to deliberately give negative points. Ashraf has been the guide for most of the users in this forum including me..whether someones gives him negative or not I dont care..my decisions will always be guided by Ashraf's verdict ..without a second thought..
