Well the program looked good to me until i tried to run it without administrator rights. It ran trial version instead. As do not like to run most programs with admin rights it will not be a keeper for me.

Great program. I have an MP3 player and I use it for travelling by bus. I love listening to music but sometimes I just want to engross myself in hearing a story. I've downloaded it and now using it for the first time...wow...that is so neat. Thanks 'GiveAwayOfTheDay' gang.
You've help me discover new things...

# MIKE

Thanks Mike for your great and detailed review: as always I've really appreciate your comments!

Just a question for you: taking into account that I already have a copy of Angel's Vox in my USB DRIVE (it was given away here a few months ago, remember?), what fits better for you: the PORTABLE version of Audiobook Downloader Pro 1.2 or the regular version??

Thanks in advance for your consideration.

Say, instead of having to update the program to get a new database, how about incremental online updates? Even better, how about hosting the database online and allowing the user to choose what specific genre/author/publishers/etc. that they'd like to cache? Sure, the database is not huge right now, but when it is, it would be dumb to download the same data over again.

I can probably make a SQLite search and download program for under $29.95. How about lowering the price, unless there's something we can't find for free on the intertubez?

I downloaded the portable version. It installed and activated fine on my Win7-64 laptop's SD card. I like that it provides the option of changing the book download location. Not giving me that option is always a deal breaker for me.

I've been looking for an easy way to grab some of the free audiobooks. I've been an Audible subscriber for years but cut back my subscription to the basic level (no books, just discount) since their format has become difficult to use. I have a huge library (at one time I was getting 2 books a month for $15 and really stocked up), quite a few books left that I haven't listened to, but they don't work on all my devices.

Mark Twain is an ancestor, and I have a goal to read all his books. I travel a lot, 6 hour drives each time, so have lots of time to listen. This will make downloading much easier. I haven't checked how it responds with dial-up but the one-click advantage of an unattended overnight download would be a plus for me since I have a bandwidth limit with my wireless card.

IF this works well with a dial-up connection and doesn't constantly time-out, it would be worth the money for someone like me. Otherwise, I wouldn't be willing to pay as much as they're asking.

Thanks GOTD and SuperUtils.

fake software. just go to edit"list all available audiobooks" and you got the list of what you can find (aprox 4000 titles) if it ain't in that list you can not find i with this software.
Great names like Stephen King, Isaac Asimov or Robert A Heinlein are not present while i know there are audiobooks available for these authors

thumbs down, i don't wanna pay for software that performes worse then when i type my search in google and i do't want it for free either

#12: "... The visually impaired are a group who can most benefit from a program of this type, yet the interface was certainly not designed with them in mind. "

NOT disagreeing really, but the big *market* for audiobooks is just people that want to multitask, e.g. listening while driving, or maybe relaxing on a plane flight, where an mp3 player is much easier to carry than a hard cover or paperback. The visually impaired do benefit most, but they're not the one's the audiobook market always targets.

That said & if it helps, those with some visual impairment can often benefit from high contrast settings &/or large font displays in win7, &/or when your hardware supports it, setting the display resolution lower than the max with a larger monitor, or perhaps even using something like a cheaper, smaller HDTV rather than a PC monitor... I've seen several HDTVs from 19"28" priced the same or less than a PC monitor, that natively display at 720p, which would make text & icons & such much larger than the native display for a same-sized PC monitor. Many PCs have HDMI connections already, or you could use a DVI -> HDMI adapter, or for older systems I've seen VGA -> HDMI converters &/or USB -> HDMI converters for ~$25 on sale at sites like meritline.com.

* * *

#14: "... My father is completely blind and the only thing he has that he enjoys is his talking books. He has a machine that plays these books on CDs ... So if this works, it would be very useful for me to make books on CD for him. What I’m asking is, if anyone also knows of any other programs like these? I noticed that this has a large thumbs down amount. So if anyone knows of any other programs in addition, or instead of this, could they please post names or links?"

FWIW I'd suggest (if you don't know already) finding out if there's a particular format his reader/player uses. Audiobook Downloader Pro helps you find & download audiobooks in the public domain at those 2 sites, but you might have to convert for his player, or skip the player & load them on a few mp3 players for him -- I've seen them as cheap as $3-$4, & rather than trying to navigate from one book to the next, maybe load several, each with just one book, swapping out those he's listened to with fresh downloads. Some of the really cheap mp3 players I've seen have really minimal controls that I'd think he could manage.

TO actually make audiobooks OTOH, if that's what you were asking about, you might check around the sites & forums of people who create the audiobooks for sites like librivox.org. I'm hearing impaired so I'm not up on the best or latest tech for electronically reading text, but I know it's fairly widespread with a lot of resources you could explore -- even Adobe's PDF reader has it. Using that you could fairly easily make audio recordings or books from a huge number of sources, from newpapers & magazines to perhaps even Amazon's books for their Kindle, & they often have several free.

I don't know why this is getting 60% thumbs down. It's a nice simple helper program. I would not pay $30.00 for it, but it does what it says it does.

Things to make it nicer might be:
* Play samples
* download ebook, not just audio books
* show some words about the books

Maybe add some social media to the connection, such as ratings and comments.

Cute little program, however it misses a lot as well. When I type in "sigler" nothing comes up, even though he's one of the most popular podiobook creators. Although podiobooks are posted by chapters and not full novels. I think I would prefer to stick with Google searching to find stuff.

And it's possible to record your own audiobook without having to do it through Librivox. I've recorded Beowulf (although admittedly it wasn't a great reading) a few years ago and posted the files for it on the Internet Archive.
