After reading the first two words in the description, (and the rest of them) I decided I did not want to try this software. Sorry, but if a company doesn't even care about hiring a good interpreter, it makes me wonder about how much the company really cares about their products.

The PRO version of this program (so NOT this GAOTD) is very good...that's why I defined this software as a GEM!!

Installed and registered without a hitch and worked flawlessly on the 1 site of my 5 that I tried it on. I'll definitely use it on the others. Didn't test the MySql database backup yet.

Sure there are other ways to do these tasks, but that's the thing about computers: there is just about always more than one way to do something. Some of them take more work than others, though. BackupSF Light 2.7.4 is an easy way to backup all or or selected files/folders on one's site/s.

Back here (see #32) to see if there are more interesting opinions, from people who miss the point (confusing website backup and regular backup) to webmasters (why they downloaded and what they think).

Usually, when I come back, I don't post (why would I?). But something's gone very wrong today.

What amazes me is the number of votes down for almost all posters, no matter what or who, excepted #3, #6, #8 for which I wonder why they got so many votes up.

I suggest GOTD to investigate the votes.

@29 (Giovanni): I wonder why you consider this software as a "gem". No matter the version, it is not, definitely.

I think people are being too hard on this software. It not only allows you to backup and FTP site to your computer automatically for free (which is impossible to find), you also get to back up your site database too. And you can choose to put your backup in the cloud (i.e. Dropbox). Wow! Love every minute of this software.

This is software that I could use, so I installed it and gave it a try. I like the simplicity, but overall I have to give it a thumbs down because of many issues: I checked the "Backup now" checkbox during project setup, but it didn't start a backup, and afterward I could not get the Backup button in the Backup Now column to work. I fiddled around with the backup schedule and eventually got it to start a backup. However, it would not correctly backup the files at the main level of a folder when some of the sub-folders were unchecked. The process of marking folders to back up is a bit tedious in the type of folder selection window used, particularly since it doesn't remember your settings and you have to start over each time you want to edit something. Each backup file seems to replace the previous one, causing it to be lost (why??). Presumably the program has to be running to do a scheduled backup, so you're expected to leave it running all the time on your system. The Help is too minimal. Too many issues, not a keeper.

Tried again, BackupSF now fails with: "SIZE not allowed in ASCII mode". Obviously de default settings during FTP are wrong, cannot change that in options.
Definitely de-install, stay with Filezilla.

I guess that many new PC/MAC users today know that backup is easier and cheaper than ever before ! With that fact on place we are able to look at software like todays GAOTD.

Software backups is stupid... Why ? It never do more backup than you tell it to do ! I have Windows, Norton and some 3rd part software on my PC and none of them backup my F: drive ! None !
BUT I use my F: drive for important photos and videos and documents, so there should be some backup work to do... and yes, I do that myself, because then do I always know 100% where the main files is... on my extern 1.5 TB HDD that is turned off when not in use ! I have all the files on my intern HDD as well.

What do you need to backup ? How often do you need to backup ? Why backup within your own 4 walls ?

1. When you have a less than 4.7 GB to backup then use a DVD RW+ media. You can even use this media the same way as a HDD !
2. > 4.7 GB then buy an extern HDD and turn it off when you don´t use it. (last 10x longer, maybe 10+ years without any error !)
3. The second you make a backup online then you´re cut-off when your providers system is down.

Do you have important and non-replaceable photos then would I never trust one media. I would always use at least DVD RW+ media (best quality you can get, TDK) and a well-known brand of a HDD (Western Digital works fine)!
