#36 Marilyn, from what I know MP3 taggers are little pieces of extra data added to each MP3 (possibly by the creator, I'm not sure) which give the title of the piece plus other useful bits of information which exclusively identify an MP3. The Tag tools let you alter this data to something that suits you better. When you transfer an MP3 to an MP3 player for instance, the embedded tag usually shows up on screen when you choose a song to play. That's been my experience, but other much better informed people will I'm sure correct and add to this.

#33 Rich, first read the 'readme.txt' that came in the zip package you downloaded. It normally contains full instructions. If that doesn't work for you try uninstalling, then reinstalling (before the offer ends) and trying a different way. Some of the GOTD software doesn't confirm it's registered, yet still is. As I haven't downloaded this app I don't know how this one does it. Hopefully some folk who've done it successfully today will help you.

If you finally don't succeed consider trying one of the other good freeware Tagger tools out there, such as:

ID3-TAGIT 3
MP3TAG
TagScanner - http://www.xdlab.ru/en/
MP3 Tag Editor
Totally Free Tag Editor
TigoTago
Picard Tagger

I've seen good reviews and user recommendations for all of these.

Good luck,

I just briefly tested very basic tasks and Autumn works so I am giving a tentative thumbs up. As noted the other day in a comment, it isn't really possible to fully test a product in only 24 hours, but so far it has worked with id3 1.1 tags. I have no doubt I may get the problems others experienced if I fully utilized Autumn, but since it doesn't do the one thing I want, (which I can't find in any of the alternatives mentioned in other comments either) which is create and sort mp3s into directories based on id3 tag criteria, i.e., artist, album, etc., I am probably not going to continue to test it.

So, I am sticking with Mp3 Tag Tools for editing, sorting and creating mp3 directories based on author, artist, etc. This app hasn't been updated in about six years, but here you go if you want to try it out - it also works in Vista: http://massid3lib.sourceforge.net/

@36
A tagger changes the tags in music files. The tags are information about the music file stored within the music file, such as artist, title, and album. They are mostly useful if you are dealing with large numbers of music files that you need to change the tags for, or for some taggers (not this one), retrieving tag information from an external database.

I have the same problem of the program crashing when trying to access the "Pattern Manager..." . This time on Vista Home Premium 64 SP1.

Also, the "Go" button on the "File-Rename mode" option remains disabled, no matter what I do. I added files by dragging from explorer, and I see them in the application. I tried to select none, one, all, etc, without effect. I tried to change all the paramters and checkboxes. Nothing. The "Go" button remains disabled, and it won't rename anything.

I have used Tag&Rename for years. Never crashed or did anything foul to my system. Also will research amazon etc for proper album tags with identifiable file names. Next time! Thanks anyway.
