@10. re your query how did it get popular; truthfully, when it was maintained and updated by its original author "Peter Norton" it was truly an amazing piece of software! But once bought by Symantec it steadily went downhill. I have 33 years experience in IT and I have seen a lot of good software go down the tubes :-( This is only my (yes, very experienced) opinion, use it only at your own risk and risky it will be.

Cheers and good luck.

Thanks to Enplase Research + GOTD.

Such software is like a knife.

You can use a knife in cooking to prepare meals.
Or you can use a knife to stab someone.

You are supposed to know how to use your instruments properly.

There are many good reasons why users want to have duplicate files in various different places of their PC's hard disk.

So it is silly to mindlessly remove all duplicate files.

This is the message that comes up after install:

"Thank you for installing our software from Giveawayoftheday.com!

Maybe you know that the software you download and install during the Giveaway period comes with the following important limitations:

    No free technical support
No free upgrades to future versions
    Strictly personal usage

But with today's deal, you can get full (not limited) version of
Clone Terminator for just $29 $14.50!
Get full version now! (50% off)

Sincerely yours, Developer Team"

Isn't this a full version without technical support and future upgrades?

This is very confusing and misleading!!!

Hmm... I'm not understanding what the point of those BASS and other audio libraries installed with the program is. Does the program actually decompress audio and compare them sample by sample?

Interesting find in the about box: "Special thanks to Jason Howard (aka BuBBy)". Is that our BuBBy?

To developers: Most of the time there's no good reason to use a custom skin. It just adds heft and extra processing. For this specific program, Windows 6+ includes a fine looking wizard template that will also work for Windows versions below.

found it too difficult to work with. Did quickly find duplicates in a small data folder. Looked at a few and then wanted to work on later but window stayed on top. Has no minimize button.

Hi, I should be the last person giving advice on this and similar Software..
I admit being beyond any help, or HOPE:)) Such is the scale of my daily (almost) "sins" of looking/searching for something on my big drives only to immediately drag it out of there, COPY(!) to my so called "handy" Folder on C.. - to then regularly (big deal, lol) copy these handy Folders back to big Drives with different dates, that's all.. - that it would take ONLY some genius and very, very intuitive Software to realize what's what..

Differently - I wouldn't trust them now, too late you see, I wouldn't even trust my eyes that yes, this IS definitely a Duplicate of text, or picture, and NOT slightly altered (therefore better and more important:) 2, 3, 10.. Files of the same I decided to keep long ago.
I won't even go to Corel.., various Projects "in progress" or finished, nor to it's "self preserving" Files and Folders..

So my advice would be this: Unless You decided long time ago (or perhaps today) to start using Duplicates Cleaning Software on REGULAR basis - Stick to it!
Today indeed could be the beginning of much easier and clutter-free life?:))
There is tones of good technical advice on Today's Offer page!

"Compare Folders"
http://winmerge.org/ will compare files in folders. (How else can anything "compare" folders?)
It does a lot more, so newbies will need to learn how to use it.
And WinMerge is open source.

RE: #30

I've worked with computers since the IBM 1512 and have also worked at IBM (where a program was named after me). In my opinion, Norton is the very best security program for the general public and 99% of other users. Norton's support is excellent, I've never encountered any issues of false alarms, and, more important, none of the computers on which I have installed it (since 2004 or so) have become infected in any way.

I won't be trying this.

I can't recall which dupe finders I tried, but settled on doublekiller free version.
Warnings:
DK deletes permanently, not to recycle bin.
The handy "check the first dupes (in sets of dupes)", isn't so handy because sometimes the folder of the first flipflops to being the second (I wonder what criteria DK uses to display as "first" in list...)

Tips, assuming your primary purpose is to free disk space:
Check for files large than [choose size]. Then click Size column to compare the largest dupes.

If processing large number of files, check all criteria: Date, Size, Name, CRC. Next, you can uncheck date Criteria (since copied or unzipped files may time-shift). Finally, reprocess with Name criteria unchecked.
If DK shows many files in parallel folders, I prefer to open side-by-side in xplorer2lite, and manually compare & delete using "sync" features. Then return to DK and run again.

Startup DK from a shortcut with the Maximized" property.

A very convenient dream feature would be comparing files to files inside archive (zip, 7z, rar, etc) files.
