This application is good within its own scope. I hate Audacity simply because of it's very poor design of GUI. There are some issues with Audacity, but I don't want to become one of those people who come here simply to discuss the Freeware tools.

A few days ago, I posted a comment on Audio Converter application's Give away page. Please do not misunderstand me ... there are certainly a few Shareware (or Paid) programs that are not worth of its cost and Programmers may need to pay more attention to the enhancements, to offer a better value for money product. The issue that I want to raise is related to the "discussions on freeware tools on these pages" and this shouldn't be taken as "I'm so fond of currently posted Give Away application.

I seriously believe that people MUST understand the fact that this is not the Forum to discuss Freeware tools; this comment area is for us to share our own personal experiences with the currently posted Give Away application. With due respect to all the comments posted here, I'm really sorry to say that there are very few comments which are constructive. Please guys ... come forward and talk more about the application listed here. At times, I see the discussions on Freeware go so hot and hyped here that it forces me to think and believe that someone is trying to use this noble forum for his own personal cause of "Advertising his Freeware". If this is true then this is a very serious issue and one should really think about it in rather ethical way.

As I posted in my previous comment ... Freeware Companies rarely provide any support for the product ... oops, sorry, I cannot call a Freeware as "Product" ... for the application. If you've provided something to download and furthermore advertise your tool on the basis of the number of downloads then please understand that you MUST take the responsibility of it. Again, this is a moral responsibility and not the legal one. So, it's all up to you who call themselves a Freeware Owners. I know there are so many Paid application owner companies who do not carry out their responsibility; but then this is the legal matter and you always have BBB or Rip Off Report or similar forums to strive for your rights as Customer; this is not possible in Freeware tools. If you're giving something for Free then it's your own choice and your way of living your own life.

If you're a developer like me then please understand that GNU-GPL, CC or any similar licensing schemes are not to hide behind but to serve the world with "pay only for what you want" philosophy. The word "Beta" or version number starting with 0 (like 0.3.5 or 0.9.4) is not the escape for you from taking responsibility of errors or bugs in your application. This is where I hate Freeware tools at most!

Again, this discussion does not mean that I'm in love of today's posted Give Away; I'm just taking this opportunity to raise this very critical issue of too much of "Freeware Discussions on Giveaway Forum", thanks to my fellow Internet Surfing enthusiasts for posting such comments! Personally I believe that if we want to see some really good applications posted here, then let's make the Owner companies realize that we are the sensible people of this world. There is absolutely no harm in criticizing a product which deserves a constructive criticism; let the Developers know where they are going wrong and show them your desired path, if possible, too ... this will lead to a better product which is good for all of us! But please do not use this forum to advertise your Freeware tools; it may harm the cause of this forum.

Thanks so much and Have a Nice Time!

Best Regards!

#39, #46 & many others - Thank you for your intelligent & thoughtful comments. The GAOD forum is a tremendous educational resource, at least for me. My system is simple XP Pro/Sp3, hopefully clean & current. In well over a year now I have tried many apps offered here & have never had a problem with registration.
When all else fails, folks, resd the directions. And please, no whining.
It is so tiresome, not to mention boring. Thank you.

I have been using sound editor pro (paid version) for years. I have not found anything else as good as cheap.... Free is great too. However I know I will be moving from Vista to Win7 when it is available. I will not be downloading as many GAOTD programs as I will not be able to reinstall them for free when I crash and have to reformat or change OS.

There have been some really GREAT software given away in here. A lot of not so great, and some real boners. This forum is an EXCELLENT place to find free altrenatives that so many of you share with us. Format Factory is an example, it converts video files better than ALL and I mean ALL of my paid software does and never crashes. Best free alternative ever mentioned in here. I like it better than SUPER.

The comment by #6 INSANE is ..... well insane...I am sure he is called that for a reason....

"I am sick of the free alternatives. Why would anyone come here of they were looking for freeware?

Hi,

I beg to differ with you. You say it's become a mediocre site with nothing to offer most people in six or seven months, and that you visit only out of curiosity.

Please only speak for yourself as I prefer to make my own judgments. I have downloaded some very useful software in the last "6 or 7 months" some of it offered by GAOTD, other applications through recommendations from the people who post here.

The site is what it is, it promotes software that perhaps people would not have noticed otherwise. The developers get essential feedback, thus they are able to further develop their applications, it's quid pro quo and we get free software. Ok, some of it is complete rubbish, some of it is very good indeed, it's part of the fun, a bit like opening a Christmas cracker.

What exactly would you like to see offered here? Microsoft Office, Coral Paint shop pro, maybe CIV 4?

It sounds to me as if you ought to be visiting a bittorent site, then you can download your fantastic software and "cracks" without parting with a penny, whatever, but please don't knock this site.

All the best,
Andy

I always save the freeware links posted in the comments for a Giveaway even though I usually download and install the Giveaway itself and at least try it out (unless there are comments indicating some major valid reason to pass on it).

A few reasons:
I have been putting a list of links to good freeware, on one of my own websites.
My laptop has a small hard drive compared to my desktop, thus I sometimes find it more useful to pass on the Giveaway due to space considerations on the laptop, and opt for a freeware alternative that has a portable version that can be installed on USB stick.
If my main hard drive crashes, at least I would be able to install freeware alternatives to some of my most useful Giveaways until such time as those Giveaways might be offered again.
I've found out about quite a few freeware programs that I was previously unaware of, from the links posted in the comments (and also have learned of some good free games thanks to Whiterabbit's dedicated posting brief notices of games being offered in the forums (since I don't hit forums very regularly).
I have often referred friends to links for freeware that I've learned about here in GAOTD comment (as well as telling them about the daily Giveaways)

A suggestion to developers: Check and see what freeware/open source applications are competing with your software, what their features are etc, so you can come up with some feature/features/attributes for your program that makes it worth choosing (and paying for) over freeware alternatives.

If it helps at all, the developer(s?) of Audio Editor have used VB (Visual Basic) in past GOTD offers -- that **may** be the source of problems installing that some are experiencing... If Audio Editor won't run because of the error, a fix *might* be to (re)run the VB runtime setup available for download from Microsoft [you should also be able to register any needed files manually, which isn't hard, but you'd have to determine which files, where, using something like InstallWatch]. I would expect that on larger files (i.e. DVD audio tracks etc) Audio Editor might perform a bit slower than non-VB alternatives.

FWIW there are plenty of alternatives besides Audacity, depending on just what you're after -- for example VST plugin support is very popular among more advanced users, but not terribly common with share-ware or free-ware editors. For relative simplicity some may like Wavosaur -- see videohelp.com for that & more alternatives.

#20: For Audible format support, Google, looking particularly for older Goldwave versions.

Not that good. It's not horrible, but it doesn't give you control over Effects or Equalization.
Also, the description here is misleading. I don't have half of these effects on the GOATD version (e.g. mechanize, echo, doppler, etc.)
And the ones that came with it, are preset. Meaning: I can't change how much flanger I added to a sample, for example. Sure I can click Flanger again, but that makes it sound tinny, cause it's doubled.

1. No looping playback
2. No way of slowing down tempo without ending up with Cookie Monster or Chipmunk sounds (aka changing pitch).
3. Where's the equalization panel? Filters don't count.

Once you feel like you've outdone Audacity, get your program out there and sell it. Otherwise, you're far behind in the competition.
Yea, many are gonna say: "It's free. Don't bite the hand that feeds." But it needs more improvement and expansions, as mentioned.

To #6 'insane'

Read and learn;

Freeware is computer software that is available for use at no cost or for an optional fee.

Criteria

The only criterion for being classified as freeware is that the software must be fully functional for an unlimited time with no cost, monetary or otherwise. The software license may impose restrictions on the type of use including personal use, individual use, non-profit use, non-commercial use, academic use, commercial use or any combination of these. For instance, the license may be "free for personal, non-commercial use".

Sounds a lot like what you receive here. Don't you think?

BTW: Most people enjoy the suggestions for free alternatives. Not everybody knows about ALL products on the market.

So, to me these suggestions are very welcomed.

You don't like it, just don't take it.

Keep on smiling. ;-)

QUOTE::::

There are several resources that can help you with using Audio Editor. This manual is just one of them.

Website
Our website (http://www.mediavigor.com/) contains a wealth of information about the Audio Editor product. It is a good place to start when looking for information about Audio Editor or PDF format.

Documentation
The Audio Editor manual can be obtained in several formats (chm, pdf, online).

END OF QUOTE::

I cannot find the manual ANYWHERE. The help file with the programme shows the above, the EULA and email addresses only. Maybe I should email them and say 'How do I use this programme?'
Im finding it hard to do anything with it. Anyone else know how to use it properly? It's not as easy as it may appear!!

One of the criteria I use to determine whether or not to actually download and install something from GAOTD is the general consensus of the people commenting on it, and the pros and cons listed in the comments. Of course I pay particular attention to the regular reviewers such as ashraf.

I'm amused sometimes at the people who expect these complimentary softwares to be equivalent to packages costing hundreds of dollars. Let's be a little more realistic about our expectations, shall we?

GAOTD is a channel for software developers to get working copies of their products into the hands of end-users and, to get end-user feedback on them - a very important part of product development.

I personally use Audacity myself, but then I'm an experienced audio technician, so I'm not intimidated by the complexity of Audacity's interface - which is a little too complex for the "newbie." I applaud the efforts of developers who attempt to make difficult processes simple for less-experienced users.

While I'm passing on this particular offer, I continue to keep an eye out for the daily notice from GAOTD - there are definitely some great items available here from time to time, and I've found some excellent software here in the past.

And if you don't like something that's being offered here - simply uninstall it! If you're prone to constantly gripe about the quality of the offerings here, why not simply stop coming here? That's how the marketplace works! Simply vote with your feet (or mouse, in this case)!

Just because you personally don't have a use for a particular offering doesn't mean it's a waste of time. If it isn't relevant to you just ignore it and it will go away at midnight - no harm, no foul!

And always remember - even "free" has a price...

@#6 : your argument doesn't hold.
The FREE in FREEWARE doesn't really have anything to do with money. Why ? Because you must also take into account the work that programmers put into developing their "free" programs, the work that site owners put into hosting and describing those programs, not to mention the vast number of beta testers that happily help out to improve the programs.

Downloaded, trialled it, like it. Thanks GAOTD.
Easy to use GUI, does what it says ion the description, no install problems. A good little program. I dont think I would buy this at that price, but if it were half the price then I would after a trial period

There are probably better and there are probably worse, but having been offered a pay-for program by GAOTD for free, in return for a bit of feedback, positive or negative, I dont feel the need to post others without some form of pinted reason:
.
I do agree posting other freebies and non freebies is good as if theyre well versed comments, such as
" XXXX program does this but the way it does it works better for the user to understand"
or
" I found CCCCCC Program provides more clarity as it utilises XYZ as wellas what the GAOTD program uses"
as that way the GAOTD developer might pick up ideas to better his own program that he wasnt aware of. Negative feedback in a positive way, rather than maybe " This is pump, FGFGF is better" -Why? How? In what manner?

@#6 "Why would anyone come here of they were looking for freeware?"

I don't know about "anyone" but I come here looking for good software, at a reasonable price, (free is even better). Sometimes GAOTD will offer a clunker, but someone will point out a really good piece of freeware, or software for purchase that really fits my needs.

In this case, I already use Audacity, which is outstanding for what it's meant to do. I don't have a need for this program, but I still go through the comments, to see if maybe there's something out there that's better, newer, faster, or whatever.

Obviously #6 isn't coming back to read through this, but for any of you that might post something similar, there's more to GAOTD than just the free program of the day. The forum has, overall, been considerably more valuable to me than the actual programs.

A tip of the hat here to Whiterabbit, who consistently provides great information on the games offered at game.giveawayoftheweekend.com :)

Vista Home Premium 32 bit:

Pros: Downloaded fine, works ok.

Cons: Received an error at the end of install about a problem with the register server. Happened two times, so not sure it registered correctly. I won't keep it anyway because....on this page and their homepage they say there are more special effects than there actually are in the program. I don't see doppler, mechanize, echo or reverse (which I particularly was interested in).

Uninstalled.

@11, that is true, that is why I come back often aswell.

Unfortunately, a gem comes along about once every month.. and there is usually a free alternative to that aswell :/

------------------------------------------------------

Installation: Installation went smoothly on XP SP2.

First Glance: Very basic.

In depth review: Very basic :P The program is no match to the likes of Audacity or Wavepad, I mean sometimes I find Audacity is a bit 'Heavy' so this might be useful to the more 'casual' user, perhaps if you are just trimming a bit of a song then this is the program for you.

Conclusion: If you are going to use this even on a bi-daily usage, you should stick to the free alternatives:

Audacity: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
WavePad : http://www.nch.com.au/wavepad/index.html

It did that 3 times then it said program installed and activated. Program came up and ran fine. Left an extra icon on my desktop to purchase a pro version. I have Audacity and these are comparable for basics, Audacity offers an easier user interface and more options, IMHO.

#6 & #9 - Why would anyone come here IF they were looking for freeware?
Well, probably for one reason is that for the 'one day only' offer; it is 'Freeware'. Haven't you noticed that? Plus, they have the chance to read some comments of downloading or downloading problems, installation or problems, and ease of use of the application. You don't have to come here for alternatives, even though they're offered, you can always use 'Google' to find something to your liking or in many cases without some sort of guidance, your dislike.
I haven't tried this one because I already have one from GAOTD which works fine and is a smaller file to work with.

Works fine running Vista Ultimate 64.

Just had a to get pass the stupid Windows Defender program. I just keep hitting the X to close the the Defender program until the setup installs. And puff runs like a champ.

Audacity has more functions and is free
I wish I could find a audio recorder that would record from anywhere.
Like from Firefox or from the desktop.
Maybe they could do this for their software.

Any way I give it a thump ups just for running on Vista Ultimate 64

Let me say to Insane, the sixth comment, that I come here and read the comments for the free alternatives. I have had lots of trouble with the licenses of the software that's supposedly offered for free. I've downloaded a few and I'm surprised when I go to use them after they've been installed and the license states it was successful and then they still want a license number. Then I have to go find the original email and re-input it again and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. The one thing I can say about all the freeware that's been suggested by other users is they always work. I would rather have freeware that works than software with a license that doesn't.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who comment and give alternatives to the software being offered with a free license. Yes there have been a couple of times I wanted and downloaded the offering of the day but it seems I always wind up with the alternative freeware and typically I'm glad I did. So I thank all of you with Alternative freeware solutions. Thanks GAOTD for the comments section...

Re: why do people come here if they want freeware...

Sometimes I can get by with freeware but if a paid program is better and happens to be offered for free, I'm going to try it out.

Sometimes I get here too late to download a program so I check the comments for a free alternative.

Sometimes I don't want to use a GOTD program because I want to be able to use it for commercial use.

Sometimes I don't want to rely on a program if no support is provided or I might lose it if my computer crashes again.

Its always nice to have a backup or other alternatives. Just because you personally don't care to be informed of free alternatives does not mean others don't want to hear it.

When are people going to realize that GOTD programs are not a "one size fits all" deal? Thousands of people with different needs come here and GOTD is never going to be able to please everyone.

From just 30 minutes of use/fiddling, this is good little editor. One can never have too many audio editors as NONE that I've found do EVERYTHING. If this one would directly handle "Audible AA" audio book files, this program would be even better & I could hear audio books directly on my MP3 player.

I agree with #11 (Mike), which was answering a question from #6 (insane), which means (my comment has nothing to do with the product either. . (cuz i use Audacity). But thanx GAOTD as always.

@6 - “Why would anyone come here of they were looking for freeware?” Because of the suggestions from the group. For instance I keep looking for an editor that will capture streaming audio. Freecorder is great but it doesn't have a timer.

Any suggestions?

Insane...you're right someone is going to suggest Audacity, because it is an amazing piece of software..regardless if it is free or not...unless you want to spend a few hundred for a pro audio editor, there is no better than Audacity.

Actually I look for the "free alternatives" every day. I am trying to make a database of them if I could just get to it.

It's also a matter of helping visitors to this site know what's available. If Audacity is free, has better features, and is easier to use, why would someone get another product, even if it is being given away for free for today? Why would one believe the author's claim about it being worth $20 if there are other products that are better that are free all the time? Or, if the closest freeware or open source product has a lot fewer features or is harder to use, then a giveaway might be very reasonable -- but how would I know unless I can compare.

Another issue is reliability. If I start depending on a product, I will want to be able to reinstall it if my hard drive goes bad or I get a new computer. If the Giveaway is good, I might shell out the money for the supported version that I can reinstall whenever I want; but if it's about the same as a freeware alternative, it might have been better to go with the free product to begin with.

Believe it or not there are a lot of people who have never heard of Audacity, which is a cool product. So people can get the Giveaway and Audacity, compare them, and decide for themselves which they prefer.

And finally, a bit of competition never hurts anyone. If the people who create Audio Editor discover that Audacity is taking potential customers away, they might concentrate on ways to make their product better (e.g. easier to use for novices, or features that aren't available elsewhere). Their product gets better and finds its niche.
