#40: BRYCO WROTE: Sorry that I neglected to add the link:
http://www.avs4you.com/Register.aspx?type=install.
The reason I ask is I hate to get used to a program to find after a year it no longer works and cannot properly uninstall it.
So, is this a GiveAway program or just a one year lease of it?
Comment by Bryco — February 23rd, 2007 at 8:41 am

-- Great post, Bryco. Your post is nice because that is good and important information to know. Thank you. Very helpful.

--I didn't check, but sometimes some companies make a distinction between "registration" and "activation". Registration can sometimes be giving your name and address etc and submitting it to be recorded by the developer, sometimes for support purposes. While 'activation' is the actual enabling of the functioning of the software by inputting the key code. Maybe you're functional but couldn't connect to submit your name. In which case, I'd leave it at that.

#64 ZIPZAP wrote to Jhon:
So are you saying that if we install all these programs onto a USB stick (thumb drive), we can then use them on ANY computer which we plug the stick into??? That would be awesome since we wouldn’t lose them if we upgrade to a new computer in the future!
Comment by zipzap — February 23rd, 2007 at 12:16 pm

-- Well. Only if the key code is embedded into the APP itself or solely contained in files in the app's home folder. That won't work if the activation depends upon entries in the registry or the windows system folders. In that case if you saved/moved the registry to a new pc it might. Of course, that's the part that either nobody backs up, or nobody wants to move. ;)

-- Exactly! Thanks Dany! I whole-heartedly agree, all cultures and languages and people should be welcome. And you are also right in the oft-misperceived assumption by those who have not yet traveled so much, not the whole world is born english speaking, so true. In fact, it's funny when people learn that english is not only not the #1 native spoken language, it's not #2. And it's not only not #2, it's not even 3rd. And depending upon the list, some people are surprised when they are awakened to the fact that english is not even #4 but rates somewhere depending on the list down at about 5th on the list. #1 of course is Mandarin chinese. #2 is Cantonese. #3 is hindi. and #4 is Spanish. (although the spots of #3, #4, and #5 often exchange around and jockey for position depending on how it's measured and the weather - for example some lists will combine Mandarin + Cantonese and call it 'chinese', and then put English or Spanish 2nd or 3rd.) But in any case, it ain't #1! that's for sure. :)

I think it's going to catch a lot of anglo-centric people by surprise when they wake up and find that the ole 'sleeping dragon' now has 2 billion of the world's people, Astronauts, a space program, nuclear technology, a land area larger than the US. Everyone's going to be speaking Chinese in the future probably. lol. Ni hao!

#81 SITE SEER WROTE: One word: Themida
Comment by Site Seer — February 23rd, 2007 at 5:45 pm

-- SITE SEER, you are correct! I agree with you. And to everyone: I cannot emphasize enough, that this THEMIDA stuff is awful! DO NOT PATRONIZE companies that use this! And for the average user, if you installed this and get this thing embedded into your system, you will probably be infested with this thing for a long time and have a hell of a time trying to get all of the pieces of it out of your system. (And no, no antivirus program, anti rootkit program, nor any antispyware program snags ALL the pieces of this, you have to do driver level editing to get this thing out, re-enabling protected and locked Legacy keys and all kinds of crap. It costs much valuable time! - vote this kind of thing poor, and don't support companies that use it or its previous derivatives.)

#17 4xerciZor WROTE: "So how do I activate this if I did not install this program into my C: drive? It does not show up in my list of programs, so I cannot follow the stated activation process. A pretty large program, and I am running out of C space as well. Any suggestions?
Comment by 4xerciZor — February 23rd, 2007 at 3:57 am "

IF it's the case that you have 1 actual physical hard drive with simply a small C partition, that's getting full, but you have a larger D partition that has lots of space (*COUGH*SONYVAIO!*COUGH!*) then you can use a utility program called PARTITION MAGIC to make C bigger and D smaller. So you can have more space to install apps and for your system! Works great.

Ok, now some advice:
- Number 1, always make a backup.
- Number 2, see rule #1.
- Number 3, if it's the case that you have simply 1 small physical C drive and the entire thing is low on space and your other drive is physically a 2nd hard drive....NEVERMIND. What I'm talking about right now does not apply to you. Just use Acronis Trueimage to clone your C to a bigger disk. Done.
- Number 4, DO NOT use symantec's version of the Partition Magic program! Symantec bought the company that made that good program a bit ago and their versions went downhill. Try to get the original version from "PowerQuest"...version 6 or 8, something like that. It's a lot better.
- Number 5, And yes! If all goes properly, this program can repartition your drive without deleting your data! But again to be safe make a backup. Never had a problem here. But your mileage may vary.

Hope that helps.

#97 Dave wrote: I see some people had troubles with this one.. ok.. dont fret if you needed a free sound editor then you’re in luck.
Audacity: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
Waveosaur (my favorite): http://www.waveosaur.com
no copy protection, activation, or other hassles..
actually for waveosaur theres not even an installation.. doesnt need one since its just one small file.
for the person asking for free multi-track audio recording.. my suggestion would be to give Krystal Audio Engine a look: http://www.kreatives.org/kristal/index.php
anymore audio related questions are sure to be answered at the kvr audio forums (www.kvraudio.com)

-- Hey, NICE POST, Dave! Knew of those, but Thanks for making a nice helpful post. informative and offering a nice variety of solutions. GJ.

I will add one to that list. It's called GOLDWAVE from GOLDWAVE.com (almost free, its more like shareware, works for free but has a little message that says Hey, you've gotten some good use out of this proggie, why dontcha buy it?? hint.) :) But Goldwave has lots of advanced features too. And its quick to load and bring up, can do flanging, and reverb, and pitch shifting and gain normalization, and echo, and mixing down tracks, and save in multiple formats and bitrates, and do histograms and waveform analysis. Pretty sharp, just go look at the screenshots on its home site goldwave.com you'll see. I like it even more than Audacity. Goldwave rocks. :)

#96 Anonymous WROTE: "Well I was interested in having a look at this program, until I saw the Themida error message. It’s clear AVS are more interested in stopping people who don’t want to purchase the software from using it (ie. Pirates) than making the software usable for people who would want to purchase the software (customers).
I guess the best option is to purchase someone elses product, or wait for someone to crack this and steal this one. Sounds like AVS have really thought this Themida thing through. :\

AAAGHH! That THEMIDA stuff is AWFUL!! I have not checked yet, but if THIS program has it, then I am deleting this program OUTRIGHT. I don't care if its bought, paid, free, shareware, or whatever, that THEMIDA stuff gets into your hidden driver section and is a pain to have to go in and get it out of there! Horrible. Developers: DONT EVER use that Themida junk! That stuff should be purged out of existence. If this program has it, then I'm giving this program a thumbs DOWN.

Taillandier (#71): "C:\Program Files\Common Files\AVSMedia" should already exist, although you might have to create "Licence" yourself. If it doesn't, Windows was installed on another drive and you should look for that directory in that drive. e.g. if Windows is installed on D:, you should look for "D:\Program Files\Common Files\AVSMedia". The easiest way to figure this out is to do this: Start -> Run -> type in "%programfiles%" (with or without quotes).

zerohour (#79) - I'm well aware of this; However, just how many versions of it have you seen? 1.0 was the only one for a while, then a little after came 2.0. This is the latest. Now, I admit this may just be because it's a fairly complete package (which is what I said about CEP!), but that doesn't stop what I said from being true.

Stan (#94) - Except that probably most of those software titles will not see Themida as being a problem, and may not necessarily be able to remove Themida's infections quite simply because of the way Themida works: by hiding itself. And if it manages to do this, who says some random virus that infects it can't?
And in regards to Vista, well... someone has to be the guinea pig, might as well be him ;>

#96 (Anonymous) - It's not pirates they're trying to stop. It just can't be. You can crack such a program without even running it (hex editors, yay!), so Themida isn't really effective in blocking such things. You're quite right: It only really stops customers. As I said, anything that complains that I'm running software such as SysInternals' titles is guilty until proven innocent. I do not like it when I'm told that I can't inspect what a piece of software is doing on my computer.

JEG (#98) - Well, took you long enough to say whether or not that worked for you.
