#54: You are wrong.

"Not for commercial use" means "not for use by you to make money", as in your business. Pretty much all software that is available only for purchase (like GOTD products on days other then their giveaway day) is "not for re-sale". Generally speaking, a software developer would be willing to give away his program only for home use; if you are going to make money with his program, he should, too. Clearly, in this case, given the nature of the program (i.e., business-project management), a non-commercial-use-only license would not give most people interested in the program much value.

Wow! Thanks for this title! I have been working on a project that is branching into several related projects. I have been assigned the coordinator for all of them, so this is going to come in really handy. I am fairly new to this arena and am not familiar with other PM tools so I cannot compare them. I have been playing with this for only a few minutes and I already see the value of it. I will venture to rate it a 7. Thanks to CS Odessa and GAOTD!

Mine asked for a serial number also when I first launched it. I was flustered. I have over 90 GAOTD programs and I read the readme file so I know I activated it correctly. After I opened it later on in the day the second time, it did open without asking for a serial number so I will assume it's going to work when I have time to check it out.

Get on it, folks!

This is seriously useful software from a good company. I do a lot of not-for-profit work (some deliberately), and this will help a lot.

Works fine in Vista, by the way. It took me a couple of hours today to discover that it's significantly superior to MS Project.

This is a cool software, it's similar to TurboProject and Microsoft Project, but it is easier to use and it has a cleaner interface. However, for smaller projects I prefer Goal Enforcer http://www.goalenforcer.com

I had trouble downloading this with Firefox. No trouble after I switched to my IE view. It could be one of my plugins, but for those having trouble downloading and running Firefox, give it a try with IE.
Installation and activation went smoothly.
I easily added a task and assigned a resource to it. I put in the resources salary and percentage of time spent on the task and the total cost automatically updated with the completion status.
I did not see any way to do blue prints or plans that some previous commenters said was there. That was what the previous giveaway could do. This software is similar to MS Project which I don't have. I was also able to add subtasks easily. I didn't download mindmaps so I couldn't test the export to mindmaps.
I don't think we want what the average Joe wants since the average Joe doesn't have more than a high school education.
Thanks for the software.

#65(loserpatrol)-Your long-winded rant is totally uncalled for. If you don't like the software being offered, DON'T DOWNLOAD IT! Who's the loser now?
#79(Merril)-You claim to know what this comments page is for, then proceed to use it to insult our intelligence us with a fishy rags-to-riches story. Do not take us for fools.
As for today's giveaway, there are freeware programs out there that do what this claims to do and much more, and they're cleared for commercial use.

Have no use for this giveaway but thanks for just offering something different. Maybe down the road there can be a program offered that will be able to burn XBOX 360 games to disk? That would be a very useful offer that a lot of people could use and appreciate. Your site is great and keep the offers rolling!

Hello,

As a one man software development company this program can be VERY useful, specially since we are allow to use it for commercial purposes. I installed it, activated it and ran it with no problems.

I always try to check if the program is a registered version and not a trial. I tried to look in the 'About ...' part of the Help menu but no information there. I clicked on the 'Online Registration' and it opened a web page which McAfee site advisor didn't like at all, so I closed it without further inquires.

I will rely on the fact that the program runs fine and does not indicate that it is a trial version and trust that it is indeed a registered program because I am not about to enter personal information into a page that opens a red McAfee site advisor pop-up.

The program is very simple and intuitive to use which is a welcome feature since I don't have the time to learn how to use the more complicated PM's. There seems to be no way to link different projects together which is a shame because some of the software I write is connected and I could use some cross management between them.

There is also strange behavior with respect to toolbar positioning. I recommend not to expect that you can design your own positioning and just go with the default.

The rest is golden. I have never used a PM that is so easy to use. In fact, I had given up on PM's altogether and I have been using a lot of programs, among them Notables, Access, Xemacs, and others, which did not work together, but each did a part in managing my projects.

It took me less than an hour to recreate an existing project using Project 3! Thank you GAOTD and Odessa for this great offering. I do recommend Odessa to look into why McAfee site advisor doesn't like your web pages. It could turn a lot of potential customers away.

-Mario

I spent a few minutes working through the sample projects. This program is very intuitive to use. I see myself using this program in the near future. Only con to me is the color scheme seems rather bland. I see blue and gray with a sparkle of white but thats it. I really think adding some more color to the program would help.

Once again it would seem people are getting confused over this comments page; it is not for individuals to say whether they can make personal use of a utility but for people to comment on how good the actual software is in relation to what it purports to do.

ConceptDraw programs are genuinely fabulous and this one is no different, with its ease of use and speed of tasks.

I absolutely agree with #69 - if you do not have a use for these programs right now then MAKE a use for them, 2 years ago I would not have had a use for many of the programs offered here but now I do through starting up my own internet based businesses from scratch with no capital whatsoever. I began by selling on eBay and gradually built up profits to buy websites and other such ventures. Do indeed think outside the box, for example for this program that is now offered for commercial use, why not set up your own service offering Project Management to businesses over the internet? Just an example but there is always a use for everything and there is no such thing as a useless utility - it is only useless if you make it as such.

@54 - Your definition of commercial usage is a bit askew.

For most interpretations, commercial usage would be considered any use in the activity of commerce. It doesn't mean that you are selling the product itself, which is included in the restriction, but are using the product in support of any activity that would be considered commercial, anything for which you are paid, whether self-employed or paid by an employer.

So, if you are using a "free" screenshot utility to capture screenshots that you then place in a document that is used as reference by a technical support person to support a salesperson selling items to customers, you are likely to be violating the commercial clause, if it has one.

Whatever you save on licensing with your interpretation might be wisely set aside for legal fees, just in case. ;-)

To #14: I'm running under W2k, installed the GAOTD download and it seems to run fine. Haven't tried to plan a project yet, so maybe it crashes if you try to do something complicated. So far, it's okay, though.
For what reason W2k wasn't mentioned as OS?

i've been reading everyone and so far very few think you can use it around the house. Really??
how about chore lists for the family? you could use a rotating schedule with avg time to finish, etc.
how about test dates/essays/sports events/etc your kids have in school? if they have a big project due, they can see when certain things need to be done.
how about a plan for do it yourselfers? blue print, supplies, labor (man hours), cost analysis...
how about at home businesses???
good lord, there are endless possibilities...
wedding planner...birthday/anniversary parties/vacation timetables...private school/college tuition payments due...
just give it a little thought...even if you don't need it now, the program is too expensive (wtg, btw!!!) to let go by without downloading for free.

Why all the positive comments? This software is useful to a very limited number of users, and lacks features to be really worthwhile to those who might need it.
Expensive for the individual user (remember, NO upgrades and NO support, standard for GOTD offerings), and clunky for a larger group to work inside. There really should be a more feature-rich version.

Excellent software - Thanks so much GAOTD!

For all of you that say it's no use are thinking quite small. Expand your mind - make something useful and sell it online. You have been given everything for free, from this site, that you will need to run your very own successful Internet Business. I can think of at least 10 things just off the top of my head that could be easily made into small fortunes just by the products you've been given this week!

Start thinking out-of-the-box or at least be grateful. Seems like so many people sit at their computers waiting for someone to give them something and then cry about it. Get a life and start using your time and your mind for bigger and better things! That might even make you less miserable and your comments more enjoyable for the rest of the appreciative group to read!

Before I download this one, I was wondering if someone might be able to tell me exactly what the major benefit of this software is over MS Project. Personally, I have MS Project Professional 2003 on my PC, and don't want to just overload my PC with programs, but if this program is better, I might switch - but would not want to switch if there really is no major benefit.

Thanks GAoTD for your site, and hopefully we can continue looking for great software to come - more utilities/prgms to help the everyday person.

PLEASE, PLEASE offer the regular ConceptDraw as a download again. It's used by librarians and information scientists as an alternative to Visio to diagram relationships, and was mentioned on a job description I applied to after the Giveaway was over! I didn't realize how valuable of a tool it was until after the promotion. If I like it, I will recommend it to colleagues.

This is a fantastic program for smart, successful business people. Of course, there will be losers who don't try it and post comments to the contrary, but that's why the world ignores such losers.

If you are a loser and this doesn't meet your needs, wait around and maybe they will offer you that hangman game you've always wanted. Of course, when they do offer that program you've always wanted, others will be sure to post that "it sucks" because it is not something *we* have been waiting for.

There sure are a lot of morons who post knee-jerk comments in an area devoted to actual use and feedback from those who've actually tried a given program. If you are one of these types of people, perhaps you can do the world a favor and find another planet to live on. And on the way out, let us know how you got out of your cage so we can fix that loophole in the future.

Thank you once again, GOTD, for what appears to be very valuable and useful software.

Warning to my fellow downloaders: McAfee SiteAdvisor reports that giving your email address to the conceptdraw.com site results in receiving spam emails, some of which contained viruses (though the site's downloads were clean). Therefore, I recommend that you not submit your email at the site (you don't need to when registering today's giveaway software).

I also recommend that everyone install and use McAfee SiteAdvisor. If you don't know what it is, read my description in post #10 (January 25) of my utilities blog at http://jonathanstoolbar.blogspot.com.

Original download link didn't work for me, it locked up my browser when I clicked the download button at the wikifortio site (luckily I have the Wirekeys program given away recently and was able to end the process), mirror link worked up to 8.28 mb then quit working, waited a few hours and it finally worked again. Activated ok, runs without a problem, not for the average user but a great software program for me, allowing commercial usage now makes it useful instead of useless (Before I couldn't legally share any info from it, now I can :)) and I got a $200 software program for free, this site rocks!
I would like to see the WebWave software as a giveaway soon, that would be excellent and useful to more people than this program.
(since it includes Macintosh support I think it's unlikely)
I'm going check out the trial version anyhow.

#36 These comments are moderated before they are posted (for blatant vulgarity/porno links/unsavory things I suspect) and not just anyone could pose as a member of the GAOTD Project team, That IS Slava.
You will see your message as soon as it's posted, but at the bottom you will see a remark that says "your comment is awaiting moderation".
It's highly unlikely the GAOTD team would post information from a "poser" after moderating the comments.

Thanks for the info Slave and to CS Odessa and the GAOTD Project Team for another great program!

I have a few reservations on this one. Personally, I think someone can make a career fiddling with their plan in MS Project, so a more elemental approach sounds appealing. One reservation is in using a tool that is non-standardized. The other is that the v3.4 release (of which this give-away is v3?) has better collaboration with MS Project.

For me, if this was v3.4 with the better collaboration, I'd download it for use.

I have to retract the beta comment above. In trying to figure out why moving the dialogs was so problematic, the pfogram froze up and nothing would work until I used task manager to close it.

The issue with moving the dialoges is a major flaw (with emphasis on major). The dialog tools are a moajor component and they crash the program.

A nice bare-bones project planner. This is the latest version, and not beta in any way.

From a security viewpoint, it does not do any of the annoying things we have had to deal with on GOTD before, such as unwanted ad links or embeded advertisements. It does not phone home, unless one asks for updates, does not send any data other than the appropriate link to the update page.

Nice features for those of us in multiple monitor environments. Project 3 had no problems with me stretching the main window over two monitors and putting the different dialogues and toolsets in other monitors. However, it did not save settings within the stretched window. For instance, I had moved the divider seperating the text liting side from the chart view, and on re-entry it was in a different place. Not a major flaw, but annoying enough.

Changing the dialogs is not intuitive. One can not simply uncheck a dialog from the main menu to close it. That has to be done within the dialog itself. The click and drag to change dialog setup was nice. I also like that one can make them into self-hiding tools.

A more serious flaw occurred when I moved any of the dialog tools to the top or bottom of the workspace screen. When the project was first opened, there were two dialog windows on the right side of the screen, one above the other with the others available as tabs.

When moved either one off the side and placed on the top or bottom they do not take up discrete positions as tool objects, but instead stretch to dominate the workspace, and each demands to use the entire length of the workspace. I could not get them to share the top or bottom like they do on the side (and that was annoyingly tedious to achieve).

When moved back to float they stay huge, covering both monitors of the main program. Equally serious, it changed all the other custom screen object positions I had made. It was unbelieveably tedious to get any of the dialogs to a position of one over the other.

Decent enough import/export to XML or Mindmap outline (another of ConceptDraw's packages).

No relational connections, so one project can't refer to another. One can't click to open task sheets, instead there is a general data entry that is already open. No drag and drop or any of the things most computer users are used to having available.

No way to enter author information or track changes in shared environment.

There is a MAC version.

"ConceptDraw Project 3 is designed to facilitate the scheduling of multiple simultaneous projects in small and mid-size organizations. ConceptDraw Project 3 is applicable for consultants, project managers, software and IT companies, marketing and PR agencies, as well as many other business or educational institutions where there is a need to plan and track complex and multiple projects."

I think that says it all!.. If you are not associated with a business doing extreme projects then you will have no real use for this program. Unless of course you have alot of free space on your computer that you can't find anything better to fill it with!! By the way, if there is anyone who has not really explored the GAOTD site, check out this section, you might find something useful! http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/freeware/
