I forgot that I had already tried this program before. I find the settings to be kind of hokey. I mean, how do you set it to output xvid format? It doesn't actually say xvid anywhere in the advanced settings. Perhaps an xvid is actually an MPEG1 or MPEG2 or something? If so, how would I know if it doesn't say that anywhere? Also, audio doesn't allow you to choose the MP3 codec. It just says MP3.
I like my movies to be xvid with lame MP3 audio, and it doesn't appear that it's possible to set it to do that, unless I'm missing something?

Uninstalling, again.

One nice Aspect of this program otehers seem to have missed is that it ALSO converts various music formats to one another. So, it does double duty as both Video Converter and Audio Converter.
Thanks Nuclear Coffee!
BTW, installed & runs fine on Win 7 32.

I wanted to use this to convert a .wmv file I create with Windows Movie Maker so I could burn it to a DVD. But when I selected the output option "DVD" it only created a .mpg file, not the .vob and associated files needed for a DVD to play on a stand alone DVD player. I tried it anyway on two DVD players and it did not work.

I also tried to do the same with "Wondershare Video to DVD" program offered by GATD a few weeks ago. Even though I specified that I wanted it to create a DVD and not an .iso file it only created an .iso file and then stopped, telling me "congratulations burning is complete". My AVS DVD Burner program would not load files from the created .iso file so this attempt also failed.

Then I loaded the freeware program from http//dvdflick.net which was recommended by Kim Komando's newsletter. This program worked perfectly, and includes a DVD burner so did the whole job translating from .wmv to burned DVD. So the freeware program wins the prize.

FWIW, there are a few comments on unplayable H264 video output from ConvertVid... I didn't have a problem using VLC, though I don't doubt others did. I'd *guess* that in at least some of those cases ConvertVid was having trouble reading & decoding the input video. If it doesn't work for you, & you like the app, if that is in fact the problem it should be fixable by tweaking the priority of or installing added Direct Show filters for whatever type of video you're using for input.

ConvertVid is a decent enough front end for ffmpeg, that both works & is fairly fast. However there are significant cons...

While it works fine in 7 64, it's still 32 bit. While you can somewhat customize the output templates, it's multiple choice rather than the freedom of fill in the blank. For formats like H264/AVC, you can't set average & maximum VBR bit rate -- I chose 768, & Media Info reports the result as 816 CBR. CPU usage on a quad is ~25% or 1 core. There's nothing in the way of aspect ratio handling/conversion -- 16:9 mpg2 = 4:3 output. While it works very well with the VOB files on/from a DVD, you can't select the audio track, &/or it may not work with multi-channel [it selected the 1st stereo track]. [Often you can use DVD Shrink to copy a DVD with your choice of language track to a single VOB on your hard drive, & feed that to one of these converters -- without aspect controls & maybe no 5.1 audio support, ConvertVid would not replace a Ripper-Converter.]

#34, mspeter- I downloaded and started to use iSpring when GOTD last offered it -- I used it every day to post by lesson powerpoints for my absent students. When my hard drive crashed last month, I downloaded and started to use the free version. http://www.ispringfree.com/
I much prefer the GOTD version and will download it again when offered again.

I had an older version from a prior give away, and its what I use most of the time. It's fast and does the job!

The old version gave me an error message on startup (but didn't affect anything), and it seems to be fixed in this version.

Just some advice - If you have an older version un-install it before installing this one. I didn't at first and it caused this version to be painfully laggy.

Once I un-installed and then re-installed with this it's running perfect now. - WinXP Home SP2.
