For me this soft ware works great! I can capture anything on youtube, including MP3's and videos.I have to go through a site that pulls down the FLV then I convert itwith this program. Easy and fast. Thumbs up !

Thanks!
Incidentally I had a problem that this software solved right away. It is the only converter that made the job of converting a 16:9 video to ipod without stretching it. For some reason even quicktime pro did not convert to ipod correctly, on this particular video file I was fighting with.

It converts them "from one format to another"...as opposed to doing what. Converting them into diamonds and gold perhaps?

Installed and activated fine on WinXP Home SP2.

Lauching the program I can an error message: Acess violation at something something address. The program works though when I dismass that error box. But it's annoying.

I can't get it to convert a .mov that is a 'lower third' with alpha transpanacy even though I do have .mov chosen.

It works pretty well in converting other things though. I was using a program that I thought was supposed to be free-Prism, but after several months Prism decided that it could only output in one format -.wmv unless you pay to 'upgrade', so for now I'll be keeping this converter.

My main annoyance with it is the GUI...it's 'Mystery meat navigation'. The user interface totally sucks with a bunch of funky icons that it's hard to figure out what they are/what they do. This program *really* needs a more standard and user friendly UI.

I will be keeping it around until I find something better, mainly with a better UI and better support for converting Quicktime.

@ Ashraf and other Expert Reviewers ... may be you can Compare the Output Qulaity of the Recommended Converters and write a Review.

The Format Factory that is being recommended it is a Good Converter but osmehow the Output Qulaity is below some other Freewares ... for example WinFF or AviDemux.

There are many great comments on here that go into great detail, so I'm just going to add the last few cents to everyone's two cents and say that the gui (user interface) of this application is superb. It's beautiful in comparison to a lot of the free ones. Not a huge deal in the scheme of things but, it's very clearly setup and for someone who's not into monitoring every detail of their video output, this is completely sufficient and some great eye-candy as well.
It works great, looks great and is simple to use for non-video experts or people who don't mind having their hands held a bit. ;)
Overall one of the better apps I've come across, for what it's worth!!

I guess I'm one that just happens to like programs bu Nuclear Coffee & this ones no different so far. One thing about them is when they come here with an offer, they provide an activation code which works both with give aways installer & their own from the home pabe. Another & this is ikmportant to me, is with other apps by them I/you can reinstall with this key at a later date for whatever reason you might need to. I.E. System crash for an example.
This one seems to work fine & I consider it a nice addition to my Xillisoft converter, (Paid) & my Any Audio Converter, (Free). It's a keeper for me but pay attention during install that you select all the video formats you might need or use. Otherwise you might end up not being able to use your favorite. Mine just happens to be DIVX/AVI.

Thanks Nuclear Coffee & come again, anytime you like!

This really is a terrible piece of software. I won't bother rewriting all the problems I can see with it, that others have detailed already in the comments. The thing that gets me is that this software really is just an interface for great commandline video/audio tools like ffmpeg and other encoders, converters for AC3 to mp3 etc etc which are ALL freware and are not charged for.
As there are so many of these great free tools there have alos built up a few interface softwares like this one, that are also totally FREE and, due to the amount of freeware commandline tools they use, they can convert between just about every video and audio format around.
The point being that the free tools being used in this software and the same free tools that are being used in other software. The difference is that the author of this one is charging (too much!) for his and the others are free.
SUPER has been mentioned a dozen times already. For good reason. I highly reccommend it to anyone reading this!
There are many others too. They have great, easy to follow interface, simple conversion process and are in my humble opinion, worth ten of this program with it's bugs and crashes!!!
It doesn't even come close to the others. At least they are stable!

No Good - Don't know whether it is the program or me. I have an flv file that I want to play on Windows media Player. I've tried both WMV and Zune conversion with the Microsoft ADPCM audio. It converts OK; when I try to play it, I get a message from within WMP that it needs an unavailable audio CODEC. What is wrong?

I already use Ultra Video Converter but won't hurt to have another.
The ease of installation was very nice and the layout looks basic easy to use and can convert many formats as well. Good for people who are not interested in downloading codecs simply converts to the format that the player can play but then most modern players have many codecs already installed with the player. I think that its worth the value of 20.00 dollars having said this its always good to have a video converter or two laying around on the desktop just if you prefer watching your movies/videos on Windows Media Player with no codecs installed. In this case converting a Divx video to a WMV video would be a good scenerio. I give ConvertVid a Thumbs Up!!!

From the product website screenshots it looks like this only converts up to WMV v8. Can anyone confirm this? My Creative Zen needs v9. I love the company's VideoGet (which I got from Giveawayoftheday a while back), except for this flaw. Many times I download with VideoGet and convert with AnyVideoConverter. The CPU usage is insane on the latter, so a different program would be nice.

Thank you, moderators for removing the inflammatory sentences in post #2, but leaving the rest of the post. I don't want that gentleman to go away and didn't want to seem whiny about it, but this will continue to be a good forum only if we can try and treat each other with some respect. Thanks again.

Herns, there's medication for that.

Rylla, you probably need to give us more details. What's happening? Nothing, or are you getting an error message?

Ben, I agree people shouldn't just come here to post their favorite freewares without comparing. But, if they have compared, then that's good input for the developers. They'll know what the popular competition is doing and what new features they might need to offer to stay competitive. And just because it's free today - if another software is free every day and is as good or better - isn't that a better option. That way, you don't have to worry about ever losing it. And, I promise, GOTD won't go under if somebody criticizes a piece of software. But, if people haven't done a comparison, it's unfair and disrespectful to come here just to post their favorite software. There's plenty of other forums for that.

#99: In defense of ConvertVid, many video formats (like DVDs) allow anamorphic video, which ultra simplified, is video intended to be stretched rather than used at the existing frame size. Very often it's not easily possible for a program to tell if a video is anamorphic or not, and often the person doing the conversion has a reason for not doing the stretching exactly as it should be. There are also common frame size restrictions for different hardware &/or codecs. That ConvertVid sticks to those common sizes, leaving it up to the user to handle any cropping/resizing elsewhere, is very cool by me.

this is really not the best program out there. I have not downloaded it but I already know of a better program without even having to try this one. It is called Super. It can convert almost any media into any media and it is free, no tricks, no signups, no memberships. just plain free. I have been using for the past 3 years and have never had complaints.

#40: You can always find a good link for Super at videohelp.com

* * *
#44: many of the converters offered on GOTD have featured priority settings that can help, or you can set it manually. At any rate, a CPU usage approaching 100% while encoding with a single core CPU is normally what you look for. The best *cure* of course is dual, triple, or quad cores if you have the $... otherwise reduce priority & do your thing -- cpu use for encoding should drop by whatever amount needed.

* * *
#51: When you reduce quality enough to fit in the average flv file, it's going to look poor, no matter what you do after that -- data lost is data lost. Otherwise, go to videohelp.com for guides, forums etc. if you want to learn how to create a DVD from whatever.

* * *

#57: There are a few free video editors, & a commercial skipping program or three. Depending on what you choose to use, you might still like/need something like ConvertVid to get your output in the desired format however -- it's not always a one step process.

* * *
#84: You're probably looking for something like AviSynth (AviSynth.org). It lets you open whatever in almost any program, especially when paired with VFAPI -- with VFAPI don't see why it wouldn't work with ConvertVid.

* * *
#85: No *if*... the ffmpeg.exe included is sort of a giveaway that ConvertVid uses it. ;-)

* * *
#87: Super is clean if gotten from a good source like the original site or videohelp.com

* * *

#91: If you're after converting 5.1 to stereo, you *might* want to look up the old methods of using Graphedit & PowerDVD to re-blend & balance channels. Some players might also handle 5.1.

* * *

#95: FWIW, if I'm looking for a certain type of program, & referred by Google etc. to a site like GOTD, then I certainly appreciate any helpful hints about alternative apps that some people feel does a better job -- in that situation I am after completing a certain task after all.

If I'm at GOTD & what they have to offer that day is relative garbage, I appreciate hearing that also. Sometimes the best way to rate something though is in comparison to something else... in those cases referrals to alternatives are nice too.

Correction to my last post. The download-link for SUPER provided by me will not work stand alone. They force you to go through three different screens before you come to the download link (and they check this procedure).

Fast arrival and skip all the blurp:
go to "http://www.erightsoft.net/SUPER.html" (page 1)
textsearch for "start downloading" and click. (open page 2)
textsearch for "download and use" and click. (open page 3)
textsearch for "setup file" and click. (download SUPERsetup)

The fact that it is fixable doesn't make up for bad design. There is *no* reason a format converter should ever change an aspect ratio unless you specifically ask for it in order to correct a previous bad format. I really despair nowadays when you see stretched TV pictures everywhere you go and no-one seems to think there's anything wrong with it. (Note to European readers whose TV's adjust automatically to 16x9 - this is a peculiarly North American problem :-( Especially in bars and other such public places. One TV station - TNT - even *broadcasts* in anamorphic stretched mode, which is impossible to undo on your TV because it's not a linear stretch.)

3-4-09W,
I must say, I relate to Anton,#20, & the first thing I noted was the ease of use for the novice w/drag&drop and featuring alternate media players Real,Media, QT; also,for me,the "i" toolbar visible storage of the registration no. is a plus: now I don't have to create a special folder & go thru MS Word for "scrap," which thing I detest (gotta' figure out why all of a sudden I can't cut&paste directly from the web or anything else it seems to a blank folder without having to go thru MSW blue!). The reg.# is case sensitive, in case (ha!ha!) you not so funny find yourself unable to mouse...what's wrong with this mouse of mine? My thanks to #16...didn't know the button was there...below the event horizon on my lap. Well, we've gone from GAOTD to GOAD to GAOD in just 20...that's GO to GA...Klingnon delicacy; move it over just a squinge and we'll be calling you GOD and thanking you for this fine s/w and the marketing concept which is good. thank you, G(A)O(T)D for the stuff...enjoy this group of revelers!

The tool offered here is great, but SUPER is simply the very best, many more options and control.

ConvertVid: easy and good, but also basic in control.

SUPER: steep learning curve and very good, lots of options and control, not very intuitive.

Stories about virusses in SUPER are urban legends.
Yes, there home site-is spitting ugly, not their tool.
SUPER Download-link is a bit hard to find, but not for you:

It's disappointing that ConvertVid doesn't offer audio sample rate of 48, which many (most?) cards use natively (internally), & is the common rate for DVDs... What that means is that since there's no direct conversion from 48 to 44.1, 22 etc, if you've got audio at 48, it *has* to be resampled, which introduces errors (good audio editing software reduces these errors by dithering). I was also surprised to see wma audio absent with wmv. Otherwise as noted early on in the comments it's a ffmpeg front end.

What I don't get is why people list free software alternatives that do the same thing as the program being offered.I mean. Hello. It is free for today. So get it. It doesn't matter if it is usually free or not. Today it is 100% free. So get it.

Works on
Vista x32 and x64
XP x32 and x64
XP IA64

Works. For the most part. Minor issues on x64 and IA64 but that's common for FF and DS frontends.
And with that said; as noted, this is a GUI frontend, not a self contained program
This looks like a flashy rewrite of handbrake with pretty icon pictures of devices!

With these frontends I'd suggest staying with other free programs:
For converting to mobile devices: Handbrake has all the same output presets as this, and looks to me as if it was the starting point for this program.
http://handbrake.fr/

For standard computer playback video and DivX/XviD disc conversions Automen takes up no space, very little resources, as much or as little ram as you like, etc:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=127298
Newest versions at the end of the thread

For a self-contained program that uses it's own codecs, own resources, own everything I'd still suggest Ultra Video Converter. It's a pay program, but for $30 it's the fastest I've come across yet, even surpassing Nero Recode in speed.

INCREDIBLE!!! On this last weekend, I and my wife were viewing some Mozart and Beethoven DVD concerts (VOB format) we have on video and she said that it would be nice to have them on CD so she could hear them on the car's stereo while she was driving. On the last couple of days, literally, I was looking for a freeware that would do it! LOTS of them do it for the first 3 or 5 minutes of the music or for 5 convertions or something like that. Although I have FFactory and Super, I did not check if they could do it ( I think I just "assumed" they wouldn't). Now comes this soft!!
It just did it in minutes, with a higher quality that the ones I've tested and removed!
Ten thumbs up GAOD!!! This is one of your gems!!!!
thanks

Slick program. I converted some of my Divx movies no problem.

Thanks again GAOTD... but my favorite is still Format Factory.

I have always noticed how SUPER gets thrown in every time a video converter shows up. Yes SUPER is good, I have had in installed on my last 5 machines, inlcluding for a while this one. From Windows ME, Win2000, XP, and now Vista. Everytime I used SUPER, when I was done converting, I would have to reboot my computer to get all my resources back. If I didn't my computer would not act right until I did reboot.

Application installs fine on XP SP3. I like them providing the serial number, but don't know yet if we can successfully reinstall it after the GOTD ends. Unregistered product permits 20 conversions. The serial number provided removes that restriction. This application does not appear to take HD content into account. Doesn't appear to support MPEG-TS (transport stream), which is what I am trying to convert videos to. Frame size option appears to be limited to 720x576. :( Works reasonably well within its limitations... I'd give this a 4 outta 5.

First of all, if this is really based on the ffmpeg converter,
you're better off downloading Winff or several other programs.
Links can be found her on Videohelp.com. All these programs are updated regularly, with excellent forums for discussion of bugs, usage, etc.

Some others have mentioned Super. Wasn't there a problem with this program in that

1) They have a quirky website which won't allow you to download it until you disable most of your firewall security?
2) Others have said it loads files in the System 32 subdirectory which aren't deleted when uninstalled. Subsequent video forum posts have stated the software author has taken care of it in later revisions. Anyone?

Another excellent program which is constantly being updated and is open source is Mediacoder. Someone provided a Softpeida link. Here's the author's site:

Like Super, this program will convert anything (and even comes in a lighter audio edition). An advantage it has is that it's forums are easier to read and the author frequently contributes to it.
