Just a heads up. If you try GoodSync, pay very close attention and do a full back-up first. It is very confusing to set up and will delete files from the source drive if they do not exist on the target drive without warning when doing a synchronization. I found this out the hard way and I do NOT recommend GoodSync under any circumstances. Use at your own risk.

#23 regards AutoVer - Thanks Guy - exactly what I've been looking for. I installed Beyond Sync a few weeks ago via BDJ. It does a reasonable job, considering there aren't many real-time file sync apps to choose from. Unfortunately I've had stability probs with Beyond Sync. I keep getting memory leak error messages when shutting down the PC.

AutoVer does everything I need. Enough useful features, not bloated with features I'd never use. Cheers.

"I hope the the GOTD team take Mike’s suggestion about not being allowed to vote unless you download and try the software or something similar."

I agree with the above. Having hundreds of thumbs up within a hour of a new release (as happened a week or so ago) certainly was a rigged vote.

"I also think posting alternative software is harmful to the software publisher and should not be allowed."

I totally disagree with this. Allowing users and software publishers to see what free programs are available might help a developer realize why his/her latest-greatest software isn't selling as many copies as they would like.

Let's get real about this, do you really expect people who are going to comment on GOTD software to -not- compare it to free software? If they find the free software to be better, they should continue to be able to say so. And I also find some of the free software to be good enough (or better) to do what I need done vs: some of the GOTD software.

OK, so my comment about this software ........ I use [not free] PowerDesk file manager that has a "Synchronize Folders" function that allows various copy situations (new, older etc) so I didn't download today's offering and I promise to not vote thumbs up/down on it.

XP SP3
v4.3.27.562

registration key received immediately via email
(junk, throwaway, email address accepted)

no Help
Help links open IE regardless of your selected default browser - fail

this is the Standard, not Pro, version

do not like the way you select the directory trees, no drag&drop.
at least you can paste a link in

> Only one Task Folder
so seemingly in the Pro version you could have multiple source &/or
destination folders. in Standard, only one of each

coloring, of a highlighted task, makes it difficult to read

first task set up was to clone (one way) my browser /Cache/,
12,968 files in 4,113 directories, 445MB

Preview accomplished speedily. ability to exclude files/trees.
different "views" available.

first it recreated the directory structure, then it went through
& recreated (sync'd) the files - not limited to mention 1000 files?
the directory tree was recreated in its entirety (though i'm pretty
sure i deselect particular (a small number of) files/trees from the
sync, yet they were copied?

a small (single file) update on the source end, & re-runnng the Preview
took just as long as originally. when View is set to All, no method
to "find" the one change (out of 14,948 files). setting View to one
of the other methods made the file immediately stand out.

Preview shows "totals", but does not show the "totals" of the to be
synced items only (only 20,000 bytes in this case). i'm wrong, actually
it does. only i was looking at the Preview window /after/ it had
sync'd

don't know what method (hash, bit by bit, file date/time) it uses to
determine what is in sync or not? (see below)

directory date/time are not maintained between source/target
(not such a big deal, necessarily, but to be aware)

window/columns/splits are resizeable

i "hate" the Add Task "wizard", would much prefer that the Task Editor
open directly. didn't realize that the Editor provided additional
flexibility (till now)

didn't look at Auto or Scripting

installs into directory of your choice, though logs & whatnot are
stored in %APPDATA%.
appears that ConfigDir (logs & whatnot) can be changed from %APPDATA%?

online help (which i did not look through) appears it would be sufficent,
though it should be provided directly. forum is brand new so that is
an unknown entity.

works, isn't bad, better then others i have looked at in the past, it's
worth a look, though don't know that it is going to replace my current
sync program (FreeFileSync)

(don't know why there were so many negative votes on this)

Take a look at @GertJ's comment (#4). It gives the link to Beyond Sync edition's comparison table, where it says:
"Files can be synced per sync	<1,000"
So, if the folder we want to back up has more files will the program inform us about it or will it let us think that the sync has been performed normally?

P.S.: @Giovanni, respect...!

  Hello Again Folks . . .

It's the Return Of The Macs !!! - :o)

-------------------------
This section is aimed at helping those who do NOT understand Sync Softwares etc. - NOT to patronise those who do !
For those wondering what this software is for - whether they need it or not . . .

Sync for those who hadn't realised it is short for "Synchronise" & as it's name suggests the Sync software compares 2 or more Folders / Drives & then copies & deletes where required to make both sources IDENTICAL.

To prevent any confusion . . . a SYNC software is very basic form of a BACKUP & RESTORE Software & it CAN HELP to keep a copy of your files etc. BUT NOT to backup / Restore a crashed system drive. A SYNC software is far more basic than most Backup softwares. IT IS NOT A REPLACEMENT TO A BACKUP / RESTORE SOFTWARE - but rather a compliment to work alongside it. Usually a BACKUP Software will copy Data / Drive structure etc. from Point A to Point B - ready to be copied back to Point A after a problem etc.

It's like Point A is the Master & Point B the slave - Point A is always the original to be copied.

Whereas with SYNC Software BOTH Points A & B are the Original AND the slave at the same time.

The way it works is - YOU tell the software which 2 - ( or more ) - sources you want to keep identical - the software then looks at BOTH SOURCES & compares them.

- Where the software finds that there are files in Box A & not in Box B - those files are copied from A to B so both are the same. - This works in BOTH DIRECTIONS - meaning that if it also finds files missing from Box A which are present in Box B - these too will be copied.

BUT the software doesn't just COPY - once an initial comparison / syncronisation has taken place & the software knows exactly which files are in which location by the records it created - it also DELETES - meaning that if you had a file in Box A which you deleated - the software will see by the Date / Time stamp on the remaining file that it should no longer exist in Box B as you've deleated the original in Box A.

To simplfy it - you have 2 children & you want them both to have EXACTLY the same of everything with no favouritsm - you take them into the sweetshop

Child A has picked 6 penny chews / 10 boiled sweets & 4 chocolate bars

Child B has picked 4 penny chews / 12 boiled sweets & only 2 chocolate bars.

In order that everything stays equal - Child A must hand over 1 penny chew & 1 chocolate bar to Child B - AND - Child B must give Child A one of his boiled sweets. NOW they've received equal value so they are syncronised.

Now - say it turns out that Child A couldn't afford 1 of the Chocolate Bars & had to put it back - you then decide that in order to keep the peace - Child B must do likewise.

This is the same with Sync software - IF it finds that Folder A has had 5x MP3s ADDED & 1x .Doc file REMOVED since the last Sync - Folder B will have the same .Doc file DELEATED AND Folder A's new MP3s will be COPIED into Folder B also !

. . . SO - WHY would you need a Sync software if you already have Backup Software ?

It's a good question BUT like I said before it's not a case of either /or -

For example - You have :

1x PC

1x Laptop &

1x NetBook

- You have a mixture of documents & MP3's across all 3 of them as you've created / downloaded - when you were using each particular unit at different times throughout the day.

Well . . . you simply tell the SYNC Software where to find the Documents / Music Folders etc. on each of the 3 machines - the SYNC software looks at all 3 units & then copies across the new / missing files to each unit so you no longer have a mixture but instead ALL machines have ALL the MP3s & Files etc. as an EXACT MATCH !

Similarly if you were to delete 1 MP3 from the PC - during the next Sync - the same MP3 would be deleated from the Laptop & NetBook AUTOMATICALLY - without you having to remember which file it was !

Since I've never explained the Sync in this manner before - I hope I've NOT made it more confusing & that it was easy enough to follow & it that DID actually MAKE SENSE !!!
- ( It sort of made sense to me . . . I THINK ! ) - :o)
-------------------------

Comment by PocketAces @ No.28 = " I also think posting alternative software is harmful to the software publisher and should not be allowed."

Hi
Sorry but I have to disagree with you on this point for 3 reasons -
-
1: - By displaying what the alternatives are - the publisher of the Giveaway is shown what He / She is up against AND what is expected of their software's Performance etc. AND PRICE.
-
2: - Say Joe Bloggs missed todays giveaway BUT it was a software type he could really make good use of - the sort of program he requires desperately - sure he could UT here he can follow a recommedation or 2 & hopefully he'll find something close to the Giveaway Tomorrow.
-
3: - As has been pointed out several times today - the Giveaway is a stripped Back Ultra-Basic version of the Pro Software - whereas if they are shown up agains much stronger FREE wares - maybe they'll offer the Pro version next time so as to avoid looking weak against a freebie ! Remember - there's a BIG difference between a GOTD Special Edition which is the Basic version WITH ADDED EXTRAS & just giving us the cheapest version they can.
-
As I mentioned a couple of days ago in my post here - "The whole reason for the publishers to give software to us for free is - You try the software & IF you like what you've tried - you then decide to BUY the license - allowing you FREE UPGRADES & Assistance etc. - Also - you're likely to tell Friends & Family about the Great Software you love & they buy it too - meaning We Win with Free Softwares every day & the publishers win with sales AND Positive Word Of Mouth !"

How can you possibly decide that you like a software if you can't try the features you require ? - Also - what kind of positive word of mouth is a company going to receive if it's only prepared to give us the bottom of the pile ??

Without wanting to sound ungrateful - do we deserve to be treated so cheaply ? - While I accept that we're getting something for nothing - you have to ask if such minimal stripped down softwares should be charged for in the first place which brings us back to point 1: - just My opinion for what it's worth !!!

-------------------------

-

-------------------------

I hope this has been helpful for some of you :o)

-------------------------

-
Here in the UK - we're 8 Hours ahead of GOTD - meaning it changes at 8AM - SO . . .
If you check back late tomorrow - I may have been able to answer a few more of your Questions !!!

For further personal assistance - Please Contact Me Anytime Here . . .

Cheers for now & HAVE A GREAT DAY FOLKS !!
