LMAO. If there is indeed better, always-free software out there, why would you not want people to inform you of that? Don't complain, just click the link and download the superior program. And then THANK them for taking the time to make your life a little bit better, don't get angry with them. If GOTD wanted to prevent negative comments, they'd remove the thumbs down button.

Listen, if there is comment after comment saying, this product is not as good as X free alternative out there, I have news for you: THERE IS PROBABLY A BETTER PRODUCT OUT THERE. So thank the poster for preventing you from wasting your time determining that for yourself, and go download the other, better product

Good point, Harpo (#122), though I didn't mean to imply trickery on GAOTD's part, just that their system might be on the blink.

Installed & runs great on xp sp3. Works very well, & fast & easy. Magnifies what curser is over automatically, so you can find tiny pixels of color even. Great program! Thanks! :)

as a GFX person - this saves me having to open photo shop, paste screnie and continue - quick easy and efficient. So to all the complainers, this software might not be useful TO YOU but it is to some of us, and PickTool - HAS YET top give me ease of use like this. I have testd a few "colour pickers" - and this has got to be the best yet

I checked out this program. If I were to pay for it, I'd expect more color scheme combinations. I've taken a class that covered color schemes. There are some not found here. Namely: Monochromatic, Analogous, Split-complementary and Triadic. You can do Monochromatic to a very small degree. For the others, you're on your own.

What may work better as far as saturation and brightness is concerned is adding sliders, one for saturation, one for brightness (and technically, you'd want one for hue). So, you could use "drag" to select the color and then use the sliders to make the color darker/brighter or less/more saturated.

The help could have explained the "drag" option better. Basically, you have to select drag from the capture > mode and left-click the magnifying glass and then drag from there to the area.

Many of the formats are minor differences (photoshop is similar to HTML, Delphi, C++, Visual Basic, hexadecimal ... just change # for $ or add semicolons etc). So I'm not impressed of multiple variants of the same "flavor" so to speak. The ones I've seen typically used are HTML, RGB, CMY, CMYK, and occasionally HSI/HSB (aka HSL/HSV) which this program covers.

Putting the HTML/HEX values next to the colors is a bit redundant if they're going to be in the box below and are useless if you're not using html/hex values. A better use of that space would be to keep the current color on the left and on the right have 3 boxes by 3 boxes of different colors (imagine a tic tac toe board where each area has a different color). This is how it'd work: You'd select "More saturation" from the "Additional" drop down and each of the 9 colors would be a bit more saturated for the original color. One might be 110%, one might be 125% and so on. Clicking on one of the 9 "new" colors would display the values for that color. The 3x3 grid would be useful for Monocromatic and other color schemes where there could be various colors that fall in that category. I could draft a design for this, but they'd have to pay me for it. ;)

Overall, the program is okay. Sometimes you want finer shades of differences instead of 1.5x and 2x brighter/darker or 1.5x and 2x less/more darker. You can't do that with this program. Also, there's no support for the various other colors schemes I mentioned.

I'd expect fixed values like these for a free program. For a program I'd pay for, I'd want sliders so I can vary these values by smaller increments (ex 10-20% brighter). Also, if I'm paying for it, I'd expect support for the other color schemes.

So, with all that in mind, I'd give it a 6/10.

Regarding your observation: When the comments are coming fast and furious like they seem to today (due to lots of activity) then the votes seem to randomly jump when you click on the "yes" or "no".

From my own experience my vote may cause the counters to go one way or the other by more than (or opposite to) my one vote, or even remain unchanged, because other people have been voting while I've been reading all the comments.

The next time you want to see your vote sway the count in the direction you want and expect, first try reloading the page, then quickly find the comment you want to vote on, note the vote count, and vote before someone else might. You'll likely see it behave "properly".

I really don't think the GAOTD folks or their website are doing anything tricky.

I appreciate GAOTH very much and check it daily. I feel the commenting today was not intended to stop negative 'feedback' on a product, because all feedback is useful; But to encourage REAL feedback that gives an opinion about the product, neg or positive.

But those who complain of GaOTH not showing things 'they' like, does get old. If the product doesn't suit me one day, I'll check again tomorrow. And, if I have to ask what it's used for, I wouldn't download it just because it's free.

I especially want to know of a problem issue I may come across. I like the links to other freeware and use many of those. I didn't know GAOTH had its own free list of products, so I learn from reading the comments too.

Thanks, GAOTH!

It is sad.

I look every day for the giveaway; sometimes, I don't know what the software is or if it is something that I can use. Those are the times that I rely on people's comments in the forum. But, lately, many of the comments aren't worth reading and are just trashing something.

There are lots of people like me who rely on others and other forums to educate themselves on software and computers.

If you can't say something nice or even constructive criticism; then just keep your fingers still.

I appreciate any useful comment which might help me to decide whether I should try a certain program out or not. But why are you so insulting and treat people as liars, just because they give their opinion? I would love more tolerance aroud here and any good advice. I love this place, even if I do not need most of the programs, and I especially choose the US site, although there are comments in my native language, too.

Negative opinion about a program fine. Whining that you don't need it so it's bad, complaining that you think the software is useless so blah blah is just stupid. And of course don't forget the irony of a complaining comment complain about the complaining comments.

I was impressed by the huge YES vote being racked up by posts complaining about complainers. But, being a disagree-er, I clicked NO on one such post only to see the YES vote climb skywards. So that's why. To be fair, when I clicked YES on a different vote, the YES vote rose by three. It's all haywire and meaningless, folks.

I agree with what Geekoid said about people complaining about free software here, as I look forward only to see the pros and cons of the software itself and especially if any other professional (free, fair or affordable) solutions are available, as was so well explained by poster, Sue.

I have been using my old trustworthy and free (no installation needed) Pixie (I don't know if it can still be found) for all my needs as an artist (hex, html and rgb color spaces) but I feel this Pro picker will expand my options, although I am downloading it now and havent used i t yet. A welcome surprise to find it here!

Here's my 2 cents worth of a contribution then: this website has an interesting, original, online and totally free color forge and mixer we designed some years ago as an ongoing project component for our art website, if anyone wishes to check it out, here it is: http://www.intangible-designs.com.br/ColorTools/ColorTools.htm

Thanks GAOTD!

This forum is filled with a bunch of self-righteous self-appointed censors who would like nothing more than to banish people who don't agree with them or act exactly the same way as they do or whatever. Just shut up if you have nothing better to do than to complain about some set of posters on these forums. Worse than the complainers is the bombastic and stupid comments of these complainers about the complainers. Just get a life and and live it rather than trying to control other people's lives. This is not nazi germany, it is the year 2008 in the USA.

i agree with geekoid, there seem's to be much more whining moaning crybabies who really don't have anything better to say that "this is crap","i don't need this..." or "i could get this free at..." or similar. (sometimes it looks like these whiners just posted after having been dumped by a girl friend or had a bad day hair day.)

at the very least, give a valid reason why you don't like the product. these are the same people, if given the keys to a free car, would complain why the car wasn't made of gold. you don't like this site and don't have any constructive criticism to share...go to some other website and bother them with your whining bee-otch. lol

why did i have to write all this? - i should of just said- whining comments are a friggin boring read and you sound like a teenager on a chat line trying to sound "cool". yawn snore...zzzzzzzzzzzz

HELLO, people - software doesn't exist in a vacuum! I hate the complaints about complaints! Just say what you have to say about the product and STOP ANALYZING OTHER PEOPLE'S COMMENTS - it's ridiculous! People are entitled to their negative opinions -

Did it ever occur to you complaint complainers that some people may have tried or bought this software BEFORE seeing it here on GOTD? So they don't need to download here if they've tried the product and don't like it. And you wouldn't know that information because you don't know everything. Then again - some people are voting down the type of product not necessarily the brand. Some people are simply not interested in the giveaway so they vote know -

GOTD can take votes two ways, yeah: 1) at face value and just see that these many people like it and these many people hate it; and 2) as votes on the type of product on offer. If it gets a lot of thumbs up - they can assume that people like this particular product and/or that they want more giveaways like this offered in the future. If it gets lots of thumbs down - they can assume that people don't like this particular product and/or that they don't want more giveaways like this offered in the future.

I don't see what the big deal is about people voicing their negative opinions. And the telling part is that - you guys don't complain about people giving it positive comments or thumbs up without installing it first. I'd rather hear both sides, please. Stop bullying people into compliance with the way YOU think things should happen here. That's why the comments are open - obviously GOTD believes that people can say what they want and the software should speak for itself.

I finally got a chance to try out the alternatives to Color Picker Pro.

For the simple task of just finding out the color of a certain pixel on your screen, the most easy and simple program is ColorPix. Color Picker Pro and ColorPic are also very easy to use, but I feel the programs are a bit cluttered, when compared to ColorPix, because they have a few extra features that you may or may not need.

PicPick also does what all those three programs do but PicPick has multiple extra features that can make the program a handy asset over the other three if you ever need those tools.

The one advantage Color Picker Pro has over all the programs is that it can show the color code in multiple different formats as opposed to the others who are limited to 3 or 4 formats.

So, just for finding the color of a pixel (in the most common HTML/Hex format), I suggest:
ColorPix
Color Picker Pro
ColorPic
PicPick

Thanks to everyone that posted about alternatives.

I tried six times unsuccessfully to install this program (which was probably way too many times but I wanted to try this program out). It activated just fine on Windows Vista Home Basic 32bit, but installed? Not so much. So I give up.

Now my next problem is trying to choose between the freeware alternatives offered, which I always scour the comments for. I very much appreciate them and would hate to see them go away. I'm disabled and on a very fixed income. I need those informed suggestions which I don't know where to search for elsewhere.

Hate me if you like for saying so, but I wanted to show some support for the freeware alternative posters. They do serve more than one purpose than giving me choices when the giveaway just won't install. I too believe they spur on developers to include in their programs what there is a demand for, and to think creatively about how they can make their program different, or what can they do to lure fixed income freeware browswers like me to part with funds that I might think should go to the necessities of life instead of luxuries like software.

Correct me if I'm wrong but tabs started being used in free internet browser alternatives to IE first but now many software programs use them. Internet Explorer took forever to jump on the bandwagon but they eventually did. Why? Because it was a useful and sought after feature. This kind of marketing approach is everywhere not just on our computers. Think of the hamburger or the sandwich, the snack wrap, or the hot dog. All foods that used to be found in only one place until they proved so popular, nearly everyone started offering one. I could go on with lists of examples from every industry but I won't, because I hope you've gotten my point by now. For Pete's sake, this site itself even offers a freeware library.

So squabble all you want about the other types of posts. Perhaps some moderation is needed, perhaps not - about votes and who should be allowed to do so, whether we should only allow pos or neg. comments. I don't care.

But let the freeware alternative posters be heard by visitors to the site, GOTD, and software vendors alike. I believe they deserve a spot here.

(on a sidenote: i like the discussion going on as of current)

I would certainly think that negative comments are not entirely bad. It is whether they are constructive in nature or not. Merely saying "it sucks" is not going to do anyone any good; saying "perhaps the user guide could be improved" is.

Regarding the software, I would give it praise for its ease of use. right "out of the box" i learnt how to use it; there is little, or zero, learning curve to it.

I would like to tell those people who just give it a thumbs down "because they cannot find a use of it" to go away. You don't decide what this site gives you, you decide whether you can make use of what this site gives you. If you don't think its useful, fine. Just dont give it a thumbs down, because honestly, some software are great, and some just aren't.

I've accumulated over a dozen free color pickers, incl. #12-SUE's excellent PIKPICK color toolkit and the others mentioned above. I disagree strongly that Color Picker Pro "rocks" but its zoom ability might help those with vision problems and it offers a deeper than avg range of color formats. Personally, I found the controls/capture procedure awkward.
Everyone's welcome to check out idahl's color pallettizer quest forum thread. Feel free to chime in with your color picker preferences, especially if you know where she can find a decent downloadable color palletizer.

Up until now, I've used a free color picker and been quite happy with it. Then I saw this and thought I'd give it a try. For anyone who does anything with color, I'd just like to say that this is a great program.

In my case, the best feature is what you can do after you've picked your color. I am an amateur interior designer and being able to put a color in, then find it's complimentary color or it's contrast is a big plus. Not only will it help me as I get started, but I can learn from it as well.

And about those negative comments? Just because you don't understand a program or have no use for it, doesn't make it a bad program.

I have to say, this is a pretty nice little program. Very intuitive and easy to use. Options that can be selected are very usable in the real world. It has a small footprint so it doesn't take up much of your screen. Very small (takes up just a little over 342KB) AND it works on Windows X64 Bit OSes.

The program lets me hover over any item currently in view (even on the desktop) and find out what the proper color settings are. There are many more features on this little app you just have to see for yourself!

This one's a keeper!

My hats off to the programmer(s) who put this together. Maybe you can get Adobe to bundle it into their Photoshop and Illustrator apps (wink)! Use GAOTD as a reference :-)

I'm just amazed at how many people come here, and say "eh, nothing special with this giveaway" or "this is worthless" or "there's a ton of other FREE programs that do the same thing."

PEOPLE...don't complain...this site is FREE too. If you don't want something that they are giving away...SHUT UP and don't say "oh, I don't like this, or need it!" So!! Maybe others DO like it or want it.

Stick to REVIEWING the software AFTER you have installed and tried it....none of us want to hear you complain about "another worthless piece of software today."

If you don't want it, fine...but don't complain or bitch because there is a site OFFERING free software for you.

If you had read my previous post (#68) you would have noticed that I didn't say this SW is useless or worse than other FREE APPLICATIONS!!

So as for as I'm concerned my thumb is UP or not DOWN for this GAOTD (but I won't vote it).

What I said is that Professional SW like this one should not be restricted for personal use only, because they are usually used by professional people and anyway it's possible to find better or similar alternatives for free on the web which can also be used for commercial purposes.

Understand the difference?

The GAOTD is a great service but sometimes too much "restrictive" for the reasons mentioned above, even though of course is not compulsory to download all GAOTD every day.

The idea behind this initiative is that many sites and publishers offer trial downloads.

The software will be available for download for 24 hours (or more, if agreed by software publisher) and that software will be absolutely free. That means - not a trial, not a limited version - but a registered and legal version of the software will be free for GAOTD.

In fact, according to GAOTD team:

"The software product will be presented in its full functionality, WITHOUT ANY LIMITATIONS save for those mentioned in Terms and Conditions. We will pay the software publisher for the Giveaway license, and our visitors will only receive those after downloading a special verification program and agreeing to the Terms and Conditions, thus protecting software publishers’ interests and making our initiative beneficial for both clients and publishing companies."

But this is not true because professional Sw like this can be used just for PERSONAL USE (so they are LIMITED versions) and not for commercial purposes, although GAOTD always pays the software publisher for the Giveaway license.

So what's the point of paying the licence and then not allow GAOTD visitors to use the (free) GAOTD for commercial purposes if there are plenty of FREE ALTERNATIVES on the WEB that do the same JOB for free without any commercial restriction whatsoever ??

It doesn't make sense, isn't it??

In my humble view, since GAOTD team always pay the licence to the SW publishers, they should at least impose publishers to grant a COMMERCIAL LICENCE to GAOTD's subscribers to allow them to use their professional SW for commercial use as well or alternatively offer something more useful for the mass of the PC users whose alternatives cannot be found on the web for FREE such as for instance software for eCommerce or editors to write and publish professional eBooks on the web or even better a professional online translator application to translate a whole website in different languages?

If I'm not mistaken such kind of programs are just SHAREWARE and are never offered here for free by GAOTD, aren't they??

Cheers from Italy!!

Giovanni

Anne-ology. It's a software developer's or graphic designer's type of program, if that helps. #82, Whiterabbit - another classy comment as usual. Again, I firmly sympathize with your frustrations. Keep up the good work!

As an artist and web designer, I find these kind of programs really helpful. In fact, I've used a previous version of today's giveaway and found it very useful.
However, when I started to install today's giveaway, my antispyware (Super AntiSpyware) program immediately popped up with this warning

Trojan.Dropper/Gen.Process Unknown
Processes: sgsgoss.exe, gwcea.exe, cdkapw.exe, erawe.exe

Makes me very nervous about this piece of software when my antispyware goes off so I aborted the install until I can find out more about these particular processes.

Hi Watcher13, I see you point. I wasn't meaning just the negativity; but I see from my post that that is what I'm implying.

The main point of my post was actually to suppor Geekoid in what he/she said as I really do think that the negative comments are killing this site. I realize that some of the seemingly positive comments are actually saying nothing, but from the perspective of a developer, saying that is preferable to what some say. We're all human after all and anything bad said about work done by any individual is bound to make that person feel some negative vibes, and would probably stop some from offering new software here. Of course that's just an opinion. I may be totally wrong in my assumptions, but I don't think I am.

As for disagreeing with me. Hey man, isn't that what makes the world go round, lol. I'm in no way perfect and make many mistakes and even more blunders when posting on these forums. Thanks for your opinion. It's refreshing to see an argument pan out politely. :)

have a great day folks.

I was skeptical, but this program rocks! I update my own website and do some (very) limited graphical designs for my business and my family, and having the ability to accurately match colors is important. Even better is having the ability to match colors from other websites. The program is small, intuitive, and very easy to use. I use both Paint and (my favorite) paint.net [freeware available at http://www.getpaint.net/], and neither give you this much flexibility and accuracy. Definitely a keeper!

Didn't mention in my previous post, which is so long it may get screened out. There are 2 free color pickers in GOTD's own freeware library.

Confused as to what this program is -
is it an art program?; is it a paint program?; is it a view program?;
I guess I won't download only because I don't understand when I would use a program I don't understand - I read the posts, was shocked by the negative comments, confused by the positive comments, and still have nary a clue what this is, yet wish these software makers continued success.

Under no circumstances should you ever turn off your Firewall. Security Surveys have shown/proven that it takes less than 30 seconds for a computer without a Firewall to be Hacked. A person entering the Internet without a Firewall is usually Hacked very quickly but never realizes it. Anti-Virus Programs are dis-abled by Hackers. Once a Hacker has access to your computer he can do as he please. Only he has so much more knowledge than you.
No Not Dis-able Firewall !
